Asteria

God, school is such a drag. As Queen Bee, at any normal school I'd play hooky. But Mom and Dad work at our satanic mistake for an educational center, so they have spies everywhere called "teachers." Their job is to pretend like they know things to brainwash students into thinking they're human beings. In reality, they are manipulative and cunning, trained to suppress us and skilled in the art of Failing Asteria. Mom is the Headmistress of Meltdown Academy and also the twelfth grade math teacher as it happens, which is why she has to leave way earlier in the mornings than we do. Dad is the Dean of Students. I have no idea what he does. But you get the idea.

So after I save Frey's ass for the first but definitely not the final time, I walk to Advanced Placement Calculus, which is in the South Curve of the building. Our school is round. We have a running joke that because our school is round, none of the students are sharp. It's pathetically true.

The only thing I'm really good at other than purposely losing at beer pong is math. Juno's a Fiction Writer and Part-Time Poet, Arinna is a Disney Princess Coloring Artist and Part-Time Pest, Frey is a Professional Dork, but I am Queen Bee and Full-Time Mathematical Genius. In my humble opinion.

“Asteria,” one of my not-so-sharp minions, Henrietta (an unfortunate name for an unfortunate girl) calls from down the hall. Her frizzy, mouse-brown hair is always in her face, and she pushes it out of the way hurriedly to talk to me.

“What’s up, Henny?” I ask, flicking a long lock of black hair off my shoulder.

“I j-just heard ab-bout Ben’s party last weekend,” she says excitedly. She always stutters when she’s excited, the poor dear. “Did Frey really make out with Adrian Kingston?” I roll my eyes, playing it cool. Play it cool, Asteria, I think to myself. You are the Queen Bee.

“Of course not, Henny,” I say casually. “What the hell is wrong with you, anyway?” Henny looks down at her knock-off off-season Toms. Of course Frey made out with Adrian Kingston at that party; Adrian is my best guy friend. He’s been gay for Frey since the third grade.

“Oh,” says Henny, clearly disappointed. She shuffles away to my other minions, probably letting them know the rumor isn’t true, of course. (A Note From Future Asteria: What I will learn later is that that rumor was circulated anyway, and it will all lead up to the Terrible Trio’s Worst Week Ever, which you will read about later).

Yeah, I pretty much have this stupid excuse for a college preparatory institution at my mercy. I get the choicest seat in the cafeteria (right next to Ben James, the Boy With Two Names, the guy who threw that party, whom you'll meet later before thanking his parents for blessing this earth with such a beautiful human being). I'm always the first to be asked to dances and formals, and all the gossip that runs through the rumor mill must come through me first for verification. As a result, I have the power to protect my siblings from humiliation. I quashed the rumor that Frey is gay (even though he is; he's not ready to come out just yet); I suppressed the notion that Juno cheats on tests; I've made certain that nobody really knows how Juno became blind. We've told everyone she was born that way. And we're sticking to that story.

Anyway, back to the action of my exciting life as a Prisoner of the Savannah, Georgia Educational System. I sit down in my usual spot at the back of the class, next to Oliver Garfield. Oliver Garfield is by far the nicest and the smartest guy in this sorry dump of a school. The only problem is that... well.... he's not exactly what I would call "physically attractive." Which is why I'm setting him up with Juno.

"Hey, Oliver," I say. I have a plan formulating about how to bring Juno and Oliver together. It'll take time and--

"WHy are you wearing sunglasses, Asteria?" he asks, feigning innocence. I fake glare at him before remembering he can't see my eyes. I pull the glasses down over my nose and give him an Asterian Death Stare. He puts his hands up, surrendering.

The bell rings and the Single Meanest Woman Alive walks into the room to start class. Mom calls attendance, passes out the syllabus and gives us a particularly dreary overview of the school year. She ends by explaining her class rules, which sound disturbingly like rules the Jews must have faced in the German concentration camps.

Finally, the bell rings again and we are free to live our lives of hopeless desperation. I turn to Oliver Garfield.

"So, Oliver," I say, trying to be casual. Come on, Asteria, I think. Just think how happy Juno will be. "Are you excited about First Friday?" The First Friday of senior year is the annual Senior Lock-In. It's always heavily chaperoned to deter the druggies and alcoholics, but we find our ways.

"Yeah," he says, brightening. He really can be kind of not ugly when he smiles. "Are you and Juno-and-Frey going to be there?" He speeds through Juno's name to keep the blushing to a minimum. I grin.

"Yeah," I say. "Juno said she's really excited to see you there." Lie.

"Really?" Oliver's eyes pop out of his less-than-beautiful head.

"Yeah," I say. "She said she really wants to get to know you better this year." Lie.

"Well tell her I'll see her Friday, then," Oliver says, standing.

"I will," I promise. Truth. Oliver walks out, grinning his face off. Mom gives me a Look.

"What?" I say.

"You're still wearing your sunglasses," Mom says in her Mom Voice. I groan.

"Okay, Mom, I--"

"No excuses," she said. "We want to help you, Asteria. But you have got to meet us in the middle."

