Juno
I wake up the next morning, feeling the warm breath of someone else on my face. It must be Emma, judging from the smell. Only Emma would eat horseradish on a hamburger. She’s weird like that. I put out a hand, feeling for her shoulder to roll her over. I can’t think straight with that smell in my face.
I remember what happened last night and groan aloud. Ben knows now. He didn’t ask anything of me on the ride back to school but I could feel the suspicion roll off his skin like too much cologne. So I had to tell him.
I was seven. My family and I were at this dinner party in New York for New Year’s Eve with all our family friends. There was a boy there that nobody seemed to know, a nineteen year old that started to talk to me and Asteria and Frey. He seemed totally nice, the way all strangers seem nice before they strike. We talked for a while about little-kid things; the way adults talk down to children. Everything was fine. He offered me some water, which turned out to be concentrated methanol. (I’ll spare you the details, but from what happened with Ben, I’m sure you can imagine what went down eleven years ago.) The next thing I know, I am on the floor of the garage, virginity-less and losing consciousness. The last things I remember are the screams of the adults and Frey’s hand on my shoulder. Apparently the guy ran away only to get caught by the police the very next day and thrown into jail for life. He was a thrice-convicted felon, as it happens.
I was rushed to the hospital but it was too late. The methanol was already in my bloodstream, killing what Frey and Asteria called my “seeing cells,” when they translated for me what the doctors told Mom and Dad. I would never see again and there was nothing they could do.
I went to therapy for about a year. Being seven, I didn’t fully understand what had happened to me, so therapy came and went without complaint. The doctors gave me some drugs to help me forget as much as possible, so it wasn’t hard to move on but what was hard was everyone’s reactions at school after it happened. I was called horrible, horrible things every day, and even the teachers whispered when I walked in.
The hardest part was dealing with the blindness itself. That took two or three years to really get used to, and even now, it’s still frustrating. I remember just getting so angry, and throwing things around my room, hoping something would break and give me some kind of closure.
Nothing ever did.
There were a lot of nights when Frey or Asteria had to sit with me until I fell asleep, a lot of nights when one of them had to calm me down. A few times, my parents would come in, but they thought sibling bonding during this period was crucial so it was usually Frey or Asteria and even once, little Arinna.
My parents moved us down here to Georgia, where no one would know our story and believe that I was born blind.
Emma and now Ben are the only people who know. And I’d like it to stay that way.
Ben seemed to take it well. After I explained the whole thing in the privacy of a supply closet, he hugged me for a long time. I’ll have to see how he’s doing today. I hear a few whispers preceding me as I rise and fumble my way with my stick through the mass of sleeping bags on the ground.
“Slut,” I hear someone whisper behind me. I must be hearing things.
“Can you believe...?” a girl’s voice is hushed by other voices before she can say any more. What’s going on?
“She was seven?” This time, it’s unmistakable.
I remember a little girl, freshly blinded, getting called those same names. I remember the soft whispers of teachers behind aged hands; I remember wondering whether they knew I could still hear them say those things about me.
I don’t know where I am in the auditorium now, thanks to the distractions. I can feel myself reeling, losing balance... I let out a little shriek.
If you hate falling as a seeing person, try falling as a blind person. You don’t know when to put out your hands to catch yourself.
So you don’t.
I can smell the age of the auditorium carpet and a few girls close by snigger as I try to get up. But I can’t get up because I can’t seem to think about anything but the pain in my face and the things I had just heard. I feel a hand on my back.
“Juno, are you okay?” It’s Emma’s voice.
“Bathroom,” I whisper, “now.”
She helps me to my feet and propels me out of the whispering room. A few seconds later, she holds the bathroom door while I feel my way inside without hitting anything. I can’t breathe.
“Th-they,” I stutter, “know ab-bout th-the thing.”
“What thing?” I hear Emma getting paper towels and wetting them. She puts one wad against my forehead and another against the back of my neck. Emma specializes in Calming People Down.
