Typo Alley~J Part One

I wake up with a start as I feel some object crawling over my skin.

Instinctively, I jump up yelping with pain. A rat! Those little devils!

"Nice way to wake up, isn't it?" RP asks. "They woke me up a while back. I could hear them scurrying around which unsettled my sleep. Of course you are such a heavy sleeper that it would take a marching army to wake you."

I stare at RP. He is such a nuisance. I shove him against the wall without giving my action as second thought. He yelps in pain. I suddenly realize that his wounds from the night before are starting to heal up. I hadn't even given any though to them. How foolish of me.

"Shut up in there!" the guard says, before adding, "And I don't want any more fighting. It is against the rules." He gave us a fierce glare that would scare a bear away. He looks dangerous.

Just as I think he is about to open the door and charge us, I hear the door to the dungeon open. A smaller hobbit, only about three fee high, enters into the light of one of the torches. He is carrying a tray. Oh good, breakfast.

"When do I get relieved?" our guard asked irritably.

"How should I know? I work in the kitchen. I've only been into the guard's quarters once while touring the grounds when I applied for the job."

"Well it better be coming soon," the guard stated. His voice carried itself through the dungeons, visiting each of the cells before bouncing back to ours.

The hobbit, who I presume is a boy, handed us our food as the guard opened the iron to our cell, and then hurriedly walked back toward the exit of the dungeon. I guess I am not the only one who is afraid of that guard.

The cell door slams shut with a loud bang that again reverberates off of the dungeon walls. The guard curses under his breath. I don't catch what exactly he said. I heard something about a fool along with a jumble of other unintelligible phrases.

"He's quite cranky today," RP comments to me in a voice, barely above a whisper.

"I noticed. Perhaps, if he always acts this way, you will have a competitor." He eyes my with furrowed eyebrows.

"I don't plan to stick around long enough to do that?" he says dryly. I smirk, realizing I have scored a victory. RP obviously said that with of bravado.

A few minutes later, after an episode of pacing the guard finally shows up. He looks much more pleasant than our current one, but looks can be deceiving.

"What took you so long?" the guard ask. He glares at the other man angrily.

"I am not late," the man insists. "I always arrive arrive exactly when I intend to. Today, I intended to take longer eating breakfast! I wanted to give a good impression. I never do something I don't mean to."

Our guard gives the man a confused look. "Who are you? I don't recognize you."

"No? I'm surprised. I have only been here a whole night long."

"Ah! A new guard. No wonder they sent you down here. Don't be late again, though."

"But I meant to be late!"

The guard looks thoroughly confused. I feel the same as he does. I look are the new man with incredulity on my face. He stands there with a look of superiority on his face.

"Why would you want to be late. That makes absolutely no sense."

"My point is not to make sense, my point is to be intentional. I meant to be late."

"Your intentions don't matter. What you do matters."

"Hmm. It appears you haven't taken any philosophy classes."

"No... any should I have?" The first guard asks, a quizzical look painted his face. He slowly backs away, edging toward the door leading out of the dungeon.

"You shouldn't I suppose. I should learn to forget my previous life if I want to make any progress in the new one."

"And you should learn never to be late to relieve someone of their post. If something happened while you were gone, you would be held accountable, not to mention the fact that you can be punished as a result. I'll let you off the hook this time, but never again." He gives the new man a stern look before walking away."

"Sure," the guard agrees.

"Good," our previous guard says, leaving the dungeon.

"Well, that went off better than I thought it would," the guard comments softly.

After his comment silence moves into the room and and grabs all of your throats. The only noises comes from one of us moving around. Outside the birds are tweeting and twittering cheerfully as if everything in the world is all right. Is suppose that, to them, it is. I feel gloomy as I eat the porridge the boy brought us. Wold, seeming not to care much for the food, pins down a rat scampering through the cell, breaking the silence.

I smile gratefully at Wold for killing the rat. I hadn't noticed it, but I am sure I would have screamed if I had.

"You aren't going to survive on rats alone, a gruff voice says. At first I think it is RP, but then I realize it is our guard."

"I know, Wold replies. I'm counting on it. I am primarily ate it because I'm bored, and Racen, the elf there, hates rats."

The guard grunts. I can't tell whether he is amused or simply ambivalent. He doesn't give any further indication of emotion to give me a hint, so we return to the silence. I am not sure what is more binding... it or the iron bars on the door of the cell.

"Why are the three of you so quiet?" the guard asks. You look like a flock of sheep with no grass to eat."

