Frey

Juno has safely been delivered into the heavily-muscled arms of Ben James the Boy With Two Names, Asteria is probably already on her second glass of smuggled vodka-in-a-water-bottle, and Arinna is at home with Dad. Mom has volunteered to chaperone the Lock-In, which doesn’t seem to have an effect on Asteria, and makes Juno feel way more at ease.

Juno hasn’t spent a night away from the house since she was seven, when The Incident happened.

I walk past Emma, hoping to get by unnoticed, but unfortunately, she sees me.

“Frey!” she squeals, leaving her squabble of friends to clutch me in her demon fingers before I can get away.

“Hi, Emma,” I say weakly. I look for a way to avoid this conversation, then I stop myself. Emma just wants someone to talk to. I feel a little ashamed, so I ask her a question for once. “How are you?”

Immediately, Emma responds, “Well, I’m okay. Juno is hanging out with Ben and my friends and I are having trouble deciding what we want to do.”

For a second, Emma looks really sad, like she doesn’t know what to do with herself. Maybe all she really needs is someone to want to hang out with her instead of the other way around.

Frey, no, I think to myself. Don't hang out with her out of pity.

But she needs someone, myself replies. Are you really going to let her be miserable? I mean, what has she ever done to you but like you? What would Adrian do?

I knew the answer to that one.

I can’t believe I’m about to do this.

“Why... why don’t we do something, Emma?” I hear my voice ask her. Emma’s face lights up in a way I didn’t notice before, probably because I’ve spent so much time trying not to make eye contact with her. “As friends,” I remember to add in time.

“That’d be really nice, Frey,” she breaths, so quiet I can barely hear her over the noise in the hallway. I consult the chart. There’s freeze tag in the quad, dodgeball in the wrestling room, basketball in the gym, soccer on the... baseball field? I knit my eyebrows and keep reading. Kickball on the lacrosse field. The art of making the perfect s’more in the art studio. Water gun fight in the swimming pool?

“How about the water gun fight?” I say, stabbing a finger into the paper.

“Sounds like fun, but I didn’t bring a bathing suit,” Emma says.

“Who says you need a bathing suit?” I ask. I find myself actually grinning, as if Emma’s voice doesn’t haunt my dreams at night. I take her by the arm (not the hand, Frey, you are a proud gay man) and half-drag her across campus to the pool. Emma laughs and feigns resistance the whole way, crying out for various people to save her. I laugh with her and we both laugh crazily until we finally reach the pool. Inside, two teams are gearing up for an epic battle of will. Water guns are strewn all across the floor. I motion for Emma to stay quiet, and we sneak in behind the two teams. I bend down and grab two big water guns from the pile as quietly as I can. I hand one to Emma and motion for her to follow me behind the group of students wearing red pennies. I flash her a grin and scream at the top of my lungs.

“WE’RE GOIN’ ROGUE!”

I start shooting everyone in sight, blasting water in every direction. Emma follows my lead, screaming out an Indian cry. The two teams scream back and launch into battle. Emma and I are back to back, fending off the invaders, clearly outnumbered and out-gunned but refusing to go down without a fight just the same.

At the end of the legendary Battle of Meltdown, Emma and I are sopping wet and breathless from laughter. We stumble around campus from activity to activity, looking for friends but mostly talking. Emma is surprising in a lot of ways. We decide to ask each other random questions to get to know each other better.

“What’s your favorite...” I think for a moment. We’re sitting in the quad munching some deliciously made s’mores and passing questions back and forth. “Animal?”

“Rabbit,” Emma says immediately, a smidge marshmallow hanging off her lower lip. “They’re so cute and fluffy and... Oh, I just love looking at them. How about you?”

“Probably the lion fish,” I say after I’ve swallowed the last of my s’more.

“The lion fish?” Emma asks, her mouth full. “Why?” Oh gosh, here I go.

“They have these awesome stingers that will poison and paralyze their prey,” I say, accidentally alliterating. “And they’re striped, and I love stripes, and they just look like the most bad-ass fish like, ‘Don’t come near me, peasant, I’m a lion fish, I will tear your tiny peasant fish head from your tiny peasant fish body!’” Emma almost chokes on her s’more from laughing. I laugh with her and then we move on to the next question.

