and deals with unpleasant
smells
I'm also slightly unsure about how chairs and unpleasant smells work together? Maybe someone spilled something and it left a mess, or the chair is really old and hasn't been dusted in a while, but other than that, I can't think of much connecting those.
I also think the smell part could be added onto - it's unpleasant, but what makes it like that? Does the chair smell like old lady perfume and rotten fruits, or is it more of a mild-yet-in-your-face mildew must that's eaten up all of the moisture on the chair? It's not uncommon for new furniture to smell weird because of volatile organic compounds, too.
no one ever
thinks
about a table
The usage of basic, commonly seen furniture really furthers the idea of taking things for granted when you could possibly be without them. In the eyes of most people, a table or something that gives off light is always available and becomes adjusted to having that because it's been there forever. It's not a great way to think, but it's not rare.
It's hard to imagine life without a table, or a light, or a chair, but it would be even harder to live without all of those things seen so widely, I presume.
a bright, light lamp
that sees us
and lets us see
I love the personality given to the lamp. It has eyes, it can see what's in the surroundings and is aware of the narrator and other people living, and I believe that adds to the whole environment being created. I haven't seen objects projected like that since The Brave Little Toaster, which is a terrible example for me to provide by the way.
think on these
these helpful things
that we take for
granted
when some have
nothing
Small word jumbled there, but that's been pointed out by a few people and isn't really important to anything actually occurring in the poem.
I like the way you ended this because it restated the main idea without actually reusing any lines or reworking already said things. That's one thing about poetry that I strongly dislike because I have strong feelings about repetition in a general sense, but it's been basically avoided here besides the "no one ever / thinks" part.
I'm going to miss doing this because I've gotten used to it, but that's poetry 2020 done!
A final cheers! <3