"No, we are shepherds without any grass to feed our sheep with," Wold corrects.

"Ah, I see. Well, are you going to answer my question or not?"

"The other guards told us that we weren't allowed to talk"

"Hmm. They probably didn't want to have to listen to you. Or they were trying to sleep on duty.

"Ho did you guess?" I ask.

"I know how people act. I have made it a lifelong hobby of mine."

RP breaks out in a chuckle. I turn to glare at him out of habit before I realize that he isn't talking to me. His mood instantly sours.

"Sorry, I thought you were laughing at my question."

"Typical," his terse reply brings the attention of the guard to him.

"You don't get along?" he queries.

"Unfortunately," Wold replies, "they always try to jab at each other all the time. I've been trying to make them solve their differences, but my effort have made little headway toward reconciliation."

"I see. You are a pacifist."

"Yes. You could call me that. I can't help but wonder why you would be interested?"

"Like I said, I like studying people's behaviors. It is fun."

"I'm glad you find me amusing," Wold quips. "I actually like to hold to my principles. I don't always push for peace. Sometimes it is unavoidable."

"Intriguing! Very few people live by principles. I always enjoy people that are different from the majority. Once you have studied one ordinary person you have studied them all."

"Are you calling me ordinary?" RP growls. "If you are you are complete,y mistaken."

"Tsk tsk. Aren't you touchy. I actually think that you are rather usual. You are much like the stereotypical dwarf. The was I can tell is by whether they claim to be typical or not. They are aways the opposite of what they think."

RP challenges the guard to a staring contest and the guard accepts. Surprisingly the guard doesn't back down right away like most people do when they face off against RP. He shakes his head in disgust, as if to say that the guard isn't a worthy opponent."

An uncomfortable silence follows. My thoughts to to thoughts of lunch interrupt me. I glance outside and see the sun rising up to the zenith of its arc. It must be noon now. I don't know how often they are willing to feed us, though. We will most likely only be ridden two meals a day, so I shouldn't expect any food for a long while.

The guard shuffles around. I look up and see him fumbling through his a large pocket in the pants of his uniform. He pulls out morsel of bread and some cheese. How rude of him! He makes a mm noise in appreciation, only serving to wet my appetite more.

"Nice of you to bring us lunch," RP says. I can almost taste the sarcasm dripping off his tongue. He states my thoughts purposely. It's ironic that I actually agree with an insult that RP issues.

"I thought about it, but I thought that stealing from the kitchen. However intentional I was, wouldn't really sit well with the powers that exist within the kitchen. Have you seen the ladle the cook carries with him! Whooee! That is enough to scare anyone, even the likes of you, dwarf."

"My name is RP417, to you."

"That's nice to know. It is quite an interesting name. Unusual. Perhaps the best thing about you."

"You can call him RP," Wold interjects.

"No he cannot," RP retorts. "He will call my by my full name, not by a nickname." The guard shrugs. He seems far more interested in contemplating RP's name to car about whether on no he is allowed to call him by his nickname or not. He is the strangest guard. I haven't been around very many of them, but this one doesn't seem to be acting the way he should. I suddenly devise a tactful question to pose to him.

"So, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself? If you are so interested in us, perhaps you should tell us a little bit about yourself in return."

"Who's to say I can give you any information about myself? I am your guard, you know. I don't have to tell you anything about myself. Perhaps I am just a guard that is sent here to look stupid and friendly to get information out of you."

"If that's the case, why suggest the idea to us?" RP asks suspiciously.

"I was merely presenting the possibilities. Any or none of them could be true. You will have to wait and find out which one is for yourself. I can't tell you about the mystery, give you all of the clues and tell you what is the truth, can I?"

"No," I assent. "That would take away all of the fun of the game that you are trying to make us play."

The guard raises his eyebrows, but says nothing. RP opens his mouth to speak, but I give him the look. He remains silent. I have a hunch that this guard, whatever his name is, is trying to prove something to us, or show us something in am obvious way. I think hard about the possibilities, and why he wants us to do this, but nothing comes to mind.

I glance out the barred window again and see the sun beginning to fall toward the opposite horizon. It burns fiercely. We are now at the hight of summer. The sun's heat is enough to burn one's skin within a matter of a few hours.

"I will give you until my next shift, whenever that is, to try to figure out the mystery. If you don't have it I won't give you anything."

"Who said there was anything to give?" RP asks.

"I did, of course! I am the one who makes all the rules around here."

