A/N: So, I wrote this part without a real goal in mind, and it just kind of came out this way, not to mention that it was thirty minutes until the deadline, so I'm really worried about the focus in this case, and if all of the actions/thoughts/conclusions are actually logical. It could very well be that they're not.
Qui felt fire run scald her veins, and she knew her hands would be trembling if they weren’t firmly on the desk.
“Now,” Obi was saying calmly as he picked up a ledger, studying the lines of numbers written. “While I would normally never meddle with a man or woman’s business I was paying them for, I reserve the right to slip Lekan lessons of my own. I’m sure you’re doing just fine in the few days you have, but a double lesson would never hurt.” He reached for spectacles she hadn’t noticed and balanced them on the bridge of his nose, taking up a fountain pen.
Her anger was mute as she stared at him, unable to comprehend that he was dismissing her. No one dismissed her. If anything, she was to storm out of her own accord. Her hand moved before she could comprehend what she had ordered it to do.
Obi’s glasses flew to the floor as his head jerked to the side under the force of her hand. When he slowly faced her again, she could see her hand print against his dark skin.
Silent, Obi stood, unfolding himself until he towered over her.
Somehow, she had forgotten how large he was compared to her. While his bone structure was thin, he was muscled and very tall. Unwilling to back down now, especially when she had asked for it, she glared up at him, her veil ruining the effect in this instance. If he could have been victim to it, he would have been frozen. “I am your employee, not your servant. You will speak to me like you would any equal.” She locked her knees when she felt them tremble at his dark stare. This time, she had made a mistake.
“Miss Taliop,” he hissed, “You now have my full attention. What silly arguments do you have to bother me with?” The cold condescension dripping off of his words in place of the fury lurking in the tightness of his jaw and the stiffness of his arms as he carefully folded them close against his chest.
Her pride kept her from ducking her head, and her stubbornness kept her from backing down. “What if your techniques and mine conflict with each other?” she demanded. “Then Lekan would only be confused.”
A cold half smile lurking on his lips, he drawled, “I’m touched by your concern for my nephew, Miss Taliop.”
The way he refused to call her Qui’in as he had just a few moment ago made her nervous. People didn’t change their behavior unless they had a reason, and she thought Obi might be mocking her, giving her the respect a proper woman deserved through her title.
“I am!” she cried before she could stop herself. “I think Lekan is young and bright and stupid. He’s too stupid to trust because he never uses common sense and is always making stupid mistakes, and he’s too smart to give up on because he’s got the potential to learn from everything he’s done. Someday, he’ll be great. It’s a crime to try to end his life before he gets a chance to live it.”
Blinking, Obi’s face thawed, and he turned away, the green linen clothes he wore for casual encounters rustling as he linked his hands behind his back. Looking out the window, he said, his voice so much softer than the icy words he’d thrown at her, “I was very much like him when I was a boy. Sometimes I wonder how my brother could make someone so different from himself. My brother was shy and quiet. He didn’t have to learn how to keep secrets like I did. He was… is a secret to me. He didn’t do well in crowds, but he was so smart and I loved him as a child. I worshipped him. Even when I discovered that, yes, I fed off of people and impacting them and allowing them to impact me, I sought to be more like him. I just never understood him.
“I think he hated not being able to talk to people, and he saw in Lekan fearlessness.” He laughed. “The boy just needs a good shot of terror, really.” Clearing his throat, he faced her slowly, his eyes far away, and continued. “I think he was afraid to harness Lekan’s courage, and it grew wild. Anything unpruned is useless.” He shook his head slowly as if to clear his head, waving his hand as if dismissing what he had just said, and when his eyes fell on her veil again, they were bright instead of hazy. “What I meant to say through all of that hogwash is that I understand Lekan. I grew up, and I’ll admit, in my old age, I’ve stumbled across a disdain for large groups of people, but I remember how it was. I hired you for help. Surely you understand, to demand that I not try to give what I can to help Lekan survive as well is callous.”
Qui felt his embarrassment through his cool façade. He had just opened himself up and given her a tour of his private thoughts. She was almost embarrassed for him. “If you understand him,” she murmured, tilting her head, “why can’t you teach him?”
Smiling wryly, he picked up a decanter from a cabinet beside the window and poured two glasses of bourbon. “I wouldn’t dare tell Lekan I related with him. Not to mention, the boy is twenty six. When I was twenty six, I was shooting at men and getting shot at. He’s too old to be acting as he does, and we’ve gotten into enough arguments that I know I can’t tell him much without having it rejected.” He slid one glass across the desk and sipped at the other, sitting down again. Leaning back, he seemed strangely at peace. “I can trick him into learning things though, and I’d like to continue doing so.” The tilt of his eyebrows was mocking, but it was a kind mocking instead of the cold words sharpened to wound. “If you don’t mind?”

