Without a look back, Sam grabbed her hand and pulled her forward. He was running at a very fast pace, one that she couldn’t keep up with. But the adrenaline rushing through her kept her legs moving. They were barreling down the alleyway and came out into the clearing. Akia hadn’t noticed how dark it had gotten until that moment. The fog clogged the air and all she could see of Sam was his silhouette. They didn’t stop until they were a block down.

“What took you so long?” she asked. Her question wasn’t meant to be accusing, but as she tried to catch her breath and pull herself together, she feared that it might have slipped out that way.

“I thought you were right behind me,” he responded between breaths. “Besides, I had to get Seth back and give Phillip the locket.”

“You gave it to him? Thank God.” Relief washed over her. The locket was finally safe.

Sam hesitated. “I might not have actually been able to give it to him.”

Akia's heart skipped a beat. "What does that mean?" She watched in horror as he reached into his pocket and pulled out the piece of jewelry. "Sam! Are you stupid? You can't bring that thing back here! Why didn't you give it to Phillip? You're such an idiot!" She was raving, yelling at him like she never had before. She could see the shame gathering on his face, but she didn't care. The only reason she sent him on without her was so he could get rid of the locket. She never imagined that he would bring it back with him.

"Can we just transport and get out of here?" she asked, sighing. The moment the question was out of her mouth though, she knew the answer. She didn't have enough energy to transport. Her mind could barely focus on finding somewhere to hide. Dorrin and Rhys would be after them soon enough.

She led Sam along the road, sneaking paranoid glances over her shoulder. Finally they found a house that looked stable enough to hold them. There was even a single light shining out from the middle of the house. What luck they had! With one final look back at the road, Akia stepped across the threshold into the house. A pair of hands immediately grabbed her and pulled her back. She slammed into a strong chest and flailed, trying to break free. Only when she felt a sharp metal against her throat did she stop.

"Stop struggling," Rhys growled in her ear, pressing the dagger into her skin. "It's easy enough for me to slide this blade right across your throat. One quick motion and that'll be it."

Akia swallowed hard. "You can't kill me. You need me to open that stupid locket."

"What if I told you there was another way."

"There is no other way."

"There's always a way." He snarled.

"Akia, did you..." Sam trailed off when he entered the house. He looked at Akia tight in Rhys's grasp and was immediately on alert. His eyes raked the room, no doubt looking for Dorrin.

"Let's have a chat, Samuel," came Dorrin's voice from behind Akia. She tried to twist her head to look, but it only made her neck scrape the metal. "You have something of ours. And we have your girl. I think you understand the situation."

"She's not my girl," Sam retorted, hands clenched by his side. "We're partners, friends. And there's no way in hell that I'm leaving without her.”

"There's also no way in hell that you're leaving with that locket," Dorrin retorted. He finally stepped closer so that Akia could see him. His back was turned to her as he continued to address Sam, as if she wasn't even there. "So here's what we're going to do. You're going to give us that locket and we'll give you Akia."

She shook with anger. "I'm right here you know. Stop talking about me like I'm some prize."

Dorrin ignore her. In one swift motion, he held out his hand, palm up. "The locket." Sam looked just as nervous as Akia felt. His eyes were wide and his fingers were fumbling with the locket in his pocket. His confidence and strength that Akia had noticed the moment she had woken up that morning was gone.

She tried to will her thoughts to him, to communicate without touching him. But it didn't work like that. She'd have to be next to him, clutching his hand. One day she would find a ways to connect her mind to his without making it obvious. If they could share images while transporting, they could share thoughts any time.

Sam's face seemed to follow his thought pattern. There was determination that faded to helplessness, but then his face scrunched up and he glared. He held that gaze for a while before relaxing and sneaking a glance at her. The sadness in his eyes was more than she could bear. And she couldn't even tell what it was he was sad about.

Slowly, he pulled out the locket and held it in front of him. Rhys took in a sharp breath behind her and gripped her wrists tighter, as if he really thought she would risk getting her throat slit to defend the locket. Sam knew how to take care of himself. He had to have some sort of trick up his sleeve. He knew better than to just give in.

