Hello good people of Storybook town!

Today I come to you with some very exciting news - we have added 12 Storybook badges for you to earn!

What do these badges look like?

Well they're shiny of course and badge-y and they look like these:

Oooh shiny! How do I get one?
Spoiler! :
If you want a badge, you need to be given a storybook challenge which you can then complete to earn a number of adventurer credits. These challenges will be issued by storybook owners or participants to revive or encourage movement in a storybook. There will also be a Captain's Challenge every month which can be completed for any storybook and is open to all.

For example, I might challenge someone in my storybook to have their character reveal a secret to character x within three posts. I would do this by posting in this thread and tagging the challenged adventurer. They would then gain 1-3 credits upon successful completion.

Who can issue a challenge?
Spoiler! :
Anyone who is the storybook owner or has a Novice rank or higher and is participating in the storybook may issue a challenge.

What must a challenge require?
Spoiler! :
To be a valid challenge it needs to require the challenged adventurer to make at least one additional post in the storybook and it can offer no more than 6 adventurer credits as a reward. Occasionally there will be official challenges issued which will allow more credits to be earned for a single challenge.

I've got enough adventurer credits for a badge... how do I claim it?
Spoiler! :
Simply make a post in this thread and a moderator will be along to verify your credits and award you with the badge.

Can I earn points from my own challenges?
Spoiler! :
Well I don't see why not. You're also putting in the effort to make a post and do the extra challenges, right? Now, if you're making easy challenges just to earn points... well *gives a stern look*

Who gives out the points? Can I use them for anything else and can they be obtained by anything other than these Challenges?
Spoiler! :
The Storybook Crew gives out the points once either you say in this thread that you've finished a challenge or we see that you have. And, these points are just for this challenge! They're made up and the only other way the SB Crew will award points will be through Captain's Challenges, Storybook Workshops, or other events!

It had been a long, long time since Dungeon Master Hunter had regaled the Order of the Storybook with his wondrous tales of a newly promoted member’s exploits and virtues. He remembered the cheering, the feasts, the merrymaking until dawn came to conclude the celebration... He remembered a time where his words were carved into the Hall of Fame for all to remember. But alas, with Dungeon Master Lumi’s departure for distant lands and new adventures, the hall had fallen into neglect. Now, titles were awarded with solemn bows and privately held parties.

Hunter gazed to his left, at Dungeon Masters Mage and Fox, and to his right, at Dungeon Masters Sheyren and Wolfical. All five members of the Storied Council sat in their ceremonial attire, for that day, he had resolved to revive the old traditions.

“Veteran Sound!” he proclaimed.

The seasoned storybooker @soundofmind bowed her head. But not in disgrace, oh no — it was a sign of the humility of one unafraid to toil long nights and sacrifice bright days, all without a word of complaint. Behind her, every other member of the order still within the lands sat in tense anticipation.

“You kneel before us today to receive the most precious, the most coveted of armaments: the Gold Shield.”

Veteran @Omnom approached Sound with the lustrous mark of her pending rank.

“Your adventures have seen you travel to many places, but none can compare with your legendary quest into the baleful Outlands. You have not only survived the worst that nature and man can throw at you, but you have accomplished that which is most noble of all — you have led your fellow adventurers, your dearest friends and companions, back to safety as well.”

Master Hunter beamed and rose, the motion hiding the shivers of pride that ran along his limbs. His four fellow councillors followed suit, all equally delighted. The waiting crowd inhaled and dared not as much as blink.

“For your courage, your loyalty, and your dedication to this order, we bestow upon you the rank of Dungeon Master. Accept the token of our esteem and come sit beside Master Wolfical, who can attest to your perseverance and vigour as none other.”

As soon as Master Sound accepted her shield from a grinning Omnom, the crowd burst into applause, cheers, whistles, and every possible manner of jubilation. She turned towards them and faced perhaps the most daunting foes of all: the adoration of the masses for a beloved icon. She bowed her head again and turned, approaching her waiting seat. Master Hunter was moved when he saw tears of joy stream across her face.

Wolfical wouldn't wait until Sound had reached her new place and strode forward to embrace her. The pair glowed, and even as the council clapped, some of the masters were overcome by the urge to cheer along. Hunter merely clapped harder, for his mind was scattered across the past, present, and future, thinking of all they had accomplished, of feats yet to come, and of the celebration that once again was upon them.

It was good to have another ceremony at last.
But the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
— Paul the Apostle

Winter is inevitable. Spring will return eventually, and AstralHunter with it.

Captain's Challenge: A Mythical Journey
As Issued by Captain Magebird

Image

If you've ever read Homer's Odyssey , you know that treks through the open ocean rarely happen without running into some kind of mythical creature. It's part of the fun of the adventure! You never know what you'll accidentally run into doing your trek across the seven seas.

During our last adventure, however, we didn't run into anything especially mythical. The most extraordinary surprises during The Great YWS Treasure Hunt were the several-months early appearance of SantaYWS and LoonyMaroony.

So the obvious solution is to run into them in your own storybooks!