“How I g-got blind,” I say, trying to get a deep breath. “How do they know?”
“Whoa, whoa, wait, what makes you think they know?”
“I heard– Oh, God,” I slide down the wall to sit. Emma sits beside me. “I heard someone call me a... And another girl said something about seven... While I was walking to find Ben...” Someone walks in.
“Mrs. Highlander,” Emma says, “Juno is freaking out.”
“As she should,” says Mom. She sits on my other side, putting one arm around me and drawing me into a hug. “It’s okay, honey. It’s all going to be okay.”
For the first time in a long time, I start to cry a little.
“How did they know, Mom?” My voice sounds and feels ragged.
“I don’t know, sweetie,” she says, but something in her tone says, “I do know but I don’t want to tell you.” Maybe it’s better that I don’t know.
“All we can do is wait to see if it blows over,” Mom says, stroking my hair.
“Someone told them,” I say suddenly, wiping my stupid tears away furiously. “Only two people know...”
“I didn’t, Juno, I swear,” Emma pleads. My sixth sense tells me she’s not lying.
“I know you didn’t, Emma,” I say. I feel my eyebrows scrunch together. “Only one other person...” I try to stand up, but fall over. I groan and Mom helps me up before I can let the pain sink in.
“Who else knows, Juno?” Mom asks.
“I told Ben last night,” I say, feeling my way towards the door. “He triggered a major panic attack, so I had to tell him.” Mom doesn’t say anything, which means she doesn’t approve.
“You don’t think...” Emma says, holding the door open.
“I don’t know,” I say miserably. “I don’t want to think but no one else knows, other than Frey and Asteria. And they’d never tell, never.”
Mom shifts uncomfortably beside me while she leads me down a hallway.
“Juno, I think you need to sit and think before you do anything you’ll regret,” she says, sitting me on a bench.
“But, Mom, no one else but Emma and Ben know, and if it wasn’t Emma...” I hold my head in my hands. “How could he do this to me?”
I trusted him, I think. I told him everything, I thought he actually liked me. I bet it was just one of Jason’s stupid dares to see if I would tell him what happened and all it took was a stupid picnic and a little kiss and BOOM I cracked I trusted him I trusted the other one too and look where that got me...
I hear a door open and footsteps come down the hallway.
“Good morning, Mrs. Highlander,” Ben says. “Hey Emma, hey– Juno, what’s wrong?”
Emma stands up beside me and, for the first time in my life, I hear Emma raise her voice.
“Who do you think you are?” Emma shouts. “What do you think is wrong with her, you pathetic excuse for a person? You told everyone what she went through and now everyone is calling her horrible, horrible things, all because she trusted you!” Ben tries to interrupt but Emma plows right through. “And you know what? I told her not to trust you! I said you were just playing or doing one of your damned dares but she said she’d give you the benefit of the doubt! I knew you were just like the rest of them. You should be fucking ashamed of yourself.”
Emma grabbed my arm quite roughly and pulled me to my feet.
“Come on, Juno, I’ll take you home.”
“Thank you, Emma,” says Mom.
“But, Juno–”
“I don’t want to hear it, Ben,” I say. Emma leads me back to the auditorium, packs our things, ignoring the whispers, and we head for Emma’s car.
“WAIT!” I hear Ben behind us. “JUNO! WAIT!” Emma slams the trunk, leads me to the passenger side.
Emma leads me to the passenger side before putting our stuff in the trunk.
I buckle myself in as Emma starts the car and hear Ben’s voice get closer. But he’s too late.
He’s too late.

Hey Your Highness! I am back from my holiday and ready to catch up with all your wonderful chapters! (Someone sure has been busy posting.)
