You're like the candle
flickering in the window.
You are small and beautiful,
but no one takes
the time to really notice you.
You are always there,
eyes in the back of your head—the little candle
waiting to be seen, to be realized—but you never are.
They walk by you all night
and you wish
they would take you to bed
with them.
You wish they would
watch your wax drip and let your flicker
lure them to sleep.
But they pass you
and head upstairs.
Then, they hesitate.
Your heart fills your chest,
your flame brightens—the little candle that could.
They come back to you and
blow you out
before retreating to their cold beds.
You are angry,
you are jealous of the bed
and of the stairs.
They don't have eyes
in the back of their head but
they are appreciated
day after day.
Why can't that be you?
You shiver as the last drip of wax
glides down your melted spine.

That made my heart happy. By making it sad. That was such a different take on a candle, I've heard several poems about them but few as thoughtful as this one. Your wording was eloquent and refreshingly simple and yet heart-wrenching also. I liked how simple the candle's objective was and it also made me wonder what the candle would feel if it WAS taken upstairs, and then burnt out. Which would also be sad. Maybe I shouldn't think about that...
Job well done, old sport!
I like the idea of being compared to the candle. When I read this I felt a sense of loneliness and abandonment. I felt like, if I were the one like the candle, that I was so hopeful. I was blind with the possibilities of being useful, but I ended up being tragically let down. I loved how sad it was. It is very relatable to your average person especially if they feel neglected or perhaps lonely. I think we all feel like a candle at some points. I love the last two lines. It shows such sadness in a small amount of words and is a perfect conclusion to your poem.
It's a unique idea, isn't it? You're comparing a candle with something or someone who is ignored, yet you mentioned that the bed and stairs are admired. Anyway, I like the lines for their flow, I like the poem for being a little out of the box. I can't really come to terms with the idea od a candle as something that is ignored really but then I don't have to. It's your poem and your imagination. One thing I notice that at the beginning of some sentences you start with a capital letter but while in others you have ignored it. That's something you can work upon. I enjoyed the read. Cheers.
Hello! I love the idea of being compared to a candle. Quite bright if I do say so myself.

So let's get this started. I liked this poem but at times I didn't feel as if I was a candle. I felt as if I was something else. I don't know how to expand on that anymore.
Also, I felt as if in some parts I was rushing through lines and at awkward spots I would slow down. So maybe add some commas or just some punctuation here and there.
And, there is also the breaking of some of the stanzas. It feels a bit odd, some at two lines, other at five like here:
You are angry,
you are jealous of the bed
and of the stairs.
They don't have eyes
in the back of their head but
they are appreciated
day after day.
Try breaking it up a bit more! But overall this was a great poem!
But the last line seems inconclusive. Not really an ending. Feels as if should be more. But hey! Maybe I am just thinking too deep of it!
ScandalousPhoenix out
Hey there! I love the subject of your poem, you illuminated (hehe) the often forgotten simple beauties of things such as candles, and personified it. Personally I think those are the best kinds of poems. I only have a couple notes. One, I was slightly confused by the random capitalization of the first letters on each line, I would suggest capitalizing all the letters but you can go either way. But consistency with that is important. Next, there were a couple of lines that go way out past the other lines. It didn't mess up the flow, and probably not a lot of people other than would even notice, but it's just a little pet peeve of mine. If I ever have a line that's super long and everything else is short, I always either break it up into two lines or lengthen the other lines little by little, so it's kind of like an introduction to the super long line and it's gradual. That probably sounded a little strange, but oh well. Anyway so I don't really know how you'd change it, and I guess there's nothing wrong with it so you can ignore this little part of my review if you so please.
Your flow is smooth and I like the way you broke up each line. Yeah. This has been a segment from Mylena's Trying to Review Things, have a wonderful day.
Wow, what a great poem. Absolutely no flaws at all! You must have some excellent skill because this poem is simply marvelous! Kudos to you my talented friend. I wish to read more of your work!
