Children with Stars in their Veins (Chapter 3.2)

a/n: hey, thanks for checking out Starry Veins! This is the novel I wrote for Round V of LMS, and it's still a first draft! While I don't discourage any feedback, I prefer not to receive feedback on grammar! I'm not polishing this draft up yet, so I'm not as concerned about editing. I am, of course, open to all feedback, but I ask that you keep this in consideration! Thanks <3

[Rowan]

As they pulled their hand away from Mishal’s, a scorching pain flared through their hand. Several blue flames burst into life at their fingertips and they sucked in a breath so sharp it hurt.

Rowan shook their hand quickly to extinguish the fire. Mishal watched them warily, as if waiting to step in. Even after the flames had winked out at the rapid motion of their hand, the blistering pain continued to bite at their hands.

“I thought you said you were getting better at curbing mistakes like this,” Mishal said as Rowan cradled their angry red hand to their chest.

At least the lab would have a healing pack on hand. Rowan wasn’t the first to consistently injure themselves learning magic. Cassius had once turned the skin on his hands and forearms to grow painful feathers. Ember had been forbidden after the first three times she’d almost burned down the citadel’s neighbouring village.

“This is better than flooding the lab,” they pointed out. “But don’t think I’ll let you get away with changing the subject.”

Mishal turned away from them as they turned down the hall that led to the alchemy lab. “You set your hand on fire,” he said defensively.

“And now it is not on fire, and we’re both comfortably warm,” they argued. Their hand was far past comfortably warm, and they were trying to even out their quickened breathing at the agony flaring through their hand.

“Ori, I don’t want to…” Mishal gestured vaguely. It was too late; he’d already said Ori. Mishal only called anyone by their nickname if it was Ember or he was trying to placate someone.

Rowan stopped in front of the lab’s thick and old wooden door, framed by black iron hinges with a swirling rune on the front that emanated magical energy like a warm summer’s breeze. They leaned against the door handle and crossed their arms over their chest.

“You’re not permitted entry until you talk,” they said. Mishal immediately began to scowl and fuss with the short tassels that hung off his vest. “You’re scared.”

“This isn’t—” Mishal paused as Rowan narrowed their eyes threateningly.

They could lock this door with magic, and as someone who seemed to know everything but magic, Mishal would be more stuck than he already was.

Mishal, recognising his own defeat, sighed and began to pace. “Ok, right. You’ve got me. Are you happy?” He winced and closed his eyes. “Don’t tell anyone else, all right? Especially not Cassius. He’d never let me live it down.”

“Why are you ashamed of being afraid?” they wondered.

Cassius was another beast altogether, but he would never go as far as to try to break someone down. Not even Mishal. He wouldn’t admit it on his life, or his death, but Rowan had seen Cassius bring flowers to Alanna when she’d sliced up her shin once on a root. He’d tried to make stew for Ember when she’d had a fight with her mums. He’d enlisted Isadora’s help once to make Mishal a scarf when Mishal had been under the weather and at the ends of his rope, believing himself useless.

He had, of course, convinced Isadora to give it to Mishal claiming it was from her and not Cassius, but Rowan had seen him making it.

Mishal, on the other hand, was avoiding their gaze. This was a conversation he was wrestling with. He was too proud, and it brought a prickling sensation to the back of Rowan’s neck.

“I’m not doing this gladly,” they said. “My hand is killing me, and I know there’s ice inside.”

That earned them a softer frown. “Then your answer is… I don’t know how— look, I don’t expect— it’s not some extravagance. It’s simple and stupid. I don’t like this expedition, and I don’t like how little we know. That’s all there is.” Mishal stopped in front of Rowan now. “Can we please go in now?”

Rowan shifted away from the door handle and a viper couldn’t have moved faster than Mishal to it. They rolled their eyes at him, but Mishal was already pushing open the door and moving inside.

“You’re late,” Professor Coquelin said as they entered. He was pouring through a tome and didn’t look up at Rowan shut the door, or Mishal moved over to the vial and drip system set up at one of three similar stations in the gloomily lit room.

There wasn’t room for more than three. The potions lab was not terribly big and entirely stuffed with herbs and ingredients and books, and everything else was more or less crammed in hastily.

“Sorry Professor,” Mishal murmured as he began to set up the potion station for the lesson, twisting the gear-knobs and shifting some of the tubes that connected the silvery vials to each other.

