Things Fall Apart: Chapter 25: Hospital Humor

PreviousNext

Frey

When we were little kids, Asteria always loved to go too fast in the Little Tikes Cozy Coupe car we shared. You know, the yellow and red plastic “car,” you had to push along with your feet? As we got older, Asteria and I would take turns seeing who could last the longest riding on top of that thing down a big hill. Every time, I fell off after a few seconds, but Asteria would fly down the street, looking downright graceful, always jumping off lightly before the car ran into a bush.

She never crashed.

Waiting in the hospital to see whether that little girl is dead or not can’t be described in regular words. Juno is pretty proficient in French, and if she wasn’t so catatonic that she can’t speak, she’d say, “There’s no word for this in either of the languages I know.”

So we wait without words to help us cope. The air smells like rubbing alcohol, and I wonder if Asteria is alive enough beyond those walls to tell the difference between the kind of alcohol used to heal and the kind used to kill. Mom has her head plastered to Dad’s shoulder by tears. Juno does her best to calm Arinna down, Arinna whose screaming sobs have been going on now for about ten or fifteen minutes. Some guy in a brown stained shirt tells us to shut her up but we all just stare at him until he’s too uncomfortable to stay. Arinna, who probably loves Asteria more than Mom and Dad. Arinna, who asked me to teach her how to make coffee so she could make it for Asteria in the early hours of the morning before she came staggering home from one party or another. Arinna, who can never remember Juno’s blindness because she knows Juno is more than her disability. Arinna, who, at nine years old, has to wait to see if her sister is dead. Mom has told us a hundred and twenty times that the police said the driver was fine, but “fine,” is a relative term, so we wait in suspense anyway.

A white coat comes through the door. A doctor. We stand.

“Asteria was driving drunk,” says the woman. Dr. Longstead, from her name-tag. “She’s lucky to be alive. She has a concussion, and she will for about a month. She’s suffered some bruising of the collar bone, a few broken ribs and one broken finger. Other than that, she’s still kicking.” The doctor finally smiles. “Your daughter is fine,” she concludes, mostly for my mom and dad. Juno still isn’t satisfied.

“And the passenger?” she asks. Her hands clutch Arinna’s in a death grip the likes of which have never been seen from Juno.

“Ben?” the doctor frowns. “I’m so sorry. Are you immediate family?”

“Yes,” I say before Juno can be her honest self. Dr. Longstead seems surprised but says nothing. “He’s our cousin,” I add.

“Well, I’m sorry, but your cousin has just come from surgery,” Dr. Longstead says. “He broke his back in the accident...” Dr. Longstead takes a pause as if we have time for that. “And his brain function has been compromised.”

“What does that mean?” Juno’s voice grips the air. The doctor sighs.

“It means he will be paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life,” the doctor says all in one breath, “and he’s suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. He will have cognitive and communication problems for a very long time. But we do offer speech therapy and we have a certified speech-language pathologist on staff here at the hospital.” Nobody hears the last bit.

Juno sits down.

The captain of the football team, paralyzed.

Juno’s only real crush, unable to remember who she is.

The tall, blonde, flirtatious class president, now unrecognizable.

“Can we see him?” I ask, knowing Juno can’t, but asking anyway.

“Of course.” I take Juno by the hand and nod to Dad, who nods back. We follow Dr. Longstead through a maze of white hallways.

“He’s right in there,” Dr. Longstead says, gesturing. “He is under heavy medication and will not wake up to see you, but you can at least sit with him for a little while.”

Juno opens the door without a word. I thank the nice doctor, knowing what she’s letting us do probably isn’t allowed for someone who just came out of a life-changing surgery.

Ben– or what is now considered Ben, I guess– lies peacefully on the hospital bed, as if he doesn’t know yet that his face is completely ruined.

The right half of his face is grey and looks almost as if it’s about to slop right off his skull. One closed eye bulges farther out than the other closed eye. His lips are stitched up on one side, in a ghoulish half-smile, a shadow of his old smile. A big set of stitches dominates the swollen mess of the left half of his face, stretching from his hairline to his jawline, over the smaller eye and down his cheek. His nose is obviously broken, purple and grotesque, with a little nose-piece set to help it heal.

