Children with Stars in their Veins (Chapter 7)

a/n: hey, thanks for checking out Starry Veins! This is the novel I wrote for Round V of LMS, and it's still a first draft! While I don't discourage any feedback, I prefer not to receive feedback on grammar! I'm not polishing this draft up yet, so I'm not as concerned about editing. I am, of course, open to all feedback, but I ask that you keep this in consideration! Thanks <3

[Isadora]

The sky had been an endless expanse of grey all morning, the sun hidden behind a stretch of clouds that blended in with the sombre monochrome around it. The wind was biting and fast, throwing everything around and ruining what little composure everything had before exposing itself to the harsh outdoors.

Isadora pulled her jacket tighter around her, as if that would help stave off the wind at all. The woollen collar of the wrapped coat tickled her neck and jawline. The stray pieces of her hair not collected back blew across her face and she must have already tucked them back dozens of times by now.

Warm hands grabbed her own and she met the gaze of her father, whose brows were curled in worry. She didn’t blame him.

“Will you be warm enough?” he asked. He held up her bare hands, paler than usual. Almost an ash colour. “Your hands will freeze. Here.” He let go of her hands to remove his gloves and carefully replaced them on her.

“It won’t be cold much longer, it’s already starting to warm,” she pointed out, but didn’t protest. She offered him her best smile, chest tight. “I’ll be good, Dad. I’ve got everything I need, you know I do.”

He smiled and let out a breath, nodding. “Yes, yes. I know. I’m just worried, you know.” He placed his hands gently onto her cheeks and bent down to kiss the crown of her head. She closed her eyes and tried to soak it in. She wouldn’t have this again for a while. “I love you, Isa.”

“I love you too,” she murmured, and gently extracted herself from his grip. She turned to her mum beside him, who wore a watery smile. Her pale grey eyes were glistening, but she wasn’t crying. Isadora wrapped her arms around her mum’s neck and felt arms around her waist in return.

“Take care of yourself, you hear?” Mum whispered in her ear. When she pulled away, her mum tucked a wayward strand of blonde hair back behind her ear. “And Mishal. He’ll need you.”

She smiled and nodded. “Of course. I love you.” And then, reluctantly, she pulled herself from her parents’ clutches.

The Citadel loomed above them, the dark grey stone and rich wood dull in the grey light. The beautiful ivory staircase leading to the grand, hickory wooden doors was the only thing that held any lustre.

Leaning against one of the stone columns at the base of the stairs, Ashael waved her over. He looked small, wearing a coat too big for him. Still, he stood up when she approached with a bright grin on his face that warmed her.

“I have something for you,” he said, sans greeting. He pulled out a book-shaped object wrapped in leather from the satchel at his waist. She held out her newly gloved hands as he offered it to her, and he pressed it into them. “I hope you’ll find use for it.”

She eyed him, unable to help the smile that spread over her lips. “You didn’t have to get me anything,” she said. He shrugged, biting his lip and grinning, as she began to unwrap it.

It was a beautiful, albeit heavy tome, covered in supple red leather that was smooth to the touch. It had copper inlay, swirling around the edges in lovely curves. It would glint, she was sure, under the right light. The title, in the same copper, read The Book of Everything, Vol. 1.

“It has just about anything you could think about in it, little facts and tidbits, enough to give you flavour on, well. Everything.” Ashael was bouncing back and forth on the balls of his feet. “You can find myths and legends, properties of different plants, the basics of writing codes in tapestries. Did you know that you can hurt a demon with a dagger forged with trueblood?”

She laughed. “Excuse me?”

“It doesn’t even give backstory. How’d anyone know to try?” He chuckled and ducked his head. “Because blood has iron, you can separate it— well, I’m not entirely sure, you’d probably need a really powerful mage to separate those kinds of minute particles—”

She leaned forward and placed a soft kiss to the corner of his mouth. Ashael stilled for a moment, and then rested a hand on her neck and kissed her back. It was sweet and she pulled away after only a moment to rest her forehead against him, breathing in time with him.

“Ash.” She lifted a hand to his face and brushed her thumb over his cheekbone. “I love your rambling, but I’ve got to say goodbye to the others too.” She pulled away and he looked a little dazed, his smile dimming. His eyes already pooling with tears. She continued rubbing her thumb along his cheek and did her best to smile. “I don’t think I’m going to run into any demons either.”

It made him laugh, at least, even though a tear slipped out of his eye. “Yeah, uh huh. I know, I just…” He sighed and nodded. “I’m really going to miss you, you know? I wish I could come with you.”

