Juno

I honest to God can’t remember anything that’s happened this week! It’s all just gone by in a blur. Nothing–nothing– could distract my attention from this day. Asteria hogged Ben all week to make today easier for her to stand, so I haven't had the chance to talk to him alone since Monday.

Emma helps me take my overnight bag from above my locker. By now it’s about 4:00 pm.

“You ready?” asks Ben’s deep voice from just behind my right ear. I shiver. Emma has to leave me to help set up the games and activities, so she gives me over to Ben.

“Help her,” Emma tells Ben. Ben laughs. I can feel his head snapping back with the force of his laughter. I can feel the air reverberate with it, come alive with the sound of it.

No, I'm not in love.

Not yet.

“I will,” Ben says. Emma squeezes my arm and then she’s gone.

“Ready for what?” I ask when she leaves. I hear some girls squealing down the hall. The air feels thicker than usual, like something big is about to happen.

Ben takes the bag from my hands.

“For our day, of course,” he says. I can hear his smile.

Our day?” I feel Ben shrug. I laugh, and drop the question. “Where are you taking me?”

“The girls are getting set up in the auditorium,” Ben says. “The boys are gonna sleep in the gym.” Ben takes my hand. “Why are you shaking?” he asks.

“Uh...” Ben helps me out of a door and up some stairs to the auditorium. “I’m cold?”

Ben laughs. “Right, sure.”

“I am.” I feel Ben shrug again.

Ben guides me into the crowded-sounding auditorium. We bump into Mrs. Perchnap, the World’s Nicest Lady and Greatest Secretary, who tells us where to set up my sleeping bag and gives me a sheet with all the activities available.

“Thanks, Mrs. P,” Ben says as he leads me away to a far corner of the room.

“Thanks, Ben,” is all I can say as he helps me unfold my sleeping bag and put my stuff down.

“Don’t mention it.” Ben takes my hand again and ushers me back outside, giving me the sheet of activities to clutch in my other hand while he picks up... something else...

“Where are we going?” I ask.

“None of these activities looks fun,” Ben says. “Except the water-gun fight in the indoor pool. So I thought we could go have a picnic on the soccer field.” He must’ve picked up a picnic basket. He sounds so nervous, which makes me feel way more at ease.

“Won’t people be using the soccer field?”

“I got special permission via Mrs. Perchnap,” Ben says. “No one will bother us.”

“Wow,” I say. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I need Asteria’s help with this. She’s always been better at this kind of thing.

Ben has been planning this picnic, I think almost incoherently. Ben is taking me to the soccer field for a picnic. I can’t breathe.

Ben stops to get a better grip on the basket. We must be on the soccer field. I take advantage of his stopping to take off my shoes.

“Ready?” he asks, taking my hand again. He must be really scared of letting me fall. The ground is uneven, but my bare feet help me stay steady. The pungent smell of freshly mowed grass fills my nose and I grin. It's my favorite smell, and part of me wonders if Ben had the field mowed especially for this. I shake my head inwardly.

There's no way he could have known that's my favorite scent.

Right?

Ben takes me to what must be the middle of the field because we had to walk a long way. He unfolds a blanket and sets out the food. He helps me sit, wrapping one strong arm around my waist, placing me gently on the ground like I'm made of porcelain.

“Are you hungry?” he asks. He takes the lids off of plastic tubs, which make satisfying sucking sound.

“Not particularly,” I confess. Ben doesn’t say anything so he must be shrugging. I wait for the same sound from the elevator on Monday, the “Oh,” of remembrance. There it is.

“That’s okay,” he says. “We can just hang out and talk.”

“Okay,” I say, “what do you want to talk about?”

“I want to hear all about you,” Ben says. “I want you to tell me everything I’ve been missing out on since we were little.” My heart stops a little.

Everything?” I ask nervously. Ben pats my hand.

“Okay, not everything, if you have something to hide,” Ben says. Does he know? “But most everything.”

“Okay...” My voice trails a little. “Where do you want me to start?”