Sheesh, what a terrible misunderstanding. I feel so sorry for Ben because he actually didn't do anything, and I feel terrible that Asteria told her secret. On top of that, I am really mad at her mother for simply not telling her the truth! There was something iffy about that, but I will explain in later in the review. But really, Emma is such a kind and loyal friend. And sometimes people are so annoying. The things they call people who were only the victims, and not even the people who did anything wrong! Agh! You really tugged on my heartstrings here and had my emotions going everywhere. And I guess that just goes to show what amazing writing this is.
I wonder, how did Juno get separated from Asteria and Frey on the day of her incident? Would her other siblings really let her go off privately with a stranger when she only just met him? I mean, they must've all only been seven but they probably had instructions to stick together and everything. If they were simply busy and Juno went willingly, it would be nice to know what the guy said that convinced her to go with him...
Maybe when you tell the story we should see her presently telling it to Ben, and have the reactions in another chapter? The thing was, as you have it, I felt like it was just a big dump of backstory. And although, because it was information I've been craving for a long time, it didn't bother me too much. But really, it would be nice if you hid it in some dialogue and then we could also get to know some small details of Ben's reaction. When did he suck in a breath of surprise? Did he shift from the nervousness of being told? I wanted to know and putting it in that format could kill two birds with one stone.
Juno was a seven and eight year old when this happened, right? Unless the teachers and other adults were calling her names, then I am not sure any of the other kids would have something seriously terrible to call her because well, they don't know those words yet. And seeing as Juno wasn't even quite so sure what had happened yet because she was so young, I doubt that a lot of those kids could understand either. But maybe they wouldn't play with her because of they knew there was something different about her because of their parents? Or maybe they were repeating words they heard their parents say? It should be mentioned to clear things up.
Another small detail which would be nice to know about would be Juno dealing with her issue once she was older enough to actually understand what happened rape-wise and dealing with the consequences it comes with. Because although she had to deal with blindness at a young age, it would be interesting to see her coming to terms with the second part of the ordeal as well.
NO ASTERIA WHAT DID YOU DO
One thing that bothered me a lot was... would the mother who clearly knows Asteria was the one who told, let the innocent Ben take the blame. Although she feebly tries to change Juno's mind, she could've intercepted Emma or corrected her afterwards instead of just saying 'thank you'. I also really doubt she would let Ben take the blame seeing as she is the headmistress as well. It just seems completely wrong, and maybe it would be best if you made it so she didn't know who had let the cat out of the bag, otherwise it seems a bit unrealistic to me...
Aside from this, as always, a brilliant chapter! I am looking forward to when I get to read more

YOU ARE AN AMAZING WRITER
AND I HATE YOU FOR DOING THAT. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT... T>T THIS ISNT EVEN A FULL LENGTH REVIEW AND I'm TOO CRAZY RIGHT NOW TO FIX IT. IM GOING TO CRY :C. IM GONNA READ THE ENXT CHAPTER BECAUSE YOU HAVE SUCKED ME IN, AND THEN I'm GOING TO BED> MEANIE D: (MEaning, great work on the chapter and excuse all the typos in my reviews. I'm really tired but I cant stop reading this story. Have a nice day.)
I'm sorry, but is this even a review? I don't mean to be harsh, but you aren't stating anything about the story. It's mostly just rambling
I know. Sorry about that, but... did you read the story? I actually only clicked the review button because it's sort of automatic, so sorry about that. But the story is so sad T.T You aren't being harsh, Its just really late here and I need to get some sleep. Sorry about that. XD
Fiery Salutations
Firstly, I would like to congratulate you on making it so far! Many people have an excellent idea for a novel (or so they believe) but as soon as they start writing, they barely make it past the third chapter before becoming bored and moving on to another "excellent idea". And I see you split your chapters up into different parts; that is good! Not only does it show that you are capable of writing more than just four pages and calling it a chapter, but it also indicates that you have the wisdom to divide in the first place, since no one likes to read a super-long, neverending piece of writing. It also ensures that you get the maximum amount of reviews, and the readers get more points, so everyone is happy! Anyhow, on to your chapter.
