Frey

Friday was a blur of breaking down the lock-in and cleaning up and something that had to do with Juno. When I got home, Mom and Dad said we’d talk about it tomorrow.

Well, it’s tomorrow, and we’re all sitting in the kitchen around the table. This must be serious; we only have family meetings in emergencies. The tension in the air is palpable. Juno shifts in her seat and pets Reginald anxiously. Asteria slumps in her chair, half-dead to the world. Arinna is the only clear-eyed child in the room besides me. Even she is silent in this moment. That's what scares me.

“Someone told a large group of people about Juno’s incident,” Mom begins.

“We don’t know who it is,” adds Dad, but Mom’s eyes flicker for a moment to Asteria, which tells me everything I need to know.

“But we think it’s best if Juno take a few days off from school,” Mom continues, “to let everyone cool down.” Juno looks up; clearly it’s the first time she’s hearing of this decision that was made without her consent.

Another decision made without her consent, I think to myself. Poor thing.

“I want to go to school on Monday,” she protests, the way we all knew she would. “The longer we wait, the worse it will be when I do go back.” Arinna pipes up.

“Maybe Juno could go back to school with Reginald,” she suggests. “Maybe having a monkey will distract people from whatever’s going on.” I smile. Arinna never asks questions when things are serious, and for that, we are grateful. No, she doesn’t know what happened to Juno. We’ll tell her when she’s old enough. For now, she just goes with the flow.

“Pets aren’t allowed at school, honey,” Mom says gently. “You know that.”

“I’m going back on Monday,” Juno declares abruptly. “I have nothing to be ashamed of.”

Therapy lessons, I assume. I never though therapy actually worked. It hasn’t for Asteria.

I look over at my exhausted hungover sister. Asteria knows her lecture is coming up next. She’s bracing herself for it with copious amounts of Gatorade.

“And you,” Dad growls. Here it comes. “Your mother caught you drinking on school campus.” Dad stands. Holy shit. “What do you have to say for yourself?”

Asteria sighs. “I–”

“I don’t want to hear it.” Dad begins to pace. “Asteria, we have done everything we can to help you. But clearly you’re not interested in helping yourself.” Mom tries to cut in but Dad keeps going. “So we’ve called the DMV and they’re revoking your license until further notice.”

Asteria’s eyes grow wide with hurt.

“You can’t do that!” she yells. Silence. Mom speaks.

“Arinna, go upstairs.” Arinna does as she’s told. I can see Asteria’s face crumpling under the anticipation of what’s coming. Even Juno’s dead eyes seem terrified.

“WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO TO GET THROUGH TO YOU?” Dad starts. I sink lower in my chair. “DO YOU WANT TO BE SENT TO REHAB AGAIN? DO YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU DID IS ALSO AGAINST THE LAW? DO YOU WANT US TO TURN YOU IN TO THE POLICE?” Asteria looks down at her hands. Mom gestures to Juno and I to leave. I take Juno’s arm and lead her upstairs, trying to block out Dad’s incessant rage.

“I’ve never seen him like this,” Juno whispers. For once, neither of us laugh at an old blind-person joke.

“I know, me neither.”

When I get back to my room, I find a text from Adrian:

What’s going on? Twitter is all abuzz about your sister.

I text him back quickly and put on my shoes.

I’m coming over, I text. Prepare the Cheez-Its.

Three minutes later, I’m snacking on Adrian’s couch in between telling him what happened.

“And we have no idea who it is,” I finish, stuffing my face. Adrian gives me a Look, as if he doesn’t believe me. “Okay, they have no idea who it is,” I confess through a mouthful of Cheez-Its. “I have a hunch, but I’m not telling you.”

“What? C’mon, Frey,” Adrian complains. I shake my head. Adrian pouts so I change the subject.

"What have people been saying on Twitter?" I ask, preparing for the worst. Adrian fishes his phone from his pocket, clicks around and then hands it to me.