He looks like Two-Face from that Batman movie.

But I leave that out when I describe his face to Juno.

Juno doesn’t cry when I finish. In fact, she smiles.

“It’s not like it matters to me, right?” she whispers. She feels her way to Ben’s body and dances her hands over the ruins of his face. “The deformed boy and the blind girl,” she laughs softly. She kisses the big set of stitches on Ben’s cheek lightly and holds out her hand to me.

“I’m ready to go.”

Heya Your Highness!

Whoa. That was definitely a chapter to play on the heartstrings. Frey here has been such a big support to everyone, I just love that about him so much. What I also really love is Juno's reaction to hearing about his face. Of course it doesn't matter to her, and even if she could see, I doubt it would change anything. I know that Juno has her own fair share of problems when it comes to her secret and all, but now Ben has his, and they're going to through rocky times together. In fact, each of them have their own problems at hand now. And what I love so much is the story you've built out of this. When I started this novel, I never knew how far it would come. You've really shown us these characters on a journey, and I love that!

Juno is pretty proficient in French, and if she wasn’t so catatonic that she can’t speak, she’d say, “There’s no word for this in either of the languages I know.”

I am going to keep this review short and sweet because this chapter is so near perfection it would be a crime for me to pull out too much and ask for changes. I just have this one here because well... it seemed really random, awkward and out of place to me. They're anxiously waiting for results and then suddenly you throw in that Juno can speak French and I'm lost for a second, wondering where it's going. And then you do give a reason for it being there but I think it would be better off not in there at all? Just seemed so... random?

in a ghoulish half-smile, a shadow of his old smile

This is a really really nitpicky nitpick, but I would advise you change the end of that sentence to 'a shadow of what it used to be.' That way you don't repeat the word 'smile' and you also show us how he is totally different from how he used to appear.

It would be nice to have a small description of the hospital in there too, because I am having a hard time picturing it. You don't need to run off with adjectives and all that, but maybe saying how the polished white walls seemed to reflect their emptiness and how it being scarily clean everywhere just put Frey more on edge. Or something. Seeing as this is such an emotion based chapter, why not use the setting to help set the atmosphere as well?

Other than those three little points, a wonderful chapter. You really like messing with your readers brains don't you? I am going to keep readingggg

Hi there!

Yup. The feels are officially broken. Thanks for that.

Every time, I fell off after a few seconds, but Asteria would fly down the street, looking downright graceful, always jumping off lightly before the car ran into a bush.

She never crashed.

Oh the irony! I just can't take it!

Poor Ben. All this time, all he ever wanted was for Juno to forgive him and like him again. And now when she finally feels that way about him again, he's not awake for it. It's an interesting change of feeling, really. Wasn't Juno super pissed at him not too long ago? Now she's ready to get back together with him, what with the "The deformed boy and the blind girl" comment. Seriously girl, what's your problem?! Make up your mind! Although the good part in all of this, I guess, is that Ben won't remember how mad Juno was at him. Maybe they'll get to start over new. The way you're taking this story though, they probably won't be able to. Thanks a lot :P

Just a quick note about hospitals and all that jazz. When a patient is in critical care (or something close to it) like Ben is, they don't let just anyone in to see them. And whoever is in charge of visitors and such check to see who the patient's emergency contacts and family members are. So I find it a bit unrealistic that the doctor just lets Frey and Juno in to see Ben. But that's neither here nor there. We needed to see what had happened to Ben eventually.

I have to say, I'm sitting here laughing at how pathetic the parents are. Not that it's a funny situation. On the contrary, this is probably the worst thing you could've done here. BUT ASTERIA'S PARENTS KNOW THAT SHE DRINKS AND THEY DIDN'T THINK TO TAKE AWAY THE CAR KEYS! Come on Mom and Dad, are you really that stupid? If you really cared about Asteria's drinking problem, which you're trying to convince us you do, then you should probably do everything in your power to make sure something like this doesn't happen. You shall not be nominated for the parents of the year award any time soon. Or any time ever, really.

Will the feels be restored in the next chapter or just ground into even smaller bits? Who knows. I'm about to find out though.

