a/n: hey, thanks for checking out Starry Veins! This is the novel I wrote for Round V of LMS, and it's still a first draft! While I don't discourage any feedback, I prefer not to receive feedback on grammar! I'm not polishing this draft up yet, so I'm not as concerned about editing. I am, of course, open to all feedback, but I ask that you keep this in consideration! Thanks <3

[Mishal]
Mishal sighed and rubbed the side of his face. “Guildmaster Margaretta invited Isadora and I to accompany an expedition to one of the ruins for study. There’s lost history there that the Guildmaster wants to uncover for our records.” He had to stop then, as Alanna’s expression grew more and more downtrodden the longer he spoke.
“You’re going to study one of the ruins?” Rowan asked. “Why’d she pick only the two of you?”
“Because we’re the oldest,” Mishal replied. He almost said more, but then glanced over at Rowan, who was frowning. It was almost… pained.
Ember had her arms crossed over her chest. “Aren’t the ruins haunted or cursed or something? What if you die?”
“Ember!” Mishal hissed, eyeing Alanna. She looked as though she was close to either tears or screaming. She stared towards him with bright, watery eyes, but he wondered if she was seeing him or not.
“Why didn’t Isa tell me?” Alanna wondered morosely. Then she promptly sat upon the ground, or perhaps collapsed was the better word, and stared sullenly at the dirt. Her nails absently raked over the soil, tearing up the tiny sprigs of grass beginning to burst from the soil. It must have still been hardened from the cold season. It couldn’t have been comfortable.
The question struck Mishal in the chest and he tried to swallow back the sticky sensation in his throat at Alanna’s anguish. “We only found out last night. She likely meant to and hadn’t gotten around to it yet. You’ve both been busy today.”
“Because you’re the oldest,” Rowan muttered, and kicked a stone. “I’m only a few months younger.”
Mishal stifled another sigh and approached the rack of training swords instead. He set the hilt of the one he’d picked out into the clasp and then snapped it shut, the metal icy under his fingers. He hadn’t brought a jacket, figuring he’d be plenty warm once he began training, but the adrenaline didn’t last.
“But how did Cassius know? Why didn’t you tell us?” Alanna asked behind him. He wasn’t sure whether her tone was more accusing or forlorn.
He went to Ember and collected her sword at well. She was still watching him through narrowed eyes.
“Because Cassius eavesdropped,” Mishal said, with more venom than perhaps was necessary. His head was beginning to ache. He went to put the training sword back onto its proper rack. “We’re not even leaving right away. It’s still some weeks out. Thirteenth day of New Bloom.”
“Yeah, and how long will you be gone?” Ember asked. Her eyes were hard and her jaw set.
“Which ruin are you even going to?” Rowan chimed in, still sounding petulant.
“The Valley Ruins. They’re the closest,” he said. “And I don’t know. The Guildmaster didn’t say. I guess it depends on how long it takes to get there, and how much there is to study.”
“I hope there’s nothing.” Alanna stood up. She didn’t meet anyone’s gaze. “I’m going inside.”
Mishal’s heart sank as he watched her turn and begin striding purposefully away. “Pika,” he tried. “You haven’t even taken your lesson yet.”
She didn’t turn back around. “Don’t wanna.”
As he watched her walk away, he wished he could just open his mouth and say something. His mouth might as well have been sewn shut.
Alanna would get over it. She had to. She needed some alone time, as she always did when she was upset, but then she’d come around.
When Guildmaster Margaretta had opened the offer for him and Isadora to come with on an expedition, he hadn’t thought the others would be upset. He’d miss training with Alanna and Ember, he’d miss his alchemy lessons with Rowan. He’d miss…
He could do without Cassius’ pranks and general irresponsibility.
“I’ve got to go practise my creation from nothing,” Rowan declared. They scooped their things up from the ground and dumped it into the satchel they carried. When they glanced back up at him, however, their expression softened. “I promised Professor Coquelin I’d work on it so there’s no more mishaps.”
They nodded to him, which was about the best he was going to get, before setting out.
“You’re going to train me with flails again, before you leave,” Ember said. Her arms were still crossed, but her jaw wasn’t set anymore. There was a slight curl to her lip.
“Says who?” he asked warily.
“Says me,” she said. “You’ve got to make up for abandoning us all by doing what I say.” Then she smiled, and he wasn’t sure whether it was genuinely gleeful or not.
He frowned. “I’m not abandoning anyone.”