"Take it," he mumbled. "Let her go." Akia couldn't believe it. He was actually falling into their trap. There was no way that Rhys would kill her, not until she told him how to get the magic out. Sam knew that. Yet here he was, giving them exactly what they wanted.

Dorrin reached out and took the locket. He held it in his palm, as if studying it. No one moved. Sam was lost in self misery and Akia was lost in disbelief. Suddenly, Dorrin closed his fingers around the locket, creating a fist, and punched Sam in the jaw. The force of the hit sent him falling to the ground. Akia cringed when his head hit with a sickening thud. He cried out, then reached up to cradle his head.

“Let’s get this over with. No more funny business,” Dorrin said, turning to face Akia. But his eyes were trained on Rhys. “Get her powers and let’s get out of here.”

Akia’s eyes widened. “My what? No, I’m not letting you do that!”

“You have no choice in the matter, kid,” Dorrin bellowed, only a few inches from her face. “I’m done playing the nice guy.”

She scoffed. “I didn’t know that torturing people was being nice. Besides, you can’t take my powers. You need me to open that locket.” Despite the confidence in her voice, she was feeling anything but. Sam was on the ground, clutching his head and not moving. He was still conscious as she could see his body rise and fall with his breaths. Rhys still had her pinned back, the dagger at her throat.

Dorrin shook his head. “This has nothing to do with you anymore. I tried to convince you to join us, but you seem too proud to cooperate.”

Akia wanted to argue, but it wouldn’t really help anything. She looked passed him at Sam, still lying on the ground. His hands were still holding his head, but his breathing had slowed. He seemed more calm than before.

Dorrin’s face relaxed and he took a step backward. “Rhys hasn’t stopped experimenting. He found a way to get the powers out of that locket. It doesn’t matter anymore that you know how.”

“Unless she already drained the powers for herself,” Rhys mumbled. Akia couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Did he really think that she would do that? The Akia he thought he knew might have, but the grown Akia knew better. Those powers didn’t belong to her. And they didn’t belong to Rhys either.

Dorrin shook his head. “They’re all still here… I can feel them.” His eyes lit up as he stared at the shimmering piece of jewelry. The greediness was very apparent.

“Can I go now?” Akia asked, feigning boredom. “Or are you just going to lecture me on things that I already know?”

Rhys pulled the dagger from her skin and backed away. She relaxed for a moment, but was immediately on edge when he appeared in front of her. Dorrin gave him the locket, which he promptly clipped around his neck.

Akia raised an eyebrow. “You actually have to wear the locket? That seems like a pointless step.”

Rhys glared at her, but didn’t say anything. He wrapped his hand around the locket and looked at her. “You have to stand still for this. Don’t. Move.”

Sweat started collecting on her forehead. Both Dorrin and Rhys stood between her and freedom. If she could just find a way.

“So,” she started. “If I were to move this way,” she took a step to the left. “It wouldn’t work?” Rhys growled in frustration. She almost laughed at his ridiculousness. “Or if I take another step this way, it wouldn’t work either?” But before she could take her third step, a gust of wind hit her from the left, sending her stumbling the other direction. Just as she did, another gust hit her from the right, pushing her back to the left. Soon the wind was coming continuously from every direction, rendering her motionless. She tried to fight against it, but it was too strong.

She looked up to see Dorrin looking at her, his gaze intense. This was his doing. Every time she thought she had him figured out, he did something new that surprised her.

The wind was howling in her ears as she struggled to stay upright. Each time she began to fall to one side, the wind pushed her in another direction. It was a constant battle that she couldn’t win. She saw Rhys’s mouth moving, but she couldn’t make out what he was saying.

Suddenly, something started to build up inside of her. A cool sensation spread throughout her body, starting from her core and moving out to the tips of her fingers. It was the same sensation as she had felt many times before. The only difference was that she didn’t feel herself healing afterwards. Whenever magic left her body, there was always more to replace it, filling up her core. But as each cool wave flowed through her and out her fingertips, she felt more empty.

Rhys was draining her powers.

She closed her eyes, wishing it all to be a dream, hoping to find something that she could use to fight back. She wanted to thrash out, to throw all of her magic at the damaging winds. But she couldn’t. She reached for something, anything, but found nothing. It was gone, all of it. She was powerless.