“We were discussing the expedition,” Rowan explained, walking to the left side of the stone-covered room—a precaution against the elements, especially as stone didn’t burn—and opening the gilded glass cabinet. They lifted an enchanted silk pouch from inside. It chilled their fingers to the touch, and they let out a sigh as they wrapped their hand around it.

When they turned back, Professor Coquelin was raising his head to glance between them. “Ah, the big expedition. You must be excited.”

Mishal finally turned away from his equipment and glanced at Rowan. “Yes,” he said, unconvincingly.

Coquelin either did not notice Mishal’s hesitation or didn’t care. He set the tome aside and raised himself from his stool. He eyed Rowan holding the enchanted cold pouch and frowned. “What was it this time?”

“They were trying to warm me up,” Mishal jumped in instantly.

“Not your fault,” Rowan said.

“Ah. That spell.” Coquelin stretched his arms over the top of his frizzy salt-and-pepper hair. “That one is known for granting heat too literally sometimes. Now, you two might be late, but you’re both here. Gracia is not. Somebody caught the bloody cold or something. Set up your stations, you two both know how it’s done. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

Gracia, or Professor Disraeli, was either late or much earlier than anyone else. Her physician duties always took precedence over her potions instructing, but it wasn’t like anyone in the Chronicler’s Guild was out fighting. They were historians, not soldiers.

But they had just departed the coldest season of the year. Illnesses were not so uncommon at such a time.

Rowan sat on the low, carved-back stool with a soft cushion to pad the seat. With their free hand, they began to set up the station for… they were to make potions to soothe the aches of travel.

Back to the expedition again. It was leaking into every aspect of their lives. The celebration of Isa’s birthday had been mostly people wishing her well on the expedition. It had been about her leaving, not about her birthday. Alanna had been miserable the whole time. Isa spent the celebration in her honour trying to attend to everyone’s excitement, and then her younger sister.

She already did that nearly every day. Her birthday was supposed to be her break.

“I’m scared of leaving. Of being away from everyone,” Mishal said quietly. So quietly, Rowan almost didn’t hear.

But they did. They stopped aggressively disconnecting a tube from one of the bottom vials and wheeled their stool around to glance at Mishal. His back was turned from Rowan, and he was making no movements on his own station, but there was a slump to the way he sat.

There was a cloud of coiled, hot tension that clung to Mishal, and spread around the room. Rowan tucked their hands in their lap, squeezing the cold pouch as if to reassure themself.

“Even Cassius?” they asked, their tone light to cut the that choking tension.

Mishal only turned a little, but they could see the beginning of a smile playing at Mishal’s mouth. “Maybe when I come back, he’ll have grown up. Gotten himself focused.” It wasn’t a denial, which was about the closest he’d get to an agreement.

Rowan smiled. “He is focused.” Maybe you’ll learn to laugh at his shenanigans. They would never pick sides between them, but the two could have a much more beneficial understanding of each other if they weren’t so stubborn.

It made Mishal scoff. “Focused on irritating me. At least the expedition will give me a break.” Mishal finally turned and was frowning again. It wasn’t as stormy as it had been before. “Don’t you remember all the things he’s done to try to distract me in the library?”

“You mean like the time with the scarlet woman?” They began snickering. “That was hilarious. He paid money for that one. You’ve got to give him some credit. Even if it totally backfired.”

“It was demeaning!” Mishal protested, less amused now. “He wasted almost two hours of her life doing nothing but sitting in a library just to get a rise out of me!”

Rowan grinned, biting the inside of their cheek to keep from laughing. “She did start reading when she realised you weren’t going to pay her any attention. I’d love getting paid to read for two hours wearing nothing but a few silks.” They giggled again when Mishal buried his face in his hands. “Stormy, you told him that you hadn’t found any girls distracting enough to pull your attention away from your studies, you had to have known that was a direct challenge.”

Mishal ran a hand through his hair and began fussing with one of the gears on his station, despite it already being set up. “Yes, none of you will ever let that go, will you? Not to mention any of the other countless, ridiculous things he’s done. What about the time with the forty canaries? Or the upside-down room? The bottom of all my furniture and several of my books are still sticky!”

