The Final Note

In Poetry

My family had a suicide scare. A family member that I love very, very much thought the world would be a better place without him. He needs to know that this world needs him, that I need him. This poem is dedicated to him.

We expect a signal,
to listen as anger like music builds
so we can stop the song from ending
just before silence fills the air.

But instead there is a whisper,
inaudible until we remember,
and regret our carelessness.
We should've listened.

A final clear note sounds,
the last of a beautiful song
that didn't know the power of its own voice,
that I will never hear again.

Wow I really like this one. It's short and to the point, emotional, and true. In the first stanza, the speaker voices her assumption that someone would be noticeably in trouble before they committed suicide; that way the person in trouble could be helped and stopped before it happens.

In the second, the speaker tells about how the signs of a suicidal person aren't loud signs, but quiet ones.

The final Stanza speaks about how the person is already dead, and about how the speaker didn't know the power someone's death could have on her own life. Now the speaker will never hear the lost, loved-one's voice again, until the afterlife.

I just write poetry to throw my mean callous heartless exterior into sharp relief. I’m going to throw you off the ship anyway.
