Definitely Not the Right Place at the Wrong Time

by acm

It has always made me wonder when I heard the phrase, 'at the wrong place at the wrong time'. I understand what it means: A person was at a certain place at a certain time when something bad happened, but he or she actually had nothing to do with it. It was just a coincidence that they were right there, right then, meaning that the person was at the wrong place at the wrong time, right?

But what I don't understand is how a place can be right or wrong. How could you be at the wrong place at the right time? Say someone through a rock through your window and you were under it one hour before the rock was thrown. You were at the wrong place, but what makes that place so wrong if nothing has happened yet? Now that I'm thinking about it, what makes that time so right? Nothing good is happening and nothing bad is either, so it's more like you are standing there at the normal place at the normal time an hour before at the scene of the crime (wow, that rhymes).

Now, let's say you were at the right place at the wrong time. What's so wrong about the time if you're in the right place? If you were at the grocery store when the stone was thrown at your window, then the word wrong wouldn't be in you description of the store.

So basically, having the wrong time makes the place wrong, and having the wrong place makes the time wrong, but by saying that the place is wrong, you're implying that the time is wrong too because the place wouldn't even be wrong without the time being so too.

Just a thought.

hey,

spectator here to review your poem since it's review day after all!

first off, i wouldn't call this poetry, although if you want it to be i think that the ideas in this work could make an interesting poem. you would just have to format it differently, create a distinct rhythm and maybe add some poetic devices? a little imagery? metaphor maybe? i would classify this as a "random blurb" or "stream of consciousness writing". however, i don't believe those categories exists, so maybe it could fall into article, essay, or simply 'other' category.

now, let's dive into the work itself...

this was an interesting and enjoyable piece of writing to read. however, there are a few things i would considering looking over again/making changes to.

1) your first sentence is fairly unclear

"It has always made me wonder when I heard the phrase, 'at the wrong place at the wrong time'."

you don't describe to readers what you're wondering. this is a simple fix. maybe changes this line to something like "i have always wondered (blank) about this (phrase)" "i have always been confused about the meaning of "phrase"

2) i'm not entirely sure what the point of the first paragraph is? it basically restates what the phrase "wrong place, wrong time" says a lot of words. i think it would be interesting to dig a little deeper into what this phrase means to you. get a little more personal! maybe relay a story of when you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. in addition, this will help captivate your readers.

3) i would get rid of the phrase "wow, that rhymes" this is almost like breaking the 4th wall and it makes the tone of this piece seem too colloquial! the same thing goes for the phrase "Just a thought."

4) it seems to me the main point of this piece is exactly what the phrase "wrong place, wrong time" implies; both place and time have to be wrong in tangent with each other. again, dig a little deeper! how/why do humans define right and wrong? are little things people consider 'wrong' actually so terrible in the grand scheme of things? relay your own personal experience with this phrase/why it's important to you.

now, here's a few things i enjoyed about this piece...

1) i like writing where people take a common phrase and give it a 'twist' - this is what you did in this piece!

2) i think it's cool that this is just a collection of thoughts and not a big deal piece of writing! sometimes work comes across as insincere when it is too over the top and your writing did not do this at all!

overall, amazing work! keep writing and happy review day!

You being so young you think about things a lot! When I was 11 I was thinking about nail polish and my crush. You have a very interesting mind, you search for answers which is what starts to happen when you get older. Start young is good you can find more answers because you have a longer time to wonder. You had me second guessing every little saying that people just seem to say without thinking. I just started writing and even though I am older in age you seem to be ahead of me in writing age. I hope to be able to write my wondering thoughts just like you have and I can't wait to read more of your work. Keep wondering, keep asking, keep writing. <3
