Across Worlds - Chapter 31 Part 2

A/N: I don't know what I was thinking in Chapter 29. Aiden is obviously not here with everyone else. He's back at Akia's place with Falyn. So, he was never in the meeting room with them. I'm not sure if I mentioned him in this chapter or not, but you never know. If you see him just ignore him.

They had known about the vision for years. Akia didn’t know it was George who saw it until she returned to Lightport. It hadn’t been that important up to then. From what she had been told about the moonstar, she figured she was just a girl who was super powerful who would do anything to stop Rhys. But after meeting Falyn, she realized that there was a girl there. Falyn didn’t know anything about her fate or who she really was; she was just a kid wanting to live life.

It was then that Akia started looking at the vision in a completely different way. George had seen Falyn and Rhys and that was all. The area around them was blurry in the vision. What George had said about the visions were true; they could be blurry or clear. But he failed to mention that they could be a mixture of both too. So they had no idea where Falyn would be when Rhys killed her. The easy out was to keep the two of them away from each other. That could only last so long though. They needed a fool proof plan.

“Sam,” Phillip started, his voice noticeably softer. “I know that you didn’t take the news too well, but the vision is clear. We are going to try everything we can to keep Falyn safe. But in the meantime there are more pressing matters.”

Sam grunted. “More pressing than keeping someone alive?” Phillip’ glare was so intense that Sam shrunk back into his chair. He knew that Phillip had won. Keeping Falyn alive was important, but not as important as keeping the worlds together.

Philip glared for a moment longer before diverting his gaze. “Falyn needs to be involved. She’s the only one with enough powers to even go up against Rhys.”

“What about Akia?” Layna asked. “Her magic’s strong.”

Akia had to fight back a smile. Who wouldn’t be happy for a compliment like that? “I only have one magic. Falyn comes from a shapeshifter and a magician. Both those magics combined are much stronger than mine.”

“Akia’s right,” Phillip said. “Falyn is strong enough to overpower anyone at this moment even though she hasn’t been trained. She has enough instinct to create trouble. What we need form her is constant magical ability. So while we sit around and plan our attack, someone needs to train her.”

Zeke, who had been relatively quiet for a while, staring at the table, slammed his hand down on the hard surface. “I’ll do it. You don’t need me for anything else.”

Phillip nodded. “Well that’s settled. You can start once we’re finished here. I think she’s still off with her parents, right Akia?”

Akia nodded, but didn’t respond. Why did Zeke want to train Falyn so bad? She had noticed them growing closer as of late, but Zeke didn’t seem like a person to want to do something behind the scenes. He’d want to be on the frontlines, fighting against whatever terror they might face. Now he didn’t want to be there anymore.

It had to be something about Falyn. There was no other reason for him to give up the offer to fight. Akia hadn’t known him for long, but she knew enough to know what kind of person he was. She’d be suspicious, but she was done being suspicious. Zeke wasn’t on their side no matter what the others said. She knew it.

“I can go get her,” Sam volunteered.

Phillip shook his head. “I need you here. And trust me, when you hear what I need Akia to do you’re not going to want to turn it down.” Akia didn’t like the sound of that. Phillip gave her jobs all the time, but he never warned the ones around her about it.

“What is it?” she asked.

“I need you to go to Vertfay.”

Akia didn’t know how to respond. Never would she have guessed that he’d send her back to Vertfay. Or any world for that matter. It just didn’t seem safe.

“Why?” she asked. She tried to keep her high hopes in check. Vertfay would always be her home. There were enough memories left there that it had a grip around her heart. Maybe going back one final time would help give some closure.

George was the one who answered. “Rhys is there with that boy – Seth is his name, right? If someone doesn’t go in the next two hours, who knows what Rhys is going to do.”

“You know a time frame?” Sam asked. George nodded, making Sam scoff. “Your powers just keep getting more advanced, don’t they?” Akia could hear the sarcasm dripping from his voice. Both he and Akia knew enough about seer magic to know that visions were primarily of events that happened weeks ahead. Never had she heard of a vision of something that was happening at that very moment.

Then again, mages had developed their magic to become magicians. It was possible that the seers – the little of them that were left – had learned how to develop their magic as well. These short timed visions must’ve been a part of that.

George glared at Sam. “You know nothing of seer magic. You just keep sitting there and thinking of things and do your little magic trick.”

