Its Hard to Say Goodbye

Its hard to say goodbye,
To say goodbye to a child in need,
Or in pain.

Its hard to say goodbye to a loved one,
when all you want to do,
is scream on the inside.

To see friends and families piled together after the war,
To see a mother weep after her dying child,
To watch someone drown,
And you cant help them.

To see angels sitting on your childs bedside,
Taking them away,
To a safer place.

To leave a house,
An instrument inside,
Yearning to be played,
And yet know one comes to its aid.

Its hard to say goodbye,
To a mother you never had,
To family you only dreamed of,
To have a friend you only thought of.

To see your Grandpa's hand reach out to you,
With their final strenght,
The life seeping away from their fingertips.

The innocent children,
Slaughtered,
Tortured and mauled,
Leaving a weeping mother,
Who was screaming on the inside.

Its hard to say goodbye,
to a dear friend you had to bury,
To think of him everyday.

To watch young ones in love,
After your love has died with your lover.

To watch their death reflected into your eyes,
Tainting your memory forever.

Its hard to say Goodbye.

Hard to say goodbye to things you treasured.

Eveything that can be said goodbye to,
Has left them behind,
Or has been left behind,
Stains us,
Burning a mark into our heads,
Leaving us with a sadness,
Stretching to the widthe of our soul.

Its hard to say goodbye.

This poem has a strong theme that's definitely worth exploring and there are some solid images. However, it is currently too repetitive and generalized, making it less interesting.

First, I'll point out a good verse:

To leave a house,
An instrument inside,
Yearning to be played,
And yet know one comes to its aid

Aside from the typo ("know" should be "no"), this is the best verse of the poem. It shows the sadness of losing someone without outright saying it. You could build on it further as well: What instrument? Who played it? Why does no one else play it?

The rest of the poem falls into two traps: repetition and lack of focus. Repetition can help a poem but here it falls flat because it emphasizes weak points of the poem ("To...", "It's hard to say goodbye"). The piece also feels impersonal because it touches on so many themes (war, children dying, family deaths, lovers, disease, etc.). It might be better to focus on one scenario and flesh it out. For example, you could think of someone in your life and imagine if they died. What images come to mind when you think of him/her? These images could show the reader a unique perspective on death and grief, like the instrument imagery.

Overall, I think there's potential to this poem, but it would be improved with more unique images and more focused message.

Quotegenworthy is a adjective which should be used on YWS way more.
