In Old, Old, Old

xD This is an extract from my novel, Mr. Wonderful. Enjoy the fluff. I know you're probably going to be confused by it, but know that Mr. Wonderful/Jarred and Lissie have been friends for a long time. they're secretly together, because her parents would have a fit. xD

I could feel my heart in my chest, rising higher as I watched the smoke billow from the windows. How could this have happened? I asked myself, watching the firemen run into the house after breaking down her door. She was all alone in that house, no one there to help her... The dogs bounded out of the house and ran towards me, whimpering. A paramedic raced over, checking both of them. “They’re fine.” She said to me, clipping leashes on their collars. I tried to smile, but I couldn’t. My heart was going a million miles per hour, it wouldn’t stop, it wouldn’t slow down. I felt for sure I would faint even I didn’t see her little face soon, with its big cheeked dimples. Firemen were now spilling out of the house, one of them carrying her in his arms. I ran forward, tears streaming down my face. “Is she okay?” I screamed, reaching the fireman. He didn’t say anything. I wanted to punch him. Looking down, I realized how frail she really was. Life was frail. The fireman was carrying her away, and I balled my fists. She wasn’t allowed out of my sight, I had to watch her. She might leave me if I didn’t. I stopped the fireman and took her out of his arms. “I’ll carry her.” I said hoarsely. He looked surprised, but then shrugged. She stirred, and buried her face in my shirt. “Jarred?” She asked, her voice scratchy.

“Yes baby?”

“Why do I feel so hot?” Every word seemed to be causing her pain. Her throat was probably on fire.

“Don’t talk right now, darling. Just sleep.”

“Okay.” She whispered, snuggling against my chest. We reached the ambulance, and the paramedic started examining her. “Does she have any medical complications?” she asked, as she probed Lissie’s face.

“Asthma.”

The paramedic frowned. “That’s not good. How severe is it?”

“It depends. It flares up every now and again. Especially in the spring and fall.”

The paramedic nodded. “She just needs sleep I think. When are her parents going to be home?”

“Tomorrow night.”

“Is there an extra bed at your house?”

“Well. Yeah, I guess.” I said, thinking that I could sleep on the couch.

“Would your parents mind?”

“Nah. They  wouldn’t.”

“Let’s go talk to them then.” I led the paramedic across the road, away from her burned house, away from so many lost possessions. After the paramedic checked with my parents, I carried her in, holding her a little closer. Her eyelids fluttered open, and she looked around. “I need water, Jarred.”

“Just a second, Lissie.” I whispered, smiling. My parents had went back to bed, telling me to take care of Lissie. No problems there. I carried her into my room, and lay her down on my bed, wrapping the blankets around her. She moaned a little. She had obviously been burned. “Hi Baby.” I said when her eyes flickered open again.

“Hi Jarred.” Her fingers wrapped around mine, gripping them tightly. “Where am I?”

“My room.”

“Oh.” Her face reddened under the soot.

“You know,” I said, leaning forward and putting my lips against her ear, “when I imagined you in my bed, it never was like this.”

Her face broke into a grin, and she laughed hoarsely. I bent down and kissed her lightly, and then pulled away. “It’s time to sleep, Lissie.”

“Don’t leave.” Her fingers gripped mine even tighter.

“Never.” I whispered, kissing her finger tips and rubbing her knuckles. “I’ll never leave.”

This was a really sweet scene! I love how dedicated he is to her. Just a few things I noticed, grammar-wise:
-"'They’re fine.' She said to me" should read "'They're fine," she said to me". Unless the dialogue is followed by an action, use a comma instead of a period, and don't capitalize "he" or "she." You do that in several other places in the story. It's okay in lines like this one, though: "'Oh.' Her face reddened under the soot."
-"My parents had went back to bed..." I would suggest changing the "went" to "gone."

I thought this was really, really good. Even though it's an excerpt, the scene is very clear. I could tell what was going on without any confusion. which was great, and I don't see that often in novel excerpts. Please keep writing, and post the rest!