“How did you go blind?” Ben asks after a moment. He crunches something in his mouth. Probably a strawberry. Ben loves strawberries– Asteria told me that once.

“I was...” My heart slams against my chest. My palms break out in a sweat. I have to choose my words carefully. Ben remembers a time when I wasn’t blind, which terrifies me. Asteria might’ve slipped while she was under the influence and told him what really happened. I sigh to calm my heart rate. “I’d rather not–”

“It’s okay,” Ben interrupts hastily. “Don’t tell me anything you don’t want me to know.” A heavy pause. “Okay, how about your favorite things?”

Immediately and without warning, we both start to sing.

“THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THIIIIIIINGS!” We fall over on the grass from laughing so much. I have never felt so alive.

"the crowded-sounding auditorium"
*This doesn't flow very well, so you might want to try and find another way to describe the auditorium, such as "the noisy auditorium".

"I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe."
*You don't really need to write this a second time, especially since you mention it again a few sentences later. We get the feeling just with one sentence.

"Ben takes me to what must be the middle of the field because we had to walk a long way."
*because we HAVE to walk . . .

"He crunches something in his mouth. Probably a strawberry."
*strawberries don't really make a crunching sound . . .

Here are a few grammar errors. This was a really good chapter because we get to see how Juno and Ben connect and you tell about how they have known each other for a long time, but haven't really hanged out much until now.

Hey there your Highness!

A short little review from me - there isn't really much to say here that the other reviewers haven't already pulled out. I love this chapter! Ben seems so sweet and kind of shy, and I love how Juno is putting down all these things like always holding her hand and everything to her being blind. They're going to make the sweetest couple even though I am a bit sad for Asteria :( It can't be easy being a triplet and for the person you fancy to actually like your sister instead of her. I can understand why she went around hogging Ben. There are only two things here to comment on.

One of them is Emma. Right now, she seems like a stock character. Someone who is there to support Juno but we barely ever really see. She just comes when Juno needs help, says a few words and kind of disappears, even though them two are supposed to be best friends. It would be awesome to see a bit more of her, maybe have her come over to Juno's one evening and talk about how the so-called "date" with Ben went? Just something were we get to see a bit more of their relationship and of Emma herself.

“How did you go blind?”

That's a pretty big bomb to land there, Ben. And he lands it so easily as well! I mean, this is not something you pull out of the blue. I'm sure he is curious to know more about this, but wouldn't he be more careful with his approach? Build up to it? More gentle instead of blasé? I don't know... Ben seems like a considerate persona and seeing as he knows Juno wasn't simply blind from birth and there has to be a story about it, he seems a bit unfeeling now...

Other than that, this was a super chapter as always. I am going to go off and read about the characters! Keep me updated, as always ;)

Deanie x

Okay, I can't answer the thing about Ben and blindness right now because that's a spoiler as to why he would just up and say that so brazenly. I can tell you that he doesn't want to make the blindness sound like a big deal, so in his mind, he wants it to sound like a normal question. Does that make sense?

I have been wanting to find a better place for Emma, as well. I feel like even as I'm writing, I don't know how to get her into this story better, but you've just given me a GREAT idea! I know in future chapters, she'll be a much bigger presence, but if she got in on the picnic, it would be a great time to get to know her better! Thanks for the suggestion, that'll probably be Juno's Lock-In 1.2 or 2.1 or something! XD

Confused here for a review!
Its sad that I didn't make it while this chappy was still in the green room, but oh well.
I AM SO...... on my gosh when the heck are you gonna update again???!!!
I need to know what happened and whats gonna happen!
Yes. ITS THAT GREAT.
Okay.
*breathes*
So, I spotted some nitpicks in there, typos I mean. Better fix those fast honey.

1. I honest to God...
missed a word...

2. Ben takes me to what must be the middle of the field because we had to walk a long way further...
Instead of saying further, you could say a long way out. That sounds better doesn't it? Think about it.

3. The air seems thicker than usual, like something big is about to happen...
Instead of saying seems, you could say feels. That's a bit more showing than telling. ThereseCricket was lecturing me about that the other day. On a side note you could completely ignore this. Its your story for crying out loud.

