Warm smiles

that are ice underneath

hands in mine

taking a hold on my heart

Digging in with sharpened nails

ripping at my every seam

but I let you in

I let you destroy me

I made the mistake of trusting you

I could see through those fake pearly whites

that too-cute chortle

that you’ve probably rehearsed a million times

I brushed it under the rug

Just like you knew

exactly what to say

at just the right time

to charm me

That’s the thing with charmers

It’s all magic and bliss

then it turns black and blue

at the drop of hat

Your stupid bottomless hat

of sweet as pie lines

that must have been reused

and recycled a thousand times over

I said I love you

You said I love you more

I said I love you most

I guess it was true

Your hands against my skin

once electric

Now if they grazed me

I would turn stone-cold

Just like your heart

Just like your soul

The way you played me

The way I fell for it

First glances on fire

You knew just the right words

You knew what would make me

weak at the knees

You got inside my head

You fucked with my emotions

Red flag number one

You seemed like a natural

You acted humble

You acted wise

You acted cute

You acted innocent enough

If only your line-up of girls knew

Red flag number two

You were always late

I wasn't important enough

to be your first priority

I was probably your last

and you have a long list,

don’t you?

Red flag number three

You didn’t introduce me to your friends

There were probably too many girls

to bring around

Too much of a risk for slip-ups

To be found out

Red flag number four

You blew me off

and what kills me the most

is that let it happen

I let you think you could have me

whenever you wanted me

I kept falling at your mercy

I let you have your way

I let you use me

Red flag number five

The excuses were endless

You were dealing with family

teetering along the edge of

probably bullshit

but possibly the truth

then the excuses pile up

and start to unravel

You were never in reach

You didn’t have service

You were sorry

You were so sorry every time

but you never changed

and you never will

Guys like you don’t change.

What confuses me?

You let me in.

It could have all been lies

maybe the entire thing

from A to Z

was all one big lie

I’ll never know

Do you really have ADD?

Is your mom really an alcoholic?

Do you have it that hard?

Or were you just trying to act like

you wanted me to know you

just to get inside my head

to see my weaknesses?

You introduced me to your grandma

not your mom

not dinner at your house

and she tried to warn me

“Anything I haven’t fixed with him- it’s your job.”

It’s not my job, if you don’t care

If you don’t care about

leaving me high and dry

leaving me wondering

And I loved you so good

I treated you like a king

Boy, I wish I hadn’t

Of course if I had only known

You didn’t deserve my kisses

You didn’t deserve my body

You didn’t deserve to lay a single finger on me

You deserve a broken heart

but if it’s not there to begin with

no one can break it

You held me so close to your heart

or so I thought

You fed me smooth lines

and your seemingly loving ways

Your little quirks

the way you must get every girl you cross paths with.

So thank you for wasting my time

for playing with my head

for ripping my heart out my chest

and throwing it over your shoulder

But I am just as much to blame

For letting you play me

For letting you in

For not seeing you

For what you truly are.

No one could ever love you

because you won’t let them

You want the control

You wanted me begging at your knees

You expected me to adore you

when you were never there for me

and you can never love anyone

because you’ll break them with your games

But my broken parts

will heal stronger where you shattered me

because I will never let you in again

I will never let you play me

You never get to touch me again

You never get to look at me with those lying,

good-for-nothing-but-trouble eyes

You will never get the love I gave you

ever again.

You don’t deserve me

You deserve to burn

and I can already see the flames

flicker at your feet

the smoke rising up

taking you away

disappearing in its heart

forever gone.

Hey Klennon14, you reviewed one of my poems yesterday so I thought I'd return the favor and wow! I feel like our poetic themes are so similar! I read through three or four of your pieces and all of them I could totally relate to at least in some aspect. The bitter heart-break, anger, resolution, and wisdom in hindsight is really prevalent especially in this one.