The upside-down room they’d only heard second hand. But the forty canaries? That was a masterpiece. Rowan glanced away, not that Mishal was looking at them. They’d helped with that one. Mishal might have known Ember was Cassius’ partner in crime but didn’t know how often he came to Rowan for aid. None of them did, save for perhaps Isadora. If she did, she hadn’t said so.

The door swung opened for Professor Coquelin to enter, closely tailed by Gracia. Her hair was frizzy, and several strands had fallen from her once tightly pulled back updo, but her eyes were shining and bright as she smiled at Rowan and Mishal. They waved with their unburnt hand gleefully.

“Once you’re done with the cold application, remember to apply salve to that so it heals. I won’t have you in the infirmary with an infection or a mangled hand because you ‘forgot’ to take care of yourself,” Gracia told them, waggling a finger at them.

Rowan grinned shyly. “If I had burned Mishal’s hand, I would believe that to be more of a concern.”

“I can take care of myself,” Mishal grumbled. It was a weak argument, but at least Gracia laughed.

“Somewhere buried deep, I’m sure of it,” she replied, and threw a wink at Rowan. “Now, let’s begin before the end of time falls upon us and we’re all withered and old.”

Scribs!

I was gonna review this last night, but then I got distracted with Checklisting for the Challenge -- BUT I'M BACK NOW also I only have 1 other checklist beyond the High Number Chapters, which I'm planning to get with your novel, so hopefully I'll have SUPER CONCENTRATED ATTENTION HERE NOW

“I thought you said you were getting better at curbing mistakes like this,” Mishal said as Rowan cradled their angry red hand to their chest.

*swats Mishal* Be nice! They're hurttt

Cassius had once turned the skin on his hands and forearms to grow painful feathers.

The "turned" is an odd word choice here that doesn't really make a lot of sense?

He eyed Rowan holding the enchanted cold pouch and frowned. “What was it this time?”

Ahah big mood.

His back was turned from Rowan,

Wouldn't this be his back was turned TO Rowan? Because if his back was turned FROM Rowan he'd be facing them, right?

What about the time with the forty canaries?

Omg I LOVE Rowan and I LOVE Cassius! Cuties. The more I hear about Cassius, the more I absolutely adore him. He is... me xD I like to pretend like I'm all tough like Jerica or stoic like Ky but I am absolutely a bratty little Sassius Cassius.

I think you're doing a really nice job introducing your characters in these recent chapters! They're each really starting to gain a more distinctive voice and are adorable and makes me want to read on. I'm really hoping we get more of Ember soon, and maybe some more Isadora too so I get a better feel for her character since it seems like she'll play a big role if she's going on the quest though I have the distinctive feeling that Cassius is somehow going to end up on it too

Looking forward to the next bit!

Keep writing and Happy RevMo!

~Shady

SASSIUS how did I never think of that

also aren't we all a little bit of Cassius and honestly is it a bad thing because he's SO LOVABLE

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REVIEWS <333 as always, I deeply appreciate them and you!!!

For sure! <3 I'm loving this novel! I realized last night my reviews were starting to devolve into screaming so I decided to stop for the time being xD But they're SO cute omg

Hey there! I'm finally getting back to this xD I may have forgotten something since I'm rather forgetful, so if I say anything stupid, then please pardon me!

As they pulled their hand away from Mishal’s, a scorching pain flared through their hand. Several blue flames burst into life at their fingertips and they sucked in a breath so sharp it hurt.

OOH MAGIC

Cassius had once turned the skin on his hands and forearms to grow painful feathers.

If you take some parts out, it would read "Cassius had once turned the skin to grow painful feathers" which doesn't really make sense to me xD Perhaps you could rewords this sentence? (but ouch, that does not sound fun)

Cassius bring flowers to Alanna when she’d sliced up her shin once on a root. He’d tried to make stew for Ember when she’d had a fight with her mums. He’d enlisted Isadora’s help once to make Mishal a scarf when Mishal had been under the weather and at the ends of his rope, believing himself useless.

Aww so there seems to be more to Cassius than we have seen so far <3

Professor Coquelin said as they entered. He was pouring through a tome and didn’t look up at Rowan shut the door

I believe you meant "as" instead of "at"

“I’m scared of leaving. Of being away from everyone,” Mishal said quietly.