That's pretty much it. Keep me updated cause I am SO hooked.
ConfusedGlasses signing off.

Thank you Confused!!
Yeah I took out "further," but the "honest to God," thing is a personal phrase of Juno's. It's kind of like her colloquial term.
Thank you so much for your awesome review and your spectacular personhood! :D

Oh I see. Its sorta of like how we say "dunno" instead of "don't know" eh? Okay, fine by me. Actually it just makes her that much of a real person.
Personhood, really? where did that come from?

Hey! IamTraunt here to review!
Dang it! I'm not first. Again. Oh, well! I've still got plenty to say about this fantastic piece of work! I've been looking forward to this moment for quite some time - and now its finally here! Yay! You've done a great job, your Highness (as usual).

Nitpick!

Spoiler
It's my favorite smell, and part of me wonders if Ben had the field mowed specially for this. I shake my head inwardly.

I think you meant 'especially', as 'specially' is kind-of slang, and as I have said before we want to be as accurate and professional (while putting across a realistic teenage point of view).
And being the grammar freak that I am, I did some research: http://englishplus.com/grammar/00000287.htm - which tells me that 'specially' means 'particular, distinguished in a distinct way, or designed for a particular purpose', and 'especially' means 'exceptional, noteworthy, or particular', so I think 'especially' would be better.

Nitpick!
Spoiler
Ben takes me to what must be the middle of the field because we had to walk a long way further.

This sentence is a little confusing. I don't think that you need 'further' in along side 'long way' as practically they mean the same thing. It disrupts the flow a little.

Nitpick!
Spoiler
He takes the lids off of plastic tubs, making a satisfying sucking sound.

I laughed here. Even though I know what you are trying to say, the way you have put it makes it appear that Ben is making the sucking sound. Why not put: 'which makes sucking noises'. Its just a thought though.

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THIIIIIIINGS!” We fall over on the grass from laughing so much. I have never felt so alive.

So, my question is: they begin sing, but what song or/ songs? I got a little curious there. Also, when Juno mentions 'these are my favorite things', is she talking about singing or the overall date? I'm just confused. Also, I don't think you need to put so many 'i's in 'things', but I know you have your own style of writing, so I'll let you decide.

Nitpick!
Spoiler
We fall over on the grass from laughing so much. I have never felt so alive.

I think you missed out the 'to' in 'fall over on the grass'.

I loved this! It was absolutely brilliant. The way you describe how Juno knows Ben is laughing, how tense Juno is when the two are left alone, how special she feels when she smells the cut grass and wonders how he knew... And down to the heart-racing moment when Ben asks how she became blind. And, seriously - my heart was pumping. I was literally hanging off the edge of my leather sofa, biting my nails while scrolling down on my phone to read more. I was so intrigued by this.
You have really developed your characters well, Ben is completely changed and he's not all stuttery - he's confident and treats her with dignity and care (and he's still sweet). Juno on the other hand, is very, very nervous. She knew that once they were alone that he'd ask her what happened and you did well and built up to that moment.
The flow of your story is still fast and well pace, I never cease to be interested in your story - you have laid things out well so your reader (me) will still have that urge to read on. For example; Juno's blindness. Still we do not know! I NEED TO FIND OUT! I must keep reading! *Sorry if I would kind of rabid here* I'm just so excited to read on!

Keep up the good work, your Highness.
Until next time!

Thank you so much sweet pea!!
I wasn't sure on "specially," or "especially," so thank you for clearing that up!
I am so glad you like it so far. Your enthusiasm makes my whole day better! <3 thank you!!

We shucks :) your welcome! Can' t wait for next times!

Hi there!

I can feel his head snapping back with the force of his laughter. I can feel the air reverberate with it, come alive with the sound of it.

That's the kind of description I was looking for. Now I understand how Juno can tell that his head snapped back when he was laughing. It gives me a much better picture that way.