She patted his face and shook her head. “You have to finish your apprenticeship.”

He leaned into her palm. “I’ll wait for you. You know that right?”

Pressure began to build at the back of her eyes, and she blinked quickly, leaning forward to steal another quick, chaste kiss. She couldn’t start crying yet, she hadn’t even gone to the others yet. Alanna and the others needed her to be strong, or she didn’t think she’d be able to leave.

“Don’t spend all your time in the library,” she reminded him. “And make sure you take care of yourself.”

Ashael placed a hand under his chin and blinked, shying away coyly as if to say, who, me? It looked stupid with tears running down his face, but she laughed anyway. “I wouldn’t dream of defying Her Highness’ request.”

She shook her head again before taking a step back. She pressed a kiss to the tips of her fingers and held it up in the air as she backed away. Ashael did the same, eyes already red, but he was smiling.

The rest of them were huddled on the opposite side of the staircase, except for Mishal who was still speaking to his own mother away from everyone else. The rest of the expedition and Margaretta were finishing the preparations for their caravan, making sure the horses were ready and that both their carriages were in working order without rust or dents.

Cassius, Ember, and Alanna were all sitting on the steps, while Rowan stood behind them with folded arms. They looked grim, staring out into the distance with their hair in a loose braid, wearing a cloak that billowed out around their legs in the wind. Ember’s face was in her hands, and she stared at the ground with an empty expression, eyes hollow. A black bandana held back her hair and saved it, mostly, from the wind.

Alanna was already crying in her place between Cassius and Ember. Her hair was up, curled into a bun, and she wore her warm trousers and a grey sweater, arms tight to her chest. Cassius’ hair was an absolute disaster and looked duller, darker than normal. He donned his fur-lined jacket, which he was trying to recede into. He wasn’t crying but looked about to start at any given moment.

When Alanna noticed her approaching, she leapt from the stairs and crossed the space in seconds. She barely caught Alanna as her sister barrelled into her legs, still small and baby cheeked. Alanna’s arms gripped her in a death hold, and she sobbed into Isadora’s hip.

“You can’t go! You— you can’t leave me behind!” Alanna’s voice was muffled, but her words were clear.

Her heart split and she had to close her eyes and inhale deeply to keep from breaking apart right then and there. When she opened her eyes, she saw the rest of them had moved closer. Cassius was watching her with dull, grey-ish eyes that were darker than she remembered. He looked older, more serious, and it hurt her to see that kind of weight on him.

She carefully pushed Alanna away and then crouched down in front of her. Sobs rolled out of her sister so badly that she seemed to have trouble breathing.

“Little Pika,” she said quietly, trying to keep her voice level. Alanna brought her hands to her face and Isadora caught them before she could hide away. “Hey, hey now. Look at me. You’re going to be ok. You have Oriole, and Rascal, and Ember, ok? They’ll help you, they’ll be here with you.” She bit the inside of her cheek and ran her hand over Alanna’s hair. “I’ll be gone for just a little while, and then I’ll be back, and it will be like I never left.”

“I want you,” Alanna whispered, but her breathing was beginning to even out. “I want you and Stormy.”

She continued to stroke Alanna’s hair, and her sister’s sobs began to slow. “I know. But you’re very strong, and brave. This isn’t forever, just for a little while, and then I’ll come back and we’ll be together again, all right?” She looked back at the others. “All of us.”

And then she let go of Alanna and stood up. She approached the others and offered each of them a tight embrace and a kiss on their foreheads. Cassius shivered at her touch and wouldn’t meet her eye.

Mishal finally came over then, his gait awkward, and avoided everyone’s gaze. He shoved his hands into his jacket.

“Mish,” Cassius muttered under his breath, eyeing Mishal darkly.

In response, Mishal scowled. But it did get him to look at Cassius. “Cassius. You’ll get into unspeakable trouble, no doubt.”

Cassius shrugged and attempted to look nonchalant, even though he still looked on the verge of tears. “You’ll be insufferably boring, no doubt.”

Mishal rolled his eyes, but there was a miniscule twitch at the corner of his mouth.

Rowan stepped forward and pulled Mishal into a tight hug, resting their chin on his shoulder and shutting their eyes. “Be careful.” They glanced over to Isadora. “Both of you. Take care of each other.”

As they pulled away, Mishal nodded and looked uncomfortable again, glancing down at the ground. As Rowan stepped away, Ember approached. Mishal was the one to pull her into a hug, even though she barely reached his torso, and he let out a long breath.