A bunch of people from school started a thread just for Juno's Incident. One tweet reads:

its all fun n games til ur sister spills a secret then its just fun. #JunoHGotRaped

Another reads:

no wonder juno doesn't like wearing dresses #easyaccess #JunoHGotRaped

There must be a dozen tweets but I can't read anymore. Adrian pats my back.

"They're jerks, all of them," he says viciously. "I hope they stick a fork in a toaster." I laugh in spite of myself. We talk for a bit about something else until a lull interrupts the flow of the conversation.

“How’s the Senior Prank coming along?” I ask in the silence. “Seems like you and Asteria haven’t had much time to plan.”

“I saw her with that Oliver guy,” he says, taking a measly two Cheez-Its from the bowl. “I think they’re cooking up something.” I raise an eyebrow. Adrian shrugs. “Without me, I know,” he says, reading my mind.

“But you and Asteria are prank geniuses,” I say.

“Yeah, yeah, but I have other stuff on my mind right now,” Adrian snaps. I stop chewing.

“Are you still thinking about coming out?”

Adrian nods. I sigh.

“But, Adrian, you’re on the football team,” I plead. “They’ll kill you.” Adrian shakes his head, and puts a hand on my arm. Tiny tingles begin to erupt from the spot where he’s touching me but I keep my face stoic.

“They trust me,” he says. “I’m their co-captain. Ben James and the guys, they know me. If I came out to them, they’d have my back. It’s like I’m a spy who’s infiltrated enemy lines and has earned their trust– like Snape and Voldemort.” Adrian pauses to take a drink of water. The tingles fade after he takes his hand away. “I’ve earned their respect, and now I’ll use that to my advantage,” he continues, “but it’ll only work if you do it with me.”

“Why do I have to do it with you?”

“Because I want you to.”

“And what if I say no?”

“Then, I’ll find a new gay friend.”

“Good luck with that.”

“C’mon,” Adrian whines, touching my arm again. This time, I can’t help but jump a little. “For me?” Adrian pouts again and now I know I’ll agree even though I know it’s suicide.

“Fine,” I agree. Adrian pumps his fist into the air and lets out a whoop of excitement.

“We’ll do it at homecoming,” he babbles, as if he’s had this planned for months. He probably has, come to think of it. “I’ll ask you to homecoming in some cutesy way, maybe even during a football game and then everyone will know.” I nearly choke on my Cheez-Its. The bowl is running low.

“Whoa, wait, what?” I wheeze. “In front of the whole school?”

“Okay, maybe not, I’m just spitballing,” Adrian says, but I know he’s not. I sigh.

Just do this for him, I think to myself. Maybe he’ll love you after this, and that’s what you want, isn’t it?

I sigh again.

“Can’t wait,” I grumble, but Adrian can’t hear me over his own voice listing off other ideas for homecoming.

Hey Your Highness! Deanie back for more!

I think I'll keep this review short and sweet, because there isn't much I can say here. I feel like the family meeting was definitely needed, and although I feel terribly bad for Asteria, it is clear that she needs to sort her life out. My only wonder is, why do they even bother to include Arinna even though she knows nothing about the case and is sent back up to her room almost immediately? Or maybe just because they need it to be a family as a whole? I dunno, but maybe have Frey briefly ponder it in his thoughts as she is sent away and come up with a reason that also explains this to the reader.

On top of that, I feel like we need to have more of Frey's own thoughts inserted in between the arguing and decision making. More of what you did when he felt sorry for Juno because again another decision was being made against her consent. Why? Because I felt like Frey was a bystander when it came to this whole family meeting, and unless you give us a good reason for this chapter being shown through his point of view, it seems to me like it would've been more worth it to have if from Juno's or Asteria's. So, give us a reason it should be his, with more of his thoughts or minor things he picks up on like his mothers glances, and then it's worth it :)

Mom’s eyes flicker for a moment to Asteria

I am so confused about this, and I did mention it in my previous review as well. Does she know for sure it's Asteria (and if she does, I wonder how?) or does she simply suspect? I know we're not in her point of view so we can't know... but maybe she confides in one of the triplets or something? It would probably be Frey. I just wonder at this...

if Juno take a few days off from school

Take should be takes here.

now I know I’ll agree even though I know it’s suicide.

