For, when we are not creating(EDITED)

In If Words were Watercolor Balloons Poetry

I tread my thoughts, feet
lashing out.

Consistently, I dread the way
I am surrounded, more completely than

if they were water, but thicker, stickier.
Deadlier.

They capture me within, held hostage; Until,
inspiration breaks through bitterly grey stratus.

I wait, a feverish need to create,
a never-ending cycle, greatness; Then, dismay.

Some days, I swim
basking in my element.

The sun spilling strings of
metaphors that brighten my words

Others, I drown
confined to a world of nothing more

than blank pages, closed doors;
books with which I can’t compare,

For now.

It's quite a heavy poem, isn't it? But it's very much open to interpretation. Anyone can see it has deep meaning to you, whether personal or emotional. There's no doubt in my mind that you are an author of many wordd - by that, I mean your range of vocabulary is impressive but also you know how to structure it so that those words all strike your reader.

An excellent piece of writing.

Hi, Dakota here!

You have chosen a lovely, relatable topic for all of us authors out there. Inspiration. The muse. Creativity. Some days it's there, cheering us on from the sidelines, and others-- silence.

You've done a great job capturing the desperation we feel with writing through subtle imagery. I got a sense of being lost at sea right away, drowning in hopelessness with my own negativity weighing me down. But then you contrasted the thoughts with water, saying they were "thicker, stickier, Deadlier".

I love the simple auxesis in this section, beginning by stating that the thoughts were worse than water, "thicker", and then describing the thoughts as sticky, reinforcing the sense of hopelessness by creating a trapped sensation. And, finally, "deadlier". This word carries a strong connotation of inescapability and finality, which emphasizes the extent to which the thoughts weigh writers down.

Your word choice supports the idea of being trapped-- "capture", "within", and "hostage", and I commend you for that. In poetry, as you already seen to know, it is imperative to identify exactly what kind of tone you are going for and back it up with similar diction.

Towards the middle, I noticed that you used two semicolons. I'm all for semicolons, trust me; they plague my writing like nobody's business. However, I think that when you go from drowning in your thoughts to inspiration breaking through, it would be more effective to use a period to clearly contrast the two ideas. In addition, the comma after "Until" made me pause and hindered the flow of the piece a bit. Instead of:
"They capture me within, held hostage; Until, inspiration breaks through bitterly grey clouds."
try:
"They capture me within, holding me hostage. But then, inspiration breaks through bitterly grey clouds."

But "a feverish need to create" really resonated with me. This short part captures the stage between despair and inspired wonderfully. "A feverish need to create"... I might have to quote you on that.

The ending to your piece, the "For now", also captures the "never-ending cycle" you described, one of "greatness; Then, dismay". It pulls your piece together nicely with a short, clever finish.

This is a fantastic poem overall, one that I can definitely relate to. I hope your muse continues to produce similarly great works like this one!

Thank you so much! I'm glad that you think it captures feelings we all can relate to, hearing that others relate is my favorite compliment. I would be flattered if you quote me on that, feel free :). And, I think I will change that line around like you suggested. Thank you for taking the time to review, and for all the nice words.
