Dear Mary

by Casanova

I just wanted to

Write this letter

In hopes I might be able to say somethin'

That might get through to you

Do you know the slump that you put us in?

We scratch and claw to get over this hump but it draws us back in

We're fightin' for a love that's truly ours yet you can't see it

I'm not meanin' any disrespect but you're rejectin' our opinions as if we're trash to you

Do you not love her? Do you not care for her? Yeah, you show it well don't you

I know how she's treated and she ain't makin' it up

I want you to understand, but I'm not sure how without stirrin' this up

I've loved her for the last year, but you know that, don't you?

She's loved me the same- unwavering in the days we were apart

You don't want her to act on feelin's- you're scared she'll return to the same old ways

But think back to older days when we laughed and played and she was truly happy

Think back to the days when seeing her sad was a sight to see

Now she's depressed but you act like you can't see it

Now she's angry and I know you don't want to see it

But I do

I see sides of her no one else could ever imagine to

I see the pain behind her eyes that you don't even realize

And I can't even see her

I see with every breath she takes and every time she wakes she wants to die

And I can't even call her

How do you expect her to react when you tell her she can't havee the love of her life?

Play it off as a cheap teenage romance- you'l see. I'll have her as my wife.

Whether you consent now or not- she's promised to me and you can't buy her off

Why can't you understand she's happier when she's with me?

Guess it's 'cause you think she's too much like her mother

She grew up alone always, one sister and no brothers

But now you seperate them in the way you treat them

One you coddle and idiolize as if she was God,

Shayley you despise and act as if she was Satan himself.

Sometimes I don't understand it

Scratch that

I never understand it

That's why I wrote you this letter, to explain what I think

Yeah

Dear Mary

Can't you see

that she needs me?

Can't you see

that she wants me?

I know it hurts

and she's growin' up

But you gotta let her out of this rut before she gets stuck

Yeah

Dear Mary

Can't you see?

I love her and she loves me

You want her to smile,

you want her to be happy

Let her know it's okay

tell her she doesn't have to give up.

Tell her you love her and let her go

it's what she wants

Yeah

Dear Mary

Let her know,

let her go

She deserves to be free,

with me

She needs to be free,

always with me

I'm the man of her dreams,

and she's the girl of my dreams

She keeps herself caged in her mind- always alone

Keep knocking on the door- no ones ever home

You walk away and she notices that you go

But when you turn back she's locked away- as if she didn't notice a thing

You try to help her out but she's always depressed

The moment you think she's fine is the moment she's most stressed

She's lookin' for warmness and you can't see she's gettin' colder

Ask her if she's okay and she shrugs her shoulders

You can't see the boulders that weighs her down

You can't hear her thoughts try to drown her

They're invisible and soundless- but they're real to her

More real than you and I

The pain's deeper than you could imagine but you don't see what's behind her eyes

Always smilin'- you don't see that she cries

But you don't have to see- it's obvious enough to realize she isn't happy

But you act as if you can't see it- you'll never see it

You want to pretend like it's okay and that she worships the ground you walk on

You can't see you're keeping her from getting what she wants,

You tease her and taunt her- she doesn't even bother with a response

She knows it's pointless to argue- in her mind you're the devine ruler

But I know different, you're not a king or queen and you don't reign above her

In my eyes she shines brighter than any star- at the moment you seem starless

A blank page in a book half written

The blackness in the eyes of the once smitten

Don't walk away and pretend like everything's okay

You don't want that, neither do I

Let's talk, it's what has to be done

And after this letter you better sit down and listen

Yeah

Dear Mary

Can't you see

that she needs me?

Can't you see

that she wants me?

I know it hurts

and she's growin' up

But you gotta let her out of this rut before she gets stuck

Yeah

Dear Mary

Can't you see?

I love her and she loves me

You want her to smile,

you want her to be happy

Let her know it's okay

tell her she doesn't have to give up.

Tell her you love her and let her go

it's what she wants

Yeah

Dear Mary

Let her know,

let her go

She deserves to be free,

with me

She needs to be free,

always with me

I'm the man of her dreams,

and she's the girl of my dreams

Last paragraph and I don't think I've said anything new

Let me try this in a different way to see if I can get through to you

What do you expect us to do? Ragin' hormones that we can't get over

Yeah, we did stupid things- but doesn't every teenager?