Sam was fuming. “We’re in this together. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t like you. I don’t expect you to admit the same because that would only hurt your pride—"

“Watch it, Sam.” Akia warned. If she had to pick sides, she’d be on Sam’s. But George was her friend too. Her job was to keep them off of each other’s backs. But Sam didn’t seem to be listening.

“Because you have such a reputation to uphold,” Sam barreled on. “So I’m just going to accept your silent apology. My magic is just as important as yours. And last time I checked, you can’t do anything but see things that might not even happen.”

A smirk danced across George’s lips. “Without my visions, you’d still be sitting in that lonely dorm of yours wishing that Akia would recognize you. I made you who you are, Samuel. Phillip chose you because you’re a part of what I see.”

“You know damn well that I got this because I deserved it,” Sam retorted. If it were possible, steam would be pouring out of his ears. “None of this has to do with you. In fact, you have nothing to do with this. We can easily get another seer to tell us what’s going to happen in the future.”

George leaped to his feet. Akia could feel every bit of the tension in the room as he said, “Every other seer who can do what I do is dead. Gone. They were wiped out, taken prisoners. There’s no escape from their fate. I’m the only one you have left. I’m valuable. Akia is a strong magician, you can do a few spells, Layna does that creeping mind moving trick, and Phillip keeps us all together. Of course I know that we’re in this together. That doesn’t mean that I now have to stop hating you.”

Sam’s hands were shaking as he pressed them down flat against the table. Akia knew that he was itching to punch George. Ever since they had returned to Lightport, George had been at Sam’s throat. All he wanted now was some payback. But he knew that he couldn’t do anything with Phillip watching.

“Aw, did I leave Samuel mute?”

Sam gritted his teeth as he spoke. “My name… is not… Samuel. Don’t call me that.”

“Oh right. Because that’s what your deranged sister calls you.”

All of the self control Sam had had disappeared. Before anyone could react, he was up and leaning across Zeke so he could get in George’s face. “No one is allowed to speak of my sister! Especially not you. You know nothing about her or what happened. You might hate me, but you could at least show some respect to the dead.”

George’s smug smile never left his face the entire time Sam was yelling at him. If Akia hadn’t noticed before how much George had changed since she last saw him, this sure proved it. The George she was partners with would never have attacked Sam like that. There was definitely something wrong with him.

Great, another thing for me to worry about. Akia thought. She immediately felt bad about it, but what could she do? It seemed that everything was going wrong. Of course George would choose now to bring up his dislike for Sam again.

Akia almost expected Phillip to interfere and stop the argument, but he didn’t. Instead, he was leaning back in his chair ever so slightly, watching it all unfold. It made her mad. Why wasn’t he doing something? Even by a simple snap of his fingers, George and Sam would stop. It was that easy.

Instead, someone else got involved. Layna’s chair scraped across the hard floor, making everyone flinch, as she stood and stalked over to Sam. Hands placed on his shoulders, she pulled him back down into his chair.”

“I can’t stand to see this fighting,” she said, her voice calm as ever. “Arguing isn’t going to solve anything. George, you know more than anyone that anger only leads to pain. Don’t make me start spilling your secrets.”

To Akia’s surprise, the smirk on George’s face disappeared immediately and was replaced with a scowl. Layna had something on him that he didn’t want anyone else knowing. Akia could only wonder what it was. He and Layna were partners now though, so it could be any number of things. Akia had learned so much about him just from the short amount of time they had been working together. Layna had probably been the replacement when Akia left. Layna was closer to George than Akia could’ve ever been.

Layna turned to Sam next. “Don’t think you’re off the hook. George started it, like he always does, but that doesn’t mean you have to egg him on. Just shut up and he’ll get the message.” Without another word, she floated back to her seat and sat.

Akia couldn’t help it; she stared. She hadn’t known Layna before returning to Lightport so she hadn’t known what to expect. Layna was a kind, soft spoken girl when Akia had first met her. There was definitely an air of responsibility and maturity about her, but it hadn’t come out until that moment. She was almost as good at killing a conversation as Phillip was.

“Thank you, Layna,” Phillip said, nodding his head slightly in her direction. She merely blushed and lowered her gaze. “We can’t have arguments just for the sake of arguing. No one should have to interfere, boys. You should be able to break up your own arguments. I’m not a babysitter.”

“Yes, sir,” George said through clenched teeth. Sam didn’t even bother answering. His eyes were locked on the table. The comment about his sister must’ve hit him hard. Akia didn’t blame him. Eleven years later and he still cared deeply for his dead sister. Not that Akia expected him to get over it. How did one get over losing a family member like that?

