SITE THEMES: PRESENT
Image
written by Liminality< PM: >

YWS has had a lot of activity in the site theme department these past few months. You're likely to have noticed bright colours and changes to banners and decorations around the site. By 'theme' or 'site theme', I mean any visual element of the website that members 'share' as part of their YWS experience (which excludes personal profile visuals but includes things like site banners and the appearance of the People's Tab.) I've taken the liberty of cataloging some of the changes in our site's visuals in case you missed any of them! I've also tried to describe the visuals in some detail in case the images break or if you are reading this with a screen reader.

Valentine's Review Day

Image

In February, we had the beautiful Valentine's Review Day theme! Tastefully darker shades of pink backgrounded more eye-catching hot pinks and bubblegum pinks. There were also a lot of cool details that were changed. The bird banner on the People's Tab was given a new coat of paint, plus some heart decals on either side. Adorably, one of the birds in the centre is shown holding a heart-sealed envelope: perhaps a review for their best literary friend. The stars that we use to 'like' a post were replaced with pink hearts, and everyone sported a pink username for the weekend.

Image
Pictured above: @keystrings' wall post saying "Loving the pink theme :)". The 'like' button is a pink heart instead of a yellow star.

Lucky Review Challenge

Image

The week of St. Patrick's Day, the mod team ran a review challenge themed after all things lucky and green. As you can see in the screenshot, the site's tabs and navigation menu turned a lush green, and so did the bird banner on the People's Tab. Four-leafed clovers were also prominent, taking the place of the hearts from the Valentine's Day event and also featuring on the site banner.

April Fools' Day

We had many different site theme changes in April. First off, the annual April Fools' Day prank was a greyscale YWS.

Image

April Fools' Day often involves aesthetic changes to the site, along with prank threads and shenanigans. (I still remember the chaos of the yellow/bright blue fonts!) Fortunately for me, this year's April Fools' was a lot more calm and sedate, though I was still glad when the colour came back.

NaPo Banner

Image

Image

You may have already noticed this in the April Fools' one, but this year's NaPo site banner is one of a quill dipping into a jam jar and writing 'National Poetry Month' in a handwritten font. The background is creased white paper, and the words are framed on the right side by a pile of fruit.

@Spearmint on the People's Tab: i just noticed that the quill pen in the banner does a li'l "tap tap tap" in the jam jar to get jammy ink on it :0 that is so cute :333

2021 might have been the first year we had 'jam' as a theme for NaPo. Derived from the popular poetry jams, jam has had some role in the NaPo theming ever since. (NaPo themes themselves might be an interesting topic for future Squills columns!)

Easter

Image

Last but not least is the Easter theme! YWS showed up in a pale yellow background with a multi-coloured egg-print pattern. Unlike the other site themes I've covered, the body, tabs and top bar of the site appeared in different hues! The body was purple/magenta, the tabs were mint green and the top bar menu was sky blue.

On the People's Tab, the decorations for the bird banner were cheeky, with the signature cuteness. On the left, a bird holds a flower bouquet. The bird in the middle has just laid an Easter egg. A bird on the right is wearing white and pink bunny ears.

Colours and Birds

Looking at all the recent site themes inspired me to do some digging into how the YWS visuals have been modified in the past. The themes in this article all take advantage of colour and the bird banner to create fun, eye-catching designs. In the next article, I talk about some patterns and interesting tidbits I managed to find by delving into the screenshots of the past.

SITE THEMES: PAST
Image
written by Liminality< PM: >

The Valentine's Review Day theme really inspired me to take a look at what site visuals we've had over the years. It's amazing what you can find when you look at the sites' history. This article explores two common 'types' of site themes, as well as an interesting mystery I encountered while browsing old forum threads.

The Usual Suspects

For many years, YWS has regularly changed the site background for Halloween and for Christmas. The two screenshots below were sourced from the Wayback Machine.

Image

The Halloween site visuals involve bats in black over the usual YWS blue. The Young Writers Society logo in the top left corner acquires a pointy witch hat on the end of the word 'Writers'.The words 'The Young Writers Society' are also backgrounded by an eerie photorealistic full moon. All in all, it's the perfect treat for the Spooktober-inclined!

