Juno
Finally, after an excruciating lunch and two more classes, school is blessedly over. Emma helps me pack my bag with my history and British Lit books. Goodness gracious, who really gives homework on the first day of school? But before I have time to ponder the imminent demise of my perfect GPA, Ben James’ voice drifts over the hallway din.
“Hey, Juno,” Ben calls. What I remember of Asteria’s face floats before me in my mind’s eye, saying, “He’s mine, Juno.” I decide to ignore him, but Emma has another plan in mind.
“Hey, Ben!” Emma babbles as she shoves something extra into my backpack. Probably my pencil pouch from the sound, but I can’t tell with all this noise. This is when I hate being blind the most. Freshman girls are talking too loudly to my right...or are they to my left? And who is that yelling about Friday’s Lock-In? Mrs. Leicester? Or Mrs. Perchnap, the secretary? I can’t tell, damn it, there’s too much noise. So I use that as my excuse for not talking to Ben.
“What’d you say, Emma?” I ask who I think is Emma a little to my left.
"I'm not Emma," says a snobbish voice. Whoops, it’s a freshman girl. Damn.
“Over here, dear,” says Emma, gently pointing me to the right. I feel the heat of another body–Ben. Great.
“Hey, mind if I help you guys out?” Ben asks, taking a bag, I assume. Maybe I was wrong earlier... No, what am I thinking? I’ve never liked Ben, ever since the sixth grade when he killed the class pet and blamed me. Asteria has described what he looks like to me before, but I don’t remember much. Just nice eyes and a good jawline. I guess puberty was good to him, because I also remember she’d described him with acne and a huge nose. I try to focus on what’s happening.
“Come on, Juno,” says Emma, taking my arm. Ben starts clearing the hallway.
“GET OUT OF THE WAY, FRESH MEAT,” Ben bellows down the hall. “CAN’T YOU SEE I AM TRYING TO ESCORT THESE LADIES TO THEIR CARS? GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!”
Emma and I start laughing so hard, I have to sit down when we get outside because laughing too hard while I’m standing disorients me.
“I can’t believe you just,” I gasp, wiping my eyes. I can’t even finish my sentence. Goodness me, I sound like a Tumblr post. I lift my face to the sunlight and let out the last of my laughter.
“Are you done?” asks Ben, sitting beside me. Too close. I scoot over a bit and then stand up, remembering myself.
“Uh, yeah,” I say, trying to regain my I-Don’t-Like-You mindset, but finding it more difficult than usual. Emma and Ben start talking about the Lock-In so I can lose myself for a second.
Think of all the mean stuff you’ve seen Ben do over the years, I think to myself. I think back...
A blind twelve-year-old feels for the water fountain. Ben is already there, holding down the button without the girl's knowledge, spraying her as soon as she bends down.
C’mon, Juno, it was sixth grade, myself answers. Get over it. But the memories come again.
A sighted six year old wants to nap next to Asteria, but Ben is already there, replacing her. A sighted six year old has no snack, because Ben stole it. A sighted seven year old loses her backpack and finds it in the trash, graffitied and torn apart by Ben and his cronies. A freshly blind eight year old stumbles up the stairs, only to be tripped at the top by–who else?–Ben.
This is Asteria’s territory, I argue. I can’t.
Fine, myself sighs.
Maybe I’m not blind. Maybe I’m just clinically insane. Hearing my name breaks me from my thoughts. No, hearing Ben say my name breaks me from my thoughts. Damn you, heart, stop running so fast.
“What’s that?” I ask, feeling Emma’s hand on my shoulder, pulling me up between them, so we’re walking three-across.
“I was asking if you were coming Friday,” Ben says, “to the, uhm...the Lock-In?” He helps me over a curb to Frey’s car, where I hear Frey blasting–what else?–The Fray.
“Uhhm,” I say.
“She’s coming,” Emma says. I can hear the smile in her words. I can feel it echo in my brain, reverberating against that little door behind which I keep all my personal feelings. That smile knocks on the door. Praise God, no one answers.
“Cool,” says Ben, like something metaphorically resonant did not just happen inside my head.
“See you Friday,” I manage to get out before Ben walks away, his shoes hitting the pavement, perfectly, beautifully offbeat. As soon as he’s out of squeak-shot, Emma starts squealing loud enough to be heard over Never Say Never. Frey turns the radio down.
“What’s interrupting my Fray time?” he asks. Or did he ask, “What’s interrupting my Frey time”? The world may never know.
“Ben just totally asked Juno out!” Emma screams.
“What!?” says another voice behind me. I turn slowly, facing the sound. Her anger radiates like a nuclear bomb freshly detonated. I’m glad I can’t see her face, because I’m sure it’s monstrous.
“Asteria, calm down,” Frey says, putting a hand on my shoulder from behind me. “Juno didn’t do anything.”
“And Ben didn’t really ask Juno out,” Emma explains nervously. I can feel her fidgeting beside me. “I just...I just exaggerated!”