Awwwww! I can't get over these two! They're so adorable together :)

Wow, Ben got super confident since the last time we saw him. And Juno is falling for him so quickly. A lot has changed in a day. I guess that just goes to show how crazy human emotions are, right? My favorite part about all this is how Juno is reacting to it. She's so cute and acting like Ben is her one and only love and she will cherish it forever. So cute. And so realistic too. Gosh, I can remember this is how I felt when I was together with my first boyfriend. I can totally relate.

As for the story as a whole, there isn't anywhere that you break flow or jump around. Even from the first few chapters I felt like I was reading a novel. That feeling is definitely still alive and well now. Your timing is right on cue and everything is happening the way it's supposed to happen (in the right order at least). I like the transition here between last chapter and this one. Obviously nothing important happened in this time since Juno jumped right over it.

Probably a strawberry, from what Asteria said once– Ben loves strawberries.

Hmm. Something about this sentence just doesn't seem right to me. I think it should be broken into two sentences. You could also rearrange the wording a bit, like this: "Probably a strawberry. Ben love strawberries -- Asteria told me that once". Something like that flows a lot better.

Other than that, I couldn't find anything that needs fixing in this chapter. I really enjoy the way you're writing this story. Keep it up. And I can't wait to see more of Ben and Juno ;)

Keep writing!
**Noelle**

Thank you thank you thank you!
I fixed that strawberry sentence, because I wasn't sure about it in the first place. Thank you for that suggestion!
As for the quickness of Ben's confidence and Juno's falling for him, it's been more than just a day since the last chapter... It's been four days! A lot can happen in four days :D Just making sure you didn't get too confused, because the way I'm breaking up the Lock-In might get a little confusing.
I'm so glad you said what you did about the flow of the novel, because that's my biggest fear. You just made me feel so much better! Ahhhh.
Thank you so much for your awesome review! I'll have the next chapter up in a couple of days and I'll keep you posted!!

Thewriter13 here to review. Ooh, I'm loving this relationship you've crated between Ben and Juno! The plot is coming along well, but I feel you could've added more...feeling to the story. So Ben remembers a time when Juno wasn't blind. How does she feel? You don't really take the time to develop the situation. I just think you could've had us feel what Juno was feeling. I know you mention she chooses her words carefully, but you don't say if she gets scared or nervous. I suggest you go into more detail about that, but it's only a suggestion :)
On to some nitpicks:
For the first 2 sentences did you intentionally have Juno repeat "I can't remember what's happened this week" twice? Just curious about that.
Also: "Emma helps me take my overnight back from above my locker. By now it’s about 4:00 pm." I think you mean "bag" here rather than "back" :)
I think someone has told you this before but you write "say" a lot and I feel you can use different words to paint a more vivid picture or give us an idea of what their voice sounds like. Just pointing that out but if someone else did mention it before then just ignore this. :)
There's repetition of Ben "leading" Juno to places. Perhaps using "guide" every now and then will break that repetition. Also how does Juno "feel" Ben shrug? It's not like he's hugging her this entire time, just holding her hand to lead her.
If you could enlighten me that would be great, just curious about that too.
I suggest going back and revising this and taking more time to lay out what is happening with more description. It feels a bit rushed (but that's just me)
But I love where you're taking this story!!! Post more, post more! :) that's an order ;)
Keep writing!

Thank you so much!
I fixed everything you suggested, because I did feel this was a bit rushed. Hopefully the added descriptions and a few changes I made will help!
As for the "says," I want to keep the dialogue about what's being said without the distraction of fancy dialogue attributions and crazy bells and whistles and whatnot. I like it straight and to the point, if you will.
As for the shrugging, have you ever held someone's hands while they're moving their shoulders? You can feel it, I assure you.
Thank you so much for your awesome review! It was so helpful; I love a solid review that tells me what I need to fix. I hope my changes helped!
Ahhhh I can't wait for you to read the rest!!! :D :D :D

Oh that makes sense, thanks for the clarification :D
And you're very welcome. You give good solid reviews too! (Still working on a piece that will punch you in the face) XD

Yaaaaaasssss! Punches in the face are my faves :D
