maybe it was when
i turned my head.
you sneaked into my heart
and lit a match.
darling,
i was gasoline;
my heart was doused in it.
you will burn me alive.
my cries and pain and hurt
mean nothing to you.
i realize that,
but why do you dance in the embers?
as i feel myself
burn up into ashes,
you whisper that the crackling of fires
has always soothed you.
the heat of my fiery soul
warms your hands.
some people want to watch
the world - or my heart - burn.
though i was disillusioned by love,
never again will i rise.
for i am a phoenix, but
i have burned out.

Hai Screamingsloth,
I think that I basically came back to review your work because I'm familiar with you and your style. As I might have said before, your an extremely talented poet. When I look at this poem, and this poem especially, I can tell that you are very creative as well. A technique that people use while writing poems are when they purposefully lower case a letter. I can tell that the "I" is lower cased for a reason. This was so impressive! I wasn't expecting people to guess the "I" was not supposed to capitalized! When you put an "I" you're basically indicating that it is not important or smaller than everything else. I usually never really focus on the title of poems but this one was quite big. When I write poetry I usually keep the title as one phrase instead of a whole sentence. I guess that was just a preference. This was absolutely astonishing...Great Job!!! Using your creativity and technique is extremely impressive!! Your amazing so keep up with the great work!
I remember reviewing your work awhile ago!

This is Nikayla here dropping in for a review!

So I believe that I've reviewed at least a bit of poetry of yours before. I don't remember how I felt on it since it's probably been awhile, though I'm not here for the past. I'm here for the present poem, and I noticed that the title seems to be based off that quote from The Dark Knight, which is interesting since this fits the theme of the poem. The structure is based all in quatrains and while I'm fine with this since it's an aesthetic choice to make, this drags on a little long. I don't want to say that any particular stanzas are unnecessary though I wanted to note that most of these don't carry the weight of importance behind them.
Or, to be more specific, they don't carry the weight of needing to be in the poem since each stanza feels a little fragmented instead of whole. An exception to this is the first, since we're getting an insight to how this other person affected the speaker. At the same time, the wording here could've been stronger and I suggest changing 'sneaked' to 'snuck' with it making more sense and being more flowing that way. Another addition that I wanted to suggest is pulling the 'you' up from the third line to the second to make it turn into 'maybe it was when/i turned my head that you/snuck into my heart/and lit a match.' because flow and consistency are two of the main problems here.
I enjoyed the concept and the theme though I'm not sure if I completely enjoyed the overall execution of this since what's here is a little overdone. While I like reading poems that involve fire or use fire as a metaphor, it does end up getting a little stale to where I want to see it mixed up. Give us some stronger sensory details. That's not to say there aren't because words like 'crackling' and 'ashes' and 'embers' are all pretty splendid in word choice for this poem in particular to strengthen the weaker stanzas such as the second. Keep experimenting around with this one, though!
If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask! I hope I helped and have a great day.
Hi screamingsloth! Whatcha here for a review.
Wow! Super cool poem. Just a quick question - is 'i' supposed to be capitalized? Or did you mean to have it like that?
Also, in the first stanza, I think 'you snuck' might sound better than 'you sneaked', but that's totally up to you.
I'd be interested to know if this is about a broken heart, or something else? From personal experience or imagination?
I honestly don't think I have anything else to say! Great poem, and keep writing!

No, i meant to have it not capitalized. I just like it that way sometimes. My 6th grade English teacher told me it should be "sneaked instead of "snuck", but I never really checked from another place. And this is both from a personal experience and imagination. Thank you for the review!
Okay ... I figured you mean to have it like that. Probably your English teacher was right, but most people (myself included) don't really know the difference, and snuck sounds better, in my opinion. Cool! You're very welcome