A/N 2: Sam had a sister. Well, you know that now xD She killed herself when Sam was young. She was fifteen years old. Basically, her magic got too much and took over her body, driving her crazy (I'm still working on the whole how part of that). Eventually she couldn't deal and killed herself. I'm going to work that story into an earlier chapter when I go back and edit, but I had to put it in this chapter or the argument between George and Sam wouldn't have worked.

Hello, Noelle! KatyaElefant here for another review! Let us see what we have right here!

That first paragraph is really redundant at one point where Akia says that she thought Falyn was a girl who was super powerful but then she realized that she was a girl. Maybe add a just before the a girl. Or maybe talk about how Falyn was a girl who wanted to live and breathe just like everybody else. I see that you did the 2nd one but you should change it so that it makes a bit more sense (though rewriting the novel at this point is a big no no). That really confused me and put this chapter to a bad start but we shall see if you can redemn yourself Noelle. :P

How does Akia not clearly see that Zeke likes Falyn?! Like any girl who notices that a girl is getting closer with a boy obviously means that they may have started to have a liking to each other? Like this is natural girl instinct! (Or I might be crazy and you might not want to listen to me anymore)

For the thing about Sam's sister, you could have some evil magician/mage do a spell on her and then it takes over her body. She knows that she is going insane and that she might kill someone so to spare lives, she kills herself! Boom! That masterpiece though!

Man! Sam and George really don't like each other! Like the guys with the really plain names seem to have a huge grudge against each other because they want to be the only guy with a plain name! The Name Games are so real right now!

Keep calm and keep writing

I don't remember Aiden being mentioned in chapter 29 and I just read it... Did you happen to edit (or am I that tired?)

Anyways. Hey, Noelle!

Whoa. That arguement betweent the two of them seemed so intense. Sure, we've seen Sam and George doing their minature bickering thing, but this is a whole new level. And I love that. It really shows their hatred for one another, and having Akia on the side commenting on it just brings it out even more.

And the hints are getting more and more reall. I can feel the irony oozing from this piece. We, the readers, know that Aiden is with Rhys from that one chapter, and the other, George is with Rhys as well. It makes me wonder, what about Layna? Is she in cahoots with the man, Rhys, or does she just know about George and respect that? There's so much going on, I'm really excited to find out.

I really like the story about Sam's sister. Why? Because it shows that people aren't perfect. That's one really, really big thing you've pin pointed in this novel and this little story hit it home. There's the dark magic which Rhys had to do what he did, but then there's the real magic which then took over people who are too weak. It's just a nice touch, since not everyone can be a powerful magician, can they?

IS IT MOT OBVIOUS THAT SOMETHING IS UP EITH GEORGE? He had it down to the hours. And magic doesn't work that way. I would bet money that it took so long for the mage's magic to evolve to magician.

Sorry. (Did I mention before that it's kind of late...? xD) I did have one tiny nitpick.

Zeke, who had been relatively quiet for a while, staring at the table, slammed his hand down on the hard surface. “I’ll do it. You don’t need me for anything else.”

So, in the very last part, Zeke did the exact same thing. Barely saying a word and slamming his hand on the table once to startle Akia and proceeding to disappear. Now, I'm kind of scared how Zeke is disappearing. He was once so important, but now he's been kicked to the side lines like he was forgotten, taking in favor of George. I'm really left wondering what in the world happened to him?

Anyways, I'm literally dying to know what happens next (so I trudge onward though I'm sleep deprived.) Happy Review Day and Keep on Writing,

Hi Noelle!

When it comes to this chapter I don't really have much to say! Which is why this review was so long in coming :) I think you pretty much did everything right here that you could do. We get some dialogue and we see a lot of Akia's thoughts on what is happening before her. And we know she is going to try and disobey Phillip in time as well, which makes this all the more exciting. On top of that, I can see you hinting at various possibilities. Why Zeke wants to train Falyn, why she has to go to her home and so many more little things. When you said things were coming together in this chapter, you really did mean it.

If there was anything I wanted to see in this chapter that hadn't already been mentioned by previous reviewers, it would be a change of the way Akia thinks about Phillip. Now that she is going to be going against him, can she see how controlling he seems to be? Everything he says or intends to do becomes law, and no one can go against him. Sam ends up shrinking away for simply trying - and that would be an awesome place for her understanding moment to dawn on her.

just a girl who was super powerful who would do anything to stop Rhys. But after meeting Falyn, she realized that there was a girl there.

