Story of A Life

In Poetry and Lyrics

The edges are crisp and clean,

And the corners straight, without flaw.

During those long years, before it was found,

Only the dust of time settled on the cover.

No stain or blemish found its way to the pages,

Because they were hidden away from all eyes.

The book sits on the narrow shelf alongside others,

Each bearing a different title,

And each holding a different story.

So many unopened books lie in wait,

In expectation for someone to come.

A hand is run along the leather binding,

Feeling the smooth paper edges.

Touching the pages softly. Hesitantly.

Wondering if it should be opened.

A soft creak is emitted from the book,

And it is slowly opened,

Dust drifting from the cover onto the floor.

Shy eyes read the first few words,

And sees printed in bold letters for all to read.

Hai Timmy,

Well, this was a nice poem. I took it to be showing us how each book is a different story. A story that follows someone's life and how it can suck us into it and take us on to a different world. I though you brought that across really well, and I loved the last stanza where we have someone opening the book. Almost nervous to read but then still going for it, entering in to this person's life. I thought that really just managed to show what a reader and reading is like.

At the end of the third stanza, I feel like you use two lines to repeat what is already said in the last one - about the reader being hesitant to start. Which seems a bit unnecessary reading it now. And the other lines in the third stanza also seem to echo what has already been said in the first, where the form is being described, and again seems a bit unneeded. My suggestion would be to remove that stanza all together?

I like the second one where you almost personify the book, making it seem like it's waiting for someone to just come and pick it up, sitting amongst its friends. It was a nice image to have ^.^

One thing that would've been nice would be to play on the imagery a bit more. Maybe add in a stanza where you mention the different types of stanzas you could get. From dragons battling in the sky, to children killing children in arenas (>.>) and princes chasing after princess or something. Just have a bit of a play on what stories their could be to come inside the book that is patiently waiting there!

I don't have much more to say. When it comes to individual lines and being nitpicky here, you've kind of written it too well for that. I hope this advice helps. ;)

Deanie x

Thanks for the revieewwww, Livvy! :D

Hey Tiny Tim! The majestic icicles here to review your poem!
I really enjoyed reading this poem! I loved the imagery and creative phrases in it which make up the best of it!
My favourite lines were:

Touching the pages softly. Hesitantly.

Wondering if it should be opened.

and
Shy eyes read the first few words,

And sees printed in bold letters for all to read.

Because it really shows how I think everyone feels when they open a book or consider to do it and after re-reading it, a persons life.
I also like the hidden meaning of it that you have to re-read to uncover, this book describes a persons life. The second stanza really shows that very well! I kind of feel stupid I didn't get that first time round!
Honestly timmy I couldn't find much wrong with this! Just wow!

Thank you for the wonderful review! Go Icicles!!

I absolutely adore this poem. How we are books and stories hidden from the others was very descriptive and relatable with excellent imagery. All of us only know as much as we are exposed to! I completely understood how people could be damaged and in anticipation to open up to someone else. This was just beautiful to read. Also, it's almost a paradox at the end! Having the reader read a poem called "The Story of A Life" and then describe someone reading the title to be the same is confusing but also makes me think. I just love this. Keep up the awesome work!

thank you! :D

Hey, good job with your poem. I thought, when I read the title, that it would be either really bad or really sappy. Luckily for all of us it was neither sappy nor bad. It was however deep, and refreshing. The metaphor of a book to a life was very new, pleasant and different. I personally enjoyed the slight break in the line of the last stanza, but most people don't.

Wondering if it should be opened.

Wondering if it should be begun.

Alright good job with the repetition, this effect can create a soothing feeling and can be used to change the pace in a poem.

Question is this poem romantic, at the end I kinda got that sense...

Anyway, overall really good job. Keep writing!

thanks for your review!!

I didn't mean it as romantic, but almost in a way... spiritual. Read it over and see what I mean. As a Christian, I believe in God. So God knows what our life is going to be like before it begins. And I see it as his hand opening the book. You can see it however you like, though. I left it open that way for your imagination to fill in the blanks! Thanks again for your review!!

Okay, now I get it. I wasn't sure where you were going with it, but it makes sense now. Thank you

hey there timmijake , i'm here to review your amazing work
first off , i just wanna say that i liked the idea of the poem it's very good and interesting
honestly didn't expect this poem as i read the title , and it's not a bad thing because i found something more enjoyable than what i expect from the title.

"A hand is run along the leather binding,
Feeling the smooth paper edges.
Touching the pages softly. Hesitantly.
Wondering if it should be opened.
Wondering if it should be begun."

in this part , what i didn't like is the last line it kinda breaks the flow and didn't go well with the rest of the part .

my favourite part :

"The edges are crisp and clean,
And the corners straight, without flaw.
During those long years, before it was found,
Only the dust of time settled on the cover.
No stain or blemish found its way to the pages,
Because they were hidden away from all eyes."

yes yes the whole starting , it's just amazing the descriptions the imagery and the rhythm *per-fect* plus this part "A soft creak is emitted from the book,"
i know i wasn't that "helpful" ( i feel so bad cause your reviews on my works are great )
i have to say that this is your best and well written poem until now , can't wait to read more
keep up the good work
see you around :)

thanks for your review!!
