I am currently in nursing school, and we have been doing clinicals for the last few weeks, where we go in and work with the nursing home residents. I wrote this poem in honor of one of my patients whose family has begun coming to see her less and less, due to her declining mental health. She is very hard to deal with, but I saw a glimpse of sanity today, a glimpse of sadness and loneliness that brought about the inspiration for this poem. I scribbled it into my notes pad in between patients, and it hasn't gotten much work, so I hope it is okay. Thank you for reading!
Please believe, I mean no harm,
It's just my brain you see.
Instead of taking my skin away,
God took my mind from me.
I know you're there,
I love you so,
I know it's rough,
But please don't go.
I need you near me,
Even if I can't say,
Because I lose myself
More and more each day.
It will all be over soon,
And I will be gone for good
But I need you here right now,
Though I cannot treat you as I should.
I promise to love you always,
As only a mother could.

Hello, hope this review makes your day. A well- written poem and definitely one of my very favourites. I love poems which are well- rhymed and this certainly falls under that catergory. I also love the way you have described the person' s sadness and the sadness is over whelming. I only wish this poem was slightly longer; it would get more beautiful. These lines were my absolute favourite:
"I know you're there,
I love you so,
I know it's rough,
But please don't go."
And these lines were very touching- to think the family members don't realise that:
"It will all be over soon,
And I will be gone for good
But I need you here right now,
Though I cannot treat you as I should."
A very lovely piece of work and I hope this patient recovers soon.

This is a powerful poem. I am the type to never cry at movies, or be emotionally moved by things unattached to me, but this work really touched me. My great-grandmother was like this, and I regret that I failed to see her more often. Even to the day she died, she thought she had to wake up and feed the chickens on her 1930's farm. Because of that, I relate a lot to this poem, and it is one of my favorite ones I have read in my brief tenure on YWS. I think the fact that you created something so powerful in so few lines attests to your brilliant talent as a writer and a your humanity.
I loved every syllable with more admiration than the previous, so it is hard to choose a favorite few lines, but the ones that touched me the most were:
"I need you near me,
Even if I can't say,
Because I lose myself
More and more each day."
The imagery of not being able to stay because you are losing yourself has a resounding longing behind the words. I can imagine the weak voice, full of frustration, wisdom, confusion, beseeching her loved ones to not abandon her in her time of need.
I can't say anything bad about this poem. I loved it.
Thank you for taking the time to tell me how this poem made you feel. A poem's true power lies in how it is perceived by others, not just the writer. I am happy to hear that I was able to convey my feelings, and hopefully the feelings of those who cannot convey them for themselves, through my poetry. Thank you for your time!
That is so sad
It's touching that you wrote this and I hope her family doesn't leave her alone like that. Dementia is such a terrible thing to deal with.
You really captured the sadness and desperation with your diction. You chose to write it from the perspective of your patient. What if these were the last thoughts she was aware of, her remaining bit of sanity clinging to a cry for hope? It's such a sad poem, very emotional, but that's exactly what makes it such a great poem. I enjoy reading poems that have been inspired by events in the poet's own life. It leaves a connection to the reader and the poet/poem.
On to the poem though...I thought it was good
Thank you emjayc, positive feed back is the best inspiration for a writer!