The winds slowed and ultimately came to a stop. Without anything to hold her up, she collapsed. Her ears were ringing and she swore she could still hear the wind roaring, even though she knew it was gone. Her head was pounding and her vision was blurry. She focused on Sam’s body across the room. He was a lot closer than she thought and he was up and moving. He looked just as groggy as she did. For a moment she feared that they had taken his powers too. But then she remembered the punch and Sam’s head slamming into the floorboards.

There was a blinding yellow light that filled the room, and then it was gone. Akia searched for the two men, but they were nowhere to be seen. They had transported. They were gone.

Akia hurt. Her body ached for something that she’d never have again. It was cold, almost freezing. She pulled her arms close to her body, shivering to keep herself warm. She looked over at Sam, who was up on his knees, looking around the room.

Standing, she made her way over to him. Each step she took was heavy, yet she felt like her body was weightless. When she reached him, she collapsed beside him. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she whispered, “Take me home. I need to go home.”

He looked at her, his eyes dazed. “Home? What are you… aren’t we already there?” His eyes searched her face and must’ve seen her pale skin and empty eyes. “What happened? I heard voices, but my head was just… the pain, Akia.” He grabbed his head and lowered himself back to the floor, taking her with him. She didn’t care that the floor was cold against her skin. She didn’t care that the fog was creeping into the house, as there was no door to keep it out. She didn’t care how awkward it was to rest her head on her best friend’s chest.

All she wanted was her powers back. She wanted to stop feeling so empty, to cast a spell.

“I just want to go home,” she repeated. “Home. I want home. Take me back, Sam. Take me back.” She kept repeating the same words again and again as the world faded away around her.

Noelle.

When I review a chapter, I stop and make notes to remember for reviewing - perhaps not big things, but critiques I noticed. This is the first time with you I didn't notice anything while reading, nothing caught me, and I was too entranced by this chapter to do anything but read. I'm still stunned by this, especially the parts surrounding Akia's powers being taken from her. From then on, the piece was so, so perfect and just, well, captivated me. The ending was a real tear-jerker, and her words and actions brought out the emotion like nothing else can. You did a wonderful job in this, and like the other reviewers, I have a new favorite chapter.

The length was perfect. <3

All I can do is read through a few more times and see what miniscule nitpicks I can find~

They were barreling down the alleyway

Your chapter is full of passive voice - so many places like were barreling. In most cases, you can change this to the active voice and it smooths out the edges, making it flow better. In this case, it'd be barreled. And then everyone would be happy. :p

I agree with Livvy. >> He hasn't actually done anything wrong, really. In Akia's eyes, perhaps he has, but Sam always has his reasons. And I think it'd be nice for us to know what they are, because we never are told of what they were. Even if they were completely ridiculous - which doesn't sound like Sam as he's occasionally incorrect, but never stupid - it'd still help make more sense to the reader. Fill in the gaps, I guess?

There was even a single light shining out from the middle of the house.

Isn't this like an abandoned world? - devoid of life save for them? Whyy then is Akia drawn to the house with the light shining? I think she'd be running from the house as fast as she could, knowing Rhys could be in there waiting. Instead, she headed towards it instead of away. >> Oh, and the sentence What luck they had! read as a silly and unnecessary sentence to me. Almost like a sentence you'd read out of a Dick and Jane book for first graders. xd

but it only made her neck scrape the metal.

... Wait a moment, please. She has a dagger pressed against her neck, supposedly sharp, she moves her neck around - and it only scrapes against her neck? If the point is pressed against her neck as I read, then it'd slice her up.

The part where her powers are taken from her? I've been sitting there on it for a while now, wondering what I could say, should say.... And while I love that part, it lacks something. I'd say it lacks pain? All of her powers are taken from her, leaving her a hollow shell, and all she feels is this cool sensation sweeping across her body... and then the emptiness. Me no like. In order for the reader to feel her pain, know she's going through something awful, we need to be able to feel it with her. I did feel the cooling sensation, but that was so unexpected and, if you parden my rudeness, bland that I stumbled along while reading. I think a feeling of anguish would work far better here. c:
... And she feels far too calm for what's going on. Rhys is taking her everything - and she's just so easy-going about it! I think I'd be screaming. xd

He looked just as groggy as she did.