I would take out the second use of 'I know' in that sentence because it isn't necessary and becomes repetitive.

I am going to stop there because there isn't much more I need to comment on, or would change. These chapters are always wonderful, your style and you bring across the story in such a wonderful way as well. The characters have truly come to life for me, and this tragedy and all the other minor story lines fall together so well.

I best keep reading to catch up!

Hi there!

I just realized I read this chapter forever ago and totally didn't review it >< But none the less, I'm here now! :D

its all fun n games til ur sister spills a secret then its just fun. #JunoHGotRaped

So everyone at school knows that Asteria was the one to spill the beans. Yet everyone seems to be going around acting like they have no idea who did it. Just a general observation. Maybe that's so Juno won't end up knowing? Everyone's pretending for her sake maybe?

Here again we see Asteria's dad getting mad at her about the drinking problem. He screams that he doesn't want to have to send her back to rehab and all that. Now, I remember in an earlier chapter, he had actually decided to send her to rehab, or at least an AA meeting, right? But then we don't hear about that for a while. That would probably be something to mention in one of the previous chapters. Just so this conversation makes a bit more sense :)

No!!!! Adrian has just lost all respect I ever had for him. He's pressuring Frey into coming out. Maybe Frey doesn't want to come out. Maybe Frey is perfectly fine with keeping this whole thing a secret. If Adrian really liked Frey, he wouldn't be pressuring him into coming out. Besides, they're not official yet! How can he expect Frey to trust him enough to come out with him? Just doesn't seem right in my mind.

EDIT After skimming through previous chapters again, I have realized that Adrian and Frey have known each other since forever. Why didn't I realize this before??? o.o I still don't like Adrian asking Frey to come out with him...

Something I've noticed as I've read through this is that the plot really comes together well. At the beginning I can remember voicing my concerns of you writing each chapter from a different character's perspective. But as I read on, I realized how well it worked. Despite the constant switch between POVs, the story reads well. There aren't any time skips or holes in the plot that I can find. I'm impressed.

Alrighty then, onto the next chapter! Seriously, I'm hooked to this story. Must...keep...reading.

Keep writing!

Can I just say, this was pretty clever. By using Frey's POV and talking about him and Adrian you have made sure we're still thinking about him as much as we're thinking of Juno. I think that is a good change this chapter.
Also, if Adrian plans on coming out to the football team and everything, then this will affect Frey somewhat, yes? I can't escape the sense of foreboding... What if it all goes horribly wrong? I feel you might be alluding to something.
You have developed Frey's storyline now, and, I suppose, Asteria's. As always, I really want to hear more. I love how each of the triplets has their own issues and that you use their points of view to present them. They all seem like very real characters.
Hope to see your next chapter soon, keep me posted.

Hey! IamTraunt here to review!

Nitpicks!

Juno looks up; clearly it’s the first time she’s hearing of this decision that was made without her consent.

This doesn't sound quite right. I read this a loud and found that the tense is a bit iffy. I think you should put: "she's heard of".

Therapy lessons, I assume. I never though therapy actually worked. It hasn’t for Asteria.

This should be "I never thought".

Characters!

Wow, you can get a lot of developing characters to stick out in one person's point of view! That's some achievement. I have seven characters at large in my story at the moment and I'm finding it hard to balance them all out and give them that special 'umph!' that they need, but you - yes you - are doing an incredible job of portraying your characters feelings through body language, thoughts and most importantly... Dialogue. We get to actually listen to Juno's voice in our head, determined to go to school. I can hear the triplet's dad shouting at Asteria because he's so angry and upset, I can hear Frey choking on his Cheez-its (need to try 'em!!) and ask the who, what, where, why speech (I always do that!). You have come so far, Royal, you should be proud of yourself! Your characters have come to life :)

Storyline!

