When you write something, draw something, create something, there is always something in that something that draws you to them. It's like within that something, a smaller something makes that something amazing.
I do understand I used a lot of something's there.
Anyway.
You are always connected to what you create, because it came from you. As a writer, whatever I write has a meaning for me. But sometimes, when I write, there is a character that connects to me. It may not even be the main character. It's just this person in my story that drew me to them and I can't get rid of them because, well, they are the most important to me.
Veronica Roth.
Perfect person to use as an example that most of you know.
Could you guess which character in her story Divergent meant the most to her? Which character she actually wanted to write the whole story from their perspective instead? It wasn't Tris, it was never Tris. Tris was important to her, obviously, but if she could
She would write the whole series from Four's perspective, hence the book Four. If you read that book, you'll understand why. She wrote her reasons and I will not spoil them here for those of you that have not read the book yet.
But the point her is, she connected to Four in such a way that she couldn't connect to anyone else. He had meant a lot to her and that's why he is one of those characters she truly cares about.
For me it happens to be a character I wrote in the storybook Harmony High. For those of you that know it or are in it, take a guess which one of my characters am I strongly connected to?

I feel like we all have a connection to a character for no reason at all, but then again, for every reason that can be.
Honestly, I have no idea why he means so much to me. Maybe it's because he's so lost and he needs help and I'm willing to help him? Or maybe it's because... I have no idea. I just feel this closeness to him that if I ever write in HH, I am more concerned with Will's posts. I care more about what he's going through.
I even based a new book I'm writing on him. Though, he's not in it. I should have made him in it instead. But no. I made the main character like him, in a way. It's going well, I think. But, yeah, a story has started because of my fondness of him as a character.

Hi there! i liked how personal this was. really enjoyed how you made it almost like a conversation, it was like it was breaking the fourth wall. you made it a very relatable and truthful story. i believe this story will reach out to everyone on YWS because of its deep feelings and meaning to all of us. i loved how you used a real life application using Veronica Roth as an example. i hope we all as writers feel the deep connections with our characters. very good story, one of the best ive read.

So, I can relate to this completely. I've just been interviewed by @Thewriter13 about what we enjoy about writing, and I mentioned about the universe you create when you write something. Its like having a child; you name him/her, you bring him/her up in your standards and morals and you get to see a person grow and develop before your very eyes. Sure, maybe their not perfection, but who cares about perfection? Their yours and they are perfect in your eyes and you can see past their flaws so that you can deeply love them. That's the same thing with a character - you always a) see them develop, b) grow before your [metaphoric] eyes, and c) truly love them as your own.
I'm also like this with films, tv-series and books - we all have our own preference and idea of a cool, attractive and enjoyable character. From X-men cartoons, I always like Gambit. Gambit who was previously a baddy. Why? I do not know. I love his character because its him. Hunger Games - I love Finnick. Again, I have no particular reason. I am the complete opposite to him and yet I really like him. Our mind is a strange thing.

Reason why: I can relate to her. Like I mentioned in my interview, your character is taken from you. Not anyone else, but you yourself who is creating the character. Sure, if you base your character on someone you know, there is bound to be a trait, a look, a certain way they speak or what they say that reflects on you. Raelyn relates to my relationship. I'm not saying which because its a bit personal to me. But also, she has the features that I like the most: black hair and green eyes. I always find those pretty.
As for your character, William, I'm sure you like him because of a certain trait or a certain way he goes about things that you like, maybe even the way you describe him.
And of course... You created him

I completely agree with every point you're making in this. I'm really close to a character I created; he's a key factor in most of my stories and he's based loosely off of different characters I've encountered throughout the many books I've read in my life.
He's important to me because I tried to make him as unique as possible. It was important to me to create a character that was realistic and believable. Being able to do that with my own character is really important to basing a story that they are in or are the main focus on.
When you have a character that is really important to you, personal connection and believability are so important. I think that's what makes people really feel close to characters they are similar to or that character is someone they want to be.
I loved reading your piece, it really got me thinking!