She had to glance away from a moment. Reality had begun to set in, had begun to actually set in. They were leaving, they weren’t going to be here tomorrow. They’d be separated. They had never been separated before.

When she turned back, Alanna was stepping away from Mishal, and he was beginning to look wrecked. As Alanna stepped back towards the others, Cassius reached a hand out to place on her shoulder, making no moves to approach Mishal for his own goodbye, which wasn’t all that surprising.

But then, all the work she had done with Alanna immediately unravelled like loose threads. Alanna began to shudder as sobs ran through her again, and she turned to hit Cassius on the chest weakly.

“You can’t— you can’t let her go! She’s as good as your— your sister, you can’t— can’t let her go! You can’t—!” Alanna hit him again, even weaker this time, and then crumpled.

Cassius caught her, but not without a look of surprise and a backwards stagger to steady the both of them. He pulled her into his arms as Alanna completely broke down, anything she said now completely incomprehensible.

“We’ll take care of them,” Ember said softly, tears staining her cheeks. She looked determined though, not crumbling like the others. She met Isadora’s gaze and nodded.

“Isadora, Mishal! We’re ready to leave!” Margaretta called. “Mount up, and we’ll head out!”

“I love you all,” she told them, her breath fogging the air and coming out faster than was natural. She could hardly do it, keep herself together and remember how to breathe. “Be safe.”

“You too,” Rowan said, eyes glistening.

As they approached the caravan and were guided over to their two lovely mounts, the bells began to ring out through the Citadel, filling the air with a graceful, almost sorrowful song that resonated in her chest. She loved the sound of the bells, the lull of their ringing and the peace it brought her.

Now, as she pulled herself up onto her palomino, the dam broke and she began to cry. She didn’t want to leave them, didn’t want to leave her parents or Ashael. It was too late now.

A hand stuck out beside her and she glanced over to find Mishal watching her, face drawn. He looked as ill as she felt, but he held out his head steadfast and was only shaking a little when she took it.

Scribs!

I am going to try to use your novel for my last three Checklists (Chapters 10, 15, and 20) so expect a BUNCH of reviews from me soon if I can SUCCEED. Let's go.

Cassius was watching her with dull, grey-ish eyes that were darker than she remembered.

You already described Cassius as being dull and darker than usual so it feels a bit repetitive to have this description of him again?

Reality had begun to set in, had begun to actually set in.

This also feels repetitive. I can't put my finger on exactly why I dislike this line, but it's not doing it for me lol.

but he held out his head steadfast

We love steadfast heads xD

~ ~ ~

Wow, way to punch us all right in the FEELS, scribs. I will say I'm confused about Alanna's age. I assumed she was young, maybe like 8 or 9, but then the interaction with Isadora above:

She barely caught Alanna as her sister barrelled into her legs, still small and baby cheeked.

Makes her seem like a toddler? So I was like oh okay wow I massively overestimated her age, I probably just imagined her wrong. She is a Very Young little sister.

And then

and she turned to hit Cassius on the chest weakly.

This makes her seem like she's like 8-9 again to be tall enough to reach his chest? Idk, I'm just a bit confused about her characterization, but it is entirely possible my own bad memory just not remembering what you intended.

But overall a nice, heart breaking chapter! And! I'm excited! To see them gone now! Palace was cool and all but ROAD TRIP LET'S GO

Hey hey! <3

so I saw your note about grammar, and I have been giving those little corrections, so I apologize if that isn't what you wanted! I hope that's okay, but I'll make sure not to give any more unless it's confusing to read or something! I don't think stuff like sentence length and structure counts as grammar, or like nitpicky grammar, so I might include that, if that's okay.

Ooh, so we're going back to Isadora's perspective! c: It's been awhile since I read her last one, so I've forgotten a bit what she's like xD This should be fun!

The sky had been an endless expanse of grey all morning, the sun hidden behind a stretch of clouds that blended in with the sombre monochrome around it

Ooh I love your opening! It paints such a clear image in my mind

“Will you be warm enough?” he asked.

AW I love this sentence. So much worry conveyed in a small sentence

She closed her eyes and tried to soak it in. She wouldn’t have this again for a while. “I love you, Isa.”

Okay so I'm glad we are finally getting to go on the adventure, but aww, this farewell is pretty sad and touching </3

Did you know that you can hurt a demon with a dagger forged with trueblood?

Ooh I'll keep that in mind in case I ever meet a demon

She pulled away and he looked a little dazed, his smile dimming. His eyes already pooling with tears.

