I Am Not The Third Wheel

In Random thoughts

i’m not the third wheel.

i can still smell his fresh, strong scent
as it wavers throughout my body -
the scent of his recently washed strands of hair,
as i brush my fingertips across them.

i’m not the third.

i can still taste his softening stare, as i
drown in his presence and give myself up,
his heart and mine burning in the same rhythm,
our hands electrifying and distance petrifying.

he whispered i love you, but in my mind it was otherwise –
i love you (both).

i’m not.

i can still hear his voice, hoarse and puberty-ridden,
as he calls out my name, every syllable a butterfly.

i can still do all these things,
i can still touch him without flinching,

but my eyes could never see
the tears they gave up when he
glanced at a pretty figure,
me walking away with a smile as if nothing
had happened.

i am.

This poetry is really heart warming because of its end. It the beginning I really felt the sadness of this work but in the end I feel like you are the one winning this endless battle. Being the third wheel is never a good position and I can totally understand it even if honestly I was not in this situation. You describe it good enough to let me feel like I was on the place of the one being third and the one being unneeded in this triangle. To be honest I have no complain. You had started in one style and punctuation style and you had ended with it. So goof job and keep on writing.
Beautiful work even if it is connected with a rather sad matter.

Thank you for your review!

Greetings, Hunter!

I found myself widely smiling as I ended reading the poem (that's because I can well understand your feeling). I know what thoughts you had in your mind and over-all you have well presented them.

The first stanza itself caught my attention, it is eye-catching and well-described:
i can still smell his fresh, strong scent
as it wavers throughout my body -
the scent of his recently washed strands of hair,
as i brush my fingertips across them.

I liked the way you used the capitalization scheme amazingly. I always had a liking for free verse poems as it allows you write without any disruptions, without any effort to rhyme. It is soothing to read and you find better words while writing it in a free verse.

"i can still taste his softening stare, as i
drown in his presence and give myself up,
his heart and mine burning in the same rhythm,"---- These lines were abrupt to me, I mean it seems well but I wish you could reword it.

The lines: "our hands electrifying and distance petrifying.

he whispered i love you, but in my mind it was otherwise –
i love you (both)." portray a deep meaning and that you have managed to write well. Though you could add something more to it.

The last lines simply took my heart away:
"but my eyes could never see
the tears they gave up when he
glanced at a pretty figure,
me walking away with a smile as if nothing
had happened."

Though I had a question: Why *i am* is mentioned at the end? What does it suggest?

You realize that every other time in the poem the statement I am not the third wheel gets repeated, but gets lesser and lesser? Like, I am not the third wheel, and then it becomes I am not the third, and then I am not, afterwards, I am. Meaning: the narrator has somehow accepted that she is, based on the facts that have been presented.

Anyways, thank you for your lovely review!

Hey there!
frankly speaking i did not understand half of this poem (but i guess thats my fault) but the other half i understood...it was pretty interesting.
1.TITLE
i do not understand why you gave your work the tittle "the third wheel" plz explain! caz as far as i understood the poem... it deals with a girl talkig about a guy she likes...

2. MEANING
Well as i said before i do not understand half of it...though i like what i understood... but it would be really good if you would explain it a little bit... or maybe make it a bit clearer in the poem itself?!

4.FLOW
I like the flow of your poem... i some places it just rolls of my tongue pretty smoothly...and thats is something i look while reading free verse poems...

5.CAPITALISATION
*sigh* i guess i keep telling you this ... but seriously use some capitalisation! it looks better !

i guess thats all i can say about your poem... but it would be good if you explaoned the third wheel part and oh i almost forgot to tell you i like the way you framed the second stanza... that was really beautiful!

keep writing!

The term third wheel is a corruption of fifth wheel, which refers to someone who deters the socialization of a couple, perhaps when being invited out of pity or through a feeling of duty. *searched in google*

About capitalization, it's my preference though. I don't think I should use the standard. It's my art style xD Sorry if I annoyed you, but that's just how I like my poems. Free xD

nah! thats cool... and *blinks* i got the meaning of third wheel yay!