Groggy doesn't sound like the right word to me. More like someone who just woke up from sleep than what happened to both of them.

That ending. <3 It's the best wrap-up you've ever done with a chapter. Akia wanting to go home and repeating those words over and over and over. It pulls at the readers' hearts, or at least it did for me, and it's a special moment. Sometimes I wonder if Sam and Akia have something going, but it's at these moments when I see that they really don't - or perhaps just don't know it. They're close and they're perfect. My parents can't seem to understand that it's possible to be best friends with someone of the opposite sex, but you know what. This is the perfect example. I love their relationship! And today is the day I stop shipping them, because they're perfect as they are. Now, that I said that, the following chapters are probably going to have romance - just because I mentioned it. xd But with how they feel and act right now, it makes complete sense that they'd be as wonderful friends as they are.

This chapter was gorgeous and sad, Noelle. Just gorgeous.

Hi Noelle!

Happy review day!

Me again! This might be a short review from me because I really don't have too much to say about this chapter. I thought it was done fantastically well, and I am very glad you didn't break it anywhere awkward because it was perfect the way you had it in here. I think it is so sad to see that Akia has lost her powers. I thought that you wouldn't actually let i happen so when it did I was sad and sorry for her. And I think you described how she felt the missing element in her body so well. Somehow, I wish that she is able to get her powers back by the end of this novel :/ And then we have Sam who seems to have been seriously hurt in his head and is lost about what is going on now seeing as that punch to the head was bad. I am starting t get the impression that there is no solution to this problem. And I get the feeling that is right where you want us readers to be, so you are doing perfectly in that retrospect.

There was a little bit of humor in this one with Akia moving to try and avoid getting her powers drained. I approve of that ^^ I just felt like at times she seemed suspiciously calm for someone who was in such a dangerous position. Yes, you did say that she was sounding more confidently than she felt but she seemed to be calm, like she had the situation under control and knew exactly how everything would play out. I don't think this is the impression we should be getting. So it might be a good idea to take any exceptionally long or some of the longer sentences than usual that she says and make them a bit more shorter and sharp, to the point.

I also found it a bit weird that Akia was yelling at him about having kept the locket and he didn't say a single thing in his defense. Yes, do give him time to look sheepish because he has messed up royally, but if he had come any later she could've been in a much worse position and one that he might've been unable to save her from. So maybe he should try to interrupt her with his own rationalising at some point, or he should look like he was resigned to be yelled at instead, coming to the conclusion that he wouldn't be able to change her mind or attitude.

"What if I told you there was another way."

This was posed as a type of question even though it isn't a straightforward one. It does mean that it still needs the question mark at the end though.

She looked passed him at Sam

You seem to get confused with past and passed. Passed should only be used as a verb, as in to pass someone and she has to be moving or someone should be moving for it to be used. But past is for when you are looking past something, or referring to history. Make sure you don't get the two confused! It was something I noted from previous chapters as well and didn't see it as an issue until now.

I am going to keep reading! I have no clue what will happen next so if I can say anything, I can confirm that this story is not at all predictable :)

Hello Noelle!

OH GOSH NO. I feel so bad for Akia right now, you have no idea. The whole thing was very emotional, and you did a great job of capturing that emotion. I actually think this is my new favourite chapter! And at the same time, I want to go somewhere and have a good cry.

The only reason she sent him on without her...

I don't remember it really being that she sent him. I thought it was more of a there's no choice, just go kind of thing. Something to think about anyway- because here it comes across that something happened when it didn't, even though it's a small thing. :-P

"Let's have a chat, Samuel,"

This little bit of dialogue made me happy. For some reason it just seems so appropriate for Dorrian to refer to Sam by his whole name ( I know, it's odd thing to like... ). And it just really seemed like something Dorrian would say!

"She's not my girl," Sam retorted, hands clenched by his side.