AWW </3 (haha I get so invested in the story that I keep forgetting I'm reviewing)

“He wasted almost two hours of her life doing nothing but sitting in a library just to get a rise out of me!”

Unless I misread, I believe you meant "his life" instead of "her"

Or the upside-down room?

WHAT

“Now, let’s begin before the end of time falls upon us and we’re all withered and old.”

Well that was dark :c

Ahh and that's it! Sorry if this was super shot/unhelpful, but I just love your characters a bunch and there's not much for me to share but love xD I love how we got to see in Mishal's mind a bit this chapter. I agree with Jabber that their moments were really nice together. The atmosphere felt so quite and calm and nostalgic and sad, and I feel so bad for Mishal. Rowan seems like such an interesting character. There's so much more to them then we know now, and I'm really excited to read more about all the characters. I hope this helped! :D

Image

Unless I misread, I believe you meant "his life" instead of "her"

unlike my usual pronoun mishaps, this actually meant to be "her life"! he was referring to the woman cassius convinced to distract mishal! :)

I'm so glad that you're loving the characters!! and thank you so much for your reviews <33 I really appreciate them (even if I'm sometimes terrible at responding!! I do read them and they make me very happy :D)

Thanks for the clarification! :D

Aw c: I'm glad to hear <33

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world),

Now entering rapid review phase,

First Impression: Continues on the same vein as the previous one. So again nice amount of development on Rowan and Mishal. Also the two Professor's seem pretty good too. Not a whole lot happens plotwise but I'm assuming that's because we are still establishing each of these characters.

As they pulled their hand away from Mishal’s, a scorching pain flared through their hand. Several jade-coloured flames burst into life at their fingertips and they sucked in a breath so sharp it hurt.

Looks like we have a pretty complicated magic system in the works.

Ember had been forbidden after the first three times she’d almost burned down the citadel’s neighbouring village.

So can everyone harness magic and some people just happen to be bad at it or is it only these mentioned children?

“Ori, I don’t want to…” Mishal gestured vaguely. It was too late; he’d already said Ori. Mishal only called anyone by their nickname if it was Ember or he was trying to placate someone.

So most of these nicknames have nothing to do with the real names. I hope we get to learn the origins of these nicknames soon.

“This isn’t—” Mishal paused as Rowan narrowed their eyes threateningly.

So did Mishal get this new scared feeling after the announcement? Like I mentioned earlier in the initial chapter Mishal appears to be pretty excited to go on this expedition.

This is some lovely insight into Cassius. So far we've only seen him as a troublemaker and it is nice to see that there is much more to him than that.

He had, of course, convinced Isadora to give it to Mishal claiming it was from her and not Cassius, but Rowan had seen him making it.

“I’m not doing this gladly,” they said. “My hand is killing me, and I know there’s ice inside.”

Slight inconsistency. You first mention a healing pack then here it is ice and later he uses some kind of cold pouch thing which seems to be the same as ice. But then after that a healing salve is mentioned.

“Sorry Professor,” Mishal murmured as he began to set up the potion station for the lesson, twisting the gear-knobs and shifting some of the tubes that connected the silvery vials to each other.

That sounds like a really interesting potions brewing system.

“Not your fault,” Rowan said.

This would imply that Mishal is taking the blame for it and Rowan corrects that but then what Mishal said sounded more like he was just explaining the incident.

Set up your stations, you two both know how it’s done. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

Two things here. The part in bold is unnecessary as the previous sentence implies that already. Second why would Professor C(That is really hard to spell so I'm calling him Professor C) wait till the students, who were late, to go call Gracia.

She already did that nearly every day. Her birthday was supposed to be her break.

Now that's an interesting addition.

“I’m scared of leaving. Of being away from everyone,” Mishal said quietly. So quietly, Rowan almost didn’t hear.

Now this is a tad repetitive. I think we have been told enough to realize this by now.

Now this is an interesting side of Rowan's.

“Once you’re done with the cold application, remember to apply salve to that so it heals. I won’t have you in the infirmary with an infection or a mangled hand because you ‘forgot’ to take care of yourself,” Gracia told them, waggling a finger at them.

Okay so we get the salve again. I think you should mention these a tad more clearly.

And that's it for this one.

Overall: I love the reminiscing done here. Also those are some great pranks. Cassius is pretty inventive. I wish we get some details on those eventually.