“What’s your biggest dream?” I ask her.

“Probably to be a doctor,” she says after a moment. “I love helping people, but I really want to make more of a difference, ya know? I mean, helping Juno is great and all, but it’s not, like, saving her life or anything.” I give her A Look. “What?” she asks.

“You are saving her life,” I insist. “You’re too close to see what an impact you’re making on her life. I mean, before you, I was going to have to follow her everywhere and be her lackey.” Emma looks hurt. Her eyebrows knit together. I know that look. I’ve done it before.

“Her what?” I realize my mistake.

“I didn’t mean–”

“Oh, you meant it,” Emma says, getting up to leave. I catch her arm.

“Wait, Emma, I’m sorry.”

“Sorry for what?” she asks, tearing up. “Sorry for me, that I’m stuck being Juno’s lackey? Sorry for me because I apparently don’t have a life, according to you?”

“No,” I say. “I’m sorry I called you a lackey.”

“Whatever, Frey,” Emma says. She turns away and gets lost in the coming darkness of the quad. I sit down where we were and think.

Everything was going so well, I think. We were becoming friends. I could’ve really gotten to know Emma. What happened?

I’m thinking so hard that I don’t notice when Adrian sits next to me.

“Hey,” he says, nudging me. The sparks I feel when he touches me shake away my thoughts.

“Sorry, I was just...”

“I saw.”

“You did?” Adrian nods, and I groan. “I was so stupid.”

“Nah, you weren’t stupid,” Adrian replies, putting a hand on my back. That feels so good. “You just didn’t think, that’s all.”

“That’s kind of the definition of stupid, Adrian,” I say, chuckling in spite of myself.

“She’ll get over it,” Adrian says after he has a laugh.

“I hope so,” is my only reply. A silence rules our ears for a second or two. Finally, Adrian speaks.

“Wanna go play some ping pong in the activity center?”

“I don’t play ping pong,” I say. Adrian’s look questions me. “I rule ping pong.”

“Oh, it’s on!” Adrian laughs, helping me up.

“First one to the activity center gets first serve,” I yell, taking off toward the building.

I don’t see Emma behind me, crying into Henrietta Harlow’s shoulder. Maybe if I do, if I go to Emma and stop her from falling into Henrietta’s big-mouthed clutches, I might just save all of us a lot of trouble.

But I don’t.

So it goes.

" of Ben James the Boy With Two Names, "
* You should put a comma in front of Boy

"Juno has safely been delivered into the heavily-muscled arms of Ben James the Boy With Two Names, Asteria is probably already on her second glass of smuggled vodka-in-a-water-bottle, and Arinna is at home with Dad."
*Is there anyway you can make this sentence shorter? Or separate it into three sentences? I get what you are trying to say, but it seems like a bit of a run-on.

*I really like the part about Frey and the other girl during the water fight. It really shows another part of Frey's character.

"fluffy and... Oh, I just love"
*don't capitalize 'oh'

"I give her A Look."
*just a typo with 'a'

"I sit down where we were and think."
*This would flow better if you reword this like "I sit back down and think."

*Nice ending . . . makes the reader want to know what's going to happen next.

Hi there!

Ugh! Everything was going so well! And then Frey just had to say that, didn't he. Now everything is ruined. Guess that's why this is called 'Things Fall Apart'.

The thing I like about this chapter is that we learn more about Emma. Leading up to this chapter I felt like she was just another face in the crowd. I knew that she was Juno's friend and that they were always together. But we never really got a good look at her personality and how she is (I accredit that to the fact that it's written in 1st person from the triplet's POV). But in this chapter we really learn something about her. We learn that she feels pretty left out some of the times. And it seems like she feels left out most of the times. So when Frey invites her to hang out, she's more than happy to.

I take her by the arm (not the hand, Frey, you are a proud gay man)

See, this is one of the quirks I mentioned that I liked in an earlier review. It's just a little comment, a thought really, but it mean so much. That's the one thing I love about literature in general. One short line can make a whole chapter. Or even a whole book really. And lines like the one I quoted just make me love Frey even more.

