When I try to do the image, it only allows the people to open an image in a new tab. They can't see it straight away. Can anyone help?

You need to put the url of the image inside the [img] tags.

When you're writing the post, you should have it look like this:

When you then post the reply, it looks like this:
I am writing bold text

So, yes, you do have to type them in, surrounding what you want to modify.