Image

For December to January, there's a snowflake pattern over the blue background. The logo has a Santa hat hanging off the word 'Writers'. Further down below, the banner next to the 'sign in' button shows Santa off to deliver presents. His sleigh is pulled by three winged reindeer, with stylised long necks and legs. (Interestingly, this banner also features a full moon in the backdrop.)

Compared to our recent site themes, these ones are more minimalistic and rely less on colour schemes. What makes them special is arguably that they're the same ones each year, marking their respective holidays and the passage of time. But what happens when people time-travel?

To learn more, I talked to @alliyah about her favourite site theme moments:

alliyah: My favorite Background Moment was in 2021 when after months of YWS having a snowflakes background through the summer because it just hadn't been changed, @Nate changed the background to the classic Halloween "Bats" background (in the middle of July!) to capitalize on the fun I went and liked a dozen bat works in the lit center, which then Nate also started liking, making people very confused, and then Bats got incorporated into the "Finding Nate the Dragon Tag-book" - sometime after this Nate gave Global Moderators the power to change the backgrounds ourselves to keep a bit more on top of the holidays, but I still love thinking back to all the mayhem that came from the snow / bats one.

You can see the screenshots from this story here!

Site Banners

If you've been on the site for a while, you'll probably know that the mod team often designs new banners for big events, even if they happen annually. One notable kind of site banner is the type that measures the site's progress towards a goal.

Image

@Spearmint and I helped design this progressing Review Bar for Review Month in 2022. The background is plain white and in the centre is a video-game style progression bar, with the text 'Level Complete!' on top. The bar is fully coloured-in, with a gradient from red to yellow, green and blue. Our idea was for us to start with a small goal and then progress through the 'Levels' as Review Month went on. I saved a screenshot of when we went over the Level 1 goal with 459 reviews.

The idea of a review bar came back in the middle of 2023 with the quest to find the Golden Goose! The Search for the Golden Goose was a novel, summer-long event revolving around clearing the Green Room.

Image

In the screenshot, you can see that site banner has a thin white field at the top that says 'Green Room Reviews Remaining until we find the GOOSE!'. Next to that is a golden goose saying 'HONK!' in all caps. The progress bar is dark green with lighter green cells. As the cells fill up with gold, they display a single goose feather in the centre. Over the summer, the bar slowly filled up as the Green Room was emptied, until we successfully found the Golden Goose. You can read more about that adventure here.

The Mysterious Train . . .

For the most part, we've looked at the visuals on YWS's header — but what about the footer? @niteowl shared these images of a train on YWS Screencaps, pointing out synchronicities between the Quote Generator and the train.

Image

The train depicted is an old-fashioned steam train with simple unshaded colours. Each train car is differently styled as carrying passengers, lumber, coal or other kinds of cargo. A plume of steam rises from the front of the train. The quote in niteowl's screencapture is from the Simpsons: "I wanna shake off the dust of this one-horse town. I wanna explore the world. I wanna watch TV in a different time zone. I wanna visit strange, exotic malls. I'm sick of eating hoagies. I want a grinder, a sub, a foot-long hero. I want to live, Marge. Won't you let me live?".

You can see more of niteowl's train commentary in the screencaps thread here.

As far as I understand, it seems the train could've been part of an April Fool's prank by Nate. niteowl kindly showed me Nate's wall post made around that time which gives a 'clear the Green Room' speech themed after the Communist Revolution. I looked up what trains might have to do with the Communist Revolution and found this article on Trotsky's train, which could have been what the prank was referencing. Ultimately, this site footer might have been one of the many ways people have been encouraging reviewing on YWS.

To be continued?

As of now, I have yet to cover many more interesting moments, like the time YWS was taken over by green vegetables. Do you have any favourite site theme memories? Do you have a proposal for future site themes? Let me know on my wall, and share your stories with other YWSers :D

SOME NAPO HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2026
Image

written by alliyah < PM: >

Image

This year's NaPoWriMo has come to a close and what a month of poetry it has been! This year the poetry crew settled on a decidedly jar themed NaPo and with @Wolfi's wonderfully jammy site-banner it was a sweet month indeed.

This year we celebrated old favorites and new challenges and came together as a community to enjoy poetry together. From the start poetry jams have been a real staple and encouragement of each week this April. @Quillfeather started us off strong, then @cocteau, @soundofmind, @fatherfig, @LadyMysterio, @canopy and @thehoplessromantic were also regular Poetry Jam hosts for us.