She shrugged. “Yeah, yeah. I don’t make the rules, I just know ‘em. They say ‘In case of sudden departure, guilty party’s got to make it up to the victim.’ Victim says no more swords.”
“You’re not a victim,” he told her. “And that’s not a real thing.”
“Too late, it is now.” She snatched the pouch that he’d set aside. “Anyway, I’ve got places to be. Better make this up to Pika.”
Then she skipped away, stray frizzes of curls jumping around her head.
They couldn’t possibly have believed all six of them would stay at the Chroniclers’ Citadel forever. They’d all experience the world one way or another. It wasn’t his fault that the others were younger. This was a huge undertaking. It was a good thing.
So they’d be gone, but it wasn’t like they’d never see each other again. Why couldn’t the others see that?
* * *
At dinner the following night, tension had appeared to more or less dissipate to some degree. Alanna was still moping and had been mostly quiet ever since their training session. Isadora hadn’t spoken much either.
Mishal almost didn’t notice the smile threatening Cassius’ mouth when they all sat at the long table.
He hesitated to reach for his food. Cassius didn’t even bring his hands up to eat. He was watching everyone else, his eyes bright as he scanned the table.
Glancing around, he watched as Alanna picked half-heartedly at the stuffed chicken. Ember, sitting next to Cassius, was eyeing her as she cut a slice of her own food. Isadora leaned over to Alanna and wordlessly cut a piece of the chicken for her.
Rowan was meticulously slicing his food as the two girls both took bites. Mishal glanced back at Cassius, but it was short-lived when Alanna shrieked. Ember spit her food out and grabbed a glass of water.
Cassius burst into a fit of laughter as everyone turned, bewildered, to Alanna and Ember.
“What’s wrong?” Isadora asked. “What happened?”
Alanna was pale and looked vaguely ill, and Isadora touched her forehead gingerly. Ember turned to glare at Cassius. “There’s beetles in this.”
It only made Cassius laugh harder, until there were tears in the corner of his eyes. Mishal scowled at him and shoved his own plate away.
“Ew!” Alanna cried. “Ew, Cassius, ew! That’s— ew!” She began spitting onto her plate, but she’d apparently swallowed the bite she’d already taken. “I just ate bugs, that’s so gross, Cassius! Why would you do that?!”
Isadora seemed to be trying to give Cassius a stern expression, her lips pressed tightly together to contain her own mirth. Ember was starting to snicker now too, even though she had been one of the recipients.
He turned to Rowan, who was watching the proceedings with little reaction. Until they glanced down at their food, curious. Cassius tried to stifle his giggles to watch them.
Then Rowan took a bite of the chicken and began to crunch on it with a thoughtful expression. Cassius immediately stopped laughing and stared at them with faint horror. Ember put her hands over her mouth but hadn’t ceased her own amusement. Alanna’s mouth was open as she stared with the same nauseated expression as before at Rowan. Isadora watched them with her eyebrows raised.
Mishal shifted on the sleek wooden bench. He was uncomfortably aware of the gazes of many of the Dining Hall’s residence. All their parents were only a table away, although seemed bemused of the situation.
Across the hall, on a raised dais, the Guildmaster was watching them with an unreadable expression on her face.
“I put beetles in that!” Cassius whispered loudly, eyes wide as he stared at Rowan. “What are you doing?”
Rowan glanced up. “Not poisonous beetles, I take it?”
Cassius stared at them, then shook his head meekly. “No, why would I—?”
“Well then,” they said. “No harm done.” And without waiting for a respond, took another bite of their chicken.
Alanna whined from her place between him and Isadora. “That’s disgusting!”
“Why? It’s not like they’re alive anymore.” They shrugged. “The crunch is a little off putting though.”
Ember laughed wildly into her hands while Cassius stared down at his food, mildly horrified. Isadora was still pressing her lips together, but now she’d taken to rubbing Alanna’s back. Alanna had her face buried in her hands.
“The crunch is off putting,” Ember sniggered through her hands.
“I’m going to go get some uncontaminated supper,” Mishal said, and stood up. “You shouldn’t waste food, Cassius.”
“He’s not the one wasting the food,” Rowan pointed out, munching on another bite of the stuffed chicken. “You’re all cowards.”
As he collected everyone’s beetle-filled food—save Rowan—and made Cassius give his to Alanna, a pang settled into his chest. He wouldn’t have this, for months. There would be no more dinners with all six of them, settled around a table. He wouldn’t miss having beetle-infested food, but…
He
found he was hardly hungry by the time he’d returned with the new
servings of food, and it wasn’t because of the thought of any
beetles crawling through it.