“What,” Asteria growls, “exactly did he say?”
“He asked me if I would be at the Lock-In on Friday,” I say, my voice surprisingly calm in the face of doom. “And I said I would be because I will be.”
“I–” Asteria stops. She tries again. “I just–” Third time’s the charm. “I can’t!” Asteria screams at last. I hear her stamping her foot and slamming the car door shut. Frey rubs my shoulder, probably thinking it’ll calm me down, but I’m not upset. Sisterly fights occur on the daily, and this day is no exception.
“What happened?” Arinna’s voice asks me from my bottom right. Asteria always picks her up from the Meltdown Elementary. I'm just glad Asteria's half-drunkenness didn't affect her ability to remember our little sister. Phew.
Breathe, Juno, I think. Everything's fine.
“Nothing, hun,” I say, feeling for her head. I pat it lightly. “C’mon, let’s go.”

You talk about how Juno is confused by the noise at her school. But I thought that blind people's hearing and other senses become much sharper and stronger. So I would think that it wouldn't be that difficult for Juno during school. Just a thought.
"Maybe I was wrong earlier... No, what am I thinking?"
*"no" wouldn't be capitalized
"“I can’t believe you just,” I gasp, wiping my eyes."
*maybe you could include a hyphen or an ellipses to show that Juno trails off from her sentence
Another great chapter! I like how you throw in the tension between Asteria and Juno, even though Juno doesn't (or does she???) like Ben.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

WHERE IS CHAPTER ELEVEN? :C TELL ME. (I think you might have accidentally typed 12 instead of 11...
I love the tension building up here! I can almost see someone getting smacked and a catfight breaking out...
Is Ben going to fall in love with Juno? Or will he fall in love with the drunk? O.o I am scaredddddd. I cannot wait to read the next chapter, so I will not wait. Bai, I'm going to go read it now... lol
Hey there! So I like everything about this chapter. Really really great! The title of this chapter is awesome and it perfectly fits the situation. Your characters have such strong and visible personalities and I love your writing style.
Beautiful right there!
Review Time:
Once again, I would caution how quickly Juno is falling for Ben. If he did such mean things, I don't think she could so easily forget those and fall for him. Make Ben work for it!
Other than that, great great great!
Keep it up!
Hey There!
I feel bad for Asteria. I thought we would've gotten a bit more drama from her, seeing as she is the drama queen of them all. She did slightly see it a bit when Ben was talking to her, so the mention of Ben asking Juno out should be more of a stab deeper into the heart where a stab already is. I wonder if Asteria will blame Juno, or Ben, or both of them!
Thank you for reminding me each time you post a chapter. Very much appreciated. There is less and less for me to say though, because the style is always improving and the characters are always moving forwards. I like listening to some of The Fray's music (Never Say Never is great <3) And I thought the word play you had going on there was awesome. Of course Frey would like them! He had every reason to.
Juno isn't sad? But she sort of likes Ben herself, by the looks of the way she is acting. I thought she might be a little bit sad because she is arguing with her sister, and they all sound like a fairly close family. I hope it gets sorted out soon. But more importantly play up the emotions here a bit, because I'm sure Juno feels something, and might just be sad to see a connection between sisters being severed a bit.
Ah, this is a pet peeve of mine. I think I have also mentioned it in previous reviews. Just remember to put a space after the three full stops because otherwise you are connecting the two words together via the punctuation. And that isn't good, because it isn't what we want to see.
It seemed a bit repetitive with the laughing so hard, and laughing too hard there as well. I think maybe the end of the sentence should just be: I have to sit down when we get outside because laughing while standing disorients me.
Ooh, so far you've only given us one example. But I want moreeee. It would be nice to see what chemistry, albeit good or bad, Ben and Juno had when they were younger. That means he must remember when she wasn't blind right? It would be nice to think back and have a moment where Juno is remembering what his face looked like then, and trying to picture what has become of it today. It would be interesting.
Keep me updated, and keep up the good writing as well ^.^

Alrighty! Thank you so much!
I fixed the punctuation bit, I explained a bit why Juno isn't sad (it's because she fights with Asteria a lot more often than you think, and don't worry, they make up soon!) and I added a few more memories of Ben from when Juno could see.
Thank you for your review and your dedication to my story! Guys, you don't understand how much it means to me. <3
Hi there!
Gah, you're killing me here! Juno needs to like Ben already. Why does she have to be so confused? They need to be together!
Okay, now that I've got my fangirling out of the way, let me focus on your actual chapter.
So there are a few spots that I found lacked explanation. Especially since Juno is blind. And since this is all written in 1st person as well.
So the only way that Juno would know this is if Emma told her or the girl told her. You can have the girl be like, "I'm not Emma. My name's Crystal" or something like that. Just so Juno will know that it's not Emma. Otherwise I find it hard to believe that she knows who's there.
