Soli Deo gloria

  • In the early fall, my mother cans our harvest vegetables,
    mashing tomatoes into sauce,
    and working cucumbers into pickles,
and pushing beans into vinegar jars -
and for a moment the prairie grasses sigh
    in homestead relief -

    it hasn't all been undone...
    look how they keep hold
    of yesterday's fruits,
surely the earth will turn again

    i always assume her canning
is more about keeping ritual than vegetable
    more about memory than meal-prepping,
because she tells stories of her mother
while she cans, busy hands, and steaming water,
blistered knuckles, and rolling laughter -

and i imagine these are the same stories
her mother told her daughter, and so on and
so forth, and isn't that all an awfully lot
to pack into a jar of tomatoes?

  • Another set of #ReviewerShoutout s , and this time from the POETRY side of things ~

@Que is such a wise and thoughtful poetry reviewer - (no surprise there, because that also describes her poetic voice ~) and I have enjoyed peaking at some of her reviews this month while I browse through poetry looking for things to review!

Also a new poet on the scene @candyhearts JUST JOINED YWS but she is rocking it this month - already having written 23 reviews this #RevMo and with such insightful poetic notes, she's got great advice! (also have you read her first posted poem because it's amazing?!)

Thanks for lending your poetic wisdom to us this month you two! #ReviewerShoutout

alliyah oh weird - YWS put a space between "shoutout"_"s" you can see if you click the "quote" or "repost" button... @_@ strange

    WEEK TWO REVMO CHECK-IN

We are about half-way through this amazing month otherwise known as Review Month! And you know that that means? It's time for another check-in! Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who has been contributing towards our site-wide challenge! Currently as a site we've written 246 reviews out of the 750 needed to meet our goal! We'll have to pick up the pace a bit if we want to reach that goal, but it's still within reach. Let's do this!

The Green Room continues to get shaved down - now with only 35 works with 0 reviews and 82 works with 1 review - that's better than what we started the month with! Do you think we could tackle those 35 works with 0 reviews by our check in next week? I bet so!

Remember you've got lots of activities to participate in this month like our Checklist Challenge that is ongoing! :)

Well without further ado, let's give this week's #ReviewerShoutouts !

    Still in Team Tortoise
The following members are still diligently reviewing every. single. day! Congratulations to @vampricone6783, @Que, @Kaia, @Moonlily, and @@theromanticchemist - nicely done! Half-way to the finish line tortoises!

Boasting DARK TURQUOISE usernames with 10+ reviews
    @Kaia, @Que, @Cheerio, @alliyah, @theromanticchemist, @chrysanthemumcentury, @Moonlily, @vampricone6783

And debuting the beautiful BRONZE usernames with 20+ reviews written
    Congratulations to @candyhearts & @Ley !!!

Keep up the wonderful work reviewers! Still plenty of time to join in the reviewing fun as well as earn yourself a fun temporary username color - More details here.

Next Check In: September 21 with 35 reviews for Silver! <.<

hi alliyah!! i have to ask this. you have these really cool graphics in all of your napo threads, where do you make them?? do you use canva?

alliyah Thanks! It's really a combination of different things! I like to use a lot of original photos, origami, and watercolor paintings so some of the art is just mine that I made and photographed then edited words onto -> I also do some digital art like in 2020 I did all the bird doodles, and then for the year with bug doodles I did all those (mostly in PowerPoint!) In the last three years though I have been doing more in canva and sometimes a combination of canva and powerpoint and sometimes a combo of my art & powerpoint & canva! :) this year my opening image is a watercolor painting I did, with a filter over it to enhance the green hue and then words from canva. :)

redcarnation ohh i've never used powerpoint for anything other than those dreaded school presentations, but i might try now. i'm actually trying to learn to make better graphics these days and i mainly use canva. i love the idea of editing original photographs though!!

  • This is the pale part of autumn
which is not quite gray, not quite light,
not quite warm, not quite cool,
    just stirring and restless -
like there are ghosts in the air,
    like there's something filling
    all this empty space -
    like spiderwebs between rafters,
like crow-calls in the silence of dusk,
and soon, soon, the leaves will turn -
    but for now, we wait

Do You Want To Join The In-depth Poetry Reviewing Event?

    Image

Do you want to receive quality, in-depth reviews on your poetry? In the midst of RevMo, the mod team is hosting a special poetry based reviewing event for committed poets, wanting to write and receive in-depth and quality reviews.

    What is the event?

For this event, you will submit one of your poems to be reviewed. This can be a work you have published on YWS previously, or a new one that you publish for this event. You will be assigned to leave two quality and in depth reviews on two other poems that have been submitted for the event. In return, you will also receive two in-depth reviews on your poem, from other participants.

What exactly is an in depth and quality review?

This is a review that is written after closely reading the poem, analyzing the content the best you can, and should include impressions, critiques, compliments, quotes, and follow an organized structure. It should be long enough to include and cover all of these points. It is not a review that is written in a few minutes, rather it is something that takes time and effort, basically- the best review you can write! Reviews written with AI are considered Review Spam and are not allowed.

You will receive your asssigned poems to review on September 15th. Your two reviews must be submitted by September 27th.

    How do I sign up?

Sign ups will be open from September 1st to 14th and there is a limit of 12 spots available. To sign up, please send a security deposit of 1000 points to PoetryBot and post below once you have done so. Once you complete your two reviews for the event, you will get all of these points returned to you, if you don't complete your reviews, you will not receive the points back. Also, by September 12th, please PM @EllieMae with a link to the poem that you would like to have reviewed. It must be published on YWS.

If you have any questions, please reply to this post, or PM. one of the event organizers, @EllieMae, @alliyah, or @OrabellaAvenue.

  • A little unsolicited friendly reminder ~~~

If in the Writing Olympics, gold wasn't for you,
and silver, and bronze evaded you too,
please remind yourself the value added to your crew,
the work that you tried, and the strides anew!

If you didn't meet your word count for LSS,
I encourage you to take a deep breath -
after all, we're writing for fun, with friends,
and isn't the whole story what matters in the end?

If your name didn't change to dark cyan,
if you missed a day of tortoise in the month's span,
remember you can only do as much as you can -
and the authors still appreciate their latest reviewing fan!

If your novel has slowed, and the writer's block is strong,
if your imagery is cramped, and you feel your poems don't belong,
we all go through valleys; rests are part of the song!
So while you're taking a break, let us cheer you along!

If for RevMo this year, you're busy with work, life, or school,
if you won't add a hundred reviews to the reviewing pool,
we still want you here, we still think you're cool!
You know what? You're welcome and valuable just being you!