I don’t see Emma behind me, crying into Henrietta Harlow’s shoulder.

Yeah, of course you don't... >< GO APOLOGIZE! Sorry, had a little moment there.

So another great chapter here. I was really hoping to see more Ben and Juno action, but I guess you're just gonna leave us in suspense for a while. *sigh* But anyway, I really enjoyed reading this chapter. You're keeping the flow and the style of your writing consistent which is a huge plus, for obvious reasons. And now I think we've gotten a good look at all of the characters. Except maybe Adrian. But he's just been thrown into the story so I'm sure we'll get more about him in later chapters.

Keep writing!

Hey there your Highness!

This chapter was no less as great as the rest of them! It was awesome to see Frey giving Emma a chance after all, and making that mistake. It's a mistake anyone could easily have made as well. I think this also shows us a bit how Adrian is good for him, seeing as he wouldn't have taken that chance if it hadn't been for him. But I think things are going to be difficult for Adrian and Frey very soon... One more thing I loved! The little hint at Juno and Ben's private event, seeing as soccer (gah, football) is being played on the baseball field. Another thing that made me feel so British was the whole s'mores thing. Someone on here explained what they were to me and they sound utterly... horrible xD

“That’d be really nice, Frey,” she breaths

This is a common mistake I often see on YWS. But the thing is, to breathe is the verb, the actual action. A breath is the thing a person takes in when they are completing the action. I hope this shows the difference :) Either way, what you are looking for here is the verb, so this should be breathes.

I wanted to see more of Emma and Frey hanging out! I adored the we're going rouge moment, and with the aid of the character descriptions I could clearly see them doing it as well xD It would've been awesome to see them doing just one more activity or something, but that's up to you.

The way you made their conversation sound, it was almost like it just ran off questions. How about Frey starts with something along the lines of, I don't know you very well, you know. And Emma goes: well what do you want to know? And then that would give a valid reason for the direct questions back and fourth, without any joint conversation making it realistic. Or they could be playing the random question game. Either way, connect the conversation a bit more, or give a reason for the backfire questions!

Maybe if I do, if I go to Emma and stop her from falling into Henrietta’s big-mouthed clutches, I might just save all of us a lot of trouble.

But I don’t.

So it goes.

Seeing as is all in the 'would be' tense who knows what tense that is called, then that needs to be worded differently. Here's the version it should be.

Maybe if I did, if I went to Emma and stop her from falling into Henrietta’s big-mouthed clutches, I might just save all of us a lot of trouble.

But I didn't.

So it goes.

Also, the so it goes seems kind of odd. Goes where? I wanted to know! Maybe, if you don't want to specify, maybe just say, 'So Emma falls right into her clutches' or something. You know what I mean ;)

I have to backtrack and read the hidden chapter xD Slow down with all these awesome righting ;) Just kidding ^.^ Keep up the awesome novel. I love this <3

Deanie x

Agh, the "breathes," thing was an autocorrect on my laptop! I hate when people mix up the two. XD
As for adding things, while I was writing this, I thought it was actually going on too long... I'll consider adding some activities.
The dialogue thing is something I can totally fix! I'll get right on that.
So it goes is a reference to Kurt Vonnegut's book Slaughter-House Five, which is said in the novel every time someone dies.

Thank you so much for your lovely review, Deanie! <3

Hey! IamTraunt here with a late review! (Sorry!)

Nitpicks!

Mom has volunteered to chaperone the Lock-In, which doesn’t seem to have an affect on Asteria, and makes Juno feel way more at ease.

Oops! This is the wrong 'affect'. It should be 'effect'.

I look for a way to avoid this conversation, then I stop myself.

You need to put 'and then' to make this sentence flow a little better.

There’s freeze tag in the quad, dodgeball in the wrestling room, basketball in the gym, soccer on the... baseball field?/quote]
'Dodgeball' isn't all one word, its separate.

That feel so good.

This should be 'feels'.

“Wanna go play some ping pong in the activity center?”
Not sure how you spell it in America, but it should be 'centre'.

Spoiler
The art of making the perfect s’more in the art studio. Water gun fight in the swimming pool?

Um... what's a s'more? O.o I'm not up-to-date with all the American phrases and foods and activities.

