Anyone Can Write a Poem

E - Everyone

In Poetry

You don't even have to rhyme

Just keep maintaining your time;

And write a long, fancy word.

Yes, it is somewhat absurd.

A charming format helps too,

But that's all you have to do.

And if you want it to be great!

Then, my friend, elaborate...

Hello there. KingQueenKnave here, an honest reviewer. I have come to look at this poem, which claims both that anyone can write a poem and that, most of all, its author can also write a poem. I agree partly with your message. Anyone can write a poem. Yet, not everyone can write a poem which is agreeable to my tastes.

I like the fact that the work is short, because the simplicity of the title is matched. The language, too, is simplistic and essentially an introduction for "anyone", I suppose. Dropping us into the middle of the action, you propose four steps across eight lines on how to write a basic poem- although, as I am going to elaborate, they are pretty vague.

First of all, you break the first rule. You claim that "you don't even have to rhyme", yet you start rhyming. Whilst you do "maintain time" at first with seven syllables per line, this turns into eight shortly after. There are no "long, fancy words". The format of your poem is not "majestic". I do appreciate that in order for it "to be great"- though on whose terms?- that one would "have to elaborate", indicating that you yourself know your poem to be introductory.

However, even as a piece of advice, the author doesn't follow his/her own. With this in mind, I cannot exactly say I would feel confident learning how to write poetry.

Thanks you have a point. I changed the syllables so they are all 7 now.

Hello, it's me!

Sorry for the short review, but i guess its is kind of a good thing because there was nothing to correct.

I loved this it was so funny ( I actually laughed so loud my mom gave me a look ). Your grammar is so perfect. One of my all time pet peeves is when people don't add punctuation. I also find this quite relatable because when it comes to poetry I'm quite a lost cause until I looked at some more formats that better suited the subjects I wanted to write about.

Overall this was a cute, funny, and quite realistic poem that has grammar that would satisfy any professor. I can't wait to read and review more of this. Especially since this piece of work was so beautifully written!

Goodbye, have a nice day!

I really loved this a lot! A couple months ago when I first joined YWS, I told everyone how I was never going to write poetry and that I was no good. That was until I tried it and not I'm hooked xD. You're grammar is very good and I'm very pleased with it. I wish I could be as helpful as Aley xD but I really see no way for this poem to improve, it's already amazing majestic in quality!

Kudos to you and your amazing poem
Alice

Thank you again. (:

Hey KeepWriting,

This was really cute. I actually laughed.

Unfortunately it's not about long and fancy words, it's about using poetic devices, and flow is one of them, so you do use a poetic device, however, you should mention something like metaphor too if you want to make this a really good example. Right now it's sort of like a grocery list with a twist.

All in all, poetry really is simple to write. You're totally right about that, and that you don't have to do much but keep time as you're writing. I think for you, you sort of miss your time when you're saying "Yes, I know it's somewhat absurd" because if you're doing commas for pauses, then your pause should be after 'I know' as well so that the syncopation gets back in track to match up with "fancy word" in the line above it. Also the line "A majestic format helps too" is somewhat stark compared to the line before it, so it doesn't really feel that majestic because of the difference, especially when that sentence has "really" in it which is a qualifier.

Overall, great job, it made me laugh and that's rare.
Keep Writing ^.-

This is awesome!!! My first thought was "write LOL" until I remembered that they don't like texting language on here. So anyways, I digress, this is funny, straight to the point, and is sort of cheeky/ makes a mockery of people who think that it's easy to write even though they haven't. I love it!! My only criticism is in line 7 when you say "unless! you want to be great" I personally think it should say "unless! you want IT to be great" (not actually in caps just wanted to show which word) because then you're saying the poem will be great and not the person themselves as it sounds like currently.
Good job!

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D