Keep writing!
**Noelle**

Noelle you have an astounding knack for guessing what I'm going to write :P
Asteria's parents DID take away the keys.
But do you really think the Queen of Pranks doesn't know where her parents hide things? :D You're too good!
Thanks for the review, love! See you next chapter

Let's start reviewing as I won't get much chance later. This is obviously at the top of my list. I did promise to leave a review.
I love how you make Juno open up her true feelings towards Ben. You never know what you've got till it's gone, right? As Confused said, there is a chance that Ben won't remember her anymore (which would be so sad that your work might be the first to make me cry). It just adds to the sadness.
I think the situation almost seems sadder than if he had died. I am definitely glad that he's still alive though. *punches the air, jumping for joy*
This is another emotive chapter from you. I was nearly crying after I read this bit:

The captain of the football team, paralysed.
Juno's only real crush, unable to remember who he is...

I love that Juno still loves Ben (not that I didn't think she would). "The deformed boy and the blind girl" sums it up perfectly, it's so powerful. How do you do it?
See you next chapter. I must know what happens when Ben wakes up! I literally have nothing bad to say about this.

I would start my review with a congratulations but the mood just sets it off. This is another chapter well done no doubt. And I have to say, in the beginning I thought you wrote teen fiction best. I'm not taking it back, but you write suspense and tragedy just as well.

I love how this chapter flows, starting with a sort of flashback from Frey, surmounting into the tension of the moment. That's a lot more than just a flashback. It's character development too. And I love how it makes so much sense.

Right now the story is anything but calmness. Its the climax no doubt. I like how things are flowing. From this chapter its obvious that Juno is in love with Ben. But, the catch is that there's a chance he doesn't remember her, right?(tell me if I'm getting something wrong here I don't like to live with wrong ideas). Oh my God! The possibilities...

I am dying of anticipation about what's going to happen next. Have I ever told you how awesome your story is? I mean not your story, the story that your writing, this one. Your story always sound so sure and true. Mine just sound like hazy dreams written on paper. Inconsistent, stupid sentences, could it get any worse?

Once again, I commend you for your brilliance. And I hope and pray that you never stop.

ConfusedGlasses over and out!

Review

Hey! IamTraunt here to review!
Yes. I am having a party for this. First one to review. I'm quite surprised actually. Usually I can't get a word in edge ways That's probably a lie. Has the Summer Holidays ended for you guys in America? I'm curious. My first week is just coming to an end. Yay, another five to go! I am away in India on the 1st of August to two weeks so I'll have some catching up to do. I hate missing out on things.
Anyway...

Nitpick!

A big set of stitches dominates the swollen mess of the left half of his face, stretching from his hairline to his jawline, over the smaller eye and down his cheek.

This doesn't (or shouldn't, as Juno would say) be all one word. It is simply jaw line.

... I'm sure I usually have a long list of things that you need to correct but today I'm stumped. Sorry. That's the only one I could find.

Characters!

Can I just say...
Little Tikes Cozy Coupe car!
Image
I had one of these cute little red cars. I had some fun memories with it. Wow. I had an idea of what it was but I didn't realise that it was exactly like my old one. I like the happy picture you portrayed when writing about Frey's flashback, could we call it? I must commend you, like your story of Peter Pan and sweet Everly, you really are heart felt when you tell us about these happy thoughts, feelings and memories. The feels, Royal, the feels! Seriously. I like (and at the same time) don't like the hospital scene as you open up Juno's feelings towards Ben. Its so sweet. I especially love the line:
“The deformed boy and the blind girl,” she laughs softly.

So, so sweet... <3

Storyline!

So, I'm very interested to see where this leads. Juno is in love with Ben, Ben is physically damaged and said to be paralysed, Asteria has crashed her car after being told she is being sent away, Frey is coming out of the closet and telling the world he's gay and everything is topsy turvey. I want to see if Asteria tells Juno the truth - I'm really curious to as when that is going to happen. Its like when you built up suspense as to The Incident. I am dying, literally dying, to know where your story is going. 25 chapters and at least 25 more to come! Half way through! Yay!

Half Way There!

See you soon!

I love her dearly, but I can’t live with her for a day without feeling my whole life is wasting away.