This year 20 individuals participated in April Madness (with Quill hosting, and @Meshugenah, cocteau, @keystrings, and myself joining as judges). As a few users noted the competition was fierce with several users who had won previous years competing! Ultimately @Silvern and @Hannah were the finalists with Silvern claiming the gold with their poem last rites for roadkill.

We introduced a few challenges to get people chatting together and working together! Cocteau hosted an Exquisite Corpse Poetry Challenge where users worked together providing lines for collaborative poems! The results are yet to be revealed, but this was such a fun challenge as a partitipant and I can't wait to see what we came up with together! Then I hosted a Poetry Recipe Box Challenge to encourage users to work together by providing their friends poetry prompts to use! @Spearmint, @Liminality, @Hkumar, @AlexWrites, and @cocteau were all participants in the challenge! And their results were great.

This year I have to say there was really a collaborative and community feeling during the month. There were many people not only taking the time to like poems within the NaPo forum, but taking the opportunity to give each other shout-outs or jump into threads to share their thoughts and encouragements along the way. There were 70 threads made this year for NaPo (actually 9 more threads than 2025!) and we had 67 participants and I am guessing around 1000 poems (though that is still be added up by poetry crew!).

I have to say even if you didn't quite make your NaPo goal, thank you for participating along with us in community this month and being part of the journey together. As an encouragement for those who feel like they have a little more poetry in them, but didn't quite hit their goals... admitedly the last two years I did not actually finish my threads until June - if you have more poetry in you and aren't quite happy with the results, nothing is going to stop you from continuing to write, so keep writing! This is your project afterall!

Congratulations to every person who participated by poeting or commenting or encouraging, well done to everyone who pushed themselves, and amazing work to everyone who achieved their goals or even surpassed them. I'm proud of you! You did it poet!

FEATURED MEMBER INTERVIEW: CREEPERFEVERDREAMS
Image
written by Liminality< PM: >

You will recognise this FM for her ever-extending web of spooky stories, poems and characters. She became FM once before in 2022, and in 2025 she became our October-to-November FM (fitting, as this covered Halloween). That's right, I'm talking about @creeperfeverdreams! Read on for her thoughts on horror, Creepypasta and her recent writing.

Squills: Heya! Lim here, reporting for Squills - the YWS newsletter! We do a column where we interview Featured Members like yourself. Would it be okay if I asked you a few questions?

creeperfeverdreams: yes ofc! ^v^

S: Awesome! What was your reaction when you first found out you were FM?

C: Well I was pleasantly surprised that I got featured member again. I didn’t expect it, but it’s nice to see my user on FM board. ^v^

S: For sure! As mentioned in your FM thread, you're well-known for your spooky stories. Could you tell us about what got you into horror and what you like most about this genre? c:

C: That’s a funny question. You see, I actually used to hate horror. I was TERRIFIED of it. But I did like Tim Burton stuff (I used to have the biggest Nightmare Before Christmas obsession back in 2020). I felt like horror wasn’t really something to make you feel for all the characters, that it was just something people used to scare others and it made me upset. :/

But then, when I wax looking up Nightmare Before Christmas photos of Jack and Sally, I also found photos of two very DIFFERENT Jack and Sally characters. They were Laughing Jack and Sally Dawn, Creepypasta characters. Me knowing very little about them, I decided to look them up some more and then, I realized that I could make my own type of horror that was still scary, but also had feeling to it. Like maybe the characters aren’t the best but they still feel, yknow?

S: I see - that's really interesting! What do you think a story needs to be a good creepypasta?

C: Hmm…Creepypasta is internet horror, so it doesn’t have to be a written story. It can be a picture or a video, but to be a GOOD Creepypasta, I think that there should be some element of realism-not too realistic, remember that there still has to be something weird/off-putting in it-and characters that have some kind of a mental/relationship/school problem to deal with, because when you’re making a Creepypasta, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, it hits a lot harder when a character has a real life situation where they feel hopeless and then have them be haunted/tormented by the supernatural, something that they can barely understand. Maybe they’ll fight it and win. Maybe they will lose. Maybe they will become a monster themselves, the very thing that they feared becoming. But there’s always going to be something lurking in the shadows of a Creepypasta story.

A character may want something desperately in a Creepypasta story, like a better life, but they seldom ever get it. Or they think they have a better life when in reality, they lost everything.

