I wondered what depression looks like,
I saw it in movies, maybe that’s it.
They say it leads to death sometimes,
But I don’t know what it really is.
If I had known I’d be like this,
I’d have warned the younger me—
“Whatever you do, it won’t be enough,
And life won’t get any better, you’ll see.”
If I knew more, maybe it’d hurt more,
Maybe I’d break before I began.
They say not eating, not talking, not sleeping—
That’s depression. But that’s just one plan.
There are people who smile the widest,
Laugh the loudest, shine so bright.
But inside, they’re barely breathing,
Fighting battles every night.
Surrounded by people, yet so alone,
No one sees what’s truly wrong.
“You have it all,” they often say,
“So why are you feeling so gone?”
I don’t know why I feel this way,
I wish I knew a long time ago.
But now, the colors fade to grey,
And everything feels hollow.

Nice! I'm new here - this is literally the second work I'm seeing - so excuse my sloppy reviewing skills, please.
What I liked: "If I knew more, maybe it’d hurt more,
Maybe I’d break before I began"
That rings true, how knowledge is sometimes powerlessness. The letter B in "break before I began" is almost onomatopoeic, like the words are breaking over and over even as they are said. That "Maybe", though, is significant: this poem isn't entirely hopeless. I love how you've managed to convey the emotions without cheapening them, yet there's a very subtle hint that not everything is dark: "now, the colors fade to grey". That "now" suggests it wasn't always this way, so the colors could return, Everything "feels" hollow, but we know it's solid and that reality has
meaning.
Suggested improvements: None that I can think of. If I had to write something I'd replace "shine so bright" with "shine the brightest"... but that's just stylistic.
I really enjoyed this.

The Empress states that:
"I liked this poem, it is short, but still enjoyable. I think that whoever wrote this must've had experience writing poetry before, particularly I liked the 'whatever you do it won't be enough...' stanza. It fits the feeling of helplessness/despair of the narrator."

this was a glitched message, please see other text.
This captures a certain feeling of hollowness which is really exemplified in the regular structure which I think was good choice.
The regular rhyme, consistent line length and stanza length creates a sense inevitability. It pairs with the slow escalation of the depression (which is often how depression is).
You could branch out and try some differing imagery- I'm not sure as I mainly read poetry not write it.
overall, I think this captures and appeals to the experience of falling into depression and isolation. I appreciate this for voicing and spreading awareness to that.
I have got many ideas how to improve after I read what I post....thank you for the suggestion will keep them in mind
Hello! I'm going to leave a quick review.
First off, thanks for sharing this work, which I presume is based on personal experience. It's always helpful when people help spread awareness.
I noticed this wasn't tagged or labeled as poetry, but it does take a poetic format. Then I noticed there is something of a rhyme scheme. Good job with keeping the consistent format of four lines per stanza. That gives everything a clean appearance and makes it easier to read.
With that being said, I'd encourage you to work on rhyming, as well as rhythm and meter. I find that a lot of people who write poetic stuff could use some work in this area, so don't feel like it's just you. I need to perfect this aspect of poetry myself! I frequently have to look up the difference between rhythm and meter in order to refresh my memory, and while my poetry doesn't always stick hard and fast to "perfect" or "proper" rhythm and meter, it is a very important part of poetry that really makes things flow.
The sentiments you expressed here are realistic. It's easy to wonder what could be different if situations were different. It's also easy to feel like everything is off and people don't understand.
In the next to last stanza, the third line says, "So why are you feeling so gone?"
In context of what is being expressed here, I think I basically get the point of what you're trying to say, but that line also doesn't exactly make sense. I can see that you probably worded it this way in order to accomplish the rhyme, but it just doesn't sound or feel like something someone would actually say. Or rather, it's not *how* someone would say it. It just feels unnatural. Maybe you could think about how to re-word it and still accomplish what you're trying to get across.
Once again, thanks for sharing this work. I think the last stanza pretty much sums up a lot of what people who struggle with depression feel - the way everything feels hollow, colorless, etc. I appreciate that you have put into words this vulnerable human experience. Keep writing!
Thank you so much Winny for taking ypu are valuable time to review my work.....once again thanks for the suggestions
