The Normal Ones

E - Everyone

In Poems

We’ve never really been fully aware before,
Never have we really understood though we understand.
We’ve never thought about our problems or their solutions
Only have we skimmed the fat off the top.

But now it seems like MY mind can’t stop working.
The rusty gears inside my head are slowly turning;
Over and over, allowing the dust that has gathered
fall from the metal teeth like rain.

And the images of this life I live are coming so clearly now,
Each puzzle piece fitting in its predetermined place.
For the reality of everything I see and hear,
Continues to hit me like tiny silver bullets
Making me bleed, internally -killing me. Slowly.

I keep feeling these voices in my head -whispering
their lies.
All of their little words pushing against my eardrum,
Bouncing up and down, up and down like a trampoline.

And I scream for them to stop, though I know they’ll never
stop.
Because we all have these whispering voices in our heads.
We all hear their lies.

Yet society has taught us the perfect ways to block them out,
To push harder against our eardrums that wish to bleed the
whispers.
It’s not until one hears them again that they come to understand-
what they never really understood.

You call them crazy because they’re different.
You call them crazy because they hear things.
You call them crazy because their souls have finally broken free
What if I told you that the true crazy people in this world,
Are the ones that lead you, those who sit by your side
They are the people you believe to be normal.

But I finally understand what I never understood.
And the gears inside my head are continually turning.
We are not crazy,
Crazy is just a definition created by a crazy society.

Those of us who really see,
We are the normal one.
So please, be crazy.

Not sure if this is a celebration of mental illness or the girl from Melanie Martinezs' "Mad Hatter" making a very elaborate but at the same time very sad poem.

You can really look at this poem in many different angles. You could look at it as a person with an actual mental disorder finally casting out his attempts at being normal and pointing a finger at society for his disease, or a perfectly ordinary individual being called crazy for being different and finally addressing that issue. Either way, it intends to spark a revolution of some sorts. Not all revolutions end well.

Some problems I had (mostly nitpicking):

-"But now it seems like MY mind can’t stop working." Why's my capitalized?

-"Because we all have these whispering voices in our heads.
We all hear their lies." Are they lies, or are they the truth? You seem to be asserting that society is the liar and the whispers may be right, but if that's the case this line may not make sense. Unless, of course, this is all the internal debate of said mentally ill individual in the first theory.

-"Those of us who really see,
We are the normal one.
So please, be crazy." No criticism. Pretty cool line, albeit a bit teen-grunge-ish. But I'm a notorious fan of teen grunge.

Again, this is a poem to start a revolution with. But I'd say consider not making the tagline "crazy", just for political correctness--it would be unfortunate if someone read this very good poem and thought it was celebrating mental disorders. You don't have to follow political correctness, of course, because we're artists. We give middle fingers to that sort of thing. But still, that's just my suggestion.

Signing out--EM.

thank you for your poem, the poem kind of represents, well writers. To me a true writer (in a sense) hear's things in their heads and they are different form the rest of the world and that's what makes them so damn good. So I tried to cature that feeling while kind of making it vague. Again, though, thank you. I appreciate it.

Ah, yes, that makes sense. I just thought it was a poem for all the social outcasts of the world.

Also, happy review day. Are you doing well?

Hiya, I'm here to give a review! It'll be a tad long so bare with me ahaha! I'll begin with analyzing the start of the poem! :)
_
"We’ve never really been fully aware before,
Never have we really understood though we understand.
We’ve never thought about our problems or their solutions
Only have we skimmed the fat off the top."
_

The beginning captured me with the first line, as it made me suddenly think "What haven't I been aware of?" and that made me want to keep on reading! You also repetitively used the word 'never' in the first three lines, which although it could of been replaced with other words instead of the same, if repetition was what you were aiming for to get 'the message' across then I'd say it worked! Also the last line of this section was very good, 'skimming the fat off the top," reminded me of the line "Never seeing the full picture," yet twisted around to make it more original! I really liked it.

_
"But now it seems like MY mind can’t stop working.
The rusty gears inside my head are slowly turning;
Over and over, allowing the dust that has gathered
fall from the metal teeth like rain. "
_

I do like this one, however there is a few minor things I would personally change (you don't have to though, it's just my opinion.) Instead of the word 'but' I'd say 'however' would work much better, and the capitalization of the 'my' would still have the same impact if it wasn't. I really like the second line, it's imaginative and made me actually picture gears turning in someone's head, which is odd but it worked!
_
"And the images of this life I live are coming so clearly now,
Each puzzle piece fitting in its predetermined place.
For the reality of everything I see and hear,
Continues to hit me like tiny silver bullets
Making me bleed, internally -killing me. Slowly. "
_

I love the first line as I can relate to it quite well, and for the second line in this section I'm loving the use of 'predetermined place." Instead of 'For the reality of everything I see and hear," I would replace 'For the' with just 'The reality..etc" I love the last line of it, however I'd personally tweak it a little to "Making me bleed internally, slowly killing me.."
_
"I keep feeling these voices in my head -whispering
their lies.
All of their little words pushing against my eardrum,
Bouncing up and down, up and down like a trampoline. "
_

I don't see anything that could be changed in this, I really like this a lot!
_
"And I scream for them to stop, though I know they’ll never
stop.
Because we all have these whispering voices in our heads.
We all hear their lies."
_

The only thing I'd tweak about this little section is the first line, and instead put "I scream for them to stop, however I know they never will,"
_
"Yet society has taught us the perfect ways to block them out,
To push harder against our eardrums that wish to bleed the
whispers.
It’s not until one hears them again that they come to understand-
what they never really understood."
_

I love this section way too much, however I'd just tweak the second line a little with "prevent" instead of bleed. Love it either way though!
_
"You call them crazy because they’re different.
You call them crazy because they hear things.
You call them crazy because their souls have finally broken free
What if I told you that the true crazy people in this world,
Are the ones that lead you, those who sit by your side
They are the people you believe to be normal."
_

First of all, I love the repetitive use of the words 'You call them crazy," and the different reasons why they do afterwards. It really made me think. I'd place a question mark after "What if I told you that the true crazy people in this world are the ones who leave you, those who sit by your side?" Also, I love the last line.
_
"But I finally understand what I never understood.
And the gears inside my head are continually turning.
We are not crazy,
Crazy is just a definition created by a crazy society."
_

Loving this whole section, wouldn't change a thing if I'm being honest, especially the last line!
_
"Those of us who really see,
We are the normal one.
So please, be crazy. "
_

I like the message the last section has, however I'd tweak it just a little bit to say,

"To those of us who really see,
We are the normal ones,
Please be crazy, be free."

Overall I really liked this poem and the message behind it, despite the few minor things I'd tweak a little! Keep writing, you're really good! :)