This was a bit contradicting to each other because you said Falyn was just a girl... but then that there was a girl there. That doesn't sound too much different to me! Unless you added on to the end of the second one that there was a girl there with feelings and emotions as well. I think that's what you meant, but you just needed to pick the right words to go about saying it ;)

The easy out was to keep the two of them away

You're missing the word 'way' between the second and third word in this sentence.

Now he didn’t want to be there anymore.

Wait a second... just because Zeke is going to be training Falyn does that really mean he can't participate in any of the battles? Sure, he can participate in the final one, right? And any of the ones they need Falyn for. He might be busy for some or the majority of the others but I didn't think training someone meant it would be automatically impossible for them to fight as well. To me this didn't make much sense, so maybe you just needed to explain what you meant a bit better?

I wonder why Sam and George disliked each other in the first place? You have made it sound like they have a history of arguing, but I can't see why. You said George had changed, so what was it that made them clash before? I need to know a bit more of the background information here. If you have mentioned it in previous chapters, then I suggest you mention it again so that we readers have a little bit of a reminder. Oh, and this makes me notice that when Akia says she doesn't like George anymore, I wanted a bit more focus on that. People might've changed in her absence, and I thought she might notice some more of the subtle changes in his demeanor and so.

I really have nothing else to say! This chapter seemed fairly perfect to me, so keep this quality of it up. I will be back for more when I can be ;)

Timmy here :3

So I am just going to ignore the urge to start this off with my useless review introduction, and head straight into the important stuff. So the argument between Sam and George? I am still not sure what to think about it. Reading through it, I didn't see why they weren't more at each other's throats beforehand. Like, you're saying all their words and telling all their emotions, but I am not seeing it visually. Okay, that's not entirely true. You're very good at inserting character actions into the piece as I head through dialogue and such. You're doing amazing there. I am seeing everything from Sam, and he's all good as far as showing his emotions via his actions. I love how you do him. But with George... I am not seeing it quite as well as I would like. I am seeing the occasional A smile danced across his lips stuff, but nothing that actually tells me what he is feeling.

And the ending of the argument? Right when George mentions the sister you never told us about that had died? How she had called Sam "Samuel"? For how much emotion I was seeing of Sam even before George threw the sister thing at him, well, I was just expecting more. You say that Akia thought he was going to punch George. I think he should punch him. I really do. Because it would show how he is feeling, and that he isn't afraid of George. Because I know that Sam is just really, really angry about what George is saying there, and how he is pretty much attacking his heart, so it seems odd that he didn't punch him or attack him physically in some way when he got right in his face.

As a side note, this chapter could use a quick read-through for technical errors. I may end up pulling out some missing commas if I run out of things to say (which happens quite often), but there are odd things in here. Extra quotation marks floating around at one place, and words sandwiched together, as well as a few misspellings. They aren't big deals by any stretch, especially when you have your writing beside them, but I would consider reading through once or twice to pull them out and fix them before your other reviewers scramble over each other to point them out so it's easier to concentrate on the piece rather than the occasional error.

Because that’s what your deranged sister calls you.

So this is telling me that George didn't know his sister was dead? If that is the case, then leave it. You're doing fine. But if George did know, perhaps you should change calls to called - past tense.

as she stood and stalked over to Sam

wait wut For this scene, and her deliberation, stalked didn't seem like the right word. For a second, I thought you meant stomped, but that doesn't seem right for Layna, either. Perhaps some other action which means, um, calm walking over there? I dunno. xD

Layna was a kind, soft spoken girl when Akia had first met her

Just telling you what I thought of Layna when she first met Akia. I thought she was an over-bubbly, very happy person - although still mature and intelligent. While she definitely seemed kind when I was reading through those first chapters with her, I never thought of her as soft-spoken, because she was just so happy and bubbly. While I know that you're meaning soft spoken as in she didn't like approaching arguments or getting in-between people, it did throw me for a minute so I could stop and think about it.