Heya sugar, back here for another review on this review day. After concluding which novel/chapter I should do next, I always keep on coming back to your awesome novel! <3
This happens to me all the time, that my hand flies somewhere without me even really thinking about it, although I am obviously controlling it. And I felt really confused after the end of this sentence: What did she do? I don’t think that you really mentioned that later on in the text, but I think that it’s an important detail that I am just curious about anyways.
I don’t understand why Qui is saying this, because no one is committing a crime here(and noone is on purpose ending his life-really). Lekan is already living his life, from since he was born actually. So many I am interpreting it wrong, but I don’t know about this sentence.
The problem is, that Obi probably can’t treat her like an equal, since she is a whore and in lower society. So I see why it would be very difficult for Obi to view her as an equal, because he just wasn't taught this way.
Umm, ok so that is what Obi did. After his brother died, how did he feel about it? Did he mourn him, wail loudly in the temples, what did he do during that hard time? I just want to know(maybe he is still wearing black) unless this happened some time ago.
Umm, I don’t know how you can feel embarrassed for someone else? I don’t think that Qui shows that much emotions to do this anyways. Plus she just got some very valuable information, and so she should be glad and use this to further teaching Lekan some useful things, right? Now that she knows more about him?
Lekan has trust issues? Well I did notice that with Obi that he doesn’t really trust his uncle, especially since he is now supposing that his uncle is after his mother and his money and estate. If Lekan does in fact have some major trust issues, then why did he trust Qui so easily in this whole novel? Doesn’t he have to like check her out a bit more, before he just allows her to teach him all of the spy strategies?
Anyways, that's it from me. (all I could think of for this lovely-quick written chapter.) I appreciate that you can rush-write and still make something beautiful, because that is something that every author should have. I hope that these points help in any way.
~Peace Out~

Hi there!
I like this. Even though it's chapter 14, we're still learning about your characters, which is what any good writer does. And what I love about this is that there's now a reason for what she does. Just saying that she held his gaze and stood her ground is great, but knowing why she does it is even better. It makes me feel like I really, truly know her. That I knew it was her pride that kept her staring at him. Now in the future, I'll be more inclined to find those places where her pride comes out.
You know, I never really noticed it before, but Obi and Qui are very similar people. They both have jobs that they need to get done and they'd both stop at nothing to get it done. They both have that stubbornness in them that makes them go off at any time, much like Qui did here. And I think that's why she did go off on him like that. It was the last straw for her. Her pride got the best of her.
I find myself reading through these chapters, wanting so desperately to know all of Qui's secrets. She's by far my favorite character (well, okay, Obi is a super close second) so obviously I want to know everything about her. But she has those stupid secrets that she refuses to share! I can't wait for the chapter when we learn all about her. It was nice seeing that flashback to when she was little and traveling around with her mother. That gave us some insight on why her job is what it is. Although it does spark the question, if she hated what her mother did, why is she now doing the same job?? Great, another mystery about her life... I like it; it keeps me reading. And I think it works great that she's this mysterious.
Onto the next chapter!
Keep writing!

Hello there, megs!

.
.