I sigh. "So, what's my punishment," I say. It's not a question.

"There isn't one," Mom says, which nearly knocks breath out of my body.

"W-what?"

"Your punishment is ruining your own life with your decisions," she says simply, as if she didn't just metaphorically rip out my heart.

Can I just say, I don’t like being addicted to alcohol (“May you just say,” Juno corrects). I don’t like going to Support Groups every other Thursday at seven. I don’t like taking medication. I don’t like facing my nine-year-old sister when I come home at 2 AM on a Sunday morning and she’s waiting up for me with a cup of black coffee left over from dinner. I wish--Oh, my God, I can’t believe I’m going to say this--but I wish my parents would be more strict with me.

So I waited, hoping, for the punch line. "But the next time you walk into school hung over, you will lose all your Senior Privileges for the rest of the year, understood?" Oh, there it is.

"Whatever," I huff. I walk out, teenager-style, and kind of wish I didn't have to live with this addiction.

But who am I kidding? I can't break this.

I walk to my next class, Advanced Placement British Literature and Composition. At least Juno will be there; she always knows what to say.

Yay, the parents have arrived! You can ignore my note about their absence in a previous critique. Except, I do think you could have mentioned them in earlier chapters, even as a brief note.

Here are some opportunities for improvement:

"WHy are you wearing sunglasses, Asteria?"

I found this a strange way to emphasise a word, capitalising only two letters. Writing the whole word in italics might be better. Speaking of italics, the thoughts that you put in html code to convert them to italics don't work, specifically for submissions. There should be a button to do the same thing if you got to the edit section.

Favourite moments:

We have a running joke that because our school is round, none of the students are sharp. It's pathetically true.

he's not exactly what I would call "physically attractive." Which is why I'm setting him up with Juno.

I also found the last section when she interacted with her mother really fascinating. The fact that she isn't proud of her status as an alcoholic, the fact that she sees herself as the wild teenager who needs more reigning in, and the fact that Asteria gets her own little poignant sad self reflective moment, which balances out the humour well.

Good job!

"she has to leave way earlier in the mornings"
*I would take out "way" because it sounds kind of lazy and unprofessional. You could try putting in a synonym.

"at her knock-off off-season Toms."
*too many "off"s

*It sounds kind of odd when you add in things like 'from the future Asteria'. I would maybe take those kind of things out because your writing no longer flows.

"WHy are you wearing sunglasses"
*Why are you . . .

""Yeah," he says, brightening.

"She said she really wants to get to know you better this year." Lie."
*way too many "yeah"s and "really"s

Another great chapter! Just keep in mind what I said.

Woo Hoo!!!!
A longer chapter this time! Awesome, It's everything that i wanted :D And... "satanic mistake for an educational center" Is the best name for a school that I have ever heard! Your characters are fantastic, Royal! Great work on the all too true description of school :P. Its sort of funny that Asteria is constantly drunk. There were a few little grammar mistakes like other people mentioned, but come on. who cares about THert? (<Done on purpose, dont judge)

Hey! IamTraunt here!
I have been sooo looking forward to reading this!

Corrections

So, I know people have beaten me to this chapter - that's my fault because I've been away - but this is not about me! This is about your amazing piece of work!

"WHy are you wearing sunglasses, Asteria?" he asks, feigning innocence.

I think you did this by accident. I'm pretty sure you mean 'Why'. Positive.

Characters

From Asteria being too hung over to speak and give her P.O.V to the reader to saving Frey to (again saving Frey from humiliation) Asteria is really digging deep, expressing herself to us. She emphasizes why she doesn't like being addicted by saying how she does not like her sister waiting for her in a morning while she has been out, drinking herself silly. You don't just simply put 'I don't like being an alcoholic', you explain why she doesn't like it. Well done!
Also, I like how you showed us readers how Asteria 'stamps' out these rumours. Its like she rules the school, we know she's popular, and popular people start rumours and also end them. You made that realistic. (And you put Henrietta straight, lol).
Additionally, you did well introducing Oliver. It made me laugh actually because I can just imagine this geeky teenaged boy blushing bright red when Asteria is playing with his heart strings. She's like the cupid or a match maker (it reminds me of Emma) as she makes things up to get Oliver's attention and he now thinks Juno like him. I can't wait to see how that turns out!

Storyline

You have really picked up the pace with your story. You have added a scene for the reader to look out for - which is Juno and Oliver of course - as well as spurring the reader on as we want to find out how Juno became blind! I can't wait to find out!
I know this is a bit random, but your layout reminds me of the book 'My Sister's Keeper'. It has various different character's telling the story and the lengths vary from short to long. And it is good to use numerous characters, as you get to see different perspectives and P.O.V - it allows the reader to view a different angle of the story.

Sorry, I've babbled on a little bit! But I've got so much to say because I enjoy your story so much!
Good job! Can't wait to read more!

Hi there! Noelle here for a Review Day review!

