Direction

In Poetry

Have I sacrificed forever
For right now

Made assumptions of a calling
When it could just be temptation

Leaving a community and serving
In the dust

Picking up a paycheck and exhaustion
Just the same

Met with challenges
Am I giving up

in this season what's the lesson
Flesh VS faith

When will flesh not win
Where's my direction now?

---Trials in following what could be your calling in Christ---

From what I know, this is the battle modern Christians are suffering. You depicted it well.

Obstacles block people from their faith, some stanzas in your poem being a literal perception of that. The "calling in Christ" can be silenced in the everyday trials of life.

(I agree with @Radrook in the fact that you might want some question marks after certain lines, especially "Am I giving up".)

For a sense of "lost-ness", as I'm sensing now, you could probably add in more mystery to your lines. I'm not a poetry specialist, but one way to do so would be using some symbolism. (I haven't read too many of your pieces, forgive me if I'm wrong!)

"Direction" spoke to me in a way, and will speak to many people, whether they believe in Christ or not. Keep it up.

Thank you!

Radrook here for a review. Please feel free to ignore any advice that you deem unhelpful.

Thanks for sharing this poem concerning the spiritual struggle that a every person who wants to live a Christian life faces in this wicked world. I like introspective questioning format by which the speaker seems to be examining the genuineness of his own motives based on previous experiences that have taught him that motives might very well turn out to be the lust of the flesh in disguise. The speaker seems to feel that the flesh is winning in his struggle to be a Christian. It illustrates a biblical concept that we cannot trust the heart which is the seat of motivation, because in our fallen condition, the heart is treacherous.

Jeremiah 17:9 NIV
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

It very well might convince us that our motives are noble when in reality we are seeking the gratification of the flesh. Of course the concern itself is a testament to the speaker’s sincerity in wanting to remain on the narrow road to salvation and avoid the hypocrisy which some persons display by saying that they are Christians while behaving like and pleasing the god of this world Satan.

Suggestions:

The poem is composed of questions involving doubts concerning motives.
Because it is, it requires the repeated use of the question mark.

I also find it flows better for me as a reader without the traditional capitalization. Below is an example of how I would have punctuated it.

Have I sacrificed forever
[f]or right now[?]

Made assumptions of a calling
[w]hen it could just be temptation[?]

Leaving a community and serving
[i]n the dust[?]

Picking up a paycheck and exhaustion
[j]ust the same[?]

Met with challenges[,]
[a]m I giving up[?]

[I]n this season[,] what's the lesson[,]
[f]lesh VS faith[?]

When will flesh not win[?]
Where's my direction now?

I assumed that the following isn't part of the poem.
---Trials in following what could be your calling in Christ---

Keep up the good work and looking forward to reading more of your poems.

Thank you so much!!!

Hello!

ShaikhTheWorld here, writing a short novice review for your poem.

I feel you got your intended message and atmosphere across through the poem quite well. Which direction you intend to take your poem is ultimately up to the author itself, but a few simple suggestions come to mind.

a) On the first stanza, you might want to add a '?' after "For right now" - to match the last stanza's '?' mark, for a more organized effect.

b) "Am I giving up" - this could also use a '?' mark for the aforementioned reason, yes?

c) I feel capitalization of 'Faith' in the 5th stanza, and Flesh in the fourth stanza, would ultimately make a stronger impact on your readers.

That would be it for my first review ever with this account on YWS!

In conclusion, I like the content and message of your poem, but believe it could do with more punctuation tricks and fleshing out.

Hope this helps.
Thank you for reading, and have a good day! :D

Such an awesome novice review! You're on to great things! Thanks for taking the time to go through it. I only put a question mark at the end because I want the poem as a whole to be one question. kind of like an internal monologue. Once again, Thanks a bunch!

I realized that I forgot to give a 'Like' to your work, my bad. :P

This was my first review on the site with this account, so thank you for being so cool about it. :3

And, wow, knowing that the entire poem was one big question gives me the goosebumps - well done! :D
