A realization

In Poems

For years I searched

For the kinder side of life,

For the kinder side of humanity,

All of this though, was just my attempt

To find the kindness in myself.

I couldn't find it,

Until now.

I am sick,

It will take me a long time to recover,

Perhaps this happened for a reason,

Perhaps God saw that I needed help,

And he gave it to me.

I saw the sun rise this morning,

And saw the snow glittering and sparkling.

The beauty took my breath away,

And I realized, I had finally found it.

I had finally found the beauty of life.

I know that life isn't always beautiful,

But there is always something to

Get us through the troubled times.

I've realized though, that I can make

Life beautiful for others, and in consequence,

Life is more beautiful for me.

All this I realized upon a snowy morning,

All this I discovered when I became sick,

And while I hate it, at the same time,

I can't be thankful enough.

Hey there, finally getting around to checking our your poetry! Review day is a good time to do that! :)

First, I wanted to say I really admire a few points of this piece.

1. Specificity
Thank you for tackling a specific emotion and series of events in this piece. I see so many generic poems around about some vague idea that as a reader I just can't pin-point, and it makes it really hard to connect to the poem. You did a good job in explaining the emotional conflict though of the speaker - and then explaining how they had this series of spiritual revelations that gave them hope to make it through. I think if anything could be changed as far as specificity is you could lean a bit more into the conflict in the first stanza - you do a beautiful job giving imagery and description to the sunrise and resolution - and I'd love to see that level of description in the first part. Give the readers a bit more on why the speaker hasn't been able to find the "kinder side of life" etc. Maybe even injecting some imagery or contrasting darkness into that section. Overall, this poem was easy to follow and understand and had clear character development and narrative resolution which is so important to making a connection to a reader. I could feel along with the narrator the relief of seeing that sunshine after all that happened in their life.

2. Emotive Spirituality
I'd also congratulate for tackling not just spirituality - but emotive spirituality. I have found in spiritual poems, a lot of them just end up sounding dead or hollow, because people write like the transcendent is just a psychological rather than an emotional encounter, and for a reader that makes spiritual poems boring! In this poem though you inject emotion right into the spiritual encounter, which I believe is more how the Psalms are written too. King David always was intensely emotional in the Psalms, and that's why we still connect deeply with them today - because it's more than a "head experience" but a "heart experience" too - and good poetry will always touch both those elements. I saw this mostly in that last stanza actually where the speaker is relieved and also has this contrasting conflict of still feeling sick - they see the reality of the world but also hang on to the gratitude - some complicated double-emotions going on - and it made it interesting and layered. Well done!

3. Imagery
The last part I want to highlight is that beautiful imagery you have in stanza two,
"I saw the sun rise this morning,
And saw the snow glittering and sparkling.
The beauty took my breath away,
And I realized, I had finally found it."

Simple but direct, finely worded language that starts to paint a picture for the reader. I would love if you could connect some of this imagery to the rest of the poem too - painting a picture is what makes a poem live in the minds of readers even after they've finished reading. I also kind of liked the simplicity of the language here - you do a bit more than just saying "pretty snow" - but you don't go over-kill with adjectives... just enough to paint a picture and connect it to the piece. I think there's opportunity for some darker imagery in the first stanza.

Overall, this was a nice and clear reflection - as someone who believes in God, I found the spiritual components to be particularly nice, especially in how the speaker recognizes that finding God/ finding hope / having revelation - doesn't fix everything but it gives life meaning, and gives something to hold on to. This is realistic without being artificial, or fake. Thanks for sharing your poetry! Can't wait to read more.

"The beauty took my breath away"
Just like this song. It is so perfect, it describes all the real feelings, when you are sick and the snow falls down...
And i love the fact, that you are thankful for everything in life. Through out the song i caught myself looking through the window and thought the same thing. God gave us snow so why not enjoy in it. I later went out with my sister and play in the snow. Your poem really changed my day and i'm happy for that.
So, thank you for making my day more excited. Get well soon! :)

I like the imagery in the line, "glittering and sparkling," it creates a fuzzy feeling within me. "I can make Life more beautiful for others, and in consequence, Life is more beautiful for me." I love this line, stating that if your life is lacking in beauty, perhaps, providing the beauty for others could provide beauty for oneself. That's a great thought, and a rare message. One I can definatly get behind. Not only that, but I like how your telling this story from a time when you are sick. This is only a detail, but relevant to the poem seeing as i'm imagining the times when I am sick. You feel terrible from the inside, and the fact that your studying the beauty of nature, when the nature of your own body is currently poor, just warms my heart. It makes me think you can find the beauty in anything. At any place, or any time. I realate to the line, "All of this though, was just my attempt To find the kindness in myself." I have low self-esteem, and I often look for any exceptions within myself, for better moral, perhaps. I feel like this is a big expression for you, and I admire you included it in your poem, it's fitting. I love this poem, when reading it, it puts a warm, happy, and secure feeling in my heart.

I am so happy!

Katnes here with a review
This review is not intended to offend you or make your work seem bad. However you may be offended anyway so be warned!
Style and Grammar
Your grammar is good and I can't see any spelling mistakes. Good job there. But style I noticed a few thinks I would suggest correcting. You repeated the words kindness
I searched for the KINDER side of life
I would try changing out kinder the secant time for another word. Maybe like this
I searched for the kinder side of life
I quested for the compassion in mankind
To find that all of it was just an attempt to find the humanity within me.
I couldn't find it, until now.
How does that sound? Another thing you repeatedly did was use and at the start of a sentence as wells though. Like in this sent
And I realized, I had finally found it.

I had finally found the beauty of life.

I know that life isn't always beautiful,

But there is always something to

Get us through the troubled times.

I've realized though . . .
I realized I had finally found it. Just take out the and in I realized. It will sound better without it.
You really should try other words to use besides realized and discover. Try using a thesaurus. I know that sounds like what your teacher would say but it really helps.
Also this sentence also could use some work.
I've realized though, that I can make

Life beautiful for others, and in consequence,

Life is more beautiful for me.
I've come to understand that I can make life beautiful fore others, and as a result life is more
gorgeous for me.
Once again all of this are my suggestions.
Hope this helps

One of the things I love about YWS is the quote generator. For example, I'm reading a really serious work, and then I see "Moo. - cow" at the bottom of the page.