What I Like
I learned a new word! Yay!
Cassius's prank is just-- it's funny, but ewww! Why, Cassius. why?
What I Dislike
There were a few pronoun issues that could be easily fixed with a quick skim.
Here you're inserting your own thoughts and interrupting the flow of the story as a whole. After you take your reader out of the story, it can take a while to get back in. If nothing else, I recommend that you rewrite/reword/revise this section, because it will really help you in the scheme of things.
Have a nice [*insert time of day here*]!!!
Scribs!
I'm back and ready for more! Let's get started...
AWWWW buddy <333 Rip my heart out and stomp on it, why don't ya :c
xD Okay, I think I was just in a bad mood when I reviewed the first chapter. This dynamic between Cassius and Mishal is freaking adorable in all ways. I love them both. I take back my disdain for Mishal.
oh NO, big foreshadowing vibessssss scribsssss be nice to the children for once
You and your pronouns I swearisn't Rowan they not he?hahahaha omg I LOVE this so much. They're all so adorable! Rowan is quickly shooting up to being one of my favorite characters, this is just xD Omg child. I feel like I have a new favorite with each section, and this time Rowan definitely took that cake.
This is by far my favorite chapter so far! I love all of the interactions here. This is really endearing and just... makes me actually care? about the characters. It's gonna make it harder once Mishal and Isadora leave, for sure. I'm looking forward to reading the next part!
Keep writing and Happy RevMo!

yes >.> one day I will stop letting my fingers randomly type pronouns for any given character at any given time
THAT'S GOOD lmao but seriously!!! !!!!!! I'm so happy you have no idea!! I can NEVER stop saying this but thank you for your reviews!!!! <33333
Hey there! I am back for the next chapter and excited to see where this goes
It should be "Isadora and me" (you can tell because if you remove "Isadora" it sounds right to say "GM invited me").
Aw, poor Alanna :3
Haha, I love Ember xD She's quite the character!
Ooh, I love this description! You can really tell how Alanna feels from this, aww
I believe you meant "as well"
AWW Alanna </3
Haha xD This really pulled me out of the sentimental mood but I didn't mind at all!
Shouldn't "there's" be "there're" since "mishaps" is plural?
Ember perhaps is my fav character
Why do I have a bad feeling about this?
Same thing here with the "There are"
Omg, Rowan
Aw, this chapter is a little sad :3
I really enjoyed this chapter. I like how you focused on the relationships of the children rather than action. It was a little of a "softer chapter," if that makes sense, and that's what I really liked about it. It's good for character development! Overall, you have another great chapter, and I'm excited to check out the next part. I hope this helped!
I'm very glad to hear that!! I adore her so much, she's so much fun to write <3
as always, thank you for your reviews!! I know I don't always reply, but I see all of them and I'm very grateful
Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world)
Marching onwards
First Impression: This scene was the smoothest so far. You do a good job of balancing all the characters and making them all shine individually.
Anyways, let's get right to it.
This is really good characterization to keep with the age of the characters and personalities.
Also why are these people interrogating only him. Wouldn't they ask this Guildmaster or their parents who would probably know more details? I don't see that any of them actually asked their parents.
I don't think this one needs to be its own paragraph. It would have just as much impact connected to the previous paragraph and that would flow better.
Why does she think that they are leaving forever?
Great prank but how exactly did he pull that off without putting beetles into all the other dishes too. You mention how the second helpings were not contaminated.
Love this bit of characterization for Rowan.
Again some good personality development.
So that's it for this. I'm taking a small break but I'll be back.
Overall: Once again this seems a bit slow paced here but I suppose that's not a huge issue. And good job on ensuring all the characters have clearly distinguishable personalties. Not easy to do with so many characters.
As always take what you think helps and forget the rest.
Stay Safe

Hiya! Back again to review the next bit.