.
. Nervous ticks...
Great chapter you have here. I haven't read the previous, but oh well, it's still great!
Nitpicks first
Qui felt fire run scald her veins, and she knew her hands would be trembling if they weren’t firmly on the desk.
Unusual... tabbing you've got there..... indentation?
“While I would normally never meddle with a man or woman’s business I was paying them for, I reserve the right to slip Lekan lessons of my own.
I was paying them for? Not only is that - I think- a run on, it also makes no sense to me. Sorry
He was… is a secret to me.
Try a hyphen instead of periods there... I believe it'll read better
Even when I discovered that, yes, I fed off of people and impacting them and allowing them to impact me, I sought to be more like him.
Confusing sentence you've got there. It's mostly the second half, when you start talking about impacts... try this, maybe:
Even when I discovered that, yes, I fed off of people and impacted them and allowed them to impact me, I sought to be more like him.
It still needs quite a bit of work, but at least your tenses are correct now!
“I think he hated not being able to talk to people, and he saw in Lekan fearlessness.”
Fearlessness in Lekan, not in Lekan fearlessness.
Surely you understand, to demand that I not try to give what I can to help Lekan survive as well is callous.”
That sentence is a run-on as is, or a comma splice, or both.
Surely you understand, that to demand that I not try to give what I can to help Lekan survive, is cruel as well is callous.”
The phrase inside the commas is still confusing, and feel free to replace cruel with another adjective.
The tilt of his eyebrows was mocking, but it was a kind mocking instead of the cold words sharpened to wound. “If you don’t mind?”
Sharpened to wound? Mmm... no, meant to wound, or thrown to wound. Sharpening something doesn't hurt anyone until they impale themselves upon it
Right, that's the end of nitpicks.
I like this- a lot. The pacing is nice, and Qui is great. Hilariously great.
When Obi reveal himself, however, Id take it slower or make it seem like he's rambling. Anyone should be nervous/embarrassed to empty themselves out like that- and people aren't exactly... eloquent... when nervous, y'know?
Good characterization. I'd like to see more of the office; more imagery wouldn't hurt.
Also, you could mention Obi pacing; I doubt he's standing completely still
Great job overall, darling.
Keep persisting, love.

Hi Megusg!
Sorry I am running so late! Been busy doing crazy things, and life is being busy >.> All pathetico reasons but I am here now! Let me give the little help I can. This chapter is already too fantastic on its own!
Seeing Qui and Obi talk together is always so interesting. What they do and the way they act, as well as the things they feel intrigues me. When you have to people who play the same game, it's always fun to see who is going to win. I feel like neither did, because in some cases Qui made a fool of herself, but then Obi fessed up to some things he didn't really want to share. Even though he did make a quick recovery about it.
I was a little confused when it came to the story of his brother. I mean, his brother probably was what, how far from Obi's age? Probably older because Obi looked up to him. But then you mention how Obi's brother was always looking at Lekan's easygoing-ness which confused me because how would he have become Lekan's friend when they are so far in age and all? I didn't get who was looking up to Lekan and how it related to Obi and his brother. Maybe you just mean Obi looked up to his brother the whole time? Either way, I am confused and I think even if it's just me, that point could use a little bit of clarifying...
Oh, another thing I noticed that is throughout this whole conversation, their emotions go so fast. In this chapter alone Qui goes from feeling sheepish and out of her depth, to flaming angry, to regretting it, to embarrassed for Obi, to satisfied with how things are going. Yes, I don't mind all that and I can understand everything happening to provoke those emotions. But I feel like the build up and occurrences need to go slower some how, because reflecting on this chapter everything seems to be going so quickly and her emotions are seeming bipolar to me. xD
Hm, you need to cut a word here. You could cut the word run and it would make sense. Or you could cut scald and replace it with 'through'. Your call
I think you mean Lekan's.
Other than those two little points and those two nitpicks, there isn't much here I can mention. A brilliant chapter as always! Keep up this amazing work