I think it would be cool if you could combine these sentences instead of having the latter by itself (it technically isn't a sentence by itself anyway).

I have to agree with alliyah that there are quite a bit of hard descriptions xD I wanted to read other reviews to make sure it wasn't just me. But you do an amazing job with descriptions!!! And the farewells were ;(

She barely caught Alanna as her sister barrelled into her legs, still small and baby cheeked.

WAIT Alanna is her sister? Omg how did I not know/remember that, I feel dumb xD

“You can’t go! You— you can’t leave me behind!”

This isn’t forever, just for a little while, and then I’ll come back and we’ll be together again, all right? All of us.”

THAT BETTER BE THE CASE why do I have a feeling it won't

Okay so this chapter was so sad ahh </3 You are amazing at describing emotions! Like I could literally picture this in my mind as a movie with slow mo scenes and sorrowful music playing in the background. The goodbyes were so perfectly written; you're an amazing emotional writer! I'm glad I got to read this side of your writing. This was all so perfect and sad and amazingg!!

Overall, this was another lovely chapter! I'm excited to finally see the journey finally begin, and I hope this helped! :D

no, it's totally fine! I do really appreciate your reviews, I honestly should have specified a long time ago! I was just looking at the KB and was reminded that I should put in a note about it! It's really just that, since I'm not polishing this draft off for anything, grammar nitpicks are fine but they don't really help much? I can't do much with them right now!
And yes, absolutely point out sentence length/structure/what sounds odd! That is helpful in the very least that I know what to avoid in the future!

ahh thank you so much though!! your reviews are so sweet and helpful <3

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever it is in your part of the world)

Four more reviews planned for the day.

First Impression: Nice little goodbye scene. The emotions are definitely felt there. All of your relationship building paid of nicely there.

Isadora pulled her jacket tighter around her, as if that would help stave off the wind at all. The woollen collar of the wrapped coat tickled her neck and jawline. The stray pieces of her hair not collected back blew across her face and she must have already tucked them back dozens of times by now.

Nice little description.

This is a really touching farewell. It's the first time we get to see the way the parents are reacting and this is showing that they also care a lot. Also do they have any idea on what is going on behind the scenes?

The Citadel loomed above them, the dark grey stone and rich wood dull in the grey light. The beautiful ivory staircase leading to the grand, hickory wooden doors was the only thing that held any lustre.

This is a lovely description. Very nice for our first look at the citadel.

“It doesn’t even give backstory. How’d anyone know to try?” He chuckled and ducked his head. “Because blood has iron, you can separate it— well, I’m not entirely sure, you’d probably need a really powerful mage to separate those kinds of minute particles—”

This is so ironic it is really funny. Also I have a feeling this was a hint. Was it?

Again great showing of the different reactions from the different characters. Their personalities are perfectly reflected here.

I love the relationship between the two of them. I have a feeling it is going to get really interesting as time goes on.

“Isadora, Mishal! We’re ready to leave!” Margaretta called. “Mount up, and we’ll head out!”

This character seems to be pretty cold and calculating. I wonder what her plan is.

Overall: This was a really well written and very touching scene. Now I hope we get some excitement after this.

I don't think I had anything to point out in this chapter. It was really well written and I just ended up praising it. Oh well. Three more to go.

Hey Mell! <3 Not sure if you remember but I owe you two reviews from my RevMo Checklist Challenge Contest - I am just now getting to those! Sorry for the delay, thank you for your patience! I thought I'd tackle a few pieces of yours that are in the GR.

So, first, you have a very poetic-prose style, especially for describing scenery. The opener of this chapter was just perfect!

The sky had been an endless expanse of grey all morning, the sun hidden behind a stretch of clouds that blended in with the sombre monochrome around it. The wind was biting and fast, throwing everything around and ruining what little composure everything had before exposing itself to the harsh outdoors.

I'll mostly just be giving overall reactions, since I don't know the story up to here - but hopefully that's helpful in some way!

I got a little distracted by the hair descriptions, mainly because there were so many of them, and I was trying to decipher if they were symbolic to the character's personality's - the narrator seems extremely conscious of hair - more so than any other physical factor. If the descriptions were symbolic to their character I think it's okay, if not, I might not describe it so often.

The goodbyes with the parents are so perfect - you really capture the emotional intensity of the moment without anything seeming fake or melo-dramatic. Giving the gloves to Isadora seemed like such a caring sweet gesture too on dad's part.

Great portrayal of character in the dialogue with Ashael - I think it can be tough to portray rambling, but you did it in a smart, easily understood way.