This felt a lot smoother than the previous chapter, but it might just be because I have a better sense of who everyone is now. Like JabberHut says, I thought you handled the kids' reaction to Mishal's impending departure really well. They all react differently - Rowan indignant and jealous, Alanna worried, and Ember mocking and annoyed (which I get the sense is to hide her own fear). Their responses really showcase their personalities, but they also make them seem delightfully young. To them, Mishal leaving just for a little while feels like the end of the world, because kids never have much sense of perspective. Mishal's defensive about it, but I think he's as uneasy about leaving as they are, in a lot of ways.
The second scene at the table was still good, and again showed character well (Rowan straight-up eating beetles to prove a point is WILD. It's made them an insta-fave character for me). However, it didn't feel like it resolved much of the tension that you set up in the first half of the chapter, which bothered me slightly. The first scene ends on a fraught note, because they're all upset by the news and Mishal is annoyed that they can't see things his way. I feel like more of those bad vibes should carry over into the next scene, but it feels more like they're swept aside in favour of light-hearted comedy. It's not a huge deal, and maybe you're going to have them make peace in the next chapter, but it'd have been good if you could weave the reconciliation into this scene. Maybe you could hone in on the moment where Mishal makes Cassius swap his meal with Alana, have him interact with her a bit, and bring the chapter back towards that tension. I like the way you end the section, but I think you could segue back to Mishal's sadness slightly more smoothly.
That's just a thought, anyway; do with it what you will. I really liked the chapter overall!
Keep writing!

Omg. Before I get into the second segment, I have to say: Poor Mishal. Like, omg. All these kids interrogating him like the end of the world was nigh. I'm really glad Mishal noticed and tried to press that it'd be fine because he couldn't logically think why they'd never see each other again. This is handled really well in that we're led to believe that "kids will be kids," and these guys are just overreacting because they're young or life's unfair or they aren't used to change. Yet there's still that small possibility that perhaps something is off?? INTRIGUE.

Like. Poor Rowan, I want him to go. He's only a couple months younger AND I WANT HIM TO GOOOO. He and his hat deserve an adventure. :C It IS intriguing, however, that he is only a couple months younger and still was overlooked for this particular mission. What does Margaretta have in mind?
Also EMBER MADE ME LAUGH. I LOVE EMBER. I love Ember. Her reasoning with Mishal is just hilarious and adorable and she deserves another lesson with flails. Swords are totally overrated, Ember. Totally.
EWWWWWWWWWWWWW CASSIUS OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWEWEWEWEWEWEW
LOL OMG it's so gross but I giggled THE WHOLE TIME OMG THAT'S SO GROSS.
I genuinely LOVE what you did with this scene. Omg. Sometimes, it takes an extreme situation like this to bring out their personalities, and it really worked super well here. I got an incredibly strong sense of Alanna and Isadora, of Ember and Cassius, of Rowan and Mishal. Just. All of them. I love them ALL.
And hidden behind the prank, we see Alanna and Isadora are an adorable pair of sisters. I can see how Alanna would miss this because this moment alone, where Isadora cuts Alanna's chicken for her withotu Alanna shooing her away, proves just how much Isadora is a part of Alanna's life. They're incredibly close. And it kinda made me sad as I got a better understanding of Alanna's grief.
Ember is hilarious. Like, she was super disgusted by having almost eaten a beetle, but she found the humor in it instantly. I can see how she herself can be silly and pull pranks on others. And also, the fact that she continued to laugh when Rowan ate the beetles, even though Cassius was actually disgusted, just made me want to laugh too. She clearly sees the humor and has such a fun personality. Cassius can be such a clown. Omg these kids are all just so much FUN.
And ROWAN. FREAKING. ROWAN. LOL.
Anyway, I got off topic because we also see in this scene how the parents also eat in the exact same hall, as does the Guildmaster. Everyone is eating dinner together in some sort of mess hall, and it's just an interesting glimpse into their culture. Perhaps this is Margaretta's way of keeping tabs on everyone, ensuring no one's gotten any ideas about running off or anything. Or perhaps this is simply their way of maintaining a sense of community! It's kind of interesting when you consider all these kids could have grown into a royal family instead, but now they're just a bunch of average-ish kids in a unique living arrangement (unbeknownst to the kids).
I fully enjoyed this segment. I really did! This really strengthened your characters, and I really look forward to reading more. I can tell you had fun with this one because I had so much fun reading this.
Can't wait for more!
you're so fast at reviewing omg teach me your secrets
that's exactly what I was going for here!! I'm so glad that it came across aaa :'D
I'm also really glad you could tell I was fully indulging myself in this chapter aha
thank you so much <333