As always take what you think is useful and forget the rest.

Stay Safe

Heya, mellifera! I've read the first half of the chapter so I'm up to speed with it. I'm at work right now so I'm writing this ~covertly~

I really liked the chance to see Rowan and Mishal interacting! Mishal is just so uptight and unable to relax - it's kind of adorable, but it also makes me feel bad for him. I know how it is to be the 'serious' one in a group of friends, and how hard it is to stomach pranks and light-hearted jokes when you struggle to laugh at yourself. I love Rowan too, though - they've got this subtle mischievousness that feels like it makes total sense. Beware the quiet ones.

My favourite bit of the chapter was when they were reminiscing about Cassius's pranks. The scarlet woman thing is hilarious. I also like the little titbits of worldbuilding we get regarding magic, which can obviously go wrong so easily. I did struggle to understand what was going on with the spell at first. Because you ended the previous segment with it, I think I assumed it was more significant than it actually was. He was just trying to warm them both up because of the chilly weather, right? And he overdid it?

I think my only issue with this chapter is pacing, because it feels like you're dwelling a lot on stuff that the previous chapter mostly dealt with. We already established that Mishal doesn't feel great about leaving and is going to miss everyone, and all this chapter does is go over that from an outsider POV. I'd like to see a bit more progression. I'm invested in this exhibition and have a horrible sense that it's going to go badly wrong, so I want to see Mishal and Isa set out and actually explore these ruins.

So, still enjoyable overall, but I'd like the story to pick up the pace a bit more. I think you could easily condense the exploration of Mishal's doubts and fears into one chapter. That said, I did like seeing him interact with Rowan, I liked all the throwbacks to Cassius's pranks, and I think you're dropping hints to an interesting magic system. Looking forward to reading the next bit!

Keep writing! :D

Oh, my word. These two are just adorable.

WE WILL NOT LET THIS GO. I take this as a DIRECT CHALLENGE to ship you with EVERY POTENTIAL BACHELOR/ETTE we meet. HAVE FUN!!!!

I found it interesting that the narration for Rowan's PoV continued to call Gracia by her name and not Professor Disraeli. I wonder if this is intentional! Perhaps Gracia prefers first-name basis or she and Rowan could be close. It was an intriguing inconsistency in professor naming convention!

So I totally thought Gracia had the cold herself. I don't know how I was led to believe she was out with the cold (I'm chalking that up to my good ol' blonde noggin), but she was obviously tending to someone else who had the cold as she clearly has medical duties. She also sounds lovely and I want more of her.

I'm curious about this Professor Coquelin. I think Rowan mentioned him before, but he seems to not be the proper instructor for this class; so I wonder why he's here!

It was also really interesting to see this heating spell suddenly backfire and burn Rowan's hand. And this is a normal occurrence! Coquelin mentioned later on that it was due to the literal nature of the spell, which supports the idea that magic is VERY literal and wording is SUPER improtant. I wonder if there was a way for Rowan to prevent burning his hand at the time with different phrasing!

The best part of this entire segment is the memories Rowan and Mishal share. This really continues the nostalgia Mishal is feeling and how sad he is about leaving everyone. At the same time, it also builds character for the others as well. Cassius is not just a troll, but he also cares very deeply for everyone. Rowan finds these pranks equally hilarious and will subtly chip in where needed, giving him a playful nature as well. And of course Mishal's attitude with the whole scarlet woman scenario that had me laughing nearly as much as Rowan (poor Mishal though XD).

OH! I also wanted to mention how I liked the tie between the potion they were making and the expedition. It would be cool if the reason they were making this potion was because of the expedition, like Mishal and Isha will have it in their packs later for the journey. It was a clever idea to use it in potions class!

So yes, I generally enjoyed this segment as well! Like I said, it was the nostalgia part of it that really sold it. Rowan preventing them from walking inside seemed a bit much as it seemed obvious Mishal was, in fact, afraid, but I kinda liked that about his character too. Mishal clearly shouldn't be keeping these feelings to himself, and Rowan has a certain level of wisdom to know that much and get his friend to talk. We also get a little more magic/potion exposure and we meet a couple of the professors finally! Somehow this whole shindig is run the way it is, so it's good to get some faces now. (MORE GRACIA PLZ KTHX.)

Looking forward to the next part!!