Yesh! It's heeerrreeee! I've been waiting for the next chapter :)

The bell rings and the Single Meanest Woman Alive

The part I underlined should not be capitalized. Proper nouns get capitalized, and this is not a proper noun. Do you see the 'the' right before it? That's a key that it's a description and maybe an opinion and not an actual title. If you had said "The bell rings and Single Meanest Woman Alive..." then it would be capitalized. But that doesn't really make much sense, does it? So make sure to keep stuff like that lowercase. You do the same thing here:
skilled in the art of Failing Asteria.

Although this is a little different, but still uses the same principles. The word 'failing' should be lowercase. Failing Asteria seems like it should be a title of something, but it's really not. It's just her way of describing things so it should be lowercase.

Your writing style has gotten a lot better since the last chapter you posted. Not that those chapters were bad. It's just that you seem to have tightened up your skills just a tad. We really get inside Asteria's head and really get to know her better. I love her sarcastic nature and just that overall feeling that she doesn't really care about much. You've done a great job giving us some important insight into her character.

The only thing that kind of bothers me about Asteria is that she seems to have it...perfect at school. Minus the whole part about her failing and running into her parents all the time. But the rumors? How was she able to squash them so easily? Rumors run wild and rampant, even after someone proves that they're not true. I find it hard to believe that people were talking about Frey, then Asteria said it wasn't true, and then they all stopped. I can believe the part where she hasn't told anyone the real reason that Juno is blind, but getting rid of the rumors is a little hard to believe.

And along with that, you've gotten rid of some perfectly good problems in your character's lives! Frey is gay. Okay. So he's probably thinking it all through day in and day out wondering why he's so different and what everyone will think when he finally comes out (I'm just making a hypothetical situation here). That's enough trouble in it's own right, but what about how the kids treat him at school? Now everything is just hunky dory at school? I feel like you could really dive into Frey's character if you let him...suffer a bit? Do you get what I'm saying? I always say that people show their true colors when they're put in tough situations. It's great for some character development.

Other than that, there really isn't anything else I have to say about this chapter. I think Asteria's voice is really strong in this. She's officially become my favorite character. So, how many more times is she going to come into school hungover? I feel like it's going to be a lot even though she has that punishment looming over her. She just seems like that kind of kid.

As always, keep me updated when the new chapters come out!

Keep writing!
**Noelle**

The capitalizing thing is something all the characters do; it's a little mannerism I've picked up from John Green's TFIOS. It's supposed to be the title of something--something that only exists in the characters' minds. I'm not explaining this correctly...but I can't get rid of it because it's part of the characters' voices.

I'm super duper super duper super DUPER glad you picked up on how great Asteria has it at school--or so it seems. The next chapter from Juno's point of view will show you that Asteria is not as on top of things as she thinks... one of the themes is that Asteria is really the blind one in this story. In reality, as Juno will let you know, is that none of those rumors were really stamped out. They were just kept from Asteria.

Oh, don't you worry about those sufferings; they are on their way, I assure you. You see, Asteria doesn't know about her siblings' sufferings and lives because she is too busy dealing with her own, which you will see later on. This chapter was honestly a bit of a filler chapter, a bridging chapter. Next chapter will really knock some of your questions on their backs.
I'm really glad you took the time to point this stuff out because I was beginning to feel that surreality even as I was writing it. Don't worry, it'll get worse, I promise! :P

Hey your Highness! Thanks for reminding me to read this :)

Happy Review Day!

I don't have much to say on this chapter that needs improving, mostly because it was awesome! I totally understand what Asteria is saying about her mother being headmistress because my mother was headmistress of primary school when I was there and it was really... weird O.o At least I am in secondary now! I love her voice and how much she cares for her siblings, squashing all the things she thinks her siblings don't want them to know yet!

I think it would've been nice to see it in action as well, see her playing the role of the Queen Bee. Have someone rushing up to her and asking if the new gossip is true or not, some big thing that has happened on the first day of school. There's always drama on that day anyways xD So, here is another thing of showing and not just telling, so we get to see her in her element.

Their job is to pretend like they know things to brainwash students into thinking they're human beings.

I suggest you cut the 'like' out of this sentence.

I also like how you continued the mystery of Juno's blindness... and loving round school sharp students joke! xD Made me laugh!

I also thought this would be the perfect opportunity to show more of Asteria's own thoughts when it comes to the addiction problem. I wonder why she lets everyone know about it as well? How does she feel with it being out in the open? Aside from that, when her mother says we'll meet you half way and all, that was the opening for when you show whether she is for or against this, thinks she is capable of quitting or not, and maybe you would show us her motivation to do so? Why did she even start in the first place? Lots of questions...

I have to run to church D: I hope this was helpful although short!

Deanie x
want to know more thoughts from Asteria's point of view on addiction

Thank you so much! I'll get right on that because I personally thought this chapter could use more action too. I just didn't know exactly what it needed. Thank you for showing me!
So I need to write Asteria's POV on her addiction, her mother's thoughts, some Queen Bee action... Thank you thank you thank you! I was so lost.
