A Former Lover

In poetry

A life I left behind:

Love and loss,

Tears and mystery.

You snap back into my life,

And snap my emotions in two

Yet I'm so caught up with you.

~

You're cold and foreign,

A hollow shell of your former self.

I still see sparks behind those eyes,

I still hear tenderness in your voice.

A carefully crafted caring in your words,

Though you're so far away from me.

~

It's more than a distance of space,

It's a distance of time and feeling

An absence of emotion.

It has drawn a shade over or heart

Rendering you hapless, hopeless, helpless

Lost in a torrent of confusion.

~

I've come back for my other half.

Two souls never meant to part

Were parted by a girl so foolish,

An action so crass and careless.

A promise so laden with passion,

Torn from your bleeding finger tips.

~

Apology is written all over my face,

Agony is seard into your being.

Words pass between us, like old friends.

It's far from the ordinary and

Just as far from the extraordinary.

It's not much, but it's a start.

Hi,here with a review. First of all, I really liked the title, it grabbed my attention. From my perspective, this was a really good poem. I love how've you described the pain inside this person after meeting her former lover. I love the list of three you have used "hapless, hopeless, helpless"; you have also used alliteration. Overall, I loved your poem and keep writing.

That was a beautiful poem, in my opinion. It has a meaning that stays clear throughout the entire thing. I too have experienced a lost love returned. Confused sparks struck the air around us when we were reunited. It's a bittersweet feeling that can barely be described in words, but I believe you did so in the perfect way. Grammatically, it's not perfect, but I understood what you tried to convey here. So far, this has been my favorite poem on this site that I've read. Overall, it's amazing...10/10.

Aw, thank you.

Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.
