Everyone knows me says I’m sweet
I’m in the group I’m on the seat
Where girls compare their nails and hair
I smile and nod like I don’t care
⠀
I laugh in class I raise my hand
I know which jokes they’ll understand
But underneath my practiced grin
I hate the way I fit my skin
⠀
I haven’t grown I’ve gotten small
My clothes hang looser that is all
They say I look so good these days
But I just shrink beneath their praise
⠀
I skip the lunchroom every day
Say I’m not hungry walk away
I say I’m fine I fake a smile
But hunger waits a little while
⠀
I scroll through girls who look just right
Their bodies framed in perfect light
I save the ones that make me ache
Then dream of how much I could take
⠀
This isn’t fiction not a rhyme
This poem is my truth in time
I smile I joke I wear the mask
But truth leaks out in what you ask
⠀
I’ve never touched a plate with ease
Food makes me flinch it doesn’t please
You are what you eat they always say
So I eat only when I fade away

I really, really, really liked this poem. When people make relatable poems and stories about the actual problems that we face today, it just makes life a whole lot easier to live through.
We live in a society where if you're not pretty, if you're not slim like a branch, then you're an outcast. Whether it's with your personality and physical appearance.
''I’ve never touched a plate with ease
Food makes me flinch it doesn’t please
You are what you eat they always say
So I eat only when I fade away''
Now, let me just say, I LOVE food. I probably love it more than myself. I love to eat. When I was younger, I used to eat without a care in the world. And as I grew up, I realized, that it's okay to have fun with food, but still be healthy too. As long as you're taking care of your body, the way you want to, you're good. But our society makes us think, if you're not Regina George's size, you are not considered fit, or pretty.
''I scroll through girls who look just right
Their bodies framed in perfect light
I save the ones that make me ache
Then dream of how much I could take''
Social media plays a big role to teens and mostly everyone in the world how ''perfect'' you could be. However, have you ever taken a second to think, 'what's behind all the makeup, and camera lighting'? What does it actually take for her to be a size 0?
''I skip the lunchroom every day
Say I’m not hungry walk away
I say I’m fine I fake a smile
But hunger waits a little while''
On my first day of high school, I skipped breakfast and lunch, and binge ate when I got home. Back in middle school I used to eat everything and anything, but I guess when I entered high school, and saw all the pretty girls with their pretty bodies, I wanted to be just like them. But now, I have a better view of my body. I don't starve myself anymore. As long as I'm doing what makes my body feel good, I could care less.
Overall, this was a very good poem, and I'm sorry for trauma dumping you(you probably didn't want to hear all of that) but keep on writing because you are doing great!

I've been scrolling for a work that really speaks to me to actually think on and leave a review for, and yours is just beautiful<33
The rhyme scheme is very well done and the poem flows easily too. It was initially a little jarring to read with little punctuation, but to reread it I've come to the conclusion that the message is delivered more powerfully without the constraints and do-goodyness of grammar (that is to say, I really like it). Good job on figuring out a structure that imbues seriousness (to suit the subject) and takes out any elementary feel to the poem.
For the message, I'm sure the poem speaks to a lot of people who have gone through this and ARE going to this, and it provides for a very good message of shared vulnerability, resilience, the tenuous art of just holding on, and finally letting the light guide you and falling in love with normalcy and the little things all over again. Very powerful piece.
Dear poet, if you are going through something difficult or have in the past, you should know that you are capable, powerful. Its not good now, but one day you'll make it good again. <33333
What a powerful poem, Hop.
Truly beautiful and heart-wrenching lines. Just a reminder that you are loved and cared for <3 Amazing work. We are here if you need anything at all!
Hey Hop, before I review the poem itself, I do have some things I want to say. I just want to say I love you, you are beautiful and amazing, and I understand how you feel. No one deserves to go through stuff like this but sadly it's very common for young girls. I suffered from something very similar last year, (I won't get into detail), and it was torture, but I just want you to know that recovery is possible. Talking to a professional is always the best option but it can be really hard to do, because that would mean telling your parents which can be terrifying. I was able to recover through friends who helped me to feel okay in my body and feel comfortable with eating. Even if you can't talk to a professional, just talking about it can help. I am always here, and I will always talk to you, I understand what you are going through and I love you.
Anyway, about the poem itself, the poem is amazing, the rhyming was awesome, and I was able to understand what the verses meant easily.
I know I'm not great with words, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. I will always be here for you no matter what. Even if we don't go to the same school anymore I will aways answer texts, calls, PMs, whatever.
Keep up the great work, I love you, Mwah Mwah <3
Your bestie,
STARRYY
Thank you so much starryy <33 it's just been a lot and I have started to subconsciously do it. I miss you so much and school doesn't feel the same. I got my phone taken away because of my grades but I'm about to get it back. I'm so glad to have you and I'm so happy you're okay.
this poem is beautifully raw and painfully honest. it really captures the pain of body image eating issues that only someone who's been through it can know. the use of everyday scenes like the lunchroom and being with friends makes the emotions hit so much harder. as well as the flow of the poem itself is well done the rhyme is subtle but not forced. all in all very beautiful piece.

Hello! It's CATS here (your bestie) to leave a short review! I won't be using my CATS Opinion method because it's just too good. Let's splash in!
You wrote this poem with such truth, speaking the honesty in your heart. Why do I relate to this? I think every girl do. They see the imperfections of themselves, and try to change it, when they didn't even notice their beauty. They hold up a shield, of fake happiness. We need more poems like thus which tells all that they are not alone. It digs deep into my heart, where fake friends, insecurities, and tears reside. It goes pass the layers of jokes, laughter, and big groups of friends. A person is truly happy when they put down the shield and be themselves. Such a sorrowful ending though. Reminds me of that one song, Scars To Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara.
Jealousy makes people do horrible things, like starving themselves. They have to notice that everyone is different, and everyone has their flaws and perfections. Some people have different beauty they look in other people. If one doesn't think you are pretty (SCREW THEM I LOVE YOU) another one will. They have different perspectives. Some things invisible to one is shining for the other.
You aren't trying to make things rhyme. The rhyming was done flawlessly and smoothly, the flow done naturally and effortlessly. You speak for teens all around the world.
This is so truthful, and I can never offer improvements for something that came from the very heart. I apologize ToT
Overall this was such a relatable and honest read
Your poems hit home, my bestie
Keep writing for the lovers
Like me and you and all the others
Happy EVERYTHING!!!
Love,
Your bestie CATSZ