Hello r4p17!

What an odd guard! Then again, where better to study behaviour than at a prison, you can do it whilst getting paid. Anyways, quite a few nitpicks:

three fee high, enters
feet?

"I know, Wold replies. I'm counting on it. I am primarily ate it because I'm bored, and Racen, the elf there, hates rats."
I think you need quotation marks to seperate the term 'Wold replies.' from what she actually says.

"Ho did you guess?" I ask.
How?

"If you are you are complete,y mistaken."
completely?

We are now at the hight of summer.
height?

Can't wait for you to publish the next chapter, see you then!

Hi r4p17!

I am back again for the final review I should be giving you today! And guess what? I am all caught up! Finally ^.^

I am not sure how I feel about this chapter. I liked it well enough but the nitpicks I pulled out were numerous and that sort of distracted me from being able to enjoy the novel as much as I wanted to. I think that you did a good job of adding in another challenge here by giving them this weird guard who is speaking in riddles. I feel like he would be the key to getting them out of this jail so I do hope they manage to solve it pretty soon. Especially before anyone else gets tortured. I did want to know why they were being held in captivity as well, but maybe we will be able to find this out in the next chapter. I am looking forward to knowing that.

Okay, I didn't really have much to say on the content of this chapter because basically it was all good - descriptions, dialogue and of course, the plot. So I am just going to work on those nitpicks because I really think that is what needs tidying up in this chapter.

Instinctively, I jump up yelping with pain.

I don't think Racen should be yelping in pain seeing as that isn't the issue here. She is not harmed by the rat but more so creeped out by the fact that it is there. So i would more so say she jumps up yelping in fear.

Of course you are such a heavy sleeper

Comma needed after the second word.

I shove him against the wall without giving my action as second thought. He yelps in pain. I suddenly realize that his wounds from the night before are starting to heal up. I hadn't even given any though to them. How foolish of me.

I don't know why but this came across as stated words and utterly unfeeling. I wanted some more emotions in here. It also got a little repetitious when you mention the fact that she hadn't thought about his injuries before the push. So try and make it seem like she is feeling more empathetic towards him. Here's an example of how I would do it, although this doesn't mean you have to do it like this!

I shove him against the wall without giving my action a second thought. As RP yelps in pain I suddenly realise that his wounds from the previous night are just starting to heal and that must've hurt. I wince as I see him crouch in pain and wonder how much pain he could be in. Even though the regret starts to bleed into me I swallow down my apology, refusing to be kind to him. He's been cruel to me before.

Just as I think he is about to open the door and charge us, I hear the door to the dungeon open.

A close repetition of the word 'open' here, and even then it kind of contradicts each other because she is worried about the door opening, and then it does, so she should be more frightened. So maybe rewrite this in a way that shows the guard isn't near the door when it first opens. For example saying: Just as I think he is about to open the door and charge us, it opens of it's own accord.

A smaller hobbit, only about three fee high

Typo! *feet

"Well it better be coming soon

A comma is needed after the first word.

who I presume is a boy, handed us our food as the guard opened the iron to our cell, and then hurriedly walked back toward the exit of the dungeon.

I feel like the word iron needs to be followed with door just to specify things. Also, you switch to past tense here when I know this whole novel has been written in present tense. So words like 'handed' and 'walked' should be changed.

I don't catch what exactly he said

I pulled this out because it is just an awkward way to word things. It can be said differently so that it flows better. Like 'I don't exactly catch what he said.'

He eyes my with furrowed eyebrows.

Typo! *me

RP obviously said that with of bravado.

There is no need for the word 'of' in this sentence.

"What took you so long?" the guard ask.

I should be 'asks' instead of 'ask.'

Why would you want to be late.

This is the only question I found in this chapter that needed a question mark and didn't have one. It's good that there are fewer of them, but make sure you watch out and try to catch them before posting!

"No... any should I have?

There is no need for the word 'any' in this sentence.

After his comment silence moves into the room and and grabs all of your throats.

I think you meant our instead of your?

"Ho did you guess?" I ask

Typo! *how

If you are you are complete,y mistaken

Typo! *completely

Quickie note: I found that often the speech marks were in the wrong places or were missing. Especially when someone starts to speak and there is a dialogue tag in the middle before they continue to speak. I didn't pull out every occasion because there were simply too many to do so. So make sure when you proofread this chapter next it is something you look out for!

My thoughts to to thoughts of lunch interrupt me.