The challenge for this month is to include a reference to a mythical creature in your post. While your friendly neighborhood crew of pirates was thinking of creatures like dragons, mermaids, unicorns, griffins and fairies, you're free to mention whatever kind of creature comes to mind!

You also don't have to make the creature physically show up in the post. You can reference them in conversation and descriptions, too. A character could be reminiscing on their encounter with a mermaid. Another reference can be using dragons in a metaphor. A third reference can be two characters debating if fairies are better than unicorns - it's really up to you! As long as you link your post here and tell us what mythical creature you referenced, we'll give you credits.

The breakdown of points looks like this:

  • If you write one post that references a mythical creature, you get one credit.
  • If you write another post on top of that first one that also includes a reference, you'll get an additional two credits.
  • And if you write a third post that also references a mythical creature, you'll get an extra three credits

Overall, you can get up to six credits! The references can technically be from posts in the same storybook, but we'd definitely prefer if they were from multiple ones.

Happy writing, pirates, and good luck on this challenge!

"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."
-Mark Twain

Some were born warriors, others were born fearing them. But there is no divide any longer. You eight are the last hope for a village, for a nation, and for freedom. Take up arms and fight, in whatever way you know best. Show the world you were made to defend honor with your own.

You eight--Christopher John Cane, Ueda Shun’en, Jinpachi Watanabe, Pang Bu, Tamashiro Aiko, Haruko Honami, Tora Gozen, Wakaba--must show the chains of tyranny who you are. Introduce yourselves in 1,000 words or more and you shall be rewarded a point for your troubles. But you cannot fight alone. You need a friend or a loved one, or just the memories of one, to guide you through the battlefield. Another two points shall be gifted to you if you introduce a close companion of your characters, or through flashbacks introduce a companion who has since been lost to you.

But hurry! You have just two weeks to finish this. The fleet is approaching quickly, and they'll wait for no one. If you aren't prepared to fight as soon as they arrive, there is no future for Higashi Village.

Admittedly, Dungeon Master Hunter hadn't expected to hold yet another ceremony to welcome a new member into the Storied Council, but if Master @soundofmind had received one, how could Master @Omnom not? The celebration had been just as grand, and Master Sound had even offered to present Master Omnom with his Gold Shield herself, thereby reciprocating the honour he had extended to her! The sight had warmed everyone's hearts.

However, Hunter also increasingly felt the burdens of the world weighing down on him, and such, he hadn't been able to celebrate as long as once before. He was happy to reflect on the momentous occassion, as Master Omnom truly did deserve the accolade, but he was happier still to rest at his desk in his private quarters.

Dungeon Master Omnom, of course, would probably be doing no such thing. Knowing him, Master Hunter expected him to have engineered no fewer than three marvelous new schemes already — his mind was as busy as it was legendary.

Act I, Chapter 1
A Warm Welcome

Scenes xvi+

The Challenge

We've had a wonderful round of posts so far! Editor, newcomer Lezuli, and Buggie/Ventomology have all posted in the meantime, and while Editor claimed credits for the previous iteration of the challenge, Lezuli didn't know about the system yet and Buggie... is kind of indifferent like that. :smt042 Regardless, I'll award your credits restrospectively. To everyone else, let's continue! I'm clearly reposting the challenge, but we don't need to do a play-by-play — you're welcome to skip ahead in time if you want your character to be doing something else at a later in the day.

Credits Awarded

Completing any of the following objectives will earn you a credit, and if your post is longer than 750 words, you'll earn a bonus credit. If your post is longer than 3000 words, you'll earn another bonus credit for your efforts.

1. Our characters have already met loads of people, but come on — there are sixty-four of them in total. You can afford to have them meet two more! Note, these characters may be NPCs, and anyone will qualify as long as your character hasn't met them yet.

2. The Queen Anne is a thing of majesty, but it has something for every preference. Have your character describe a part of it we haven't seen before! (As of this challenge, the suites and the Commodore Club no longer qualify.)

3. Just seeing new sights is fun in itself, but what's more fun is engaging with these sights. It doesn't matter how plain or absurd your activity is, but if your character does something besides just talk and look around, it'll suffice.

Challenge Credits: 3
Bonus Credits: 2

Sunshower Over Hogsmeade

Challenged Adventurer(s): @AstralHunter @Carina @EditorAndPerks @ScarlettFire @SirenCymbaline @TheMulticoloredCyr @winterwolf0100

The Challenge:

It's the introductory round! Show me yo wonderful babies, and how they're doing. Spring has blossomed in 2005, so I've started a spring cleaning theme! Up to you how literally you take it. Maybe your character sorts out some old clutter in the literal sense, or maybe they simply reflect on the ways they've changed, or changes they want to make.

Credits Awarded:

-1 credit for posting
-2 credits for utilising the spring cleaning theme

That's a maximum of 3 points!

