When Writing Becomes Words on Paper

E - Everyone

In Poems

Isn’t it troubling to see

The words you’ve written

Look like words inscribed

On paper by pen?

***

Isn’t it disheartening to realize

The words don’t have its usual magic,

Its hint of personality and spice?

How gut wrenching and tragic!

***

The very solace you’ve created,

With the language you hold,

The palaces and cathedrals you made

And worlds beyond to behold…

***

Now seems like meaningless scribbles

Like looking at a foreign vernacular

You’re left at the start

Wondering if you truly left that far.

***

My world seems to swirl

As this horrible feeling sinks deeper.

The realization that your writing

Just looks like words on paper.

this is very good and I feel like it captures losing either motivation, love, emotion for/in your writing. this reminds me of when you have writers block and cant think of anything to write but you want to write but it just doesn't feel/look the same as your other works. it also reminds me of when you burn out, kind of like the burnt out gifted kids who were really good and amazing at something but then they started to burn out and they don't see a liking in it anymore. I also feel as if this poem shows the process of you losing the touch of making/doing something you love have less emotion, and the words no longer mean what they once did. instead of having emotion and connecting people they're just words. I like it!

Time for a Black Cat Review!!

MEOW! Hello, friend! My name is Ellie and today I will be reviewing using my very own Black Cat Review Method! It is very similar to the incredible YWS S'more Method but I have Halloween-ified it and made it spooky! My little black cat friend, Vladimir, wants to offer his opinion on your amazing literary piece:

Mystical Witch Hat - What I See, Observe, and Interpret

Let's get right into reviewing this lovely poem, friend!

First of all, the title immediately caught me attention. Maybe its because I am book obsessed and writing obsessed so seeing the words closely connected to those two thing in a sentence lured me in like a fish. And I loved this!

the opening lines are beautiful!

Isn’t it troubling to see

The words you’ve written

Look like words inscribed

On paper by pen?

I love the use of a question to open poems. Again, this caught my attention! From this, I can observe that this is going to be a thought-pattern poem, what I like to call poems that seem to be thought bubbles taken from a writer's mind and organized on paper.

Isn’t it disheartening to realize

The words don’t have its usual magic,

Its hint of personality and spice?

firstly, I will mention that you may want to add punctuation to the bolded text. I only say this since you used it elsewhere in the poem, but if this is the style you were going for, then no need to change anything! I love the content within these words. that familiar feeling of magic associated with writing is gone. but why is it gone? maybe the writer is experiencing writer's block or just doesn't feel right. maybe they miss the writer they used to be. or, maybe they are reading someone else words that seem too fake for them to feel this magic.

and I love this final section, which reads:

My world seems to swirl

As this horrible feeling sinks deeper.

The realization that your writing

Just looks like words on paper.

such a fantastic close, friend! the imagery you use in this is gorgeous. the mental image of the words swirling and this horrible feeling sinking deeper and deeper is so clear in my mind and helped me follow along so much! This kept me engaged throughout the entire poem. Bravo!!

Vladimir’s Advice - Suggestions for Improvement

Besides the punctuation remarks made earlier, I can offer a couple suggestions for improvement. These aren't things that need to be changed but just thoughts. I notice some of your lines have commas, but not all of them. Maybe adding some more, especially in the second last two paragraphs could help. And since you started with a question, maybe you could finish with one too? :D

Jack O’Lanterns - My Favourite Parts and Praises

How gut wrenching and tragic!

I love this line!!! I love how well you use words! I see this constantly throughout your writing :D I love it!!

I also do want to say, I am extremely impressed with your rhyme scheme throughout this poem. The ABCB pattern throughout is a lovely addition!

Black Cat Cuddles - Concluding Ideas and Thoughts

Thanks for sharing your words! I always love seeing you around on YWS and adore your writing!! Have a lovely day!

Your friend,
Ellie

I hope you have a spook-tastical day, filled with black cat mischief!

Thank you for your kind review!

This poem is a poignant and relatable exploration of the despair that can come when one's creative well runs dry. The speaker's anguish is palpable as they lament the loss of magic in their writing, which once felt like a vital and vibrant part of themselves. The use of striking metaphors ("scribbles like a foreign vernacular") and evocative language ("palaces and cathedrals") immerses the reader in the speaker's emotional turmoil.

As I read this poem, I feel a sense of empathy and understanding wash over me. I can almost taste the speaker's frustration and disappointment, like a bitter flavor on the tongue. The longing for the return of inspiration and passion is achingly conveyed, making me want to reach out and offer reassurance.

To take this poem to the next level, I'd suggest experimenting with even more varied sentence structures and stanza breaks to create a sense of urgency and intensity that matches the emotional intensity of the words.

Thank you for your kind reviews!