Right here, "Her heart split and she had to close her eyes and inhale deeply to keep from breaking apart right then and there. " - I think I wouldn't put "heart split" because whether in prose or poetry, the image has a tough time conveying real emotion since it's so overused. I think just starting with "she had to close her eyes and inhale deeply to keep from breaking apart.." would work better and stay in the moment.

I like how the scene zooms out of the close character interactions back into the landscape - to give the readers a bit of an emotional break, but also to draw a sort of summary of the chapter's emotional content - but I think the line about "peace" with the bells is a little mis-matched by Isadora's own emotional reaction which seems very un-peaceful. Maybe you were trying to draw a contrast there- but I'd include a line saying that she didn't feel that peace now, or something.

Overall, it was a good read - your writing is very polished and I didn't get hung up on any grammatical phrasing issues at all. It moved right along, and you were able to capture a little bit of different character interactions in each goodbye while not making it feel repetitive.

Nice job! :)

- alliyah

hey alliyah! happy review day :D

I got a little distracted by the hair descriptions, mainly because there were so many of them,

I genuinely did not realise how many hair descriptions there were. I didn't want to describe the appearance of once character and neglect the others, but there are a lot of characters and looking back,,, I did go overboard aha.

but I think the line about "peace" with the bells is a little mis-matched by Isadora's own emotional reaction which seems very un-peaceful. Maybe you were trying to draw a contrast there- but I'd include a line saying that she didn't feel that peace now, or something.

I just messed up the wording! it is supposed to be "she didn't feel at peace now", but I realise the wording is too vague for that right now.

I'm really glad you like my style because I looove writing descriptions like these <3

thank you for your reviews!! they're very appreciated :D

i am loving this story so far. but i wonder if you could explain Rowan, she seems to think of herself as more than one person in one body. other than that i love it. tag me whon you come out with the next chapter please.

I'm glad to hear you like it!

Rowan is actually non-binary! They use they/them pronouns, as opposed to he/him or she/her. It's not that they think of themselves as more than one person, it's just they use different pronouns :)

Will do! Thank you for reading!

MELL. I am trying SO HARD not to cry but MY GOD IS IT HARD.

HNNNNNG the setting is so SAD and the characters are all SAD and it's all just SO SAD.

Even knowing there are walking carriaGES I am STILL JUST -- well actually, I'm kinda hyped about that idea bUT I'M STILL SAD.

I love that you address just about every important person in Isadora's life. And the fact that you led us through most of these relationships so well made this so heartbreaking to read. You took the time to introduce everyone for this very moment and the impact it could potentially have on the reader and i aM CHOKING BACK TEARS, MELL.

MRAAAAAAAAAAAH WHERE DO I *START*

Okay, so we start out with her father and mother, which is appropriate for a couple reasons. One, of course, because they're her parents, so I mean. yeah. BUT we also started out this novel with her parents?! (Mostly anyway. *pats Cassius*) And I know they weren't super active during that meeting or anything, but I think it lines up well enough. And I just looked, and her father kissed the top of her head then and now, which is AWESOME consistency.

Same with her mother being more task-oriented or authoritative of the two. At the meeting, her mother was interested in nailing down the dates for their trip rather than getting emotional about the idea of Isadora leaving, and here, her mother is still keeping a straight head (as best she can) and telling Isadora to take care of Mishal as well. You have a great dynamic with these parents, and I'm super happy to see the consistency in their characters considering how little they've appeard in the novel so far.

In future drafts, I imagine we might see a liiittle more of her parents so that this good-bye a little more emotional, but it's also good that we started out with them so the strongest of good-byes were later (mainly for the readers) since all the kids will undoubtedly have bigger roles to play in this novel anyway, and we've spent so much time getting to know them, not her parents.

ASHAEL IS ADORABLLLLEEEEEE. Ashael and Isadora are SO FREAKING CUTE. I was getting ALL CAUGHT UP in their sweetness and loveliness and just. UGH he is so CUTE. And he gifted her a BOOK AND I JUST LOVE HIM FOR THAT BECAUSE BOOKS??? It did also make me giggle, though, 'cause now she has to lug around a book and I mean she HAS TO BECAUSE IT'S A NEW BOOK so she can't just LEAVE IT BEHIND UNREAD ??? Also, who DOESN'T want a book of everything VOLUME *ONE* I MIGHT ADD as in there are MORE BOOKS OF EVERYTHING.

Clearly she will now have to collECT THEM ALL.