That is what I think a Creepypasta story needs to be good, BUT PLEASE DO NOT STRESS ABOUT MAKING A CREEPYPASTA!!! If Jeff the Killer can become super popular, then your Creepypasta can become popular too!

There is a Creepypasta website but I wouldn’t recommend sending anything there because they have a very long list of guidelines that I feel discourage younger writers from sending anything to them. You can literally just post your Creepypasta wherever and it would still be a Creepypasta because it would be on the internet and it’s horror.

S: Those are some good points! I like the idea that Creepypasta stories need to have some grounding element to them even if they are full of the supernatural.

Let's talk about your writing - which of your recent stories are your favourites right now?

C: Oh my goodness! How am I going to choose? Well, my favorite series I’m writing right now is “Heaven and Hell is pretty cringe, actually”. It’s about this sixteen year old girl named Stella and her twin sister, who get sent to Hell for murdering each other. (We’re off to a great start haha.) Except they killed each other over a fight, because Adele was in love with Stella’s girlfriend, Amanda, and obsessively killed her over it. Stella didn’t like that. So yeah, they’re both in Hell. But Amanda is in Heaven. They both have to escape Hell, all while there’s some demon possessing dead people out in the real world.

There’s a whole lot more I want to explain about the series, but that is the basic plot of it. I like this because it weaves in love-romantic love and familial love-and shows how wonderfully absurd it is. People will say that they love someone all the time, but what if the stakes were high and things got weird? Would they still stick around then?

Humor is in the series too, because you gotta laugh about these things, right? It’s all stuff to laugh about, anyway.

I know I have a lot of stories right now but there are STILL more things I want to share!

S: That sounds like an interesting premise, and I can see dark humour being a part of that too. What sorts of stories would you like to try writing in the future?

C: Huh…hmm…well…I think I’d like to try writing more surreal/dreamlike stories because I really like dreamcore/weirdcore/nostalgiacore, you know, all of that stuff and I sometimes try to put it in my writing. I don’t know how good I’ve gotten with putting that stuff in, but I want to get better at putting it in my stories.

I’d also like to be more intense/serious with my writings, because I feel like I can get the whimsy down well, I just need to make more off-putting and uncanny stuff.

S: That sounds exciting! I really enjoy reading surreal stories myself. Finally, what advice do you have for your fellow YWSers?

C: I agree, it is hexciting!

Advice? Well, everybody writes differently. I know there are some people out there (myself included) who sometimes think that they have to write like somebody else well known or want to be like somebody else known. My advice is to write what is in your head and write in your voice, authentically. Because yes, you will need to edit and maybe change some things, but don’t change EVERYTHING to the point where it’s not even your story. Trust yourself. You’ve got good ideas. I believe that any piece artwork holds a bit of the artist. That’s what makes the art so charming.

Please don’t use AI. :/ I know it may be tempting but like…there’s more soul to your work when you do it, even when it’s not perfect.

Oh and before I go, Lim, do you remember the FM interview you had with me back in like…2022, I think, where I said I was working on a series about Halloween monsters? Well I made a bit of the series last October! It’s called “Some kind of monster land” in case anyone wants to check that out!

S: That is some fantastic advice! Often the voice of the writer is what draws people to a specific work of art. People make art for people, after all.

And yes, we did talk about that! That's really cool, I'm sure it'll be a fascinating read

Thanks so much for doing this interview and congrats once again on becoming FM (twice!)

C: You’re welcome! It was a spooktacular pleasure to do this interview! ^v^

If you have yet to do so, join us in congratulating creeperfeverdreams on her FM thread or on her wall!

UNCLASSIFIED INTERVIEWS CLASSIFIED AND IT GOES HOW YOU MIGHT EXPECT IT TO
Image

written by alliyah < PM: >

So I sat down with @thehoplessromantic to ask her about her recent involvement or lack of involvement or secret involvement... with "classified" as a self-avowed unclassified supporter. As you might have seen recently there's been a LOT of classified shennanigans going on around the site, so I was hoping to get some insights. The interview went exactly how you would expect it to! Enjoy!

alliyah: So hop, when did you first notice the bugs?

thehoplessromantic: I probably shouldn't be telling you this but the bugs told me they've always been here... I can't say anything else because i don't want to end up like can they politely asked me not to, but yeah!

a: In your opinion, in what way will classified likely use the bugs to destroy YWS?