You tore us apart when we was at our strongest

You tore us apart when we were at our longest

Almost six months in and no signs of stress

Then y'all stepped in and it became a mess

Think about it- just think about it for a while

You've thrown the memories in a pile and you've poured the gas- ready to light

But think about what's right before you ignite

Think about what tearin' us apart again will do to her

You don't see it- she only shows it when she's supposed to be sleepin' at night

She wakes up and she puts the blade to her wrist

One twist, just one, and that's all she wrote

The last time she spoked to me she said,"Matthew I love you."

You honestly think we're just playin' around, don't you?

Truth is I'd die for that girl

Truth is in this despair of a life she become the stars in the dark of my world

Anger filled and depression only

Only had one homie- only this knife but you could never relate

I taught her to love again- you taught her hate

It's not a debate of when she's actually happy

It's time for you to know the truth

We've talked and laughed since those dwindling days

We've tried keeping it secret- but now you know it wasn't me who made her that way

I kept her sane, I kept her away from pain, I kept her here and away from your terroristic reign

Sometimes this relationships feels like a train going off the rails

We scream and shout but we're stuck in the same Hells

I don't mean to get too detailed- this is goin' public and I know it should drive in your heart like Nine Inch Nails

And if I fail this time? I don't care- I dared to speak up once I can do it again

But don't you ever think I'm givin' up on her

I'm here to stay and I'm stayin' forever

Maybe this got through to you

Yeah

Dear Mary

Can't you see

that she needs me?

Can't you see

that she wants me?

I know it hurts

and she's growin' up

But you gotta let her out of this rut before she gets stuck

Yeah

Dear Mary

Can't you see?

I love her and she loves me

You want her to smile,

you want her to be happy

Let her know it's okay

tell her she doesn't have to give up.

Tell her you love her and let her go

it's what she wants

Yeah

Dear Mary

Let her know,

let her go

She deserves to be free,

with me

She needs to be free,

always with me

I'm the man of her dreams,

and she's the girl of my dreams

Hey, I'm here to review! I have close-to-none experience of reviewing lyric, so pardon me if I analyze this poorly. :D

I just wanted to
Write this letter
In hopes I might be able to say somethin'
That might get through to you

Alright, so the first two lines are short. I imagine the singing is fast-paced, and so, the third and fourth lines are too long. Making them shorter so that you have a stable rhythm would improve the way these lines are sung. Here's an example:

I just wanted to
write this letter
so that finally
my words reached you

You can see how the lines are more or less have equal length. In terms of the amount of words, the sequence goes like this: 4, 3, 3, 4. In terms of syllables, it goes: 5, 4, 5, 4. If you are going to sing these lines, you would find yourself in a stable, measured rhythm.

I'm not meanin' any disrespect but you're rejectin' our opinions as if we're trash to you

I single out this line because it struck me as having an awkward length (read: the longest) to the point where it disrupts the flow of the lines. In order to adjust that, take account of its number of words and syllables (or syllables, that one would ensure the rhythm of the lyric.

Alright, given the daunting length of this lyric, I assume it is a rap since you can sing it in a short amount of time with a large amount of words. It is going to be fun to sing this out loud, to know the beat, and have the music background, but since this is a written lyric, and you post it here so that others are allowed to review it, it throws a challenge to me. It seems to ask, from its length, whether I can review this or not. The truth is, I cannot. I cannot read all of this and focus on the aspects I have to. The content is intriguing, and the way this lyric can be sung is limitless. However, I have to admit reading the whole thing would be quite a feat.

So, I can't review further than what I have. My suggestion for you if you want to make a future rap lyric, is to condense the words, treat it as a poem that uses the principle of 'less is more', and consider your reviewers, whether they can read and review this. As it is, it takes a reviewer that has expertise in rap lyric to understand the necessities of having a long length of lyric and have the patience to review it. Unfortunately, I'm not one. So, dismiss this review if your prefer, as I can understand if you think it doesn't help you in the way you want it to be. Keep up the good job! :D

Hey Casanova, it's AshleyDashley here for a review!

So first off I liked your title. It lets the reader know this is personal. The way you start off is almost like you are warning the reader before they read it that what you say they are not going to like.

Dear Mary

Can't you see

Can't you see

I like how this is you chorus. It really bring things back into perspective each time you finish a paragraph.

I really saw nothing wrong with this song. I thought it was written amazingly. Overall you did a magnificent job portraying how you feel and I really do think you got your point across in this. I can really tell you love this girl. And I'm glad you have found that because not many people do. Keep writing and I hope to read more of your work in the future.

AshleyDashley :)
