Shhh...It's a Secret

E - Everyone

In Self

There was a time when I carried a secret so heavy, it felt like it would crush me. It wasn’t something terrible, not something that could hurt anyone—but it wasn’t me. And that was enough to make it unbearable.

It happened when I was a teenager, a time of reckless choices and quick regrets. I did something—something small, yet shameful in my own eyes. At first, I pushed it aside, thinking it didn’t matter. But the guilt had a way of creeping in, whispering at odd hours, reminding me that I had stepped away from the person I thought I was.

I made the second mistake soon after. I told someone. Someone I trusted. A best friend. They listened, nodded, and promised to keep it safe. For a while, it seemed like the burden had lightened. I thought, Maybe sharing was the right choice.

I was wrong.

One day, my secret wasn’t mine anymore. It became a story passed around, a tool for someone else’s gain. A joke in hushed whispers. A weapon in cruel hands. I lost control over it, and worse, I lost control over how people saw me.

The betrayal cut deeper than the guilt ever did. I wanted to explain myself, to tell my family before they heard it from someone else—but fear kept me silent. Fear of disappointment, fear of rejection. And so, I let it spread, let it ruin things, let it take pieces of me until I wasn’t sure what was left.

By the time I tried to take control, it was too late. My family found out, not from me, but from voices that twisted the truth. The silence I had once thought was my shield became my downfall.

Looking back, I wish I had done things differently. I wish I had gone to my family first. Maybe they would have been angry, disappointed—but they would have stood by me. Because that’s what family does.

Secrets have a strange power. The small ones weigh on you, the big ones can destroy you. But sometimes, the real danger isn’t in the secret itself—it’s in who you trust with it.

And some things? Some things are better left unsaid.

hi alwaysea, i didn't ever think i would be doing another review, but then I saw this piece I instantly felt a connection to it because I had an experience very similar to yours. I also trusted somebody with my secrets once, and they also betrayed me. Maybe I deserved it then, but it still hurt deeply.

So, here's my review.

I think you expressed the feeling of being betrayed really well in this short piece. The analogies you made flowed beautifully and connected with all the emotions perfectly without sounding generic or overbearing.

"Secrets have a strange power. The small ones weigh on you, the big ones can destroy you. But sometimes, the real danger isn’t in the secret itself—it’s in who you trust with it."

This line was probably my favorite, and it concluded the piece well. It was a very powerful and poignant message that I saw myself in - it perfectly represents a summary of everything that has happened in this piece and will happen.

"A weapon in cruel hands. I lost control over it, and worse, I lost control over how people saw me."

I really like your use of metaphor and simile in this piece. It manages to express the feeling of being hurt - and how powerless you are to stop it.

Overall, A+. Only feedback I have (and I hate giving feedback because I sound mean) is that the beginning is a little bit generalized compare to the rest of the story.

Hi! I'll be reviewing your work today :D
I love the emotion and rawness that your work portrays. Its like, you magiced a harsh reality of life into a beautiful and poignant piece of writing. It gives the vibes of a poem too because of its flow.
"The betrayal cut deeper than the guilt ever did." - this was my favourite line. This is a line with which I'm sure that a lot of people can relate and resonate with.
i have a small suggestion for you, I feel like some lines give a repetitive feel, like for instance the guilt of the person, perhaps it could be changed a bit by giving an explanation for their guilt or so.
Some questions for the writer [you ofc ;) ]:
1.Why was the shameful? Was it a long, forgotten mistake or something bad hat the person did, maybe?
2.Why did the person decide to tell it to their best friend? Maybe they were there for them on a previous occasion perhaps?
3.Why didn't the person share it with their family?
(These were some stuff which could be added to your work to make it even more powerful though it already is splendid).
Overall, i simply loved your work! It resonated with me very well and the layers of heavy emotions were exquisite.

Hey..thanks for the review and I do planned to write everything out but left some points unsaid, so the reader could interpret them in their own way. Everyone sees it differently.

This is an interesting story, and i very much like how you wrote it. It sounds like a poem, with a certain flow, almost lyrical. I also like how you expressed what can happen if secrets get out, and how eventually they will twist into something new. Secrets and rumors are like that game, telephone, where by the time they get to the last person it is almost unrecognizable. Its truly crazy how something you deemed to be small can turn into a shadow looming over your head, like some kind of grizzled predator, all because someone decided to leak the things you told them in confidence. I like this story your diction creates room for the readers to empathize with the message.

Thank you so much for the beautiful review
