Just Another Bad Dream

In Poetry

I hear the soft pitter-patter
Of raindrops softly tapping the window
As I lay my head down gently on the pillow
The wind whistles softly outside
Singing me to sleep

But I am jerked suddenly awake
Sitting straight up in my bed
Listening alertly at what lied ahead
I heard a loud screech
As a tree branch brushes against the window

I scan the area for signs of danger
But all noise has ceased
Except for the heavy breathing my lungs released
And the rapid thump thump
of my own pounding heart

It was just a dream
I reminded myself and sighed
As the pounding of my heart began to subside
The pitter-patter of rain faded to a distant drip drip
As everything returned to normal and I soon was off in a deep peaceful sleep
