The Tea-Seller

by TheRebel2007

I stand about in front of a beach
And crave for things - all beyond my reach;
And to you, I intend to beseech -
What wrong did I do?

I went on doing my normal chores -
Sell to the people on the shores,
Listen to music and the sea's roars;
What wrong did I do?

Late in the evening, I stand in delight
To check my money and my coffers' sight
As I check on shadows' elongated heights -
What wrong did I do?

At night, I go back to my roadside-hut,
In front of overgrown wheat and smut;
Had dinner with my family; but tell me what,
What wrong did I do?

I woke up at dawn and set up my stall -
Got a couple and kept rolling the ball
And fed them tea and biscuits and all,
What wrong did I do?

In the evening, when I was packing,
A rich couple came to me a-cracking,
I told them that I was stacking -
What wrong did I do?

The lady took one of my cups made of clay,
Smashed it on the ground and told me "Hey!
Never refuse to what the rich say!"
What wrong did I do?

A policeman came by as he heard the noise,
Of the cup's crack, and the woman's voice,
They told that, on her, my hands I did poise,
What wrong did I do?

A few came by to tell the truth to him,
But they were repelled by threats and bribing,
As I constantly denied the fictitious scene,
What wrong did I do?

Now I stand in handcuffs, looking at the sea,
Wondering if I will ever, again sell tea,
Entering the van, thinking of my family -
O tell me, what wrong, what wrong did I do?

Hello! I just wanted to leave a quick review!

For starters, I think you picked such a relevant yet scarcely chosen theme to write a poem on, so well too! I love your choice of words and characters - having a tea-seller as the protagonist is a powerful tool in capturing that 'ordinary-seaside-person' atmosphere along with their innocence and routine. I also appreciated the rich imagery here.

The repetition of 'What wrong did I do?' is a painful reminder of all who are wrongfully accused and the poem's conclusion brings the wealthy into the picture and how wealth is misused causing the innocent man to suffer.

I find this to be a well-penned, poignant poem that portrays a chance event while also depicting man's volatile nature when it comes to wealth and questioning their integrity.
Thank you for sharing!

This shows how easily society can be swayed. Even though multiple people saw what happened, they were quickly bribed. Now, there's a wife at home with her children struggling to make money. This also shows how easily the rich can get away with things if they take advantage of their wealth. What will the man be charged with? How long will he remain in jail? What will happen to his family? Will the man ever sell tea again? Will the rich woman ever face consequences for her actions? So many questions that may remain unanswered. But what we do know is that a man was taken advantage of because he was not rich.

Hi there Rebel

1. What did i like the most in the poem Rebel is that Late in the evening, I stand in delight
To check my money and my coffers' sight
As I check on shadows' elongated heights -
What wrong did I do?

At night, I go back to my roadside-hut,
In front of overgrown wheat and smut;
Had dinner with my family; but tell me what,
What wrong did I do?

I woke up at dawn and set up my stall -
Got a couple and kept rolling the ball
And fed them tea and biscuits and all,
What wrong did I do? this gets me Rebel in the poem of tea-sellar It appears that this person was just a tea-seller but unfortunately came across the wrong person who ruined their lives.It sucks the way people cater to the rich and act like they’re gods

2. What do i think needs to be improved Rebel is that in the poem of tea-sellar i always thought that the family had a restaurant because it says here that I woke up at dawn and set up my stall -
Got a couple and kept rolling the ball
And fed them tea and biscuits and all,
What wrong did I do? Here are some clues of what i found in the poem about what i said was I woke up at dawn and set up my stall -
Got a couple and kept rolling the ball
And fed them tea and biscuits and all,
What wrong did I do? so i was right the poem was actually talking about on what i had just said

Have fun writing!

Jay"

It appears that this person was just a tea-seller but unfortunately came across the wrong person who ruined their lives.It sucks the way people cater to the rich and act like they’re gods.If one person stands up to them then that person gets shunned by society as if they had done some unspeakable crime.The question is “What wrong did I do?” I hope that you have a lovely day/night.