Characters!

Wow, such (another) beautiful chapter of All Things Fall Apart! You said I'd get to learn more about Emma and here we are - you cease to amaze me! This was surely a great insight into Emma. You create compassion within the reader from the beginning to the end of this wonderfully crafted piece. You purposefully develop this sympathy for Emma to make us like her, however it does slightly feel annoyed at Frey. Even though your crush is asking you to play Ping Pong, Frey, you should say sorry! I love you dearly, but that wasn't fair. But this also reflects on day to day life as were all imperfect and make mistakes, which shows us the development on Frey as you use him to display realism. I still feel sorry for Emma though - no matter how much I love Frey.

Storyline!

Yay! Lock-in! Whoop-whoop! Ahem. What exactly is a Lock-in though? Is it just some after school activity or some sort of party? I wish we had things like that our school, seriously, sure Prom's great - but I've got a whole year to wait.
Anyway - this is a really good chapter (as I have said hundreds of times), and you gives us something to enjoy, such as the beginning of a new friendship between Frey and Emma. But then you include some drama where Frey accidently offends Emma after he has just had the most amazing water gun fight where they go rogue (I laughed so much). This also reflect realism as this is what teens do - go mental. Um, I mean... Have lots of fun. (...Maybe I'm the only one who goes absolutely berserk).
Really great chapter. I loved it.

Till next time, Your Highness. *bows*

Wow! Thank you so much! This was so helpful and that "affect," vs. "effect" thing is the worst ugh I hate it so much!
I'm really glad you guys got to see Emma in action. She's got a big heart so I hope I proved that! As for Frey, yeah, he's a little flawed, but aren't we all? Plus, that's actually something I would totally say by accident!
As for the American customs, a s'more is a type of dessert. You take a graham cracker, put a roasted marshmallow and a piece of chocolate on top, and then top that with another graham cracker. It makes a little, messy sandwich of deliciousness!
A Lock-In is basically what it sounds like: the seniors stay the night at school! It's heavily chaperoned, never fear. I just haven't really put in too many teachers yet.
I'm so glad you like it so far! I'll let you know when I'm posting next! <3

No problem! Anything for you :) I am just being totally truthfully in saying... I love your story. I cant wait till it gets published. Thanks. I'lll look out for it.

Way to go Royal! This chapter was really good and it kinda took a break from all the seriousness going on between the characters. This felt like a short humorous chapter that will lead to (oh no) more serious things (as you foreshadow towards the end)
You did an excellent job revealing more about Emma, her feelings, her hopes, etc. But as ConfusedGlasses mentioned, how was Frey able to be himself with Emma that quickly? After all he always tries to avoid her and then all of sudden BOOM he hangs out with her. I understand you say 'I can't believe I'm about to do this." But perhaps start off their time together slow, like he's unsure and then maybe have the water fight break the ice or something. I don't know it just felt too good to be true for Emma that all of sudden Frey likes hanging out with her. Just work on maybe slowing it down. But you don't have to do that, it's only a suggestion.
I love all the funny jokes in this chapter (ie the different sports in the different areas) XD
Keep writing Royal! I want moreeeedeee :D

Alright I added in Frey's thought process to slow down the pace a little. Does that help?
Thank you so much for your lovely review!! :D

I love it even more. Gosh you're such a good writer!

YAY! Congratulations on completing another chapter Your Highness!
I have to say you sort of captured the image of Frey just like I imagined him. And Emma too. By the way, this "I don't see it" thing is going to cause some trouble right? Oh my God I am SO gonna stick with you till the end buddy.
I don't think i need to quote any nitpicks cause there aren't any that I spotted. There aren't any things I'm having trouble understanding either. Except this one teeny tiny itty bitty thing. Frey is a homo. And he didn't really like all the attention from Emma. So, how come he was able to be so free with her? Maybe it's a natural thing since he has to deal with the two Goddesses. Maybe it's not. Maybe you cold elaborate.
Well that's it. Keep writing!

Thank you dearie! I added a little blurb of thought from Frey to help slow down their hang-out a little. Does that help? Do I need more?
Thank you for your fabulous review m'dear!