Good luck <3

PS: Yes, I've reposted Siren's challenge for those of us who've yet to post. Is this within my authority? Seeing as I have the Novice badge, yeah, it is. XD

Pilgrims' Plotlines

Death waits for no one, and eternity doesn't last forever, so why not try and make the most of this time to gain yourselves some glory and fame while you're living your best death (or serving your best semi-immortality ;-) )

This challenge will grant each of you a total of 4 possible points, which can be gained in the following way (you needn't complete all of them, of course)

- Include at least two paragraphs of interaction with another character (NPCs do not apply) Dialogue paragraphs do count, but should at least be something meaningful then (and not just "hey" "hello")

- Your post is at least 600 words long

- Use at least four of the five "normal" senses to describe something/place in the Hotel (it can be anything. The place is infinite, and grows with whatever you write into it). The senses don't have to apply to the same thing/place/person.

- The fourth point is if your post is over 1111 words

Captain’s Challenge: October Outrage

as written by searats the Patchwork Pilgrims

tenor.gif
tenor.gif (1.47 MiB) Viewed 1537 times

Ahoy there, we hearties! The crew has finally decided to let these here pilgrims out of the closet we had been stuffed in, and released our power back into the world (not much of it, but still). We have been away for so long, that the joy of being back this last month has been a blessing for us (thanks to ye searats). So, to celebrate our return, we thought the best way would be to herald in this month’s Captain’s Challenge!

As everyone probably knows (and if you’ve been stuck in a timeloop until now: surprise!) we’ve made it to October. That’s into the final quarter of the year, and into the month with our second favourite type of full moon, the Harvest Moon. This month is also home to a holiday known around the world. You’ve heard the name, you know the drill...

Octoberfest of course! (we were told to subvert expectations. We’re subverting!) Now, before y’all come running after us with pitchforks and torches like a medieval mob after a potential weregoat, let us finish our intro. We’re not going to make a Captain’s Challenge based on alcohol and German folksongs (though that might be interesting too), but rather on the idea behind Octoberfest, and, completely definitely not coincidentally Halloween. Because you see, while they may seem so different from one another, both Octoberfest and Halloween find their roots in being a harvest festival, only the one with booze, and the other boos ;-) While the idea behind Octoberfest is to celebrate the hardwork of the year that went into maintaining and harvesting the crops, Halloween was originally about preparing for and defending the harvest from any potential thing going wrong (like the spirits of the dead coming alive and messing with the crops)

This month’s Captain Challenge will play on the core of what a harvest festival is: celebrating the results of your characters’ hardwork, and trying your best to make sure it doesn’t go to waste. The challenge will have two main components (and a one minor one), which will be explained down below.

Work hard, play hard ~ The first part of this month’s Captain’s Challenge will involve your characters working hard for something, whether that be disarming an antimatter bomb, stopping a mass extinction, or just making sure their/someone’s life is just slightly less terrible. Whatever the task, your characters must work for it (it must feel like an achievement when they’ve finished, so just having your characters struggle to make a ham and cheese sandwich won’t count. Unless they’re the size of an ant, or the ham and cheese have become alive and run away).
After achieving their goal (preferably with the help of their fellow characters), show the world that your character can unwind and enjoy themselves once in a while. After all, everyone needs a break from saving the world or further a plot of a story they find themselves in, even Storybook characters. You will get three points for your characters achieving their goals, and for having them celebrate this achievement afterwards (plus one potential bonus point if the celebration includes at least two other user characters)

Be careful what you witch for ~ The second part of the Challenge takes inspiration from the famous Murphy’s Law (or Sod’s Law, if you’re British), showing that everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. For this component, your characters will need to be prepared (insert Scar and his hyena army here) for every eventuality of something going wrong, and either succeeding or failing at stopping the bad things from happening. Bonus points if the “bad” things that go wrong actually seem to be spontaneous/out-of-nowhere/magical/divine (basically a reverse deus ex machina, if you will) You will get two points for having your character preparing for the worst, and then showing whether their preparations succeed or fail (plus one bonus point if the bad things actually seem to happen spontaneously/out of nowhere)

Fear, far, wherever you aaargh! ~ The third, minor component of this Challenge is to show your characters fears. These may range from self-doubt that they’ll lose all of the hardwork they had just accomplished, to the ghost of their deceased uncle thrice-removed coming back to haunt them, to a witch turning them into a pinata. Since even with hardwork, celebration, preparation and achievement, fear is always lurking, waiting to strike. Showing fear in whatever shape or form will net you one point.

Here follows how the point allocations summarized:
-Three points for having your character put in hard work/effort to achieve a meaningful goal/reward, and then celebrating their goal/reward after achieving it.
-Two points for having your character prepare for every possibility/thing that could go wrong, and then showing their preparations either succeed or fail.
-One point for showing your character experience one of the greater fears
-One bonus point for having your celebration involve at least two other characters, and another bonus point for having them experience a more... supernatural form of Murphy’s Law.

This brings the total points available in this Challenge up to seven points in total.

Think your characters have what it takes to work hard, and face their fears? Well, then go out and harvest some points for yerselves, searats and landlubbers! :D May you persevere through whatever can (and will) go wrong ;-)

This Challenge expires on the 4th of November 2020