The last stanza was actually one of my favorites, the confidence there takes a long time coming, but in the end *boom* you just say it like it is.

Now I thought you had plenty of good lines in here throughout, but for me it got a bit long in places? Like I think you could almost skip the red flags or cover those more succinctly. And then the second half of the poem it felt like there was just a ton of repetition from the first half. This isn't bad - because again, it's good content, but having so many stanzas allows some of the really strong parts to fade in the background.

Another suggestion is you have moments of really fabulous metaphors and allusions - like the fire in the end, and the rug, and then a lot of those "it's too good to be true" lines -- but I think you could highlight this a bit more. Bring the fire from the last stanza into the rest of the piece maybe. (You could even try to connect it to the eletricity you mention or the "warm" smile).

These two stanzas below I also loved:

Your stupid bottomless hat
of sweet as pie lines
that must have been reused
and recycled a thousand times over

I said I love you
You said I love you more
I said I love you most
I guess it was true

I really enjoy how you turn the phrases here to make them really harsh, and you linger for moments in sadness in the piece but you allow the bits of anger and maybe humor? to come through too. That second stanza with the "I love you bit" is just so simple yet powerful too, really speaking lengths to how after or leading up to break-ups people turn over those phrases and conversations over and over again in their heads trying to decipher what was real.

I think that element of it all being fake is a strong theme in the piece. It's one thing to write a break-up poem where it's like "I'm sad, I'm hurt, that boy's a loser" etc. it's another thing to try to analyze and bring some insight into "what went wrong" and why it's painful, why it hurts, and who that other person was -- and I think the lying bit really gets into that analytical side that makes poems like this really interesting and even insightful.

I think it might be worth taking a second look at some of the capitalization & punctuation choices because some of them seemed inconsistent, but overall I wasn't overly distracted or concerned with that and felt the poem flowed pretty well.

Nice work here! I look forward to reading more of your poems in the future! :)

Hi, J here for a review.
Well I'm glad you got some things off your chest. Even if you have never been through a break up this poem is understandable and filled with relatable emotion for anyone. I'm glad your pace stayed consistant throughout the entire piece, with most long poems the author will make things way to fast in the first part the middle part will be dull and slow then the ending is like a totally different poem.
Over all no grammar mistakes that I can see and you seem to know what you are doing when it comes to writing these types of poems.

Good Job and Keep Writing!!

Thank you!

Hello, I'm Rose. I stumbled upon this piece. And let me tell you this reminded me of my ex-girlfriend, who broke up with me four months ago. Like this was all too real for me haha. But no I felt every emotion with this. And I love the pacing of the poem. This is so relatable, even if someone had never been broken up with, they could probably somehow feel something for the author. This was incredible.

Just a personal note, but I am glad you sre healing. I am so glad you decided to write this out rather than bottling it up. (I tend to bottle up my emotions so like, yeah I know that is a negative thing to do). But anyway, okay, you are going to find peace. You are going to be alright, it will take time and patience, but I think you can do it. But anyway, I hope that made sense. And if you ever need somebody to talk to about this, please do not hesitate in messaging me. I may be a tad bit late with my replies but I will be here.

Thank you so much! For the review and especially for your kind words and encouragement. I tend to bottle things up as well so I can definitely relate. I'm glad my poem resonated with you, and I'm glad you are no longer in an unhealthy relationship. Everyone deserves to find happiness and peace and someone who truly appreciates them.

Thank you, friend. I wish you the best as well.

Wow.

Just wow.

This is a great poem. A truly, honestly magnificent piece of poetry.

It conveys all the emotions beautifully, and accurately portrays what it's like to be in a dysfunctional relationship. (By the way, I'm gonna fight that loser and bury his bones in the woods.)

I love the vocabulary used and the range of emotions, ranging from anger to sorrow to regret to the beautiful last verse.

You totally deserve better!

Hahaha. Oh my goodness, this review just made my day, thank you! I really appreciate it.
