Self- Love

The girl in the mirror isn't good enough

So don't try to convince me that

I am beautiful the way I am

I know deep in my heart that

No one will ever love me

So don't fool me by saying:

I don't need to earn the love of others

Because I already know

My failures and flaws define me

And I don't think it's true that

Life is worth living

(Now read from bottom to top)

I love this style of poetry. Writing about both ideas, top to bottom, and bottom to top, really portrays the difficulty we, as humans, struggle with from day to day. Some days we do feel positive about ourselves, other days, we feel the opposite. You do a great job making those ideas stand out. This takes skill.

Hey there! I know just how hard these reverse poems are, I've tried to write them before and they always turn out... a little chaotic. Your's flows quite well though!

I just have a few comments here and there for it~

punctuation -
I think you made the right choice in being light on the punctuation, because you don't want it to be distracting when the poem is read in reverse, and it reads just fine with the minimal punctuation anyways. You might play around a bit with capitalization, but as-is at least is consistent and I didn't find it distracting at all to reading.

imagery -
I think one way to take this poem to the next level would be to use some imagery in it! Especially with a poem about mirrors, I think this would really help the reader envision the mood of what's going on.

meaning -
I interpreted the poem to be about how someone looks in the mirror and feels really self-conscious but people who look at them, like the subject in the mirror or maybe a re-envisioned self don't see the things that they're self-conscious about and instead love the self. It's a very neat concept!

originality -
I'd love to see you tackle a poem like this with another subject matter, I feel like it's quite typical for reverse poems to cover self- love or self-doubt, and there is something very valid and perhaps therapeutic in writing and reading these, but the subject is quite used in this format. In fact when I google "reverse poems" there are a few that use very similar themes to this one - I'm not sure if maybe you were inspired by a few on the internet, but it does seem like this form of poetry really gravitates to the same subject matter. If you go with a reverse poem again I'd love to see what you could do with a different subject too. :)

Overall -
I really enjoyed reading this, and look forward to reading more of your work!

Hey! Vanilla here! I absolutely adored your poem. I love these types of poems, the ones with a double meaning, a hidden secret. In this one, it has the whole read from bottom to top, top to bottom thing going on and I really liked that. Onwards, to the review!

Personally, I think it could be better if you've added a couple marks here and there but I loved it nonetheless! It's a poem about self-love, the title itself drew me to read your masterpiece!
I'll quote the poem with a couple changes added to it if you don't mind! <3

The girl in the mirror isn't good enough.

So don't try to convince me that;

I am beautiful the way I am.

I know deep in my heart that,

No one will ever love me

From top to bottom: This being the negative part, or point of view of the character says a lot about modern society in my opinion. I think that we focus so much about the negative parts of people, the bad parts, that we forget to see or notice the good parts about them which makes them unique and beautiful the way they are. We don't get to see them unless someone points it out to us. in this case, the last sentence that's inside the parenthesis. . And I think that you showed it so beautifully and really simple for people to understand.

From bottom to top: This is where it felt right and just for me. The character shows how they care for themselves, how they love their own selves and don't care about whatever other people says about them. it shows that the person knows their self-worth and that appearance isn't everything and I really loved that!

So don't fool me by saying:

I don't need to earn the love of others.

Because I already know,

My failures and flaws define me.

And I don't think it's true that,

Life is worth living.

IDK why but I really love how you wrote the poem, truly! Honestly, I think the poem speaks for itself when the title is Self-Love I think that there are two sides of the same coin. That it's either you choose to be negative or positive and you can change whenever you'd like however you'd like. It may take time to have a positive image of yourself and love yourself but I think that once you achieve self-love, you can't be thrown down easily as much as before. I love your poem! I'd love to read more from you!

Love lots! ~<33

I bet you've heard this a whole lot, but this poem is absolutely genius! I don't have a review, but I'm really impressed by your two-faced poem. Definitely something I have never seen before. Personally, I think this is what all poetry should be like.

hello stygianmoon17! Nicole here with a short review.

this is an amazing poem! I think it's a great topic too! it's a very inspirational poem.
I think this is a message that many need to hear, and I think you put it perfectly.

it's amazing the way you wrote it from top to bottom a very sad poem, but from bottom to top a very happy poem. that is so genius!

I really loved this poem!

hope this review helps.

keep writing!

Hey! Forever here with a review!

So first of all with the punctuations. This article has some good tips about how to work with the punctuations of the poem. You didn't give a full stop where a line ends and commas are also sometimes required. Punctuations have a great impact on the poem, it can emphasize things, make the flow better. A lot of things actually. Except that, I think it was quite a good poem.

I really love how you incorporated two totally opposite mindsets in a single poem. When I read it from top to bottom, it felt like a self-sabotaging poem where the narrator is continously lowering their value. They seem to be a very depressed person who doesn't want to live their life. They kind of seem to be social and want others to give them importance.

Now onto the second one, that is, from bottom to top. This poem goes with the title, self-love. It's totally the opposite of the first poem where the narrator wants to be themself and doesn't care what others think of them. The fact that they are enough seems to be the highest testimony of self love. It was a great poem.

