The Great White Whale

I've heard tell of a marvelous tale,
A great long tale of a great white whale.
And through the tale they chase the whale,
Chasing something that can never be caught.

Now keep in mind I've never read this book,
But I think if we take a closer look
At the chase of the beast the men undertook
We might find it quite similar to life.

The men must realize their search is in vain
But still they search just the same
Their faith may have wobbled, but their course never changed,
They chased that whale with all their hearts.

Does that not remind us a bit of ourselves?
When we insanely tear the books from the shelves
In search of the thing that will fill the empty wells,
The empty wells of our souls?

They chase the whale as we chase life
Through the mischief and mistakes, joy and strife,
The woman drags her man and the man drags his wife
To the end of the line, because we won't ever catch The White Whale of Life.

Thank you. Thank you for reminding me how life is through words woven artfully into a rhythmic poem that kept me interested instead of leading me to an incomplete and unsatisfied ending and conclusion. This was a very well written and composed summary of just how life truly is and reminded me of myself more than I would care to admit. I would be thrilled for you to continue to do and make things like this, so keep writing and inspiring! Good luck and good fortune!

I am certainly biased on this particular work as I love any and all things with slants and discordant rhyme xD I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and now it's stuck in my head, but as a nursery rhyme might be (It's just that catchy!)

I think people don't often appreciate how hard it can be to write poetry like this, of course the rhyming itself can be tedious at times, but the effort it takes to make the last line (or whatever other line a particular poem might use) not rhyme, but keep the rhythm going. I will admit only that "They chased that whale with all their hearts" was a bit of a stretch with that rhythm, but my personal opinion is that the message you so cleverly worked into the piece more than made up for it.

Speaking of the message, simile-like poems have always held a special place in my heart :) To connect something such as Moby Dick to the never-ending struggle that is life is really an idea worth commending.

I'll have you know that the last stanza is really now one of my favorite of all time, and I hope you'll let me quote you and point people in the direction of your poem in future :D Keep up the fantastic writing, and I hope that at least some of this was mildly helpful :) Cheers!

Hello, InfiniteRectangles here with a review for you!

First, I really like your writing style. This was very well written and I like the comparison of the whale to life. That was a very nice touch that I liked very much (hey! I rhymed! XD) Anyway, that being said, I did find a couple of issues, so let the nit-picking commence.

"A great long tale of a great white whale.
And through the tale they chase the whale,"

These two lines felt rather simple and plain to me. I understand what you were going for, and I like the internal rhyme, but I think you could use this as an opportunity to show some imagery. That is just a suggestion though.

"Their faith may have wobbled, but their course never changed,"

This line seemed a bit long. It seemed like it should have been split into two lines instead of staying as one.

That's really all I have for you. This was a great poem and I just love your writing style! I am looking forward to reading more of your work. Keep writing and have a wonderful review day!

Hey there herbgirl. It's just lizzy stopping by for a quick review of your wonderful poem. I really liked it but I will save the rest of my praise for the end. So without further ado let the reviewing begin.

There is not much in the way of grammar and spelling so my review is going to focus around the content.
I do have one little, teensy problem with the flow in the second set. You have a comma after book but I think for the right flow at least one more comma is necessary. I know for sure that one should go after undertook, at least in my opinion.

The title of your poem is what attracted me. At first I thought this was going to be a poem about Moby Dick or something similar to that, but boy was I wrong. The very vivid descriptions also told me I had to read on.

The comparison to life is very intriguing, mostly because it is an accurate description of life.
If the poem was broken apart the first few lines could stand on their own and been just as thrilling. I usually do not appreciate near repition but I can see why it was necessary in this case.

Well I guess that's about it. I think I said before this was just going to be a quick review.
Happy Review Day!

Hello herbgirl! CHRISSY321 here to drop by with a quick little review! :smt024

*Happy Holidays! :smt111 *

Okay, so I went into the green room, and saw this, and the title was so intriguing! It made me wonder what kind of take you were going to take with the topic being the White Whale, so I checked it out. You blew me out of the water with what you did. At first a part of me thought you would just be saying there was a tale about a whale, and just describing it, but you went way beyond that, and I think it is amazing! There is very little, if not nothing that I saw to fix, but I just wanted to drop some suggestions your way, to see if you would like them :)

When we insanely tear the books from the shelves
In search of the thing that will fill the empty wells,
The empty wells of our souls?

Here was really, really good! If there was something I would change though, it would be to instead not have to comma after 'wells' but instead maybe use a (-) (dash). I think it might flow a little better, but then again that is my opinion, so you could ignore this if you want. ;)

Honestly I just loved this so much and I really can not find anything else in here to fix, nor correct! That is amazing! Bravo! Thanks so much for sharing! I look forward to your future works! ;)

Keep writing!!!
~Chrissy
