Here's To You: Version 2

by AmadeusW

I felt so lost and alone,

And when the war of retribution began, I lost all hope.

But then you came to me, shining your light,

And I felt saved, because of you.

In my darkest hour, you were there for me.

And now that you are gone, I feel shipwrecked in the sea.

With every hour that passes, your absence kills me all the way through.

With every moon, I love you.

I remember us dancing in the wind;

And you’d hold me close, and you’d tell me you would never go away;

And you’d kiss me on the lips, there was no shame,

Thinking how the world would judge us for being man to man.

I remember your embrace, and your sweet words,

As we sat together in the barroom light,

Drinking glass for glass,

Singing love songs at the piano bench till midnight.

But now my lips are cracked,

I’m sitting alone at the piano bench, drinking all my sorrows away,

But not even the strongest drink could make me forget my pain.

So I screamed out at the barroom folks till they all ran home to daddy,

And I smiled with a savage look, my rage wanting to destroy.

But then I thought of you,

And I couldn’t let me go insane, for that would spite our love,

So I tumbled to the ground,

The empty glass broke under me, and I was bleeding out,

And I hoped to die and see you one last time.

But fate, it seems, kept me alive,

And I didn’t know what else to do but cry.

I got myself a new glass of the whiskey,

I sat back down to hit the keys, but couldn’t play a note.

So with you a memory, one I can’t forget,

I raised my glass into the air,

With the tears streaming down my face,

And you were all that I could think of evermore.

Here’s to you, my lover from the distant land.

We walked through the valley of the shadow of death with hand in hand.

Here’s to you, here’s to you.

I’ll raise my glass and enjoy your view.

While I sit, while I lay,

I wish you weren’t so far away.

And in this hour of darkness, my friend,

You said to the Devil, “Forgive me not, for I have never sinned.”

And did he grant your request? He did.

And the soul that you sold was returned to you, paid in full.

So no matter what you did or said, you are wonderful.

And when the hour of darkness had passed,

The empire of evil, it could never last,

All thanks to you.

And when I looked up to the Mountain of Hell,

I saw it blow up and fall,

And the lies that I told you and the lies that you told me were gone,

For your deed brought back the sun.

And I know you didn’t do it all for no one but yourself,

I know in my heart of hearts you made your choice to go to Hell for all of us.

So I cried out my heart in the barroom that night,

Every night, lamenting myself to sleep.

If only you were with me, to see the peace you brought to us.

If only you knew how much I love you, beyond all ashes, beyond all dust.

Here’s to you, my lover from the east wind.

You brought with you a frigid storm, but you made me feel so warm.

Here’s to you, here’s to you.

I’ll raise my glass and enjoy your view.

While the world is torn apart,

I’ll take my comfort in your beating heart.

Hi! This is zami here for a rusty review on your piece! It's been a while since I've reviewed a lyrical song, and in general, so please bear with me, haha.

I love this song - it perfectly portrays how people who fall in love with the same gender feel. Of course, it's just like when a straight person falls in love, with the added social discourse that follows homosexual couples wherever they go. Sorry, I don't know how to describe it, haha. I'm sure that you get what I mean.

Some of the stanzas don't really rhyme, which is confusing considering that this is a song? Then again, Pearl Jam wrote Black, which doesn't rhyme at all, so it isn't really a problem.

I actually don't have any criticism for this. I'm not that great at reviewing lyrics anyway, so I'm sorry that I'm not helpful. :( I hope that you have a great day, though, and to continue writing these wonderful songs!

My name is M, and I'm honestly here to obsess over how great a writer you are. Let's get started!

I've never read anything like this before, really. The feelings were so powerful, so potent. The story was touching and heartbreaking. Don't even get me started on the ATMOSPHERE! Dark bars, shattered glass, wooden floors. Everything was just so meticulously and well put together. You described everything perfectly! I feel for this man, I really do, and I've experienced nothing as he has. So making me feel like that posed a challenge, and you tackled it head-on and succeeded. Very well done!

I really don't have any contributions to make to this piece since you did so phenomenally on your own. Seriously, dude. Fantastic job!

I can't wait to read more of your art!

Yes, this is a lot darker. The flow is better and I really like it. Good job! I hope this makes it to the spotlight and I'm sorry this isn't longer! But I enjoyed it more than the other one.

Keep up writing songs...