h: oooo, I don't know >.> Sorry, but I still think this is all your doing, not classified's XP

a: Do you know what is going on with canopy and the bugs?

h: The bugs kidnapped her and are watching for their next victim RUN BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE have nothing to do with her absence, lol! She is just really busy totally not in danger but hopefully she will have more free time!

a: To the best of your knowledge, what do you believe the bugs are doing?

h: Unfortunately, I have no clue :( i'm not typing this with free will THEY'RE WATCHING ME

a: Have you seen anything suspicious in addition to the bugs that you'd like to note?

h: More and more people have bug profiles and I remember someone having a bug in their about page...

a: What else can you tell us about classified vs unclassified?

h: I feel like both sides have fallen victim to the bugs...

Well folks there you have it! All of the extensive information I could gather on this very controversial subject. To join Team Unclassified in our fight against Classified, join us at our club Team Unclassified .

FEATURED MEMBER INTERVIEW: KITTYCURSED
Image
written by canopy < PM: >

You will recognise this FM for their love for cats, psychological horror, sci-fi and their exquisitely written chapters from "Cats of the Colony" and "We're All in Purgatory". That's right, I'm talking about @kittycursed! They were featured member from 10th January to 24th January, let's hear from them!

Squills: Hello there! canopy here, reporting for Squills - the YWS newsletter! We do a column where we interview Featured Members like yourself. Would it be okay if I asked you a few questions?

kittycursed: yeah of course! I'd be happy to answer some questions!

S: Awesome! You just joined in September 2025, how did you stumble upon YWS, and what has made you stick around?

k: I joined YWS after hearing about it from a google search because I wanted somewhere to post my writings to get feedback before possibly publishing them. what's really made me stick around is the active, welcoming community!

S: That's so great to hear! My favourite aspect of YWS is also the community :3. I also noticed you've invited some of your friends over to the site as well, how did you manage to convince them to join? Was it anything specific about YWS that convinced them?

k: One friend also wanted to post their stories, and asked me to recommend a place, while another wanted to post his poetry, and got the idea after a conversation about some of my YWS activities.

S: I see - that's really cool! How did it feel to discover that you were the Featured Member / what was your reaction?

k: I was very happy to learn I was a featured member! My friends, ArchieArts and XxmattsheartxX informed and congratulated me, and I am very grateful for that as well as all of the positive messages from other members of the site.

S: Glad to hear that! :) You've been part of the site for a while now, do you have any sections or events you most enjoy?

k: I most enjoy reading new stories in the green room, as well as writing my own in the publishing center!

S: That does sum up YWS really well! Reading amazing works and getting great reviews! Let's talk about your writing, your literary pieces span from poetry and short stories to novels, and you seem to have a particular affinity for cats and horror themed works, have you seen any change in the way you write since you joined YWS?

k: Yes, I've noticed that I write much better. Faster, with better grammar, and better describing! I've gained a lot from all the practice and reviews!

S: That sounds amazing! I'm really happy to hear that YWS has helped your writing :D Finally, do you have any shoutouts you'd like to end with?

k: Yes, my two best friends @ArchieArts and @XxmattsheartxX!

S: Thanks so much for doing this interview and congrats once again on becoming FM!

POETRY READERS IS BACK: WHAT'S THE DEAL?
Image

written by cocteau < PM: >

Poetry Readers has been such a staple of YWSian poetry culture, so it's about time someone revived it, right?

If you are unfamiliar with Poetry Readers, to sum it up: once a month or so, we get together on a WriterFeedPad to discuss either a selected YWSer's poem or a famous one. There are a few questions to discuss about the poem, especially to discuss different devices the poet has used - why that choice of diction, what kind of tone do you think the poet wanted to convey, and so on? If you like literary discussions, or reviewing poetry, or even casually reading poems whenever you come across one, Poetry Readers may be for you!

This month, we're doing something a little different to celebrate its revival! Poetry Readers is inviting YOU to bring a poem of your choice for discussion, whether it be your own or a famous one you found online! You can optionally create your own "prompts" or questions for consideration, as well. Please be sure to ask for permission if you wish to bring another YWSers poem, or keep track of links and poet names if you bring a poem you've read elsewhere!

Be sure to swing by the Poetry Readers club for more information concerning these discussions, or maybe just to check out some cool poetry.