Keep Writing!!

Oh. My. God. That was amazing! Not only did it have a meaningful topic that alone made sense, but it could be reversed into an equally powerful poem, that meant the opposite! I know you probably already know this, because, you know, you wrote it, but I found this style of poem very impressive, because I don’t think I could replicate it. Your style was incredibly unique, beautifully powerful, and allows the reader to have hope, as well as loss and sadness, in two different poems.

I think my favorite line in your poem, was this:

“The girl in the mirror isn’t good enough
So don’t try to convince me that
I am beautiful the way I am.”

I loved this line, in both poems. In the first poem, it is heartbreaking and relatable for a lot of people. And in the second poem, it is incredibly uplifting. It’s a call against unhealthy body image, and a proud anthem of “this is me”. I didn’t fine anything wrong with your poem, so I’ll end this review here. I really loved your poem, and hope to see more of your work around soon! Stay safe, and keep writing!

Hi! @rida here with a very strange review!!!!

Upon first glance: I really, really loved this poem: the way something so dreary and sad and transform into magical self-love and confidence! These kind of poems are one of my favourites! Also: wow! You wrote a palindrome poem that doesn’t sound forced of constrained! You have a really good grasp in poetry!

Cupcakes: once again, I will say that this poem didn’t sound to forced and the rhythm was perfect. I also loved the opening line and this poem speaks about something really, really important: how sometimes we feel too suffocated by harsh judgements about beauty; in a really new way.

Unbaked dough: I really didn’t find any mistakes! Good job!

Well, I hope you continue writing (and reviewing),
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to visit my aunt on the moon, and it’s quite a long journey, you see,
Byeeee!

Hi there. Here coz of RevMo and ready to review poem :>. So, let's go

I love your idea of making this a both way poem, one that reads from top to bottom and bottom to top, one which presents both the negative and positive mindset. I will dissect the poem and analyze it in pieces.

"The girl in the mirror isn't good enough".

This is a really strong introduction to the poem. It packs a huge punch to the reader who doesn't know what to expect in this poem and reads this. Its strength relies on the fact that it's a blunt statement, one that is sudden and, of course, on the wording, specifically the "enough". It implies that there is a norm of being good and the girl in the mirror doesn't even meet the bare minimum of it, further enhanced by the use of present tense.

"So don't try to convince me that/ I am beautiful the way I am".

It acts as a conclusion to the first line, a sincere request of not trying to convince her otherwise. She seems to be tired of people trying to convince her the opposite of what she actually thinks she is. This is implied by the beginning of the line, that "so"

"I know deep in my heart that/No one will ever love me/So don't fool me by saying/I don't need to earn the love of others"

Woah this is one strong line. As the other reviewer said, the phrase "deep in my heart" expresses the depth of this girl's belief in her not being loved and so on. "I know" isn't the same as "I think" or "I believe" it's much more. It's certitude.
We can once again see the conclusion with so, which flows in really well.

The poem goes on by saying the absolute opposite of what people that encourage others with such issues say. "My failures and flaws define me". The end is really sad and dark, "I don't think that life is worth living". This seems to be a pretty solid insight in the mind of a person who deals with these issues and is, at one point, considering life is not worth it anymore. Kind of scary if you ask me.

But it all works out with a great motivational message once you read it the other way around. Great idea, great poem, keep writing ! <3

heyo there! i'll be reviewing for you today ^^

I love the idea of a poem you read from top to bottom and then the other way around. I think I've seen something like this before, but it's still always exciting to see. The topic is especially an interesting one paired with the idea of there being two different interpretations. Self-love isn't talked about enough, and the same could be said about the opposite of it because everything related to feelings is stigmatized somewhat?

{The girl in the mirror isn't good enough

So don't try to convince me that

I am beautiful the way I am}

Great first line! Or well, great ending lines as well! It really pushed the main theme without going straight into the mental health aspect of self-esteem problems. Maybe the narrator is being bullied in school, or maybe something is happening in their personal life that affects them farther than a minor thing. There's a lot that can be interpreted from these first lines because the poem is short, but it works.

{I know deep in my heart that

No one will ever love me

So don't fool me by saying:

I don't need to earn the love of others}

I love the phrasing of "deep in my heart" in poetry because it really impacts the storyline. It shows a sense of urgency and that the narrator is set in their ways with whatever the main focus is, which is the way people view themselves in this case. In this situation, it's used a little awkwardly in my opinion. The phrase usually pops into play when the thing that is important is a good thing / something that will help people.

I'm also a little unsure of the usage of the colon, because I think it's used incorrectly here. I'm not the best at punctuation related topics though, but even if I'm right about that, I don't think it makes a big difference unless you care about it.

{My failures and flaws define me

And I don't think it's true that

Life is worth living}

When this is read from bottom to top like you said at the end, it's powerful. I say that a lot in this review, but I really do mean everything. When it isn't read like that, it feels a little bitter in a way that I personally don't like. I don't do well with more negatively focused things where people do not try to fix the problem, so maybe that's why.

Great poem! I really enjoyed reading all of it!