Well, well, well... Asteria, what do you have to say for yourself? Look what you've done! Twitter is having a field day! I'm so mad. Urgh. Poor Juno!
Anyway - storyline. So, we have a lot of drama building up here, it has finally come to its main point where I know something is going to go off (with a bang!) It is just coming. I can feel it. When Juno finds out about what her sister did she will be so, so SO mad. This chapter shows the build up of that tension, for Juno, Asteria AND Frey. All of them are dealing with something right now.

Spoiler
Question: Are you Panster or a Planster? Do you (this is going to sound stupid but it is Panster's definition) 'ride by the seat of your pants' or simply put 'do you write as you go along'? Or do you have to plan each chapter/moment?

Great job, Royal! See you soon ;)

I am 400000000% a Panster. I never plan, but actually I did plan this chapter a bit, only because I had to make a decision on whether to continue from the Lock-In or skip a little time to move the story along. Also, I knew I wanted to further Adrian and Frey's discussion on coming out. Other than that, nothing was planned.
I know I have certain events that I want to happen but I have no idea when they will happen or how they will happen. :D It's an interesting way, I know but planning makes me crazy.
Thank you for such a lovely, detailed review! I'll get right to those little mistakes.

YAY! ANOTHER PANSTER!! *hugs and shakes hand*
I am such a Panster. All my stories are Panster Stories. I do exactly what you do!!! I was at school today and I thought of something that could happen in my up coming chapter of Truant xD I hate planning. It drives me iiiinnnnnsssaaaannne (well, even more). Sometimes we do have to do research a little, but Planster's just usually sit down and go for it (and hope everything turns out for the best).
Your welcome, my best Panster friend. Anytime!

Yayyy! Yes, I used to be a Planster and I actually have like eight or nine different plans for the same storyline scrawled in one of my capital-N Notebooks but good heavens, it drove me up the wall!
Fun Fact: Stephen King is a Panster!
*hugs new Panster friend*

Oooo! Yay Stephan King! *Jumps for joy*
I once did some research and planned out a girl's life when she found out she had Alopecia. That story sadly never did meet up with my note book. My notebook said it didn't like to plan xD
*squeezes Royal and then blushes and apologizes for crushing my Panster buddy*

Hi, RoyalHighness. This is Pinkie here for a review. Excuse me as I put on my glasses. *puts on my pink glasses* Let's get started.

This is an interesting chapter. I enjoyed Frey's POV. She seems like a caring sister who is trying to protect her sibling's incident. However, Adrian, the character that I don't like, tell everyone about it. I really want to read more from Frey. However, I want to read more about the other characters. Also, I didn't see any errors on here. I like this story a lot. Anyway, have a great night.

Awesome Job! :D

Cheers

Your reviewer, Pinkiegirl13

Frey is a boy, sweetheart! :D Adrian hasn't told anyone, it was Asteria. But details, details.
And thank you for a lovely review!

Hey! Another chapter well done. I like how you keep shifting POVs between. It gives the feel of... I don't know... it just gives a feel okay? A good feel. And in this chapter, yu save us all from the nerve wreck of having to go through this from Juno's point of view or even Asteria's. That would have been pretty depressing for all of us.
Just like Frey and everyone else who knows that Asteria spilled the beans I am angry at her. Okay yeah she was drunk but she never did that before. I thought she took it as her duty to protect her siblings from unwanted attention. Isn't that what she said?
I'm looking forward to the next chapter, whichever POV it is. I'd like to see some more of Ben, that guy deserves more screen time.
Ciao!
PS: Don't forget to notify me...

thank you thank you my dear!
