Fool's Gold

In Poetry

Pay me not with compliments;
My soul will not believe them.
Show me not your praises, for
My eyes will never see them.

Tell me, do you laugh with me?
Do we share in our mirth?
Or is this your own trickery,
Illusive love and worth.

They call me the comedian,
I call myself the clown.
Do you laugh in my cleverness?
Or laugh when I fall down?

I'll never know the truth of it,
Trapped in this mask of guile;
But whether by my bunk or wit,
At least I've made you smile.

Hi Chaser, Felistia here with a review on your poem.
Firstly happy review day.

I like the theme behind the poem and the rhymes really help it move along nicely. Your lines also seem to be about the same size and have well placed punctuation. As far as I see there are no grammar mistakes and punctuation problems.

I do have a few nit-picks though. I do agree with Chekwube though, I don't like the end line. It doesn't seem to fit well with the rest of the poem.
Over all it is a well written poem with a good message behind it. Well done and I hope to see more of your work soon. Have a great day\night.

Hello Chaser,

I was surprised by the last line. Does that mean the speaker is content with the fake smiles?

This is an excellent poem. The title, the structure, the diction (like that of an actor indeed), the message, the twists. This poem can stand anywhere for itself. I can imagine the speaker onstage performing this.

I like the line, 'Do we share in our mirth?'

Still I don't like how it ended, 'at least I've made you smile'. Or maybe I should like it because the speaker calls himself a clown, and can afford to say that their eyes don't see praises but they see the smiles!

Chekwube.
