Warning: This work has been rated 16+ for mature content.

It takes one second,

one moment,

for everything to change.

For a heartbeat to stop,

at the mention of four simple words.

“Do you cut yourself?”

Those who know this feeling,

they know about the lump in their throat.

The fact it will be any moment your secret is revealed.

And everything will change.

And if you’re the person asking,

Everything changes too.

The image of this whole person

becomes shattered and new.

And some will decide to stay, if they’re strong enough.

others, they will leave before you infect them.

It’s a disease.

It eats you away and gnaws at your mind and heart.

Some say it’s a choice.

Those who have done it know very well it’s not.

There is little that stops the habit.

Except for sometimes,

It only takes a moment,

and one person,

who you know isn’t lying,

to say they will be there.

I like the way you embraced this topic. It wasn't overwhelming or too suffocatingly depressing as they often are, but managed to feel informative yet still personal.

I am happy to say that I have been that one person for a friend, who was always around when needed, even if she said she didn't need, or want, me. It captures all the issues we were facing then. It made me sad to see everyone she care about either leave her because of it, or ignore the issue. Your poem conveys this issue perfectly, and exquisitely.

One critique/ offer of advice though.

"Everything changes too.

The image of this whole person

becomes shattered and new. "

I don't think new is the best choice of wording here. It feels positive, which feels like a huge contrast from the use of shattered. Maybe a word that has a negative connotation, but means the same thing?

Hello! Me here to review
I am going to open with a criticism, because it is the only one I have.
‘It takes one second,
one moment,’ – These opening lines are very cliché.
“Do you cut yourself?” – I like the fact this sounds more like a rhetorical question in the work, as if the reader and the person asking the question already know the answer.
‘It’s a disease.’ – This line I short but effective, and also in its way, true. I love this line.
‘Some say it’s a choice.
Those who have done it know very well it’s not.’ – also in love with this in virtue of meaning, however, I feel because of the length of the lines you are beginning to lose structural style and rhythm a little here.
‘to say they will be there.’ – As for the ending, I was expecting more of a twist as you had promised, I thought this was rather standard. However, I still really liked it. I think you did a good job here, connecting with a sensitive and issue and handling it with the proper care and attention it deserves.
An enjoyable read. Well done. 

I am not very experienced in this sort of thing. The habit of cutting oneself isn't very prevalent in the society I belong from. Still, I myself am a binge eater and when I get sad, depressed or lonely, I just want to eat something and at that time I just can see reasoning. I tried to chew gum but that didn't help. I am trying to fast on alternate days and it seems to be helping.

A poem beautifully written. There is nothing I see that needs improving.

This poem is very powerful. It holds strong emotions within it's words. It is a good poem, one that I think that describes how someone who cuts would feel. This is a good emotional poem- in which sometimes it can be better or worse, but this time it is for the best. Getting hooked into the poem with the the first few lines, the poem caught my attention as I went through the rest of it. This is the first thing that I have actually read today (at six in the morning), and I felt obligated to give you this touching review. From what I saw nothing needs to be fixed- it is all perfectly placed. Good job writing this poem, can't wait to read more.