I think you can see that three of the words need to be cut out of this sentence. I am not sure why they are there.

ridden two means a day.

Do you mean given instead of 'ridden.'

I thought about it, but I thought that stealing from the kitchen.

This sentence feels like there should be more of an explanation coming after the full stop, and like the sentence isn't quite complete. What did he think about stealing from the kitchen?

contemplating RP's name to car about whether on no he is allowed to call him by his nickname or not.

Typos! *care *not. Also, there is no need for the last two words in the sentence because they are simply repeated from earlier in the sentence. The point is already brought across.

That's all I have to say really! I think this was a good chapter when it comes to the key things like plot and descriptions. You really need to proofread before posting though so there are fewer nitpicks and the story is a lot more enjoyable to read in that aspect. As always, let me know whenever you post another chapter!

Hey, R4!

Yeeeess~ That ending though. Now, that's a really awesome way to pull the author right back into the story without anyone else realizing it. Even the ending just sort if hinted at it, but it just makes so much sense. Talking about how he likes to see how people react and getting into their heads (quite literally in the sense that he's writing them ^^) That was really clever on your part and actually super enjoyable.

Now for critique!

One big thing that I notice is something the transition between chapter narration and dialogue is a little bit strange. It's suddenly there and there's no connection back to what just happened, like maybe how the silence was shattered when R4 spoke (after the words) or something to just show a reaction on how Racen could've seen it. She may have even been a little startled because it was all quiet.

I've also got these two quotes pulled out right quick:

He looks dangerous.

*sobs* I see the narration is starting to slip a little bit, with very apparent grammar mistakes (some places not even making much sense and this interrupting the flow) but right here is a right in your face line. There could be so many, much more exiting ways to say this and help get us more into Racen's head to see what makes her think that he looks dangerous. Be careful of spots like this.

He gives the new man a stern look before walking away."

Alright, two things. First unnecessary quotation make (there's your grammar of the day xD). The other thing that made me stop to think here is the guard just walked away. So, why is he still looking back and talking? It doesn't make very much sense to me, so perhaps reword this to something about how the guard seems impatient and wants to leave?

Alright, so Racen kind of disappears for a moment while the guards are talking. She just zones out and listens to then (because she stops narrating completely) and I don't really see point of that conversation. Yes, the guard is late and the other isn't happy about that, but it seems to go on too long in a direction we don't really care about. So tune back into Racen at this point perhaps and give us that balance between dialogue and narration.

Final thing that I noticed while reading this is how Racen repeatedly mentioned time of day and all that, by looking about the window, but it doesn't seem consistent. At one point it's noon and then five minutes later the sun is sinking in the sky, implying late afternoon or early evening. So watch out for that (and why would Racen keep looking out over and over? Once and she already has the time for a couple hours.)

Another interesting part and I'm interested to see what will happen with the Author now. Unless he'll just be a jerk and kind of leave them locked up there with no help whatsoever. Kind of sound like him. I'm excited for more!

Keep on Writing,
~Wolfare~

Hi, my name is Cryaoticfangirl1367. I am your reviewer in this story. I am not good at reviewing so I hope this is review is good.

Okay, you started very good at the beginning. It gave the readers interested into reading on and wanted to see what's happening. I wandered why RP is in jail. Did he break the law or something? Will you answer these question in the next part? :)

I see some errors in this story. Like on this one:

"I know, Wold replies. I'm counting on it. I am primarily ate it because I'm bored, and Racen, the elf there, hates rats."

You need a quotation marks after the comma and after the period.

"Are you calling me ordinary?" RP growls. "If you are you are complete,y mistaken."

You misspelled "completely".

"No he can[i]not[i],"

You made the word, cannot, weird by that italicize. Maybe italicize 'cannot' to make it more sense.

Overall, it's interesting. I learned this is a interesting chapter. I know this is not a beginning of the story. So I might read the VERY first chapter. You need a some few twerk on the the chapter. Okay, see ya.

Its a nice start. However I am left with a lot of questions. Why is our protagonist in what i assume to be a prison? Whats the plot? Whats our protagonist name? All I could see was RP and another guy called Wold but what about our hero? I saw the word Cannot with not italicized. It would be best to review your story and fix the minor grammar error. I'm really curious as to where you are going with this story. I see its an adventure and fantasy type of story so you caught my interest.

Umm, this is ten chapters into the story, hence it is not a start. So in answer to all your questions, go read the previous chapters.

oh, sorry still new here