That was quite defensive, there, Sam. Almost makes it seem like he does have a thing for her. ;) But that's not exactly why I brought it up. Well it kind of is, I guess; I was just thinking that that's kind of a bad time for him to want to defend Akia and his friendship as not being romantic. Like, if my best friend had a knife held to his throat, I don't think I'd take the time to correct the details. Maybe Sam is just like that though, I don't know! :-P

Also, when same was about to hand the locket over I was like: SAM NOOOOO!!!! TELL 'EM YOU GAVE IT TO PHILLIP!!!!! XD Like I said, it was a very emotional part. o.o

Awesome work, Noelle!!!

Hello, Noelle! Let us take a moment of silence to realize how much I have reviewed these past week. I think I'm sweating through my eyes right now! Oh and is that a frog in my throat? Wolfare1 warns me that she is sorry for what happens at the end and I'm legit scared. I might actually cry through this part so just...bear with me. There really heart felt music in the background(darn you Pandora). Anyways, let's get reviewing...

I like the input that you took from Wolfare1 because now that Akia has lost her powers, we can focus on Fayln a bit more. Unlike some other people, I am quite happy that Akia has lost her powers. I accidentally read ahead(one phrase) and read the phrase "take me back" and I'm like DOES RHYS STILL CARE FOR AKIA? I would adore that plot twist! I would ADORE THAT! Like you should do that! Then you could totally have him backstab her and be like if only there were someone that loved you Akia(Anna). XD That is something that I would look forward to in having Rhys as the villain.

The imagery here is amazing. I just am SO happy with it. I don't even know where all this imagery came from. Like the previous chapter, the imagery was fine but here it is so amazing! I am just so happy with the progress you have been making!

How many worlds are there? I still need to know what the worlds are like and how they are structured and all. I just am plain confused about that.

I can't really comment on this chapter all too much because all the logic that I talked about before applies to here and you've been doing a great job with the imagery and sentence structure. I am just so baffled by this chapter. This chapter has got me all hear felt and is definitely my favorite!

Keep calm and keep writing

Hey, Noelle~

I've got to start this off with a nitpick -

He was running at a very fast pace, one that she couldn’t keep up with.

Two sentences in and I'm already rolling my eyes. Not sure, but just saying 'very fast pace' seems to generic. Perhaps say something along the lines of taking off and dragging Akia with him? It seems like one of those moments when you couldn't think of anything and just tried to get something down :3

Now, I'm questioning why Sam mentioned that he had given Philip the locket and then changed it to he couldn't have been able to give him the locket and wasted time showing it to her. Couldn't he just wait a little bit longer until they were in safer territory before going and exposing lockets of unfathomable power? That would be more logical.

"She's not my girl," Sam retorted...

Two things: Sam says that she's 'not his girl' but he never goes on to support his point, only contradict it in saying that he's not leaving without her and that the two are partners. This one line doesn't seem to fit. Also, Dorrin just so happens to retort the next time he speaks. So, some minor repetition.

I'm crying, Noelle. Granted this isn't the first time, but oh my god. And I remember these talks that we had, where I predicted that Akia would lose her powers. Now, Akia's reaction to it all is pretty fantastic... after it happens. The entire moment her powers were leaving her body, the thoughts felt so calm. I'd think she'd be very erratic, considering her entire life is kind of being stolen away from her (yes, her life is magic). The description feels so calm, and she says its 'just flowing out' but I'd think it'd be more forceful, since Rhys would have to fight to get it out, wouldn't he? Somehow?

O.o What if Dorrin got his epic powers from doing just that. Draining others powers? That's how he's insanely strong, and then he's like a Falyn, having more than one magic in him. Perhaps that's how he does all those crazy tricks...

One thing that I'm kind of wondering is how many kinds of magic are there? We've been introduced to a couple, Shapshifters, Teleks, Seers, Mages and Magicians, but there was one point that I recall that Dorrin could move the ground, and Mages/Magicians couldn't. So, is there another kind of magic we have yet to see? I'm quite curious to find out.

Now, I can see why you'd think that this is getting boring, because the kind of things is happening over and over again. Sam and Akia run, then Akia gets caught, then they run again and repeat. The encounters never cease! At this point, I think its alright, but it seems so unlikely that they'd be able to get away so quickly and easily like that. But I did love the ending. Everything just mushed together then. Sadly ;-;

Anyways, I can't wait for more! Keep on Writing,
~Wolfare~