Zeke wasn’t on their side no matter what the others said

Comma after side

Oh right. Because that’s

Comma after oh

she floated back to her seat and sat

This is probably just me, and this is a measly nitpick, but and sat adds nothing to the sentence, especially because the reader knows that she's going back to her seat to sit down. heehee

You made up the sister thing in this chapter, didn't you? I think the deranged sister is an absolutely amazing thing to go off of. Like, really. Just me thinking about it for a moment, so many possibilities are there. It could be the reason for Sam's close watch and concern for Falyn - because she has a lot of magic, too. I would imagine he would think about his sister quite often, too. Gosh, that is an amazing thing to throw in there. >.< Every single character needs something to have helped shape them, direct their decisions. And I think the memory of this sister is what guides Sam's hand. And the deranged/dead sister thing does an excellent job making his character deeper and with more background. As usual, you throw in the little thing about Zeke and Akia not being sure about if he is a good guy or not. I am not sure, either, and I have decided to just sit on the fence and wait until Zeke shows what he truly is. I do hope he shows how he is a good fellow, though. I don't know if Falyn can handle any more hurt than what she's experiencing now. And she needs Zeke alongside her. Now I am anxious. >.<

This book just keep getting better and better, each consecutive chapter much more awesomeish than the previous one. I am curious as to what the numbers of words this novel is? Like, the compiled document would make it how long? You seem as though you should be reaching a point in the novel where you'll have to make a decision of split it into two books (or three or four), and just figure out what your choices are.
~Darth Timmyjake

Yeah, I guess Sam punching out George would've worked. He is pretty pissed off after all. But with Phillip there I was more hesitant to let him. I don't know.

It's just over 70k at this point. There's definitely going to be a sequel if not more at this point. My only problem now is figuring out what will carry over and what has to be resolved at the end of this book.

70k is a long ways. So you're thinking of another sequel... when? Yeah, definitely find a resolving point somewhere. How your book is written and such, I could definitely see it as a longer one.

SAM PUNCH GEORGE. Although, yeah, you are right. With Phillip there...

Although if Sam punches George it'll really piss off Phillip and it'll transition out of the meeting a bit better. Decisions decisions. More things for me to think of for editing.

1.In one of your sentences you have connected a word that needs to be two separate words:
". From what she had been told about the moonstar." Separate moon star into two words.
2.Another word that needs to be seperated in this sentence:
"Falyn comes from a shapeshifter and a magician." Shape shiftier has to be two separate words.
3.Don't use the word damn as it is a bad word and if you offend me you will possibly offend other readers.
4.You need to put a colon between this word in this sentence:
All of the self control Sam had had disappeared. Self-control has to have a hyphen. Please fix that.
5.I like all the magical and mystical connections here.
6.I liked how you described Layna to have a level-head and calmly and kindly stopped an argument and possibly a fight from happening between George and Sam.
7.I don't understand what the magical world and the world is.
8.I hope this review helps and I as always encourage you to keep on writing, editing, reviewing, and posting.

Hey!!! :D

Those guys just can't seem to keep their hands off each other! You sure are making me dislike a lot of characters; Rhys, Zeke, now Phillip gets on my nerves a bit... or at least, in this part. Now there's George, of course. George is very disturbing to watch. It's like he enjoys making people up set. O.O Well, or, just Sam, perhaps.

You have lots of likeable characters too, which evens it out and allows me to sit back and enjoy the show! Am I making sense? Not really. XP I'm trying to say that I like that so many characters are annoying! I'm not sure why, I just like it... it makes it a bit more realistic that way... >.>

slammed his hand down on the hard surface. “I’ll do it. You don’t need me for anything else.”

Zeke seems to be doing a lot of hand slamming this chapter. You know you had him do that in the last part? I don't remember what for... but having him do it too much makes it seem almost comical! I'm pretty sure you just forgot that he did that in the last part, so I thought I'd point it out. :-P

but Zeke didn’t seem like a person to want to do something behind the scenes.

( Now's when I get to contemplate the universe! Mwahahahahaha!!!! ) So, if Zeke's not one to do things behind the scenes, I think I might know what he's up too! By taking on the responsibility of training Falyn, he now has control over the Moonstar in TWO ways! Not only is he in the process of stealing her heart, but soon, very soon, he'll have control over HOW she learns magic ( I'm assuming there's probably a couple different styles of how to use magic since that always seems to be the case with everything... but maybe not )! He could teach he a freakin' spell that could destroy herself, or something. Honestly, the possibilities are endless and I'm supper excited!!! ( Why do I feel like I'm rooting for the bad guys? XD )

I think I'm going to be the most heart-broken when Zeke betrays them. :/ It's going to be so sad! Dx

Keep up the awesomeness, Noelle!!!

Hehe. Zeke is my favorite character to write. And he's definitely going to cause some trouble ;) I'm looking forward to it too :3
