I'm Nine

Hey Wisegirl22, I want to say that I totally understand this. I was constantly told this as well. We probably all were at some time. I enjoyed this, and I understand what you're getting at. It was a good read. Just one small thing though. I'm a huge grammar Nazi, so I had to correct this: "Because you told me too?"
I truly, honestly don't mean to be rude, but the "too" should be "to"... Again, I'm sorry, but it's just a huge habit of me.. Lol
But overall the poem was really good. I liked it...

Growing up
really freaking sucks
I've got too much stuff
I don't make enough
And soon I'm gonna turn to dust

Life is hugely terrible and horrible and disgusting. Slaves, the KKK, terrorism? Those are things even I shouldn't know too much about, being 12.

I know it probably sounds like I'm another one of those people putting you down because "you're too young." Honestly, that's not the case. I'm just warning you right now: Sometimes there are things in life you really want to know about at first, but once you learn you really get sick and don't want to live in a world full of slaves, evil groups of people and terrorists who are willing to kill themselves in an effort to scare and kill others.

Death is scarier than it seems. It's hard to explain why, but here's how I'll put it. Religion is all about belief. Most religions believe that at one point in time (whether it being your death or your last death after reincarnation or some other thing) you will reach some sort of afterlife. Like Heaven or Nirvana. You know. But really, once someone has passed away, they can't go back to you and tell you that you'll go to Heaven or whatever place your religion believes you belong. So can we be sure that afterlives exist? No, and that's daunting.

This world is full of death and scary things. I'm terrified of a horror game that is by no means real at all, and I'm older than you; that just goes to show how filled the world is with dirty minds and freaky ones. If someone is willing to create a game about a purple killer who murdered 4 children in a pizzeria, stuffed them into robot animal suits and let the suits roam free to kill the security guard at night, that just tells you - this world is bad. (Anyone realize I'm referencing Five Night's at Freddy's?)

And I'm not trying to scare you here. I just want you to know - no person in this world enjoyed their childhood enough because they didn't realize how innocent they were at the time. They wanted to be old enough, like you say. Well, this needs to stop. You can be the first child to have enjoyed their early years well enough to mentally and physically be ready later on for the hardships. Bullying, murder, terrorists, slaves, war. Or you can pass on this message to your children and grandchildren one day so that they might believe what you say and not spoil their innocent minds so early with threats of the big world outside of their warm home.

At least you have a safe place to call home. Many children do not. So here's my closing sentence:

You may think you're ready, but do you really know how ready you must be to know the grim details of the world? You are old enough, yes, but are you certainly ready?

Keep up the fantastic writing, however, and remember that I'm not trying to scare you or say you aren't smart enough because you are smarter than any other 9-year-old I know of and you are brave. It takes courage to even write something like this and to reveal your young age to much older people. So if you think you're ready, you are. But if you find yourself hating the world, you can always come to me for help. I won't turn you down.

I'm going to repeat what Mem said: Take your time to grow up.

You're nine. You still have 100% of your current lifetime to go before you're a legal adult. You still have probably 800% of your current lifetime in front of you. Trust me, if you can take your time, stop to smell the roses, enjoy childhood while you have it, no one is going to begrudge you that.

Growing up isn't fun. They teach you about war, slavery, and terrorism so early in school so that you grow up knowing not to repeat that mistake; even at this age, you aren't taught the grisly details.

In some cases, you should wait until you're older to do something because it's simply not legal for you to do it now, or because it's something that you won't fully understand until you're in adolescence or adulthood. You're not a teenager; you're not an adult; there will be some things you don't fully understand, just by virtue of lack of experience in the world. There's one thing you will have to accept, and that's that you don't know everything you'd need to be a successful adult at this age.

When I was 5, I was sitting in my kindergarten class, doing whatever it is kindergarteners do, when the Twin Towers were bombed. That was my lesson in terrorism. Until I was 9, I wasn't allowed to go outside when my parents weren't home, because there were serial killers in our area that preyed on children. That was my lesson in murder. And even though I knew these things, and I knew both of them at the time, I didn't know anything about the actual legal, physical, social, or military repercussions of these acts. I was 5; I was 9. The most I knew was that the serial killers would hurt me, and that the terrorists would hurt people.

Take your time to learn these things. The world is cold, cruel, and hard; it's not worth hurting yourself trying to grow up too fast. The adults around you will shut you down, and in the end, all you get for your effort is being able to say "I was old for my age" in 10 years.

Take your time. We'll still be here when you get here.

Yes! Thank you! I'm 13, so people take me a bit more seriously now, but this is such a huge problem. Don't listen to them, though. You're absolutely old enough.

I think the main reason people tell you that you're too young is because they dont want you to worry about anything. Take the time to grow up. It's not fun being an adult, trust me I had to be one at your age. And even now at 17 I still get told that I'm too young to know things. Growing up isnt fun, nor is being an adult. Take the time to enjoy being a kid because believe me. Your going to wish you had these years back.

This actually sounds just like a rant thingy I just wrote... Kinda creepy xD I like it! Great job!

I feel this so much. <3 You have a lot to prove when you're younger, and people just assume you're innocent and have an inferior intellect.

I just wanted to say that this a bit more clumsily written than your other poems, but that's okay because you acknowledged it. And, story of my life, and I'm older than you! Seriously, as Albus Dumbledore once said, it is a crime for the old to underestimate youth (not quoted...too lazy to get up and get sixth Harry Potter book...) It's like, "omg, I'm sorry, you can't watch or read this" and it's like "would you like to SEE my writing? No, I don't think so, you'd be a bit disturbed since it's pretty much RATED R." Sorry, had to rant right along with you.
And why were you allowed to join Young Writers Society if you were eight? I thought it was only 13 years or older? Sorry have to ask that because i've been wondering ever since I've seen an earlier post by you.

Yes, I know the feeling. Sometimes, it's terrible and I completely understand. Other times, though, you have to know that people are just protecting you and trying to keep you safe, or other times it's secrets that parents share that they don't want you to hear (I hate that. >.<)

Just wanted to state my opinion.

Some of you lines are a little long, and there are some parts that could be broken up a little better. For example,

Too young to know about some problem when I know about slaves

and the Ku Klux Klan

and terrorism?