Your characterisation throughout the chapter is excellently done. Even though it is chapter twenty one already, I still feel as if I know what's going on and I can follow the text without being confused (if I had been, it would have been my fault anyway). I can see/hear/feel Juno's despair in her dialogue, as well as Emma's rage when she confronts Ben. The mother is slightly confusing, but I could comprehend that she is trying to comfort her daughter - sitting on the ground beside her is definitely a good indication of how she does not shy away from any opportunity to relieve her daughter's sorrow. (I also saw that her surname is Highlander; it seems it is a recurring subject with you.
My only worry is that the narrative before the dialogue could possibly be an info-dump. I cannot say for sure, seeing as I haven't read the previous chapters, but I do not condemn your explanation at all, for had you omitted it, I would surely have been lost.
You have once again proven your skill as a writer. Brava!
by Team Rocket.
Some praise: Love your Hercules GIF! I'm obsessed with Percy Jackson and Greece, as I've told many people. Second, I appreciate Juno, Roman form of Hera. Again, Greece. Really interesting chapter. Is there more?
Chapter 22: Fradrian's Closet
Plenty more to come!
YESSSSSSS
Owch!
That hurt. Bad. Damn.
I guess it all culminates with everything that happened. I just wish he gets to explain himself before something more dramatic happens. I can only wish...
I am gonna be first!

Hey, IamTraunt here to review
Nitpicks!
Just to be grammatically correct, 'who' should be 'that'.
The comma in this sentence should be a semi colon (;).
I've had people say this to me in the past about a question mark and a exclamation mark - seeing as she is shouting as you mentioned you don't need a exclamation mark here.
This should be 'thrown into jail for life'.
Characters!
I like how you started off with Juno knowing the smell of Emma's breath. It is common fact that when you lose one of your senses, such as sight, all your other senses are enhanced. And you've mentioned previous also Juno's sense of hearing and how that helped her through the day. I think it's a nice and yet very weird development seeing as you mention horseradish xD I mean, who puts horseradish on a burger? Ketchup, maybe, but HORSERADISH? I also like how you tied this in with an earlier development of Emma's character. I know Emma is a black girl who is hilarious, bubbly and very strange in-your-face type of girl, and seriously, she was in Juno's face xD
I feel really sad. Having an insight on how Juno became blind and how Asteria has told that little group of people was just the start - but now... Ben is getting the backlash of it all even though he hasn't breathed a word about The Incident. Its horrible to know who is to blame and who isn't to blame but is getting all the hate for it. Its awful. I wanna cry.
Storyline!
I love what your doing here (even though it churns me up inside and makes me feel really, really sorry for Ben) - its great. You've come a long way since your first few chapters. It has increased in drama, the pace is faster, the characters are likable - everything about it is great. It keeps me on edge, I just want to keep reading and reading and reading until I finish it and am satisfied. By 'the last' did you mean last of the Lock-in? I hope so. YOU CAN'T END ON THAT! There would be so many questions unanswered. I would be distraught if I didn't see the consequences of Asteria's actions and the truth of how Ben is innocent.
Great work as usual! Keep up it up!
Oh, of course I mean the last of the lock-in! I might put a rape in my story, maybe a casual car accident or a post-apocalyptic power-crazed president, but I'd never leave you hanging.
Maybe.
Thanks for your review, Traunt! Congrats on being first XD I'll keep you posted!
I know!!! I'm so happy. Are you pleased with me? XD
Ha ha ha! "maybe a casual car accident or a post-apocalyptic power-crazed president, but I'd never leave you hanging." made me laugh.
And thanks! I'll keep on the look out!
*looks around*

Yeah
Because I was totally joking
Right
*grins*
I'd go for it. Post-apocalyptic president is an immensely great idea and a car crash ends with a BANG! (That was an awful pun...) xD