Again, she wouldn't really know that he's clearing the hallway
Since this is written in 1st person, Juno wouldn't know for sure that Asteria was thinking. That's the kind of thing you run into when you write in 1st person. You try so hard not to get into other characters's actions and thoughts, but you slip up every so often.
So overall I really like this chapter. I like the way you showed Juno's feelings toward Ben. It's all very interesting and no doubt I'll be super excited to see where their relationship goes. You know, if it ever gets going.
The main thing I'd say about this is that there are times when you don't explain how Juno knows certain things (basically the things I mentioned above). Just keep in mind that she's blind. I mean, duh, of course you know that she's blind. But we don't know how she reacts to certain sounds and feelings. You get what I'm saying? That's why I'm saying explain things a bit. Then we'll get a better understanding of how she knows what's going on around her.
Along those same lines, I was impressed with the "too much noise" thing. I never thought of that before, I don't know why. Of course she'd get overwhelmed by all of the sounds. She wouldn't be able to focus on just Ben's voice, or Emma's. I'm glad you put that in there. It adds another dimension of reality.
That's all I got for you in this review. I'm still looking forward to seeing some Ben & Juno action
Keep writing!
**Noelle**
Ah! Thank you!
I did change all the things you suggested specifically, but I'm not great at editing in things that are more abstract. All I can do is promise I'll work on explanations in the coming chapters. I usually leave out explanations, because Juno wouldn't feel the need to explain. She's the kind of person who just says things and expects people to keep up. But I will keep your suggestion in mind, especially since I think you're right in that it'll help readers understand a little better.
Thank you so much for your review!
You guys are so fabulous <3
Hey! IamTraunt here to review your beautiful peice of work!
I've seriously wanted this to happen so bad! And I know I'm not the only one. Some stories are the type where you could ship any of the characters together, but this is one of those ones where you just HAVE to put these together. It would be a crime against nature to not allow that spark to begin. It would be heart-wrenching! I'm so glad you made that descision, and we all knew it was going to happen at some point. You always hinted to us about this little 'romance'.
Nitpick!
Spoiler
'Jawline' shouldn't be all one word. English is a funny language, right? I would have thought it was all one word, but it's not.
I like how you show the reader sisterly relationships in this chapter. Firstly, you presnt Aestria as a 'life-saver', especially in Frey's eyes, as she helps him get out of trouble numerous times and helps him conceal his inner 'gayness'. You show Aestria in a new light in this chapter as you show us how presassuring and controlling siblings can be. Juno obviously knows how at the snap of Aestria's fingers, she could be the talk of the school. I mean, I'd be pretty scared if I got on the wrong side of her as she's popular - she could gossip about Juno and it would be spread like wildfire. And that's why Aestria is 'floating around' in Juno's mind, as she knows the consequences of her actions.
Nitpick!

I love your wording you use in your novel - but this is not accurate. When someone is speaking, you can't 'bubble' words. You can be bubbly, but not 'bubble' something. I can see what your saying though. Shame it isn't quite right.
I like how you get to learn more about Emma in this chapter, though I do miss you talking about Juno's monkey. Maybe I can hear from him later in the story? Anyway, you get to see hom cheerful and jolly she is, and how cheeky (in a nice sense) she is as she obviously knows Juno upside down and back-to-front, and she will know that Juno isn't that interested in Ben... or not yet *rubs hands together gleefully*. THANK YOU EMMA! I'm sure Deanie and Noelle are going to be happy over this new development! <3
Spoiler
Woah! Where did Arinna come from? Does she go to Meltdown too? I thought she was only really young... hm. Sorry, my brains not working. Have I just misunderstood?
Nitpick!
Spoiler
'I can't' what? She can't believe it? I'm a little confused here. If Aestria is saying 'I can't believe it', but can't finish her sentence, I would put: 'I can't-!'
Reminds me of Frozen *hee hee*.
I love how you add humour into this chapter, especially when Ben is guiding Juno to her car *so sweet!*, it really adds to the realism here - as we know what teens are like (being them, well, duh!). I was laughing when Ben was shouting, I found that extremely humorous! Though I can see why you put it in capitols for when Ben is shouting, you don't really need to have them in there as the reader can already imagine him doing so by the verb 'bellows'.
Well done, Your Highness! I look forward to the next... and the next... and the next! *Bows*
P.S. Happy Eleventh Chapter! I've been reading since the beginning so I thought I'd just say that ^^ I'm strange. I know.
Thank you, Traunt!
The nitpicks are especially helpful, because my knowledge of the mechanics of the English language is very shallow.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your dedication to this story. Seriously, it's what keeps me going.
You'll see more of Reginald in the coming chapters. There's a development I have in mind for Emma that will require his presence at school...*holds hand over mouth* I said nothing!
Thank you thank you thank you!
Oh no. Oh no. That does not sound good! But it sounds so amazing at same time! O.o Emma!
Can't wait! And welcome! <3
