It wasn’t the kind of sunshine-smiley laugh that most children do when I first say my jokes to children. This one was sharp and almost sounded like crying, but in a shocked way, as if he didn’t know how to cry.
I, being my happy-go-lucky confetti rainbow self, did not take that into account, of course, so I was utterly terrified and wholly confused. I stood there, not doing a thing.
Isaac stopped laughing after a while and instead yelled at me to go and hide the body, as if it were my fault, as if I had wanted to kill the cat. As you know, I did not yet have any sort of murderous intentions nor hatred, but I didn’t feel like talking about that to him. I just picked up the cat and ran to go hide it. I didn’t think much about how to hide it. I just wanted to get rid of it.
I was scared and so was he, but I didn’t see that from him. Isaac didn’t joke about it. But he was still mean to me.

We played some more games after that, but it wasn’t the same. The cat’s death was still on our minds and when Isaac was called downstairs by his Mom, boy did she yell at him. I heard the whole thing from upstairs.
She called him all kinds of things which I shall not repeat to you, but one thing I found quite humorous was that she called him “demonic”. Demonic? Ha! That woman had never seen anything demonic before. But you must have already known that humans called many things demonic back then. They still do now, but slightly less than before. Only slightly. Some aspects of humans don’t change.
But back to my story: The ol’ woman was calling Isaac demonic and not giving him much chance to speak and when Isaac did talk, he told her that it was my fault! I couldn’t believe that he sold me out like that and confetti tears came out of my eyes-don’t you laugh now-but it wasn’t like she was going to believe him! I think that upon hearing my name she declared that Isaac was possessed and that he should go “put himself to use” at a factory.
What? You thought that I was going to say something about mission schools? Isaac’s parents were poor, they couldn’t afford such things! You know, children back then were much more grateful for what they had than the youth today. A lot more polite than the likes of you, anyhow.
Well…almost all of them. Upon hearing this, Isaac screamed and cried and threw quite the fit. I heard him storming up the stairs and when he finally got to his room, he slammed the door and cried on his bed.
Though I felt a little wounded from before, I wanted to help him. He was my friend, after all. I told him that he could come with me to my magical box. He shook his head at that idea. I then asked if I could come with him.
Human, that could have possibly been the worst decision I’ve ever made in my two hundred and twenty-five years of living.
Isaac threw himself from the bed and ran towards my box, immediately opening it and facing it towards me.
I, being bound to the box, could do nothing to run away. It pulled me in until I was trapped inside and Isaac had thrown the box in a corner of his room. He cried when he did it.
It was a cruel thing for him to do, but it was a cruel world and I still wanted to help him, somehow.
But thirteen years went by and I grew rather colorless and bitter, but still clung onto one wilting sliver of hope that Isaac would come back.
He did come back alright, after his father beat his mother to death in a public street, no less, and then was hung from the gallows. How do I know this? I heard a few things. I can learn a lot from observing.
Isaac had come back as an adult and was every bit as wretched as his father, destroying everything he touched, except he killed more than one person. I do not remember all of the people he killed but it was enough for me to know how beautiful blood can be!
As you know, Isaac let me out, eventually, as a thoughtless mistake and I had torn him apart just as he had torn apart many people before.
But I’m better at killing than he ever was. I’m not as pathetic, either. I take joy in the blood I spill and I’m not foolish enough to get caught! Everyone knew that he was a bad apple, but it was easier for human monstrosities to commit crimes. Only slightly, though. Humans are still doing awful things in the shadows. You know this well.
And I guess I do miss him. Just a little bit. He was my only friend. I don’t have many friends nowadays.
I don’t intend to make friends with you, either. You were laughing at me. I saw you laughing! Not that I was planning to let you live anyway, I just wanted someone to hear what really happened. You would have gotten the story all wrong if I let you go. They all do.
What? Are you crying now? Don’t cry, you humans like this kind of scary stuff. It’s Halloween! Cackle a little, why don’t ya?