In all honesty, though, I'm really excited to see this book come into play later. How can a book like this NOT come into play? It's going to have some sort of impact somewhere, and I just love this idea a lot. So freaking much. 'Cause she'll have this moment where she remembers Ashael, or Ashael will have helped them even though he wasn't there, or things like that and it's going to work so BEAUTIFULLY and I'm just so EXCITED for that. That and I want to know what's inside.

Also, we see a lot more of Ashael's adorable awkwardness here than we did at the party, and that's probably because Isadora was drinking water, leaving Ashael to just dote on her and carry conversation, which he clearly can do just fine. Here though, he lets his emotions get the best of him, and he rambles in his anxiety or awkwardness and Isadora LOVES HIM FOR IT and I just. can't. my heart <3

I might squeal like a little girl at Build-A-Bear if she ends up running into demons btw because foreshadowing is to die for.

ALSO HE HAS AN APPRENTICESHIP and I LOVE that. Throwing in more tidbits about him here is like freaking candy and I'm so excited about this. My god, I don't want them to part ways here. ;_;

*WHIIIIIIIINE* This last major group good-bye just stole my freaking heart and I just. God, you juggle all these characters and personalities and relationships so freaking well. Do you have, like, a messy character web somewhere with yarn and pins and stuff?? A notebook/journal full of character bios and reltionship webs and I DON'T NKOW, YOU'RE A GOD.

Anyhoot, I love that you found your sobbing opportunity here with Alanna. It's brought up once in a while already foreshadowing this moment, and I love that you used it so well. She's finding comfort with her close friends, has a heartfelt conversation with her big sister (which GETS ME EVERY TIME), uses their endearing nicknames so this hits even CLOSER to home, and then she even sobs into CASSIUS' ARMS AND I JUST. There's something about young children wearing hearts on their sleeves, and you use that to your advantage through Alanna. Even Mishal just about lost it when Alanna hugged him. Something about her innocence just hits everyone and exposes all their emotions with such honesty. What a freaking useful character to have omg.

The simplicity of Rowan's goodbye is so beautiful and in character. They keep it easy, hug Mishal without a second thought, which just got me choked up after thinking about their walk to potions class or whatever it was like GUH. And this is when Mishal starts to buckle, too. When Rowan says goodbye, you can already seeing the reality sink in for Mishal. There's a dynamic between these two that's so beautiful and innocent and I hope we can explore this more.

I had to reread this because it didn't feel like that much time passed for Ember and Alanna to switch out, but it's totally possible. Just made me go back and reread this segment to make sure I read it right. It initially felt like Ember turned into Alanna at some point, but I imagine there was a switcheroo during Isadora's narration.

Ember and Cassius were just wonderful. They were just. wonderful. They stayed in their tough-guy characters the whole time. Cassius is such a softy but he doesn't know what to do with those emotions and just tries to deal with them on his own. His conversation with Mishal was just a bromance to die for and my heart broke a little like god. And originally, I'd have imagined Cassius to just hug Isadora, but he's clearly put on some amount of maturity that even Isadora was sad to see because it felt out of character. But it's significant because the loss of Mishal and Isadora in such a diverse group is going to seriously shift some roles for a bit. Cassius is already acknowledging that, trying to stay strong and supportive while battling his own emotions. He even just had a BIRTHDAY, which is just more FORESHADOWING to his maturing character and GUH. DID YOU PLAN THAT??

And EMBER -- I'm going to cry again -- Mishal scooping her into that hug because Ember was trying too hard to stay strong IT JUST KILLED ME. And then later, she had to do all the talking because Cassius was busy dealing with his emotions on his own and comforting Alanna, who's bashing his guts for not hugging Isadora. And my god, she handles it so Ember-like. She's still young and emotional, and despite her attempts to hold her emotions back to say goodbye, she just can't. It's written all over her face and it's so heartbreaking.

Margaretta had such great timing, goodness. Actually, I didn't know there was a huge caravan packing up in the background. I figure there'd be neighing horses or busy chatter in the back, which would make for easy distraction for those trying to look away and control their emotions. You did mention, though, that you might revisit this because WALKING CARRIAGES??

The way Mishal extended his hand for Isadora, and the way she took it, and I just. I CRIED. THAT'S THE MOMENT I JUST GAVE UP AND CRIED, MELL. ASLDFJASDSADFOJI;OL;LF MALKFJAESF

Why am I so emotional why di you do this to me sob <3

It's easier to come up with new stories than it is to finish the ones you already have. I think every author would feel that way.
